BRAKE /((J)) Brake system
The light i llum inates when the ignition is
switched on. It goes out after the engine has been started . Th is indicates that the brake
warn ing light is functioning properly .
If the brake wa rning light doe s not light up

turns on, there is a brake system malfunction.

check if you can release the
parking brake. After releasing the parking
brake, carefully drive to your authorized
Audi dea ler immediately to have the ma l­
function correc ted. If you cannot release the
parking brake, seek professional assistance.
- If the ind icator light and the message ap ­
pear
w hile d riving , the emergency brak ing
function may not be available. It may not be
possible to set the park ing b rake or release
it once it has been set . Seek profess ional as­
sistance .

A WARNING
-Always observe the warn ings in
Q page 195, before openi ng the hood
and checking the brake flu id.
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety
ha zard . Stop the car and get professiona l
assis tance.
- I f the
1111 (USA models) ;II (Canada
models) brake system ind icator light
turns on together with the ABS and ESC
indicator lights, the ABS/ESC regulating
function may have failed. Functions that
stabilize the vehicle are no longer avai la­
ble. This could cause the vehicle to
swerve and increase the r isk of slid ing .
Drive carefully to the nearest authorized
Aud i deale r or other q ualified workshop
and have the malfunction corrected .
- If the brake warning/ind icator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
pa rking brake is re leased, or lights up
while you are dr iving, t he f lu id leve l in
the brake fl uid reservo ir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediate ly at low speed to the nearest

authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop and have the brake system
inspected.
- Always keep in mind that after several
brake applications, you will need greater
pressure on the brake pedal to stop your
vehicle . Do not rely on stra ined brakes to
respond w ith maximum stopping power
in critical situations. You must a llow for
increased bra king distances. The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could
lead to an acc ident.
::.'!!JC®) Electromechan ical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the
electromechanical parking brake.
If the indicator light. (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) turns on, the park ing brake
was set.
The warning/ind icator light will go out when
the park ing brake is released.
• (USA models) ;a (Canada models) Cau·
tion : Vehicle parked too steep
If the indicator light blinks and the message
appears, there is not enough braking power to
keep the vehicle from rolling. The brakes have
overheated. The vehicle could roll away even
on a small incli ne.
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
To release the parking brake, press the brake
pedal and press the button®> or start driving
with start ing ass ist at the same time
c:> page 79.
Please release parking brake
To release the parking brake manually, press
the brake peda l and press the button®) at
the same time. The parking brake only releas­
es automatically if the driver's safety belt is
fastened.
Ill Parking brake!
If the Ill indicator light turns on and this
message appears, there is a parking brake
malfunction. Drive to your authorized Aud i dealer or qualified workshop immediately to
have the malfunction corrected.

This
warning/indicator light reminds you to
put on your safety belt.
T he . warn ing/ indicator light i llum inates
when the ignition is switched on to remind
the driver and (on USA models on ly) any front
passenger to put on the safety be lt. Addition­
ally, an acoustic warning (gong) will also
sound.

· 0 Battery
The . warning/indicator light illuminates
when you switch on the ignition and must go
out after the eng ine has started.
• Alternator fault: Battery is not being
charged
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is a malfunction in the
generator or vehicle electrical system .
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop immediate ly . Because the veh i­
cle battery is discharging, turn off all unnec­
essary electrical equipment such as the radio.
Seek professiona l assistance if the battery
charge level is too low .
(•] Low battery : Battery will be charged
while driving
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there may be limited sta rting
ability.
If this message turns off after a little while,
the battery charged enough while driving.
If the message does not turn off, have your
authorized Aud i dealer or qualified workshop
correct the malfunction.

9::;r: Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair . Driving
with a low-oil-pressure indication is likely to
inflict severe damage to the engine.
• Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
If the indicator lig ht t urns on and the mes­
sage appears, the oil pressu re is too low.

~ Turnoff the engine.

- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low engine oil lev­
el. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the
oil level in your engine at regular inter ­
vals, preferably each time you refuel,
and always before going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication
II requires oil refill or workshop serv­
ice without delay. Do not wait until the
red oil pressure warning. starts to
flash before you respond to the low oil level warning

may already have suffered serious dam­
age .

-You are well advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe .
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driv­
er's door panel comes on for about 30
seconds after the vehicle is locked, there
i s a malfunction in the power locking or
the anti-theft warning system. Have the
malfunction corrected by an author ized
Audi dealersh ip or qua lified repair fac ili­

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remote control. A mechanical key is integrat ­
ed i n the master key
<=> page 32 .

The emergency key is not intended for con­
stant use.
It should on ly be used in an emer­
gency, for example, in place of the ign ition key
<=>
page 75. Keep it in a safe p lace and do
not carry it on your key ring .

bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you .
Number of keys
You can check the number of assigned keys to
you r vehicle <=>
page 11. This allows you to
make sure you have re ceived all of the keys
when you purchase a used vehicle.
Data in th e mast er ke y
During driving, service and maintenance-rele­
vant data is continuously stored on your mas­
ter key. Your Audi service adviser can read out
this data and tell you abo ut the work yo ur ve­
hicle needs . This applies also to vehicles with
convenience key*.
Person al comf ort settings
If two people use one vehicle, it is recom­
mended that each person always uses "their
own'' master key. When the ignition is turned
off or when the vehicle is locked, pe rsonal
convenience settings for the following sys ­
tems are stored and assigned to the remote
master key.
- Climate control
- Powe r locking system
- Seat memory*
- Parking system*
- Adaptive cruise control*
- Side assist*
- Drive select*
T he sto red settings are automatically recalled
when you unlock the vehicle, when you open
the doors or when you turn on the ignition .
A WARNING

-Do not leave your vehicle unattended
with the key in the ignition lock . Entry by
unauthorized persons could endanger
you or result in theft or damage the vehi­
cle .
- Do not leave ch ildren unattended in t he
veh icle, especially with access to vehicle

Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps:
• Insert the key into the ignition lock .
• Press the key briefly
without pressing the
brake pedal.
• To switch the ignition off, press the key
again.
When starting the engine, major electrical
loads are switched off temporarily.
You can only remove the key with the ignition
switched off.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
- Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never remove the ignition key from the
ignition look while the vehicle is moving.
Otherwise, the steering lock could sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­ caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency . Depending
on the time of year, people inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures.

Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and heavy engine loads until the engine has
reached operating temperature -other­
wise you risk engine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions.
(D Tips
- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the master key in or­
der to be able to lock the vehicle
¢page 33 .
-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause the oil pressure must first build up
in the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch off
after a certain period of time. Please
note that electrical equipment such as
exterior lights will switch off as well
when that happens.

--When you leave your veh icle -even if on­
ly briefly -always remove the ign ition
key . This applies part icularly when chil­
dre n remain in the vehicle. Otherw ise the
children cou ld start the engine, release
the parking bra ke or operate electrical
equipment (e .g. power wi ndows). There
is the r is k of an accident .
- Whe n the vehicle is loc ked, no one -par­
t ic ularly not c hild ren sho uld remain in
the vehicle . Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency workers to get in­
to the vehicle -putting lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting.
Stopping and applying parking brake

ply the pa rk ing brake.

Starting and automatically relea sing the
parking brak e
.. When you sta rt to drive as usual, the park­
ing brake is autom atically released and your
veh icle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping
in c ity traffic on v ehicl es with an automatic
tran smission, the pa rking b rake can be ap­
plied . The vehicle does not have to be held
with the footbrake . The parking brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep w ith a dr ive range
engaged . As soon as you d rive
off as usual ,
t h e pa rking bra ke is re leased automat ically
and t he veh icle s tarts to move .
Starting on slopes
When sta rting on inclines, the sta rting assist
prevents the vehicle from un intent ionally roll­
ing back . The braking force of the parking
brake is not re leased unti l su ff ici ent d riving
f orce has been built up at the wheels .
(D Tips
For safety reaso ns, the pa rking brake is re­
l eased automatically o nly when the d riv­
e r's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks .
.. In an emergency , pull the switch @

page 78, fig . 92 and continue to pull it to
slow you r vehicle down with the parking
br ak e.
.. As soon as you re lease the swi tch @ or ac-
celerate, the braking process stops.
If you p ull the swi tch@ and hold it above a
speed o f abo ut 5 mph (8 km/h), the eme rgen­
cy bra king f unct ion is initiated. The ve hicle is
braked at all four whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic b rake system. The brake pe rformance
is sim ilar to making an emergency stop¢
A.

ing by mistake, an audib le wa rning tone (bu z­

-Unintended vehicle movement can cause
serious injury .
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running,
activate the parking brake and move the
selector lever to P .
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is running and the selector
lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position
while the vehicle is stationary and the
engine is running.
- Never shift into
R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re-
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking distance or causes complete fail­
ure of the brake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it
in place with the brake pedal or parking
brake .
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with
a slipping clutch . The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the overload . An indicator lamp

- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P with the parking brake set

@ Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try
to hold the vehicle in place by pressing
the accelerator pedal while a driving gear is selected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to overheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake
pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling .
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the en­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when these ­
lector lever is in D/S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline. Hill de ­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical
and technical limitations. It may st ill be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes.
Hill descent control switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator
pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise control system*
Q page 81 , hill descent control is also activat­
ed when the speed is set.
A WARNING -
Hill descent control cannot overcome
physical limitations, so it may not be able
to maintain a constant speed under all

Parking system plus
Description
Applies to vehicles: with parking system plus
Audi parking system plus provides audio and
visual signals when parking.
Sensors are located in the front and rear
bumpers. If these detect an obstacle, visual
and audible s ignals warn you. The range at
which the sensors begin to measure is approx­
imately:
side
front 3 ft (0.90 m)
center
4 ft (1.20 m)
side 2 ft (0 .60 m)
rear
center S.2 ft (1.60 m)
Park assist 105
The
closer you get to the obstacle, the shorter
the interva l between the audible signals. A
continuous tone sounds when the obstacle is less than approximately 1
ft (0.30 m) away.
Do not continue driving farther!
If the distance to an obstacle stays the same,
the volume of the d istance signa l chime is
gradually reduced after about
4 seconds (does
not affect the continuous signal tone).
