haust system . The catalytic converter
could then overheat and be damaged .
Warning/indicator
lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or
m alfunctions
c::> .&. .
Messages may appear with some indicator
lights. A warning signal will sound at the
same time . The messages disappear again af­
ter a short t ime. To display a message again,
press the
I S ET I bu tton c::> page 11 . If several
malfunction s occur, each of the indicator/
warn ing lamps will be d isplayed in succession
for about two seconds at a time.
Some ind icators ligh ts in the display can turn
on in several colors.
A WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other
important vehicle info rmation may result
in serious personal injury o r vehicle dam­
age.
- Whenever sta lled or s topped for repa ir,
move the vehicle a safe dis tance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the
emergency flasher

- T he engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a poten tially hazardous a rea.
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme ca u­
t ion when working under the hood

the function of that system when you switch
the ignition on . T hese systems are marked

18 Instruments and warning/indicator lights
Do not continue driving if the . symbo l
illuminates. There is a malfunct ion in the
engine cooling system -you co uld damage
your eng ine .
@-Steering column lock
• Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is an electronic steer ing
column lock malfunction . You ca nnot switch
the ign ition on .
Do
not tow your vehicle because it cannot be
steered. Seek professional assistance.
1!11 Steering lock: Contact dealer!
If the indicator light turns on and t he mes­
sage appears, there is an elect ronic steer ing
column lock ma lfunction.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dea ler immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected.
A WARNING
-
Your vehicle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunction in the electronic
steering column lock because it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering.
If it is
towed with the steering locked, there is
the risk of an accident.

• Ignition lock defective. Contact dealer!
If the indicator light turns on and the mes ­
sage appears, do
not switch the ignition off
because you may not be able to switch it on
again.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected.
On vehicles with convenience key *, the engine
should not be switched
off using the
I START ENGINE STOP ! button because the en­
g ine cannot be started again after the ignition
has been switched
off.

(ESC)
If the DJ ind icator light blinks while driving,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is active­
ly regulat ing.
If the
DJ ind icator light turns on, the system
has switched the ESC
off. In th is case, you can
switch the ign ition
off and then on to switch
the ESC on aga in. The ind icator light turns
off
when the system is fu nctioning fu lly.
If the
II ind icator light turns on, ESC was re­
stricted or switched

Stabilization control (ESC/ABS): Fault! See

If the indicator light DJ and the ABS indicator
light~ (USA models)

turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electron ic differe ntial lock is malfunctioning.
T his also causes the ESC to malfunction. The
brakes still function with their normal power,
but ABS is not active .
Drive to your author ized Audi dealer immed i­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .

A WARNING
--If the 1111 (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light turns
on together with the ABS and ESC indic a­
tor lights, the ABS/ES( regulat ing function
may have failed. Functions that s tabilize
the vehicle are no longer available. This
could cause the vehicle to swerve and in­
crease the risk of sliding. Drive carefully to
the nearest authorized Audi dealer and
have the ma lfunction corrected.

vides children the opportunity to start the engine and/or act ivate vehicle sys­

supervised operation of any veh icle sys­

plete stop. Otherwise the steering col­

- The operation of the remote cont ro l key
c a n be tempo rarily disru pted by in terfer­
ence from tran smi tters in t he v ici nity of
t h e veh icle work ing in the same frequen ­
cy ra nge (e.g . a ce ll phone, radio equip­
ment).
- Fo r security reasons, replacement keys
a re on ly availab le from author ized Audi
dealer.

The check light@¢ fig. 20 in the mas ter key
provides information abo ut different condi ­
t ions .
" The check light turns on b riefly once when a
bu tton is pressed , and during an " inquiry "
by the convenience key system .
" If the check light does not come on, the bat­
t ery is dead a nd has to be replaced. In addi­
t ion, when the batte ry is dead the

Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps:
• Insert the key into the ignition lock .
• Press the key briefly
without pressing the
brake pedal.
• To switch the ignition off, press the key
again.
When starting the engine, major electrical
loads are switched off temporarily.
You can only remove the key with the ignition
switched off.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
- Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never remove the ignition key from the
ignition look while the vehicle is moving.
Otherwise, the steering lock could sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­ caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency . Depending
on the time of year, people inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures.

Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and heavy engine loads until the engine has
reached operating temperature -other­
wise you risk engine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions.
(D Tips
- If the key cannot be removed from the
ignition lock, you have to pull the me­
chanical key out of the master key in or­
der to be able to lock the vehicle
¢page 33 .
-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause the oil pressure must first build up
in the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch off
after a certain period of time. Please
note that electrical equipment such as
exterior lights will switch off as well
when that happens.

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
Applies to vehicles: with ignition lock
You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in an emergency.

Steering lo ck
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key. The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherw ise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minu tes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
bui ld-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The

Steering lock
The steering locks when you turn the engine

and open the dr iver's door. The locked steer­
ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
E mergenc y off
If necessary, the eng ine can be sw itched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S pos i­
tions. To do so, step on the brake pedal and
press and hold the
I STAR T ENGINE STOP I but­
ton vehicle speed must be less than 6 mph (10 km/h).

- Never t urn off the eng ine be fore the ve ­
hicle has come to a complete stop . The
f ull function of the brake booster and the

This message appears when the
I START ENGINE STOP I button is pressed if
there is no master key ins ide the ve hicle or if
the system does not recognize it . For exam­
ple, the master key cannot be recognized if it
i s covered by an object (e .g . aluminum brief
case) which
screens the radio s ignal. Electron­
ic dev ices such as cell p hones can also inte r­
f ere with the radio s ignal.
Pr ess brake p edal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal to start the eng ine .
Shift to N or P to start eng ine
T his message appears w hen attempt ing to
star t the eng ine if the selecto r lever for the
automatic transmiss ion is not in the P or N
pos ition . The engine can only be started with
the se lector in these positions.

Introduction
App lies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
Drive select provides the possib ility to exper i­
e nce diffe ren t types of vehi cle sett ings in o ne
ve hicl e. For ins tance, us ing t he three
Com­
fort , Auto and Dynamic modes, the driver can
switch from a sporty to a comfortab le drivi ng
mode with the press of a b utton.
A ddit ionally, in veh icles wi th MM I*, the vehi ­
cle setup for
Individual* mode can be c us­
tom ized by you . This makes it possib le to
comb ine settings such as a sporty engine tun ­
ing with comfortable steering.
A WARNING
Improper use of the A udi d rive select can
cause collisions , ot her acc idents and se ri­
ous pe rsonal injury .
Description
Applies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the veh icle's features . However, the engin e,
automa tic t ransmissio n and s teeri ng a re a l­
ways involved.

he following app lies to veh icles with dynamic
stee ring *: the steering rat io chan ges base d on
vehicle speed in order to ma inta in optim um
steering effort for the driver at all times. This
sets the steering to be less sens itive at higher
speeds in o rder to provide improved vehicle
co ntrol. At r educed speeds, howeve r, s teer ing
is mo re d irect in o rder to k eep th e stee ring ef­
fo rt as minima l as poss ible whe n the drive r is
mane uveri ng the veh icle. At low and ave rage
s p eeds, dynamic steering ad dit iona lly pro ­
vides more responsive stee ring pe rformance .
Sport differential*
As a compone nt of the all whee l dr ive system

T he be hav io r when accelera ting can be adjus t­
ed from comfortab le to sporty, de pendi ng on
t h e d rive select mode . Adaptive cru ise contro l
also responds to the driv ing behavior o f the
vehicle ahead in a more conservative or sporty man ner .
