Select the spo rt m ode S for sporty driving. The
vehicle makes full use of the engine's power.
Shift ing may become not iceable when accelerat
ing.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply the foot
brake before and while moving the lever to D/S
out of N.

- If there is a power failure, the se lector lever

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin
tentionally.

The selector lever lock is released as fol lows:

Automatic selector leve r loc k
The selector lever is locked in the P and N pos i
tions when the ignit ion is turned on . You must
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another posit ion. As a reminder to the
drive r, the following warni ng appears in the in
str ument cluster display when the se lector is in P
and
N:

The Automatic Shift Lock only funct ions when the
vehicle is stat iona ry or at speeds below 1 mph
(2 km/h).
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the Auto
matic Shift Lock is automat ica lly deactivated in
the N pos ition.
A time delay element prevents the selector lever
from locking when it is moved through the N po
s ition (going from R to D/S) . The locking e lement
will lock the selector leve r if the lever is left in N .,..

without the brake pedal being pressed.
Release button
The release button on the selector lever prevents
the lever from being accidentally shifted into cer
tain positions. Depending on the direction of the
shift, the selector lever locks at different posi
tions . The positions are highlighted in the i llus
tration ¢
fig. 84.
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition un
l ess the selecto r lever is in the P park position .
When the ignition key is removed, the selector
lever will be locked in the P position.

just the gears to the driving conditions by hand

On s lopes, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
This prevents too much stress from being placed on the locking mechanism .

-The vehicle can also roll when the engine is
stopped.
- Unintended vehicle movement can cause se
rious injury.
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave your

vehicle when the engine is running, activate
the parking brake and move the selector lev
er to P.
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To pre
vent the vehicle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake when the engine
is running and the selector lever is in D/S or
R or "tiptronic" mode is selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position while
the vehicle is stationary and the engine is
running.
- Never shift into R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, reduce
your speed and shift into a lower gear with
"tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re
duces braking performance, increases brak
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the brake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it in
place with the brake pedal or parking brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. An indicator lamp

and a driver message appears¢

when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure these
lector lever has securely engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
¢page 187. Otherwise, any increase in en
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
-When stopping on an incline, do not try to
hold the vehicle in place by pressing the ac
celerator pedal while a driving gear is se
lected. This can cause the transmission to
overheat and can damage it. Activate the

parking brake or press the brake pedal to
prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the engine
is stopped and the selector lever is in N will
damage the transmission because it is not
lubricated under those circumstances .
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle .
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when the selec
tor lever is in D/S and you press the brake pedal.
The transmission automatically selects a gear
that is suitable for the incline. Hill descent con
trol tries to maintain the speed achieved at the
time of braking, within physical and technical
limitation s.
It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes .
Hill descent control switches off once the decline
level s out or you press the accelerator pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise control system*
¢
page 78, hill descent control is also activated
when the speed is set.
A WARNING
Hill descent control cannot overcome physical
limitations, so it may not be able to maintain
a constant speed under all conditions. Always
be ready to apply the brakes.

Manual shift program
Using the manual shift program you can man
ually select gears.

Gear selection with selector lever
The tiptronic mode can be selected either with
the vehicle stationary or on the move.
• Push the selector lever to the right from D/S.
An M appears in the instrumen t cluste r display
as soon as the transm ission has shifted.
• To upshift, push the selector lever forward to
the plus position

• To downshift, push the lever to the minus posi-
tion

Gear selection with shift paddles*
The shift padd les are activated when the selector
lever is in D/S or the tiptronic manual shift pro
gram.
• To upshift , touch the shift paddle on the right

• To downshift, touch the shift paddle on the left

• If you do not press a shift paddle within a short
time while in the D/S position, the transmission
will return to automatic mode . To keep shifting

using the shift padd les, move the selector lever
to the right out of the D/S position.
When accelerating, the transmission does
not
automatically shift to the next gear shortly be
fore the maximum permitted engine RPM is
reached .
If you have selected a lower gear than the current
one, the automatic transmission will shift down
only when the engine wi ll not be over-revved.
With kick-down , the transmission shifts into a
lower gear depending on speed and engine RPM.
@ Tips
Tiptronic is inoperative when the transmission
is in the fail-safe mode.
Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration .
When you depress the accelerator peda l beyond
the resistance point, the automatic transmission downsh ifts into a lower gear, depending on vehi
cle speed and engine speed. The upshift into the
next higher gear takes place once the maximum
specified eng ine speed is reached .
& WARNING
Please note that the wheels can spin if kick
down is used on a smooth slippery road -
there is a risk of skidding .
Launch Control Program
The Launch Control Program provides the best
acceleration possible when starting from a stop.
Requirement: The engine must be at ope rat ing
temperature and the steering wheel must not be
turned .

and the vehicle can brea k away w hen spo rt
mode is switched on, especially when the
road is slippery.
- Once you have accelerated, yo u should
switch sport mode off
by pressing the

- The t ransmission tempe ratu re may inc rease
significantly after using the La unch Control
Program. If that happens, the program may
not be available for a few minutes. It will be
ava ilable again after a coo l-down period .
- When accelerat ing using the Launch Contro l
program, all vehicle pa rts a re subject to
heavy loads. This can result in increased
w ear.
Transmission malfunction
[i1 Transmission : Press brake pedal and sele ct
gear again .
Press the brake pedal and se lect the desi red se
lecto r leve r pos it ion aga in . You can then continue
d riving.
[O] Transmi ssion overheating: Please drive con
servativ ely.

The transm ission temperat ure has inc reased s ig
nificantly d ue to the sporty driving manner. Drive
i n a less sporty manne r until the temperature re
turns to the normal range and the indicator light
switches of.
[i1 Trans mission malfunction: You can continue
driving
The re is a system mal func tion in the t ransm is
s ion . You may contin ue driving . Drive to yo ur au
thorized Audi dea ler or qualified repa ir facility
soon to have the malfunction corrected .
[i1 Transmission malfun ction : Limited driving
functionality
There is a system malfunct ion in the t ransm is
s io n. The t ransm ission is swi tching to eme rgency
mode. This mode on ly shifts in to cer tain gears or
will no longer shift at al l. The engine may stall.
D rive to your authorized A udi dealer or qualified
repair fac ility immediately to have the mal func
tion corrected.
[il ffl Trans mission malfunction: No reverse
You can continue dri ving
There is a system malfunct ion in the t ransm is
s ion. The t ransm ission is swi tch ing to eme rgency
mode. This mode on ly shifts into certain gears or
will no longer shift at al l. The engine may sta ll.
You cannot engage the reverse gear. Drive to yo ur
authori zed Aud i dea ler or q ualified repa ir facility
i mmediately to have the malfunct ion corrected.

Introduction
App lies to veh icles: w ith Audi adaptive cruise co ntrol
The adaptive cruise control system assists the
d river by regu lating veh icle speed and he lp ing to
maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead ,
within the limits of the system. If the system de
tects a moving vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise control can brake and then accelerate your vehi
cle. This he lps to make driving more comfortable
on long highway stretches.
The braking guard system can warn you about an impending collision and initiate brak ing maneu
vers
c> page 94.
Adapt ive cruise control and braking guard have
technical limitations that you must know, so p lease read this section carefully, understand
how the system works and use them properly at
all times.
General information
General information

The area that contains the radar sensor c::> fig . 90
must neve r be covered by stickers or other ob
jects or obstructed with dirt, insects, snow or ice
that will inte rfe re wi th the adapt ive cru ise con
trol system and brak ing guard. For information
on cleaning, refer to
c> page 181 . The same ap
plies for any modifications made in the front
area.

The function of the adaptive cruise contro l sys
tem and braking guard is limited under some
condit ions:
- Objects can on ly be de tected when they are
within sensor range
c> page 90, fig. 93.
- The system has a l imi ted ability to detect ob
jects that are a short d istance ahead, off to the
side of your vehicle or moving into your lane.
- Some k inds of veh icles are hard to detect ; fo r
example motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging toads may be
detected when it is too late or they may not be
detected at all .
- When driving through curves

- Stationary objects c::> page 89.
& WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic when adaptive
cruise control is switched on and braking
guard is active . As the driver, you are still re
sponsible for starting and for maintaining
speed and distance to other objects . Braking
guard is used to assist you . The driver must
a lways take action to avo id a collis ion. The
driver is always responsible for braking at the
cor rect t ime.
- I mproper use of adaptive cru ise con tro l can
cause collisions, other accidents and serious
personal inju ry.
- Never let the comfort and conven ien ce that
adapt ive cru ise control and brak ing guard
offer distrac t you from the need to be alert
to traffic cond itions and the need to remain
in full control of your vehicle at all times,
- Always remember t hat the adaptive cruise
contro l and brak ing guard have limits - they
will not slow the vehicle down or maintain
the set distance when you dr ive towards an
obstacle or something on or near the road
that is not moving, such as vehicles stopped in a traff ic jam, a stalled or disabled vehicle.
If registered by t he radar sensor, vehicles or
obstacles that are not moving can t rigge r a
co llision warning and if confirmed by the
video camera, a n acu te collision warning.

to the veh icle ahead. No arrow appears when the
vehi cle is on an open road and there is no object

If an object is detected ahead, the arrow

l ected is too close or may soon become too close,

A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise control
can cause collisions, other accidents and se ri
ous personal injuries.
- Pressing the !SET ! button when driving at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), w ill auto
matica lly accelerate the vehicle to 20 mph
(30 km/h), which is the mi nimum speed
that can be set.
a) Tips
- If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memo ry.
- The electronic stab ilizat ion cont rol (ESC)
and the anti-slip-reg ulat ion (ASR) are a uto
matically turned on when the adaptive
cruise contro l is turned on. Both systems
cannot be turned off if the adaptive c ruise
control is turned on .

Overriding cruise control

Th e distance between the two veh icles will
change in the instrument cluster display .
When approaching a mov ing vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cruise control system bra kes to
match that object's speed and then maintains
the stored distance. If the vehicle ahead acceler
ates, adaptive cruise contro l will also accelerate
up to the stored speed.
The higher the speed, the greater the distance in

A WARNING
Following other vehicles too closely increases
the risk of collisions and ser ious personal in
jury.
- Setting short distances to the traffic ahead
reduces the time and distance available to
br ing your vehicle to a safe stop and makes
it even more necessary to pay close atten
tion to traffic.
- Always obey applicable traffic laws, use
good judgment, and select a safe following
distance for the traffic, road and weather
conditions.

braking by the adaptive cruise control system is

Audi braking guard
Description

Braking guard uses a radar sensor. It also func
tions within the limits of the system when adap
tive cruise control is switched off.
What can Audi braking guard do?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a vehicle ahead brakes suddenly
or if your own vehicle is traveling at a high speed
and approaching a vehicle up ahead that is mov
ing more slowly . Braking guard does not react if it
cannot detect the situation .
The system advises you of various situations:
- The
distance warning is given if you are too
close to the vehicle ahead for a long time. If the
vehicle ahead brakes sharply, you will not be
able to avoid a collision. The indicator light.
in the display comes on .
- The
approach warning is given when a detected
vehicle up ahead in your lane is moving much
more slowly than you are or if it brakes sharply .
When this warning is given, it may only be pos
s ib le to avoid a collision by swerving or braking
sharply. The indicator light . and indicato r in
the display will wa rn you about the danger
¢ fig. 100 . You will also hear an acoustic signa l.
If you do not react fast enough or do not react at
all to the situation, Braking guard will intervene

-If the braking guard senses that you are not
braking hard enough when a collision is immi
nent, it can increase the braking force.
Which functions can be controlled?
You can switch braking guard and the distance/
approach warning on or off in the radio or MMI
c> page 95, Settings in the radio/MM!.
A WARNING
Lack of attent ion can cause collisions, other
accidents and ser ious personal injuries. The
braking guard is an assist system and cannot
prevent a coll is ion by itself. The dr iver must
always intervene. The driver is always respon
sib le for braking at the correct time.
- Always pay close attent ion to traffic, even
when the braking guard is switched on. Be
ready to intervene and be ready to take com
plete control whenever necessary. Always
keep the safe and legal distance between
your vehicle and vehicles up ahead.
- Braking guard works within limits and will
not respond outside the system limits, for
examp le when approaching a stopped vehi
cle or stationary obstacle (end of a traffic
jam or vehicle that has broken down in traf
fic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor for
the braking guard works only w ith in defined
detection and range limits that may prevent
the proper detection of other vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range can
be reduced by rain, snow and heavy spray.
