A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in¢ page 187,
before open ing the hood and check ing the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the eng ine cool off
first so that you cannot hear o r see any
steam o r engine coo lant.
0 Note
- Mount ing additional lights or accesso ries in
fron t of the a ir inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radia to r. A t high outside temper­
atu res or high e ngine load, the eng ine could
overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the veh i­
cle is moving. If the spo iler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­ ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops be low 1,5 00, you should
downshift to the next lower gea r. T he red area at
the end of the scale indicates max imum permis­
sible eng ine RPM after the break-in period . Be­
fore reachi ng this area, move the selector lever to
position D/S or ease your foot off the accelerator
pedal.

should o nly briefly be in the red zone: you
co uld damage your eng ine! The beginn ing of
the r ed zone varies depending on the engine.

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system constantly monitors cer­
tain individual functions and components of the
vehicle when the ignition is turned on and when
the vehicle is moving .
With the ign ition turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by pressing the
I SE TI but­
ton. You can perform an Auto-Check sequence
when the vehicle is sta tionary and the ign it ion is
tu rned on o r whe n th e vehicle is moving slowe r
t h an 3 mph (5 km/ h).
In add ition , the number of keys init ia lised for
your vehicle is disp layed .
L2 3/3 means that
th ree keys have be en initialised. This feature ena­
bles used car buye rs to make sure they have r e­
c e ived all of the keys.
If you are g iven only two keys, for instance, you
should take the vehicle and the existing keys to
an a utho rized Aud i dea le r to have the miss ing key
disabled.
It i s also important to no tify your insur­
ance company abo ut the loss.
Setting the sp eed warning
By pressi ng the !SET ! button briefly, you can set
th reshold 1 of the speed wa rn ing while you are
dr iv ing ¢page 78. By ma intai ning pressure on

~ If the engine oil level is correct and the indica­
tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. Seek profess ional as ­
sistance.
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication
Ill
requires oil refill or workshop service with­
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil
pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil level warning

suffered serious damage.

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears , the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low .
~ Pull off the road.
~ Stop the vehicle .
~T urnoff the engine.
~ Check coolant level.
~ Add coolant if necessary¢ page 193 .
~ Continue driving only after the eng ine coolant
warning/indicator light goes out .
Instruments and indicator lights
~ Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assis­
tance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is cor rect, then the ra­
diator fan may be the cause o f the malfunction .
A WARNING
--If your vehicle should break down for me­
chanica l or other reasons, park at a safe dis­
tance from moving traffic, turn off the en­
gine and turn on the hazard warn ing lights
¢ page 45, Emergency flashers .
-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the eng ine
compartment -you risk being scalded . Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perform any
wo rk in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the
warn ing stickers
¢ page 187 .

minates. There is a malfunction in the engine
cooling system -you could damage your en­
gine.

If the indicator light turns on and the message

lock malfunction. You cannot switch the ignition
on .
Do
not tow your vehicle because it cannot be

A WARNING
Always adapt the tire pressure
to your driving style and vehicle load.
-Overloading can lead to loss of
vehicle control and increase the risk of an accident. Read
and follow the important
safety precautions in
¢ page 208, Tires and vehicle
load limits.
-The tire must flex more if the tire pressure is too low or if the vehicle speed or load are
too high. This heats the tire up too much. This increases the
risk of an accident because it
can cause the tire to burst and result in loss of vehicle con­
trol.

Tires and vehicle load limits
There are limits to the amount of
load or weight that any vehicle
and any tire can carry. A vehicle
that is overloaded will not handle
well and is more difficult to stop. Overloading can not only lead to
loss of vehicle control, but can al­
so damage important parts of the
vehicle and can lead to sudden
tire failure, including a blowout and sudden deflation that can
cause the vehicle to crash .
Your safety and that of your pas­ sengers also depends on making
sure that load limits are not ex­
ceeded. Vehicle load includes ev-

erybody and everything in and on
the vehicle. These load limits are
technically referred to as the vehi­ cle's
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
("GVWR").
The "GVWR" includes the weight of the basic vehicle , all factory in­
stalled accessories, a full tank of
fuel, oil, coolant and other fluids plus maximum load . The maxi ­
mum load includes the number of
passengers that the vehicle is in­
tended to carry ("seating capaci ­
ty") with an assumed weight of
150 lbs. (68 kg) for each passen­
ger at a designated seating posi­
tion and the total weight of any luggage in the vehicle . If you tow
a trailer, the weight of the trailer hitch and the tongue weight of
the loaded trailer must be includ- ed as part of the vehicle load. ..,.

Winter tires
W inter tires sign ificantly improve t he vehicle's
h andling when drivi ng in winter condit ions. Be­
cause of the ir construction (width, compound,
tread pattern), summer t ires p rov ide less t ract ion
on ice and snow.

The effectiveness of winte r tires is reduced great ­
l y when the tread is worn dow n to a depth of
0 .157 inch (4 mm). The characteristics of w inter
tires also decrease greatly as the tire ages, re­
gardless of the remai ning tread .
A WARNING
-Never drive faster than the maximum per ­
mitted speed for your t ires. This could cause
the tires to heat up too much . This increases
the risk of an ac cident be cause it can cause
the tire to b urst.
- Always adapt you r driv ing to the road and
t raff ic conditions. Dr ive ca refully and re duce
yo ur speed on icy or slippery roads. Even
w inter tires can lose tract ion on black ice.

Reinstall summer tires at the approp riate
t ime, because they prov ide be tter h and ling
when roads a re free of snow and ice. S ummer
tires ca use less road no ise, tire wea r and fuel
consumption.

Snow chains
Snow chains improve traction in the snow .
.. On ly install snow chains on the front wheels .
T his applies a lso to vehicles with a ll whee l
drive .
.. Check and correct the seating of the snow
chains if necessary after driving a few feet . Fol ­
low the instructions from the manufactu rer .
.. Note the maximum permitted speed when dr iv­
ing wit h snow chains . Do not exceed 30 mph
(SO km/h).

Use of snow chains is only permitted with certain
rim/tire combinations due to technical reasons .
Check with an authorized Audi dea ler or author­
ized repa ir fac ility to see if you may use snow
chains.
Use
fine-mesh snow chains. They must not add
more than 0 .41 inch (10 .5 mm) in he ight, includ­
i ng the cha in lock.
You must remove the chains when driving on roads that are
free of snow . When roads are free
of snow, snow cha ins can impair handl ing and
damage the tires, and the chains wi ll quickly be
dest royed.

control, which increases the risk of an acci­
dent .

ernment test course.
For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one
and one ha lf (11/2) times as well on the govern­
ment course as a tire graded 100.
The relative performance of tires depends upon
the actual conditions of their use, however, and
may depart significantly from the norm due to
variations in driving habits, service practices and
differences in road characteristics and climate.
Traction
The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are
AA, A, Band
C. Those grades represent the tire's
ability to stop on wet pavement as measured un­
der controlled conditions on specified govern­ ment test surfaces of asphalt and concrete . A tire
marked C may have poor traction performance

Temperature
The temperature grades are A (the highest), B,
and C, representing the tire's resistance to the
generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on
a specified indoor laboratory test wheel.
Sustained high temperature can cause the mate­ rial of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life,
and excessive temperature can lead to sudden
tire failure

The grade C corresponds to a level of perform­
ance which all passenger car tires must meet un ­
der the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109. Grades Band A represent higher levels
of performance on the laboratory test wheel than
the minimum required by law .
A WARNING

The traction grade assigned to this tire is
based on stra ight-ahead braking traction
tests, and does not include acceleration, cor­
nering, hydroplan ing or peak traction charac­
teristics.
Wheels
A WARNING
The temperature grade for this tire is estab­ lished for a tire that is properly inflated and
not overloaded. Excessive speed, underinfla­
tion, or excessive loading, either separately or
in comb ination , can cause heat buildup and
possible tire failure.

ed.
Tire pressure monitoring system
ill General notes
Applies to vehicles: with tire pressure monitoring system
Each tire, including the spare (if provided),
should be checked monthly when cold and inflat­
ed to the inflation pressure recommended by the
vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or
tire inflation pressure label. (If your vehicle has
tires of a different size than the size indicated on
the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure la­
bel, you should determine the proper tire infla­
tion pressure for those tires) .
As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system
(TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure tell­
tale when one or more of your tires is significant­
ly under-inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire
pressure telltale illuminates, you shou ld stop and
check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate
them to the proper pressure . Driving on a signifi­
cant ly under-inflated tire causes the tire to over­
heat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation
also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread life,
and may affect the vehicle's handling and stop­
ping ability .
Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute for
proper tire maintenance, and it is the driver's re­
sponsibility to maintain correct tire pressure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level
to trigger illumination of the TPMS low tire pres-
sure telltale. .,.
