Depending on the vehicle equipment level, you
may choose between the quartz clock or the GPS
controlled clock*~ in the radio or in the MMI*.
You can learn more about this in the MMI manual
or in the radio user's manual.
Odometer/trip odometer
The display of distance driven is shown in kilome
ters "km" or in miles "mi".
- USA models -Miles
- Canada models - Kilometers
The units of measure (kilometers/miles) can be changed in the radio or MMI* . You can learn more
about this in the MMI manual or in the radio us
er's manual.
The odometer @ shows the total number of kilo
meters or miles that have been driven on the ve
hicle .

The trip odometer @ shows the distance driven
since it was last reset.
It can be used to measure
short distances. The last digit shows distances of
100 meters or 1/10 of a mile .
The trip odometer can be reset to zero by press
ing the reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in
strument cluster,
DEF will appear in the tripod
ometer and will stay on. Contact your authorized
Audi dealer to have the problem corrected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is switched on, the data on the
ignition key are scanned automatically.
If an unauthorized key was used,
SAFE is dis
played permanently in the odometer display
field . The vehicle cannot be operated

{i) Tips
-When you switch off the ignition or open
the driver door, the time, date, odometer
and temperature are displayed for an addi
tional
30 seconds.
- You can also call up the display with the
!SET ! button¢ page 11 while the ignition is
switched off.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is on.
When the needle reaches the red area, the warn
ing
lightliD in the instrument cluster will illumi
nate¢
page 20. Time to refuel!
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed in
¢page 234.
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An irregu
lar supply of fuel can cause engine misfiring
and fuel could enter into the exhaust system.
The catalytic converter could then overheat
and be damaged.

Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal
functions¢ &.
Messages may appear with some indicator lights .
A warning signal will sound at the same time.
The messages disappear again after a short time.
To display a message again, press the
I SE TI but

page 11. If several malfunctions occur,
each of the indicator/warning lamps will be dis
p layed in succession for about two seconds at a
time.
Some indicators lights in the display can turn on
in several colors.
8_ WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other im
portant vehicle information may resu lt in
serious personal injury or vehicle damage.
- Whenever sta lled or stopped for repa ir,
move the vehicle a safe distance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the emer
gency flasher¢

- The engine compartment of any motor vehi
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Before
you check anything in the engine compart
ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.

function of that system when you switch the igni
tion on . These systems are marked with a./ in
the following tables .
If one of these indicator
lights does not turn on, there is a malfunction in

tor light still turns on, turn the engine off and
do not continue driving. Seek profess ional as
sistance.
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicator for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably
each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication

requires oil refill or workshop service with
out delay. Do not wait until the red oil
pressure warning. starts to flash before
you respond to the low oil level warning
m. By then, your engine may already have
suffered serious damage.

A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .
• Turn off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears , the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low .
~ Pull off the road.
~ Stop the vehicle .
~T urnoff the engine.
~ Check coolant level.
~ Add coolant if necessary¢ page 193 .
~ Continue driving only after the eng ine coolant
warning/indicator light goes out .

~ Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assis
tance if necessary .
If the engine coolant level is cor rect, then the ra
diator fan may be the cause o f the malfunction .
A WARNING
--If your vehicle should break down for me
chanica l or other reasons, park at a safe dis
tance from moving traffic, turn off the en
gine and turn on the hazard warn ing lights
¢ page 45, Emergency flashers .
-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the eng ine
compartment -you risk being scalded . Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perform any
wo rk in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the
warn ing stickers

lock malfunction. You cannot switch the ignition

Your vehicle must not be towed in the event
of a malfunct ion in the electron ic steer ing col
umn lock because it cannot be stee red due to
the locked steering .
If it is towed w ith the
steering locked, there is the risk of an a cci
dent .

you may not be able to switch it on again.

I STAR T ENGIN E ST OP I button because the engine
cannot be sta rted again afte r the ig nit ion has

!;. !~ Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the Ji) indica to r li ght blink s while driving, the
E SC or ASR (An ti- Slip Reg ulation) is ac tively regu
lating.
If t h e DJ indicato r light tur ns on, the system has
sw itche d the ESC off. In th is ca se , you can swi tch
t he ign ition off and then on to swi tch the ESC on
again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys
tem is function ing fully.

a lso causes the ESC to malfunction . The brakes
still f unct ion wit h their norma l powe r, b ut ABS is
not act ive.

A WARNING
If the 11111 (USA models) . (Canada mod
e ls) b rake system indicator light turns on to
gether with the ABS and ESC ind icator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulat ing funct ion may have
failed. F unctions that stabilize the vehicle are
no longer availab le. This could cause the vehi
cle to swerve and increase the risk of slidi ng.

ABS /(8 ) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light ~ (USA models)/
Ii] (Canada mode ls) will come on for a few sec
onds when the ignition is sw itched on . T he light
will go out after an automatic check sequence is
completed .
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The war ning/ indicator light does not illum inate
when you sw itch the ignition on.
- The warning/ indicato r light does not go o ut af
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/ indicato r light illum inates while
driving.
The ESC in dicator lig ht also illuminates if there is
a malfunction in the ABS. The message
Stabiliza
tion control (ESC ): Fault! See owner's manual
also appears in the instrument cluster display
and a warn ing tone sounds.

The brake system will still re spond e ven with
out the a ssistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer a s soon as possible to re
store full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the b rake wa rning light c::;, page 15 and the ABS
warning i lluminate together there may be a mal
function in the ABS, and there may also be a ma l
function in the brake system itse lf

will not work and you will notice a change in
braking r esponse and p erformance.

M alfuncti on in the elect ronic diffe rential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together with the ABS. The ABS
war ning light will come on if there is a malfunc
tion in the EDL system

thor ized Audi deal er as soon as possible .
.8, WARNING
-If the 9 (USA models) ,11J (Canada mod
els) w arning light doe s not go ou t, or if it
comes on w hile driving, the AB S sys tem is
not working properly . The ve hicle can then
be stopped on ly with the sta ndard brakes
(without ABS). You w ill not have the protec
t ion ABS p rov ides . Contact your authorized
Audi dealer as soon as poss ible.
- USA models: If the
1111 warning light and
the
rJln wa rning light come on together, the
rear wheels could lock up first under hard
braking. Rear wheel lock -up can cause loss
of vehicle cont rol and a n accident . Have yo ur
vehicle repaired imme dia tely by your au
th oriz e d Au di dea le r or qua lified w ork s h o p.

T he II (USA models) ;fll (Canada models) indi
c a tor lig ht monitors the s afety sys tems (e .g . air
bags, p retensioners) and illumina tes fo r a few
secon ds each time you switc h the ignition on .
If the II (USA models)/ m (Canada mode ls) in
dica tor light does not go ou t, o r if i t illumin ates
whi le you a re d riving, or if i t starts to blin k, then
t h ere is a ma lf u nction somewhere in the system .
If the light does not illum inate when yo u switch
the ignit ion on, this a lso means there is a ma l
funct ion.

A WARNING
Contact your authorized Audi dealer or quali
fied workshop if the sport differentia l is faulty
or malfunctioning. The repa ir must be per
form ed by trained personnel using the co rrect
oil in orde r to ensure safe ty.
~ Ignition lock
Ill Ignition l ock defective
There is a malfunct ion in the electron ic ign ition
lock . Please go to an author ized Audi dealer or
other qua lified wor kshop to have the malfunction
repaired.
¢¢ Turn signals
Whenever you use the left N or the rig ht B
turn signal, the indicator light blinks. When yo u
use the emergency flashers, both indicator lights
f lash.
If one of the turn s ignal ligh t bu lbs burn ou t, the

Opening and closing
Central locking
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally. You have the following choices:
- Remote master key
r:!> page 33,
-Door handles with convenience key*

-Lock cylinder at the dr iver's door q page 35,
or
- Power locking switch inside
q page 34.
Autom atic locking
The automatic locking feature locks all the vehi
cle doors and the rear lid when you drive faster
than 9 mph (15 km/h) .
The car is unlocked again once the ignition key is removed . In addition, the vehicle can be unlocked
if the opening function in the power locking sys
tem sw itch or at one of the door levers is actuat
ed. The Auto Lock function can be turned on and
off in the rad io or MMI*

Addit ionally, in the event of a crash with a irbag
deployment the doors are automatically un locked to allow access to the vehicle .
Selective unlo cking
When you lock the vehicle, the power locking sys
tem w ill lock the doors and the rear lid. When un
lock ing, you can set in the radio or MMI* whether
only the d river 's door or t he entire veh icle should
be unlocked

Ant i-th eft ala rm warn ing sys tem
If the anti-theft alarm warning system detects a
break-in into the vehicle, acoust ic and visual
warn ing s ignals are tr iggered.
The anti-theft warning system is activated auto mat ically when you lock the vehicle. It is deact i
vated when unlocking using the remote key, w ith
the mechanical key, and when you switch on the ignit ion.

The alarm also tu rns off when the alarm cycle has
expired.
Turn signals
When you u nlock the veh icle, the turn signals
flash twice, when you lock it once. If they do not
flash , one of the doors, the luggage compart
ment lid or the hood is not locked or the ignition
is still switched on.
Unint entionall y lo cking yourself out
In the follow ing cases there safegua rds to pre
vent you locking your remote master key in the
vehicle:
- T he veh icle does not lock w ith the power lock
ing sw itch
q page 34 if the driver 's door is
open.
- On veh icles with convenience key*, if the most
recently used master key is in the luggage com
partment, the rear lid is automatically unlocked
again after it is closed .
Do not lock your veh icle w ith the remote master
key or convenience key* unt il all doors and the
rear lid are closed. In this way you avoid locking
yourself out acc identally.
A WARNING
- When you leave the vehicle, always remove
the ignition key and take it with you. This
w ill prevent passengers (children, for exam
ple) from accidentally being locked in the
vehicle should they accidentally press the
power locking sw itch in the front doors .
- Do not leave ch ildren inside the vehicle un
supervised . In an emergency it would be im
possible to open the doors from the outs ide
w it h out the key.
(D Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag deploy
ment all locked doors w ill be automatically
unlocked to give access to the veh icle occu
pants from the outside.
- If the power locking system should mal
function, you can lock the driver's door us ing the mechanica l key
