A WARNING
-Never adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger's seat while the vehicle is moving.
If you do th is while the veh icle is moving,
you will be out of position . A lways adjust
the dr iver's or front passenger's seat
when the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
he ight. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or ser ious injury cou ld resu lt!
- Because the seats can be electrically ad­
justed with the igni tion off, never leave
children unattended in the veh icle. Unsu­
pervised use o f the electric seat adjust­
ments may cause serious injury.
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never ride in a moving ve­
hicle with the backrest reclined. Safety
belts and the airbag system on ly offer
maximum protection when the backrest
is upr ight and the safety belts are prop­
erly positioned on the body . The more
the backrest is reclined, the greater the
ris k of persona l inju ry from an incorrect
seating position and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts.
(D Tips
- T he massage funct ion switches off auto­
matically after approximately 10 mi­
nutes.
- T he side bolsters* deflate when the driv­
er's doo r is opened. This allows you to
enter and exit comfortably. The side bol­
sters inflate again once you begin driv­
ing.

mote control key when locking the vehicle, the
function must be switched on .

To store a seat ing profile, press the
!SET !
button and then one of the memory but­
tons .
• To recall a seating profile, press and hold
the memory button until the seat is adjust­
ed to the stored settings.
• To switch the memory function for the driv­
er or front passenge r off, press the
IOFF I
button. The word OFF lights up when the
memory fu nctio n is swi tched off. Seating
profi les wi ll not be stored.

- For safety reasons, the seat setting
should only be recalled when the vehicle
is stationary -otherwise you risk having
an accident.
- If necessary, you stop the process by
press ing the
I OF F! button or any of the
memory buttons.
Adjusting the front passenger seat in

Matching the position of the driver's seat
• To adjust the front passenger seat to match
the dr iver's seat settings, select the

passenger seat> Symmetry to driver seat.
• Press and hold the control knob until the ad­
justment process is complete.

the sta rting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never t urn off the engine unti l the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering
only work when the engine is running . If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usua l­
ly would, this could lead to crashes and
ser ious injur ies .

-Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
reached operating temperature -other ­
wise yo u risk eng ine damage.
- The eng ine cannot be started by pushing
or tow ing the veh icle.
(D Tips
- After a cold engine is started, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
ca use oil pressure mus t fi rst bu ild up in
the hyd raulic valve adjusters . This is nor­
mal and not a ca use for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignit ion
switched on, the ignition will switch off
after a certai n pe riod of time. P lease
note tha t electr ica l equipment s uch as
exterior lights wi ll switch off as well
when that happens.

Ste ering lock
T he s teering locks when yo u tur n the engine
off using t he
I S TA RT ENGINE STO P! bu tton
and open the d river 's doo r. The locked steer­
ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S posi­
t ion. The engine stops if you press the
I S TAR T ENG IN E ST OP I button at speeds below
6 mph (10 km/ h) .
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power stee ring
only work when the eng ine is r unning . If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usual ­
ly would, this co uld lead to crashes and
serious injuries .
- For safety reasons , you should a lways

after some time i f th e coolant tempera­
ture rises as the result of a heat b uildup
or if the engine is hot and the engine
compartment is additionally heated by
the sun's rays.
(U) Note
Do not stop the engine immediately after
hard o r extended driving. Keep the engine
running for approximate ly two minutes to
prevent excess ive heat bu ild-up .

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome ­
chan ical park ing brake . The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
un intent ionally and rep laces the hand brake.
In addition to the normal functions of a tradi ­
tional hand brake, the electromechan ical
parking brake provides var ious convenience
and safety functions.
When starting from rest
-The integral starting assist helps you when
driving by automat ically releasing the park­
ing brake ¢

- When starting on inclines, the starting as ­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
ly rolling back . The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until suff icient
driv ing force has been built up at the
wheels.

-Yo u can apply the parking brake at any
time -even with the ignition switched
off. The ignition must be on and the
brake pedal must be pressed in order to
release the parking brake.
- Occasional noises when the parking
brake is applied and released are normal
and are not a cause for concern.
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a self-test cycle at

should not be used in the city, i n stop­
and-go traff ic, on twist ing roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -risk of accident .
- Turn off the cruise control temporar ily
when ente ring turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construct ion zones.
- Please note that inadvertent ly "rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator pedal causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because t he cr uise con trol is overridden
by the d river 's a cce le rat ion.
- If a bra ke system malfunction such as
overheat ing occurs when the cru ise con­
t ro l system is sw itched on, the braking
f unction in the system may be switched
off. The other cruise control f unctions re ­
ma in active as long as the indicator light
[~ jrn~14 (US models) !El (Canad ian mod­
els) is on.
The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes decelerate a utomat ica lly.
Changing speed

ISET ! button when driv ing at
speeds be low 20 mph (30 km/h), will au­
tomatically accelerate the vehicle to 20
mph (30 km/h), which is the minimum
speed that can be set.
© Tips
-If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- Th e electronic stabilizat ion contro l (ESC)
and the anti-s lip-regulat ion (ASR) are au­
tomatically turned on when the adaptive
cruise control is turned on. Both systems
cannot be turned off if the adaptive
cruise contro l is turned on.

"N ight v is ion assistant with pedestrian detec­
tion" uses an infrared camera to monitor the
area in front of your vehicle at night. Within
the limits of the system, it can display objects
up to about 1000 feet (300 meters) away. The
heat image of a pedestrian detected by the
camera is shown in the instrument cluster dis­
play

Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive program is selected.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical driving mode. It will then change up early and
delay the downshifts to give better fuel econ­
omy.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a k ick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty driving style characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode ) ¢ page 108.
In the tiptronic transmission, power is trans­
ferred by a torque converter.
Selector lever positions

The selector lever position engaged appears
next to the selector lever as well as in the in­
strument cluster display.
P- Park
In this selector lever position the transmis­
sion is mechanically locked. Engage P only when
the vehicle is
completely stopped¢ &

To shift in or out of posit ion P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the re lease button in the selector lever handle
wh ile moving the selector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of this position only with the
ignition on.
R -Reverse
Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the engine is running at idle speed¢ & in

Before you move the selector lever to R, press
both the button in the hand le of the se lector
lever
and the brake pedal at the same time.
When the ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.
N -Neutral
Th e transmission is in neutral in this position.
Shift to this position for standing with the
brakes applied

When the vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply
the footbrake before and wh ile moving the
lever out of N.
D/S - Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmission can be
operated either in the normal mode D or in
the sport mode 5. To select the sport mode 5,
pull the selector lever back brie fly. Pulling the
lever back again will select the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster disp lay shows the
se lected driving mode.
In the normal mode D, the transm ission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv­
ing style.
Select the sport mode 5 for sporty driving.
The vehicle makes full use of the engine's

lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
proximately 2 second, without the brake ped­
a l being pressed .
Release button
The release button on the selector lever pre­
vents the lever from being accidentally shifted
into certain positions. Depending on the direc­
tion of the shift, the se lector lever locks at d if­
ferent positions. The positions are highlighted in the illustration
c:;, fig. 116.

Starting the engine
,.. The selector lever must be in P or N.
Starting off

tor lever position such as 0/5 and release
the button .
,.. Wait briefly until the transmission has shift­
ed (you will feel a slight movement) .

Starting on an incline
,.. Activate the parking brake.

celerator pedal carefully. The parking brake
will release automatically if your seat belt is
fastened .
Under certain circumstances, such as driving
in the mounta ins, it may be usefu l to sw itch
temporarily to the manual shift program in or­
der to adj ust the gears to the driving condi­
t ions by hand

On slopes, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
This prevents too much stress from being placed on the locking mechanism.
A WARNING
-
- The vehicle can also roll when the engine
is stopped .
- Unintended vehicle movement can cause
serious injury.
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear . If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running,
