If the indicator light turns on and this mes­
sage appears, there is a malfunction in the
adaptive light system . The headlights sti ll
function .
Go to an authorized dealership to have the
headlights or the control unit for the Adaptive
Light repaired.

needles) lights on when the ign it ion is
sw itched on and the vehicle lights are
turned off. As the daylight fades, the illu­ m ination of the dials likewise d ims auto ­
mat ica lly and will go out comp lete ly when
the o utside light is ve ry low . This feat ure is
meant to remind you to switch on the
headlight s when o utsi de lig ht condi tions
become poor.

surface for storing objects . Objects p laced

proximate ly 2 mph (4 km/h) and it is ra ining .
T he higher t he rain sensor sensi tivity is set
( s w itch @to the right), the earl ier the wind­
s h ield wipe rs rea ct to moisture on the w in d ­
shield. Yo u can deac tiva te rain sensor mode in
t h e MMI, which will then activate interm ittent
mode. Select :

©-Single wipe. If you hold the lever in this
position longer, the wipers switch from slow
wiping to fast wiping.
® -Clean the windshield . The wipers wipe
one time after several seconds of driving to
remove water droplets. You can switch this
function off by moving the lever to position ®
within 10 seconds after the afterwipe. The af­
terw ipe funct ion is reactivated the next time
you switch the ignition on.
Cleaning the headlights*. The headlight wash­
er system * operates only when the headlights
are on. If you move the lever to position @,
the headlights and the night vision assistant
camera* are washed in intervals.
A WARNING
-The rain sensor is only designed to assist
and support the driver.
It remains entire­
ly the driver's responsibility to monitor
outside weather conditions and to man­
ually activate the wipers as soon as rain
or drizzle reduces visibility through the
windshield.
- The windshield must not be treated with
water-repellent materials. They can in­
crease glare under poor visibility condi­
tions such as wetness, darkness, or when
the sun is low on the horizon. In addi­
tion, they can cause the windshield wip­
ers to chatter.
- Properly functioning windshield wiper blades are required for a clear view and
safe driving~
page 49, Replacing
windshield wiper blades.
0 Note
- In the case of frost, check whether the
windshield wiper blades are frozen to
the windshield. Switching on the wind­
shield wipers can damage the wiper blades!
- Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched off (lever in position @). This helps to prevent un­
intentional switching on and damage to
the windshield wiper system.

-Do not use the wipers to clear a frosted
window. Using the wipers as a conven­
ient ice scraper will destroy the wiper
blades.
(D Tips
- The windshield wipers are switched off
when the ignition is off. Activate the
windshield wipers after the ignition is
switched back on by moving the wind­
shield wiper lever to any position.
- Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades
result in streaking. This can affect the
rain sensor function. Check your wind­
shield wiper blades regularly.
- The washer fluid nozzles of the wind­
shield washer system are heated at low
temperatures when the ignition is on.
- When stopping temporarily, e .g. at a
traffic light, the set speed of the wind­
shield wipers is automatically reduced by
one speed.
Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the windshield wiper blades when they
begin to leave streaks.

.,. Use a soft cloth and glass cleaner to clean
the windshield wiper blades.
A WARNING
Dirty windshield wiper blades can impair
your view. This can lead to accidents.

• Lift the w indshield wiper arm up from the
wi ndshield.
• Press the locking knob
(D ~ fig. 46 on the
wiper blade. Hold t he wiper blade firm ly.
• Remove the wiper blade in the direction of
the arrow .
Attaching th e wiper blade
• Install the new wipe r blade in the retaine r
on the w iper arm @until you hear it cl ick in­
to place on the wiper arm.
• Place the wiper arm back on the windshie ld .
• Turn the service pos ition
off .
A WARNING
-
For your safety, yo u should replace the
wiper blades once or tw ice a year. See your
authorized Audi dealer for rep lacement
blades.
(D Note
- The windshield wiper blades must on ly
be folded away when in the service posi­
tion! Otherwise, you risk damaging the paint on the hood or the w indshield wip·
er moto r.
- You should not
move your vehicle or
press the w indshield w iper lever when
the wip er arms are folded away from the w
indshield. The windshield wipers wou ld
move back into their original position
and co uld damage the hood and wind­
shield.
- To help prevent damage to the wiper sys­
tem, always loosen blades wh ich are fro­
zen to the windshield before operating
w ipers.
- To help prevent damage to wiper blades,
do not use gasoline, kerosene, paint
thinner, or other solvents on o r near the
w iper blades.
- To help prevent damage to the wiper
arms or other components, do not at­
tempt to move the wipe rs by hand.
¢j) Tips
- Commercial hot waxes applied by auto·
matic car washes affect the cleanability
of the windshie ld.
- You can also use the se rvice position, for
example, if you want to protect the
w indshield from icing by using a cover.
- You can not activate the service position
when the hood is open .

General information
What affects braking efficiency?
Operating condit ions and d riv ing hab it s
The brakes on today's automobi les are sti ll
subject to wear, depending largely on operat­
ing conditions and dr iving habits

vehicles that are either driven mostly in stop­
and-go city traffic or are driven hard, the brake pads should be checked by your author­
i zed Audi dealer more often than specified in
the
Warr ant y & Maint enan ce bookle t. Failure
to have your b rake pads inspected can res ult
i n red uced brake performance.
On steep slopes, you should use the brak ing
effect of the engine. This way, you p revent un­
necessa ry wea r on the brake system.
If you
must use yo ur brakes, do not ho ld the brakes
down continuously. Pump the brakes at in ter ­
va ls.
Moistu re or road salt
Unde r ce rtain conditions, for example, when
driving through wate r or very heavy rain, or
even after washing your vehicle, the braking
effect can be reduced d ue to moisture (or in
freezing conditions ice) on the brake pads . A
few careful brake app lications should dry
off
the brake pads or remove any ice coatings.
When you are driving at higher speeds with
the windshield wipers on, the brake pads will
briefly touch the brake discs in regular inter­
vals so as to improve reaction t ime when brak­
ing on wet surfaces . You the driver w ill not no­
tice anything .
The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced
when the vehicle is dr iven on a salt-covered
road and the brakes are not used . Here too,
you should clean
off accumulated salt coat ing
from b rake discs and pads with a few careful
applications of the brake

Cor ro sion
There may be a tendency for dirt to build up
on the brake pads and corrosion to form on

the d iscs if the car is not driven regu larly or
only for short trips with litt le use of the
brakes.
If the brakes a re not used frequently, o r if cor­
rosion has formed on the discs, it is adv isable
to clean
off the pads and discs by braking

Low brake fluid lev el
Malfunctions can occu r in the bra ke system if
the b rake fluid level is too low. The brake flu id
level is monitored elec tronica lly.
Brake booster
The brake booster works with vacuum pres­
su re which is created only whe n the engine is
runn ing ¢,&. .
Brake lining we ar s tatus
Brake lining wear may be checked by visual in­
spection of the condition of the brake pads
through the open ings in the w heel. If neces­
sary, the wheel may be removed fo r thi s in­
spe ction ¢

-You should perform braking maneuvers
for the purpose of cleaning the brake system only if road conditions permit .
Other road users must not be put at risk -
you may ca use an accident!
- Before descend ing a steep grade, reduce
speed and sh ift transmission into a lower
gear or lower dr iving range. Do not ride
the brakes or hold the pedal down too long or too often . Th is could cause the
brakes to get hot and diminish braking
efficiency.
- Do not " ride the brakes" by rest ing your
foot on the pedal when you do not intend
to b rake. This may cause the brakes to

Regular, proper care helps to maintain yo ur
ve hicle 's value. It can also be a requirement
when subm itting wa rranty claims for corro ­
sion damage and paint defects on the body .
The required cleaning and care prod ucts can
be obtained from your authorized Audi dea ler
or a qualified workshop . Read and follow the
i nstructions for use o n the packaging.

Car washes

The longer that deposits such as insects, bird
d rop pings , tree sap o r road sa lt rema in on the
ve hicl e, the more t he surface can be dam­
aged. High tempe rat ures such as those
caused by s unlight in cr ease t he corrosive ef­
fect.

Pressure wa shers
When washing your ve hicles w ith a pressure
washer, always follow the operating instruc­
tions provided w ith the pressure washe r. Th is
i s especially important in rega rd to t he pres ­
sure and sprayi ng di sta nce. Do not aim the
sp ray d irectly at seals on side w indows, doors,

t h e hood, the rear lid o r the sunroof * or at
ti res , rubber hoses, insulating material, sen­
sors * or camera lenses *. Keep a d istance o f at
l east 16 inches (40 cm).

Automatic car washes
Spray off the ve hicle before washing.
Make sure that the w indows and roof * are
closed and the winds hield wipers are
off . Fol ­
low instructions from the car wash operator,
especially if there are accessories attached to
you r vehicle.
If possible, use car washes that do not have
brushes .
Only use car washes where the vehicle re ­
mai ns stat io na ry an d the was hing equipmen t
moves around the ve hicle when washing and
drying. Car washes that m ove t he vehicle
thro ugh the car wash using a chain are not
recommended.
Wa shing by hand
Clean t he ve hic le starting from the top and
wor king down us ing a soft sponge or cleaning
brush. Use solvent-free clean ing products .
Washing vehicles with matte finish paint
by hand
To avoid damaging the paint when washing,
first remove dust and large particles from
you r vehicle. Insects, grease spots and fi nger­
pri nts are best removed w ith a spec ial cleane r
fo r matte finish paint .
Apply the prod uct using a microfiber cloth. To
avo id damag ing the pa int surface, do not use
too much pressure.
Rinse the vehicle thoro ughly with water. Then
clean using a neutra l shampoo and a soft mi-
