Automatic Transmission

Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmiss ion upsh ifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most econom ical
driving mode. It will then change up early and
delay the downshifts to give better fuel econ­
omy.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty driving style characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed .
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) ¢ page 107.
In the tiptronic transmission, power is trans­
ferred by a torque converter .

P - Park
In this selector lever position the transmis­
sion is mechanically locked. Engage P only

To shift in or out of position P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the re lease button in the selector lever handle
whi le moving the selector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of this position only with the
ignition on.
R- Reverse
Select R on ly when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the engine is running at idle speed¢.&. in
Driving the automatic transmission on
page 105.
Before you move the selector lever to R, press
both the button in the hand le of the selector
lever
and the brake pedal at the same time .
When the ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.
N -Neutral
The transmission is in neutral in this position.
Shift to this position for standing w ith the
brakes applied ¢

When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply
the footbrake before and whi le mov ing the
lever out of
N.
D/S -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmission can be
operated either in the norma l mode D or in
the sport mode S. To select the sport mode S,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will se lect the norma l mode
D. The instrument cluster display shows the
selected driving mode.
In the normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv­
ing style.
Select the sport mode S for sporty driv ing.
The vehicle makes full use of the engine's

lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
proximately 2 second, without the brake ped­
al being pressed .
Release button
The release button on the selector lever pre­
vents the leve r from being accidentally shifted
into certa in positions. Depending on the direc­
tion of the shift, the se lector lever locks at d if­
ferent positions. The positions are highlighted in the illustration
c!> fig . 118.

Starting the engine
.,. The selector lever must be in P or N.
Starting off
.,. Press and hold the brake pedal.

der to adjust the gears to the driving condi ­

On slopes, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
This prevents too much stress from being placed on the locking mechanism.
A WARNING

- The vehicle can also roll when the engine
is stopped .
- Unintended vehicle movement can cause
serious injury.
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear . If you must leave
your veh icle when the engine is running,

The transmission temperature has increased
significantly due to the sporty driving manner. Drive in a less sporty manner until the tem­
perature returns to the normal range and the
indicator light switches of.
l'§J Transmission malfunction: You can con­
tinue driving
There is a sys tem ma lf u nction in the transmis­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair fa­
cility soon to have the malfunction corrected .
l'§J Transmission malfunction: You can con­
tinue driving with limited functionality
There is a system ma lf u nction in the transmis­
sion. The transmission is switching to emer­
gency mode. This mode only shifts into cer­
tain gears or will no longer shift at a ll. The en­
gine may stall. Drive to your authorized A udi
dealer or qualified repair facility immediately
to have the ma lfunction corrected.
l'§J Transmission malfunction: Stop vehicle
and shift to P
Do not continue driving. Select the P selector
lever position and see your auth orized Aud i
dealer or qualified repair facility for assis­
tance.
(D Note
If the transmission switches to emergency
mode, you shou ld take the vehicle to an
authorized Audi dealers hip as soon as pos­
sible to have the cond ition corrected.
Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selec­
tor lever can be released in an emergency.

screwdriver or similar, press the bolt down
and hold it down.

P position if the ignit ion is turned on. If the
power supply fai ls (for example, the battery is
discharged) and the vehicle must be pushed
or towed, move the selector lever to the N po­
s ition first using the emergency release.

General information

Depending on your vehicle's equipment, vari­
ous parking aids w ill help you when parking
and maneuvering.

jects detected
in front of and behind the vehi ­

the vehicle in the Infotainment disp lay . This
display assists you when you are cross or par ­

i ng and maneuvering. You are aided by var ious

A WARNING
- Always look for traff ic and check the area
around your vehicle by looking at it di­
rectly as well. The parking system cannot
replace the driver's attent ion. The dr iver
is always responsible for safety during
park ing and for all other maneuvers .
- Please note that some surfaces, such as
clothing, are not detected by the system.
- Sensors and cameras have blind spots in
wh ich peop le and objects cannot be de­
tected. Be especially cautious of children and animals.
- T he sensors can be displaced by impacts
or damage to the radiator grille, bumper ,
wheel housing and the underbody. The parking systems may become impaired
as a result. Have your authorized Audi
dealer or qualified workshop check their
function.

-Make sure the sensors are not covered by
stickers, deposits or any other obstruc­
tions as it may impair the sensor func­
tion . For information on cleaning, refer

- Some objects are not detected by the
system under certain c ircumstances :
- Objects such as ba rrie r chains, trailer
draw bars, vertical po les or fences
- Objects above the sensors such as wall
extensions
- Objects w ith specific surfaces or st ruc­
tures such as chain link fences or pow­
der snow.
- If you continue driving closer to a low-ly­
ing object, it may disappea r from the
sensor range. Note that you w ill no lon­
ger be warned about this obstacle.
@ Tips
- T he system may provide a warning even
tho ugh there are no obstacles in the cov­
erage area in some situations, such as:
- certain road surfaces or for long grass.
- externa l ultrasonic sources e.g. from
clean ing vehicles.
- heavy rain, snow or thick vehicle ex­
ha ust.
- We recommend that you practice park­
ing in a traff ic-free location or park ing
lot to become familiar w ith the system.
When doing this, there should be good light and weather cond itions .

to read and observe for your own safety, the
safety of your passengers and others . We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, a irbags, ch ild restra ints as
well as child safety. Your safety is for us

ty number 1.

safety as well as that of your passengers .
The information in this se ction app lies to all
model ve rsions of your veh icle . Some of the
feat ures described in this sec tions may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others . If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that you follow the in­
struct ions and heed the WARNINGS in
this Manual. It is in your interest and in
the inte rest of you r passengers.
- Always keep the complete Owner's Liter­
ature in your Audi when you lend or sell

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condi­
tion of the vehicle, the driver as well as the
driver 's ability to concentrate on the road
without being distracted.
The driver is respons ible for the safety of the
veh icle and all of its occupants.
If your ability
to drive is impai red, safety r isks for everybody
in the vehicle increase and you also become a
hazard to everyone else on the road ¢

Therefore:
.. Do not let yourself be distracted by passen­
gers or by using a cellular telephone.
.. NEVER drive when your driving ability is im­
paired (by medications, alcohol, drugs, etc.).
.. Observe all traffic laws, rules of the road
and speed limits and plain common sense .
.. ALWAYS adjust your speed to road, traff ic
and weather conditions .
.,. Take frequent breaks on long trips. Do not
drive for more than two hours at a stretch.
.. Do NOT drive when you are t ired, under
pressure or when you are stressed.

tant for safe, relaxed driving .

For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the driver's seat to the
follow ing position:
.. Adjust the driver's seat so that you can easi ­
ly push the pedals all the way to the floor
wh ile keeping your knee(s) slightly bent

.. Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upr ight position so that your back
comes in full contact w ith it when you drive.
.. Adjust the steering wheel so that th ere is a
distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) be­
tween the steering wheel and yo ur breast

Wearing safety belts correctly saves lives!
This chapter explains why safety be lts are nec ­
essary, how they work and how to adjust and
wear them correctly .
.. Read a ll the information that fo llows and
heed all of the instructions and WARNINGS.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them
improperly increases the risk of ser ious
personal in jury and death .
- Safety belts are the sing le most effective
means avai lab le to reduce the risk of se­
r ious injury and dea th in a utomob ile acci­
dents. For your protection and that of
yo ur passenge rs, always co rrectly wear
safety belts when the vehicle is moving.
- Pregnant women, injured, or physically
im paired perso ns m ust also use safety
belts. Lik e all veh icle occup ants, they are
more like ly to be ser iously injured if they
do not wea r safety be lts . The best way to
protect a fetus is to protect the mother -
throughout the entire pregnancy.
Number of seats
Your Audi has a total of four seating positions: two in the front and two in the rear. Each seat­
ing position has a safety belt .

Why safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for
people riding in vehicles .

The physical principles are simple. Both the
vehicle and the passengers possess energy
which varies w ith veh icle speed and body
weight . Engineers call this energy "kinetic en­
ergy."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the
greater the vehicle's weight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash.
Vehicle speed is the most significant factor . If
the speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to
50 km/h), the energy increases 4 t imes!
Because the passengers of this vehicle are not
using safety belts¢

mov ing just before the crash, until something

The same principles apply to people sitting in
a vehicle that is involved in a frontal collision.
Even at city speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to 50
km/h), the forces acting on the body can
reach one ton (2,000 lbs, or 1,000 kg) or
more . At greater speeds, these forces are even
higher.
People who do not use safety belts are also
not attached to their vehicle . In a frontal colli­
sion they will also keep moving forward at the
speed their vehicle was travelling just before
the crash . Of course, the laws of physics don't
just app ly to frontal collisions, they determine
what happens in all kinds of accidents and col­
lisions.
What happens to occupants not wearing safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed. Always wear your safety belts!

Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety belt is equipped w ith an automat­
i c belt retracto r on the shoulder be lt. This fea­
ture locks the be lt whe n the belt is pulled out
fast, dur ing hard braking and i n an accident.
The belt may also lock when you drive up or
down a steep hill or throug h a sharp curve.
During normal driv ing the belt lets you move
freely.
Safety belt pretensioners
The sa fety belts are equipped with a be lt pre ­
tensioner that helps to tighten the safety belt
and remove s lack when the pretensioner is ac ­
tivated ¢

Convertible locking retractor

le for another seat . Attaching the belt to
the wrong buckle will reduce s afety be lt

e d ca n be seriously injured by the safe ty

ge r parts of the body into cr itical areas
like the abdomen.
