Trailer towing
Driving with a trailer
General information
Your Audi was designed primarily for passenger transpor­
tation.
If you plan to tow a trailer, please remember that the additional load
wi ll affect durability, economy and performance.
Trai ler towing not on ly p laces more stress on the vehicle, it a lso ca lls
for more concentration from the driver.
For this reasons, always fo llow the operating and driving instruc ­
tions provided and use common sense. •
Technical requirements
Traile r hit ch
Use a weight -carrying hitch conforming to the gross trailer weight.
The hitch must be suitab le for your vehicle and tra iler and must be
mounted secure ly on the vehicle's chassis at a
technically sound
location . Use only a trailer hitch w ith removable ball mount. A lways
check with the trai ler hitch manufacturer to make sure that you are
using the correct hitch .
Do not use a bumper hit ch .
The hitch must be installed in such a way that it does not interfere
w ith the impact-absorbing bumper system . No modifications
should be made to the vehicle exhaust and brake systems. From
time to time, check that all hitch mount ing bolts remain securely
fastened.
When you are not towing a trailer, remove the trailer hitch ball
mount. This prevents the hitch from causing damage should your
vehic le be struck from behind

Tire pre ssure
When towing a trailer, inflate the tires of your vehic le to the cold tire
pressure listed under "Full load"on the sticker on the right door­
jamb. Inflate trai ler tires to trai ler and tire manufacturers' specifica ­
tions.
Lights
The head ligh t settings should be checked wit h the trai ler attached
before driving off. Have the head lights adjusted as necessary so
t hat you can see the road ahead but not blind oncoming traffic.
Check to make sure both vehicle and trailer lights are working prop ­
erly.
Engin e cool ing sy stem
Towing a t rai ler makes the engine wo rk ha rder . It is important that
the cooling system's performance stands up to the additiona l
strain. Make sure that the coo ling syste m has enoug h fluid.
Traile r br akes
If your traile r is equipped wi th a braking system, check to be sure
that it conforms to al l regu lations.
T he trailer hydraulic brake system must not be directly connected to
the vehic le's hydrau lic brake sys tem.
Safety chai ns
Be sure trailer safety chains are properly connected from the trailer
to the h itch on the vehicle. Leave enough slack in the chains to
permit turning corners. When you install safety chains, make sure
they will not drag on the road when you are driving.
The chains should cross under the trailer tongue to prevent it from
dropping in case of separation from the hitch. _.

Trailer lights
Trailer lights must meet all regulations. Be sure to check with your
authorized Audi dealer for correct wiring, switches and relays.
Mirrors
If you are unable to see the traffic behind you using the regular
outside mirrors, then you
must install extended mirrors. It is impor­
tant that you
always have clear vision to the rear .
& WARNING
After removing the trailer hitch, do not store it in your vehicle. In
case of sudden braking, the hitch could fly forward and injure you
or your passengers .

Operating instructions
Maximum trailer weight
A trailer for your vehicle is limited to a typical class 1 or class 2
trailer.
Trailer load distribution
Be sure the load in the trailer is held securely in place to guard
against shifting, be it forward, backward or sideways.
Never allow a passenger to ride in a trailer:::::, & in "Driving instruc­
tions".
Tire pressure
When towing a trailer, inflate the tires of your vehicle to the cold tire
pressure listed under "Full load" on the sticker on the right door­
jamb. Inflate trailer tires to trailer and tire manufacturers' specifica­
tions.

The

before driving off. Adjust as necessary so that you can see the road
ahead but not blind oncoming traffic.

consideration.
To obtain the best possible handling of vehicle and trailer,
please note the following:
Do not tow a loaded trailer when your car itself is not
loaded.
- Be especially careful when passing other vehicles.
Observe speed limits.
Do not drive at the maximum permissible speed.
- Always apply brakes early.
Monitor the temperature gauge.

Closing the engine hood
- Pull the hood down until the pressure from the strut is
reduced.
- Let the hood
drop down and latch in place. Do not try to
push it shut;
it may fail to engage~& .
& WARNING
A hood that is not completely latched could fly up and block your
view while driving.
• When you close the engine hood, check it to make sure the
safety catch has properly engaged. The hood should be flush with
the surrounding vehicle body parts.
• If you notice while driving that the hood is not secured prop­
erly, stop at once and close it. •
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the engine
compartment!
Whenever you must perform any work in the engine compartment,
for example checking and filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury always
observe the following WARNINGS. The engine compartment of any
vehicle is a hazardous area!

& WARNING
To help avoid injury, before you check anything under the hood :
• Turn off the engine.
• Remove the ignition key.
• Set the parking brake fully .

• Move selector lever of automatic transmission to "P" {Park);
put manual transmission in Neutral.
• Always let the engine cool down. Hot components will burn
skin on contact.
• To reduce the risk of being burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood .
• Keep children away from the engine compartment.
• Never spill fluids on hot engine components. They can cause a
fire.
• Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary electric fan is
temperature controlled and can switch on suddenly.
• Never open the coolant reservoir cap when the engine is still
warm. The coolant system is pressurized and hot coolant could
spray out!
• Protect your face, hands and arm from steam or hot engine
coolant by placing a thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir.
• If work on the fuel system or the electrical system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery .
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in
the engine compartment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher immediately available.
• To avoid electrical shock and personal injury while the engine
is running or being started, never touch :
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage electronic ignition
system.

Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS::::,

- Unscrew the cap ce::,; to the e ngine oil filling hole
::::> fig. 168.
Carefully top off with the appropriate oil in 0.5 liter doses.
- Check the oil level again after two minutes::::,
page 229.
Top off the oil again, if necessary.
- Screw the cap back on the filling hole and slide the oil
d ips tick in as far as it will go.
& WARNING
• While topping off, the oil must not come in contact with hot
engine parts -fire hazard!
• The oil filler cap must be properly secured to prevent oil from
being sprayed on the hot engine and exhaust system when the
engine is running -fire hazard!
• If your skin has come in contact with the engine oil, you must
subsequently cleanse it thoroughly.
0 Note
• The oil level must not be above range @-danger of converter or
engine damage! Contact a qualified workshop to draw off oil, if
necessary .
• Audi does not recommend the use of oil additives. They may
damage the engine and adversely affect your New Vehicle Limited
Warranty .
<£> For the sake of the environment
• Under no circumstances can the oil come in contact with the
sewage network or the soil.
• Observe and fol low legal regulations when disposing of empty
oi l containers. •
Changing the engine oil
We recommend that hove your oil changed by an autho ­
rized Audi dealer or a qualified service station.
Before you check anything in the engine compartment, always read
and heed all WARNINGS~
& in "Working in the engine compart­
ment" on
page 224.
T he engine oil must be changed according to the intervals specified
in your Warranty
& Maintenance booklet. This is very important
because the lubricating properties of oil diminish gradually during
normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oil shou ld be changed more
frequently. Change oil more often if you drive most ly short
distances , operate the vehicle in dusty areas or under predomi­
nantly stop -and -go traffic conditions, or have your vehicle where
temperatures remain below freezing for extended periods . .,_

• If you use eng ine oi l tha t does not expressly conform to Audi oil
specification VW 507 00, very serious and very expensive damage to
your vehicle's engine wil l occu r. Engine damage caused by using
the wrong engine oi l is not covered by your New Vehicle Limited
Warranty .
• Not a ll commercia lly available oils conform to this very rigid Audi
oi l quality standard even though they may be synthe tic -based and
have the same viscosity. •
Engine cooling system
Coolant
The engine coolant perf orms two functions: it keeps the
engine from overheating an d it protects the engine from
freezing in the winter.
The cooling system is sealed and general ly requires litt le attention.
The coo ling system has been fi lled at the factory with a permanent
coo lant which does not need to be changed. The coolant consists of
a mixture of water and the manufacturer's glycol -basedcoolant
additive G12+ + antifreeze with anti corrosion additives (50% for USA
models; 60% for Canadian mode ls) . This mixture both assures the
necessary frost protection and protects metal components in the
engine's cooling system from corrosion and scaling. It also raises
the boil ing point o f the coolant.
Do not reduce the concentration of the coo lant in the summer by
adding pla in water. The proporti on of coolant additive mu st b e at
l e as t 50 % but not more than 60 % to maintain antifreeze protection
and cooling efficiency . If the coolant frost protect ion is too low, the
coo lant could freeze and damage the vehicle heating and engine
coo ling system.
For year-round driving, antifreeze is added at the factory for temper ­
atures down to :
• -31 °F ( -35 °C) USA
• -40 °F ( -40 °C) Canada .
You can mix the G12 ++ coolan t additive with other additives G12 + or
G12. Always check with your authorized Audi dealer.

Di sco nnecting the batt ery
Some vehic le functions (power window regulators, for example) are
lost if the battery termina ls are disconnected. These functions have
to be relearned after the battery terminals are connected again . To
prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehicle el ectrical system if absolutely necessary.
Vehic les not driven f or lo ng peri o ds a nd sho rt -di stan ce
o pera tion
The battery can a lso become discharged with the veh ic le stationary
by id ling current consumers . When the vehic le is sta tionary
(planned event) during the
cold t ime of the year, you should remove
the battery and store it in a nonfreezing area . This way you prevent
that the battery "freezes" and thereby is destroyed . During the
w arm er time of the year it is sufficient to disconnect the negative
terminal from the battery . Occasionally charge even a disconnected
battery .
Wint er opera ti on
During the winter months, battery capacity tends to decrease as
tempera tures drop . This is because more power is a lso consumed
while starting, and the headlights, rear window defogger, etc., are
used more often .
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, particularly in city traffic or
when trave ling only short distances. Let your authorized Audi dea ler
check the capacity of the vehicle battery before w inter sets in
=>
page 239. A well charged battery will not only prevent starting
problems when the weather is cold, but w ill also last longer.
Replacin g battery
The new battery m ust h ave the same capacity , voltage (12 volts),
amperage, construction and p lug sea ling, as the orig inal battery.
Specif ications are listed on the battery housing. Batteries special ly
developed by Audi fulfil l the maintenance, output, and safety
requirements.
When instal ling the battery, make sure the ignition and all electrica l
consumers are switched off=>

We recommend that you use maintenance -free or c y c le -resis­
tant /leak -proof
batte ries according to the sta ndards TL 825 06 (from
December 1997) and VW 7 50 73 (from August 2001).
(D Note
• All work on the battery requires technical knowledge . Please
contact an Audi dealership or another authorized fac ility for ques ­
tions about the battery- danger of acid burns and exp losion hazard!
• The battery must not be opened! Do not try to change the
battery's liquid level, otherwise detonating gas wil l escape from the
bat tery -explosion hazard!
• The AGM battery in the luggage compartment cannot leak,
because the electrolyte for this battery is abso rbed in to a special
glass mat . This leak-proof battery must not be replace with a
conventiona l battery.
• Make sure the ventilation hose on the side of the battery is
connected, otherwise fumes or battery acid can leak out.
• Battery holder and terminals always have to be secured correctly .
• Before all work on the ba ttery follow the
warning s below=> & in
"Working on the battery" on
page 238.
Because of the problem of proper disposal of a battery, we recom­
mend your authorized Audi deale r change the battery for you .
Batteries contain sulfuric acid and lead and must always be
disposed of properly in comp liance with a ll environmental regula ­
tions . D isposing of vehicle batteries improperly is very dangerous to
the environment. Make sure that the removed batte ry cannot over ­
balance , otherwise sulfuric acid might escape! •

• The tire pressures should only be checked and adjusted when
t he tires are cold . The s lig htly raised pressures of warm tires must
not be reduced .
• Adjust the ti re pressure to t he loa d you are carrying.
• Reinstal l the valve stem cap on the valve.
When should I c heck the tire pressure?
The correct ti re p re ssure is especially impo rtant at h ig h speeds . The
pressure should the re fore be checked a t le ast once a month and
a lways before starting a journey. Do not forget to check the tire pres ­
sure for the spare whee l

When should
I adjust the tire pressure s?
Adjust the tire pressure to the load you are carrying. A fter chang ing
a wheel
or r eplac ing whee ls you have to adjus t th e tire pre ssures on
a ll whee ls. In addit io n, you must the n initia lize the new t ire pres ­
sures in the tire pressure monitoring system* =>
page 263.
& WARNING
Incorrect tire pressures and/or underinflation can lead sudden tire
failure, los s of control, colli sion , serious personal injury or even
death .
• When the warning symbol appears in the instrument
c luster , stop and inspect the tire s.
• Incorrect tire pressure and /or underinflation can cause
increased tire wear and can affect the handling of the vehicle and
stopping ability .
• Incorrect tire pressures and /or underinfla tion can also lead to
sudden tire failure , including a blowout and sudden deflation ,
causing loss of vehicle control .
• The driver is responsible for the correct tire pressures for all
tires on the vehicle. The applicable pre ssure values are located on
a sticke r on the driver 's side B -pillar o r on the inside of the fuel
filler flap.
& WARNING (continued )
• Only when all tires on the vehicle are filled to the correct pre s­
sure , the tire pres sure monitoring sy stem * can work correctly.
• The use of incorrect tire pressure values can lead to accidents
or other damage . Therefore it is e ssential that the driver observe
the specified tire pressure v alue s for the tires and the correct pres­
sures for the function of the tire pre ssure monitoring system* .
• Always inflate tires to the recommended and correct tire pres ­
s ure before driving off.
• Driving with underinflated tires bend more , letting them get
too hot re sulting in tread separation , sudden tire fa ilure and loss
of control.
• Excessive speed and /overloading can cause heat build -up ,
sudden tire failure and loss of control.
• If the tire pressure is too low or too high, the tires will wear
prematurely and the vehicle will not handle well.
• If the tire is not flat and you do not have to change a wheel
immediately , drive at reduced speed to the nearest service station
to che ck the tire pressure and add air as required .
0 Note
Driving without valve stem caps can cause damage to the tire
va lves. To prevent this, always make sure that fac tory ins talled va lve
stem caps on all whee ls are securely mounted on the valve.
Underinflated tires wi ll also increase the fuel consumption. •
Tires and vehicle load limits
There are limits to the amount of load or weight that any vehic le and

service life.
• Always driv e with the va lv e stem caps s ecure ly m ounted. We

rized Audi d ealer to replac e lost valve stem caps .
T he installat ion of replacement tires with steel cord body plies in
t he ti re s id ew all m ay ca use ma lfun ction o f th e tire press ure m oni­
toring system *, and is not recommended (co rd mater ial information
i n mo lded on t he tire sid ewa ll).
Always check your t ire pressure mo nitoring system* indicator after
r eplaci ng o ne or more tir es o n you r veh ic le . If t he ti re p ressu re
mo nito ring syste m* in dicato r flashes o r is ill um in ated, your s ystem
is not working p rope rly . Yo ur replacement t ire might be inco mpat ­
i b le with you r tir e p ressure mon itori ng sys te m *, or so me comp o­
nent of the tire pressure monitoring system * may be damaged .
& WARNING
• Using incorrect or unmatched tires and / or wheels or improper
tire and wheel combinations can lead to loss of control , collision
and serious personal injury .
• Always use tires , rims and wheel bolts that meet the specifica ­
tions of original factory-installed tires or other combinations that
have been specifically approved by the vehicle manufacturer .
• Tires age even if they are not being used and can fail suddenly,
espe cially at high speeds . Tires that are more than 6 years old can
only be used in an emergency and then with special care and at
lower speeds.
• Never mount used tires on your vehicle if you are not sure of
their "previous history. " Old used tires may have been damaged
even though the damage cannot be seen that can lead to sudden
tire failure and loss of vehicle control.

• All four wheels must be fitted with radial tires of the same type,
size {rolling circumference ) and the same tread pattern. Driving
with different tires reduces vehicle handling and can lead to a loss
of control.
• If the spare tire is not the same as the tires that are mounted
on the vehicle -for example with winter tires -only use the spare
tire for a short period of time and drive with extra care . Refit the
normal road wheel as soon as safely possible.
• Never drive faster than the maximum speed for which the tires
on your vehicle are rated because tires that are driven faster than
their rated speed can fail suddenly .
• Overloading tires cause heat build-up , sudden tire failure ,
including a blowout and sudden deflation and loss of control.
• Temperature grades apply to tires that are properly inflated and
not over or underinflated.
• For technical reasons it is not always possible to use wheels
from other vehicles -in some cases not even wheels from the
same vehicle model.
• If you install wheel trim discs on the vehicle wheels , make sure
that the air flow to the brakes is not blocked . Reduced airflow to
the brakes can them to overheat , increasing stopping distances
and causing a collision .
• Run flat tires may only be used on vehicles that were equipped
with them at the factory . The vehicle must have a chassis designed
for run flat tires and a factory-installed tire pressure monitoring
system* that indicates a loss of tire pressure . Incorrect use of run
flat tires can lead to vehicle damage or accidents . Check with an
authorized Audi dealer or tire specialist to see if your vehicle can
be equipped with run flat tires . If run flat tires are used , they must
be installed on all four wheels . Mi xing tire types is not permitted. _,.

• Always make sure the spare tire and even a flat tire are secured
in place and not loose, otherwise they could fly forward, causing
personal injury to passengers in the vehicle in an accident or
sudden maneuver .
• Never use the jack supplied with your Audi on another vehicle,
particularly on a heavier one. The jack is only suitable for use on
the vehicle it came with. •

Compact spare wheel
The compact spare wheel is only intended to be used for
a short Nme.

You will find the compact spare wheel under the floor in the luggage
compartment. It is secured with a large nut.
Using the compact spare wheel
The compact spare wheel is only intended for emergencies until you
can reach a repair shop. Replace it as quickly as possible with a
normal wheel.
There are some restrictions on the use of the compact spare wheel
=>
& -The compact spare wheel has been developed especially for your type of vehicle
. It must not be exchanged for the compact
spare wheel from another type of vehicle.
Normal summer or winter tires must not be installed on the
compact spare wheel rim.
Snow chains
For technical reasons, the use of snow chains on the compact spare
wheel is
not permitted .
If you do have to drive with snow chains and have a tire failure on a
front wheel, install the spare wheel in place of a rear wheel. Install
the snow chains on the rear wheel and use it to replace the defective
front wheel.
Using the spare wheel
The spare wheel is only intended for emergencies until you can
reach a repair shop. Replace it as quickly as possible with a normal
wheel.

spare wheel has been developed especially for your type of vehicle.
I t must not be exchanged for the spare wheel from another type of
vehicle.

Snow tires

If you do have to drive with snow chains and have a tire failure on a
front wheel, install the spare wheel in place of a rear wheel. Install
the snow chains on the rear wheel and use it to replace the defective
front wheel.

& WARNING
Always store jacking equipment, spare wheel in the luggage
compartment. Tighten screw for the spare wheel securely. Under
no circumstances should you store the spare wheel or jack and
tools unsecured in the passenger compartment. This could cause
serious personal injury to passengers
in the vehicle in case of a
collision.
• The compact spare tire is for temporary use only and is so
marked on the sidewalls.
• Do not drive at speeds exceeding 50 mph (80 km/hi with the
compact spare wheel mounted. Also rapid acceleration, hard
braking and hard cornering must be avoided to help prevent loss
of vehicle control.
• Any continuous road use of the compact spare tire may result
in tire failure, loss of vehicle control and injury to vehicle occu­
pants.
• Do not put a snow chain on your compact spare tire. Due to the
smaller tire size, the chain will not fit properly and can thus
damage your vehicle. You could also lose the chain, as well as
control of the vehicle .
• If you have a flat front tire in road conditions which require
snow chains, first remove the undamaged rear wheel and mount
the compact spare wheel in its place. Then remove the damaged
front wheel, take the snow chains off it and attach them to the
wheel taken from the rear. This wheel can now be mounted on the
front with its snow chains. Check and adjust tire pressure promptly.
• Never use two or more compact spare tires at the same time.

When using the compact spare wheel, note the following: •
After installing the compact spare wheel, the tire inflation pres­
sure should be checked and, if necessary, increased to 60 psi (4 .2
barl.
• The load carrying capacity is marked on the tire sidewal ls and
must not be exceeded .
• After installing the compact spare wheel, make sure that you
remount the flat tire in its storage area properly .
• The compact spare tire should be properly remounted in its

• Because the compact spare tire was specifically designed for
your vehicle, it must not be used on any other vehicle . Likewise,
compact spare wheels from other vehic les must not be used on your
vehicle.
• The compact spare tire must not be mounted on any other
wheels, nor must standard tires, snow tires, wheel covers or trim
rings be used with the compact spare wheel. If such use is
attempted, damage to these items or other vehicle components
may occur.

Check the inflation pressure of the compact spare tire (60 psi/4 .2
bar) periodically to keep the tire ready for use .•
