Driver information display
[ i ] Tips
• The engine oil p re ss ure symbol 9:::r. is not an indicator for a low
engine oil level. Do not rely on it . In stead , check the oil level in your
engine at regular interval s, preferably each time you refuel , and
alway s before going on a l ong trip.
• The yellow oil level warning indication · require s oil refill or
workshop service w ithout delay . Do not wait until the red oil pres­
s ure warning symbol
9:::r. s tarts to flash before you respond to the
l ow oil level warning . By then , yo ur engine may already have
s uffered serious damage. •
Fuel supply too low f
When the symbol illuminates, t his mea ns there are about 2.6
gallons (10 liters) of fuel left in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

If the symbol lights up, even when there is ample fuel in the tank,
and the te xt
Tank system malfunction! Please contact workshop

nates . T he engine speed is limited to the speed displayed in the
driver in for mation sys tem . Keep in mind tha t the engi ne s peed wi ll
not exceed the va lue d isplayed in the driver information system, for
exam ple when downshifting.
P lease go to an authorized Audi deale r or other qua lified workshop
to have the malfunction repaired. •

Diesel particulate filter clogged
Particulate filter ! See owner's manual
If the indicator light in the instrument c luster comes on, the
diesel particulate fi lte r has become blocked with soot as the resul t
of constant short -distance driving . When the symbol illumi -
nates, you can alte r yo ur driving style to assist the filter self­
clean ing process. Drive for app roxi mately 15 m inutes in 4th or 5th
gea r (automatic transmission with the selector lever in the S posi ­
t ion) at a minimum s peed of 37 mph (60 km/h) and an e ngine speed
of approximately 2 ,000 R PM . T he temperature increase that wil l
r esu lt from this ca n burn o ff the soot in the fil te r. The symbo l w ill
switc h off when the cleaning is successful.
I f the sy mbo l d oes not swi tch off, see you r aut hor ized deale r or
other qua lif ied workshop to have the prob lem correc ted .
As long as the indicator light remains on (diesel particulate filter
plugged), you can e xpect i ncreased fue l co nsu mption a nd possibly
a lso a loss of engine performance.
A message may a lso be displayed in the ins tru me nt cluste r
informing you or prompting necessary act ion .
For more information on the diese l particulate filter, refer to
~ page 797.

Always adapt your speed to the current weather, road and traffic
conditions. You should never disobey traffic laws in order to follow
driving recommendation s. •

Starting and stopping the engine
Starting the engine
The engine can only be st arted with your origin al Audi
key.

Do not depress the gas pedal when star ting the eng ine!
- Let go of the key as soon as the engine starts.
A co ld engine may sound loud after it has been started. This is due
to the hydrau lic va lves building up oi l pressure . This is normal and
is not a need for concern .
I f the engine does not start i mmediately, stop trying after 10
seconds and then try to res tart the engine about 30 seconds la ter .
Glow plug system *
D ie sel engin es
are equ ipped wi th a glow p lug system whose
preheating time is controlled by the coolant and outside tempera ­
ture . S tar t the engine
immediately after the glow plug indicator l ight
switches off .
The glow plug indicator light wi ll only il luminate for approximately
1 s econd when the engin e is warm or the outside temp erature is
higher than 46 °F (8 °C). That means you can start the engine
imme­
diately .
To st art the di esel engin e after the fuel t ank ha s be en
run dr y
If the fue l tank was run completely dry, the starting process after
refuel ing with diesel fuel can take longer than usual -up to one
minute. This is because the fue l system first has to be vented o f air
while starting. _,.

If you should drive off with the parking brake sti ll set, a warning tone
will sound and the fo llowing wil l appear in the instrument cluster to
remind you to re lease the parking brake:
Parking brak e set
The parking brake warning comes on only after you have driven for
longer than 3 seconds and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h).
The parking b rake warning light Brake (USA)/ «D>
(CDN) illuminates
when the parking brake is set and you switch on the ignition .

Alway s re leas e the par king br ake completely . A p artiall y engaged
br ake w ill overheat the r ear brake s, reduce their effective ness and
ca use e xcessive w ear. T his co uld le ad to brake failur e and an acc i­
dent .

Only after the vehicle has come to co mplete stop, should you firm ly
set the parking brake and either move the gearshift lever into 1st .
gear (manual transmission) or move the selector lever into "P"
(Automatic transmission). •

Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling away, there are a
few things you should do.
When you park your vehic le, do the fo llowi ng:
- Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
- Set the parking bra ke firm ly .
- Move the selector lever into the
P pos ition ( automatic
tran smi ssion)
or m ove the gea rshi ft lever into 1s t. gear
(manual transmission ) ~ &.
- Switch off the engine and remove the ignitio n key from
t h e igniti on loc k.
Wh at else you should d o wh en p arking your vehicle o n
a n i ncline or dec line
Turn the steering wheel so that if the vehicle should start to roll, it
will ro ll into the curb.
I f you are parking on a
declin e (the front of your vehic le facing
downhill!, turn the front wheels to the right so that they point
toward the curb .
If you are parking on an incline (the font of your vehicle fac ing
uphill!, turn the front whee ls to the left so that they point
away from
the curb.
Move the selector lever into the P position ( autom atic tran sm iss ion)
or move the gearshift leve r into 1st. gear (manual tr ansmi ssion ).

S tronic transmission
Applies to vehicles: w ith S tronic®
Introduction
Your vehicle is equipped with a S tronic transmission, also called a
double -clutch system/transmission.
Power is transferred between the engine and the transmission by means of two independent clutches. They replace the torque
converter of conventional automatic transmissions and al low the
vehic le to accelerate without a noticeable break in the power flow .
With the aid of
ti pt ronic, the gears can optionally be shifted manu­
ally => page 118 . •

Selector lever positions
All the selector lever positions are explained in this
section .

The se lector lever position is shown in the instrument cluster
display by highlighting the appropriate symbol.
P -Park lock
In this position the gears are mechanically locked .
The park lock must only be engaged w ith the vehic le
stationary
=> & .
To engage P and to remove the lever from this position, you must
depress the release button (button in the selector lever handle)
and
simultaneously you must step on the brake pedal.
R -reverse
In this position, reverse is engaged.
Reverse gear must only be engaged with the vehic le
stationary and
the engine running at id le speed =>& .
To engage R, you have to depress the release button
and simulta­
neously step on the brake pedal. In the R position, the back -up lights
i ll uminate with the ignition on.
N -N eutra l
The transmission is in neutra l in this pos ition.
D -Norm al po siti on fo r dri vin g fo rw ard
In this position, the forward gears are automatical ly shifted up and
down, depending on engine load and vehicle speed.
To engage S from
N, the brake peda l must be depressed at speeds
below 5 km/h or when the vehicle is stationary=>& .
In certain circumstances (driving in the mountains for examp le) it
can be beneficial to switch temporarily to the manual shift program
=>
page 118 in order to adjust the gear ratios to driving conditions
manually .
S -S po rt setting
The S setting should be selected for sporting driving. The power
reserves of the engine can be fully exploited through later upshifts .
To engage S from N, the brake peda l must be depressed at speeds
below 5 km/h or when the vehicle is stationary=>& . .,_

& WARNING
• Never place the selector lever in the R or P po sition while the
vehicle is moving -risk of an accident !
• W ith the engine running , it is necessary to hold the vehicle with
the foot brake in all selector lever positions (except P and Nl,
because even at idle speed the transfer of power is never
c ompletely interrupted -the vehicle ''creeps ". If the vehicle is
stationary and the transmission is engaged , the engine should
never be speeded up unintentionally (e.g . manually from under the
hood). Otherwi se the vehicle will immediately start to move -
sometimes even if the parking brake is firmly applied - risk of an
accident!
• Before you or other persons open the hood and work on a
running engine , the selector lever must be moved to P and the
parking brake applied firmly - risk of an accident! Follow the
warning stickers~
page 215 , "Engine compa rtment" .

If you have inadve rtently sh ifting into N while the vehic le is mov ing,
you shou ld remove your foot from the acce lerator and wait unti l the
en gine sp eed has dropped to idle be fore s hift ing bac k to Dor S . •

Automatic selector lever lock ~
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the igni­
t ion is on . T o move t he lev er fr om these p ositio ns t he d riv er mus t
depress the bra ke peda l. As a reminder to the driver, the fol lowing
w arning appears i n th e i ns trume nt cluster dis play when th e se lec tor
is in P and N:

Steering wheel with Tiptronic ® controls
The selector paddles allow the driver to keep both hands
on the steering wheel when shifting gears.

The selector paddles on the steering wheel are activated when the se lector lever on the center console is in
D , S , or in the manua l posi ­
tion (Tiptronic mode) .
You can a lso shift gears in the Tiptronic mode using the se lector
lever on the center console .
[ i] Tips
With the gear selector lever in ei ther "D" or "S" the transmission wi ll
switch back to the automatic mode if you do not use the paddles
within approx . 30 seconds .•

Kick -down feature
T he kick-down feature allows maximum acceleration.
If you depress the accelerator pedal ful ly beyond the ful l- throt tle
position, the transmission automatically downshifts one gear,
depending on vehic le speed a nd eng ine rpm . The upshi ft into the
next higher gear takes place as soon as the max imum specified
engine speed is reached .

Please note th at th e drive wheel s can spin if the kick -do wn is used
o n a s mooth slippery r oad -ri sk of sk idding! •

Launch Control Program
The Launch Control Program permits maximum accelera­
ti on.
In order to use Launc h Control, t he ASR (Anti-Slip Regula­
tion) must be disab led . When ASR is disabled, the ESP
warning/indicator light in t he instrument cluster illumi ­
nates . So that Launch Control can be used, the engine must
be at operat ing temperature and the stee ring wheel must
not be turned.
- With the engine running, briefly press the ESP button.
The message "ASR off" appears in the instrument c luster
disp lay .
- Shift the gear lever to "S" or the tiptronic® pos ition.
- Step on the brake peda l w ith yo ur left foo t and keep the
brake peda l fully depressed for at least one second . _,.

- With your right foot, step on the accelerator to the wide­
open throttle position or Kickdown. The engine speed
settles at about
3,200 rpm.
Take your left foot off the brake.
The S tronic® in your vehicle is electronically controlled. A special
Launch Control Program provides th e best acceleration from a
standing start .
& WARNING
• Always adapt your driving to the traffic flow.
• Only use Launch Control when road and traffic conditions allow
it and other drivers will not be endangered or annoyed by your
driving and the acceleration of the vehicle.
• Make sure that ESP remains enabled. With the ESP disabled,
the vehicle could brake away, particularly on a slick and slippery
road -risk of skidding!
• Once acceleration is finished, switch ASR on again by briefly
pushing the ESP button . •

Back-up program
In the event of a system malfunction, there is an back-up
program.
In the event of system malfunction, the automatic transmission
switches to th e fail -safe mode . All o f the selec tor lever pos ition
displays for the automatic transmission are highlighted with a light
background in the instrument clust er display. In some cases you
cannot drive in the reverse gear any more .
If the transmission swi tches to fail-safe mode, you should take the
vehicle to an authorized Audi dealership as soon as possible to have
the condition corrected .•

Emergency release for selector lever version
A
If the vehicle's power supply fails , the selector lever can
be released in an emergency.

The emergency release mechanism is located on the right
front under the selector lever shift gate. The release proce­
dure requires professional dexter ity. We recommend that
you seek assistance.
Removing the selector lever boot
- Engage the parking brake.

[ i] Tips
• Do not tow a trailer during the break-in period of your vehicle.
• If you tow a trailer, your Audi may require more frequent mainte ­
nance due to the extra load=> page 299 . •
Parking on a slope
-----------------
Do not park with a trailer on a slope. If it cannot be
avoided, do so only after doing the following:
When parking:
-Apply the foot brake.
- Have someone place chocks under both the vehicle and the trailer wheels .
- With chocks in place, slowly release the brakes until
wheel blocks absorb the load.
- Turn the wheels towards the curb.
- Apply the parking brake.
- Place an automatic transmission in
P, respectively a
manual transmission in first or reverse gear.
When restarting after parking:
- Start the engine.
- Shift transmission into gear.
- Release the parking brake and slowly pull out and away from the wheel blocks.
- Stop and have someone retrieve the wheel blocks.

If you move the selector lever of the automatic transmission to P
before applying the parking brake and before blocking the wheels,
you may have to use more force later to move the lever out of the
P
position .•

Closing the engine hood
- Pull the hood down until the pressure from the strut is
reduced.
- Let the hood
drop down and latch in place. Do not try to
push it shut;
it may fail to engage~& .
& WARNING
A hood that is not completely latched could fly up and block your
view while driving.
• When you close the engine hood, check it to make sure the
safety catch has properly engaged. The hood should be flush with
the surrounding vehicle body parts.
• If you notice while driving that the hood is not secured prop­
erly, stop at once and close it. •
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the engine
compartment!
Whenever you must perform any work in the engine compartment,
for example checking and filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury always
observe the following WARNINGS. The engine compartment of any
vehicle is a hazardous area!

To help avoid injury, before you check anything under the hood :
• Turn off the engine.
• Remove the ignition key.
• Set the parking brake fully .

• Move selector lever of automatic transmission to "P" {Park);
put manual transmission in Neutral.
• Always let the engine cool down. Hot components will burn
skin on contact.
• To reduce the risk of being burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood .
• Keep children away from the engine compartment.
• Never spill fluids on hot engine components. They can cause a
fire.
• Never touch the radiator fan. The auxiliary electric fan is
temperature controlled and can switch on suddenly.
• Never open the coolant reservoir cap when the engine is still
warm. The coolant system is pressurized and hot coolant could
spray out!
• Protect your face, hands and arm from steam or hot engine
coolant by placing a thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir.
• If work on the fuel system or the electrical system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery .
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open flames. Fluids in
the engine compartment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher immediately available.
• To avoid electrical shock and personal injury while the engine
is running or being started, never touch :
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage electronic ignition
system.
