Clear vision
• Frequent use of the coming home/leaving home function for
approaching and departing a vehicle parked in the dark will strain the
battery. This applies particularly if only short distances are drive n
between stops. Occasionally drive longer distances to make sure the
battery is recharged sufficiently .•

be adjusted to appear brighter or dimmer.

With the lights switched on, the brightness of instrument cluster (i.e.
needles, gauges and displays) and center console illumination can be
adjusted.

Th e instrument cluster and center console illumination (gauges and
needles) comes on when you sw itch on the ignition and the

Be aware of the following difference between
models built to US or Canadian specifications:
• USA models : illumination of the instrument cluster (gauges and
needles), dash and center console around the gearshift lever is
controlled
by a light sensor located in the instrument panel. The _,,,

Forward dome light off
-Move the switch to position 0. The light will not go on
regardless o f door positio n.
Glove compartment light
Open the glove compartment - the light in t he glove
compartme nt automatically illum inates as long as the
side marker lights or headlights a re on. When you close
the glove compartme nt, the light goes o ff.
With the interior light sw itch at the doo r contact (center) position,
t he forward dome light illum ina tes wheneve r you unlo ck the vehi cle
or open a door . The dome light goes out after approx imately 30
se conds after yo u have closed the door. L ikewise , whe n yo u lock your
vehicle or switc h on the ignition, the dome light goes out.
If yo u leave a door open , the dome light w ill go out after ten minutes
to conserve battery charge .
A dimmer automatically controls the br ightness of the lights when
t hey are swi tched on. •

Door contact activation
- Move the switch to th e center pos ition. The forward dome
light is turned on/off by the co ntac t swi tches o n any of the
doors.
Forward dome light on
- Move the switc h to position I. The fo rward dome light
goes on and stays on regardl ess of door pos it ion.
Forward dome light off
- Move the switc h to position 0. The light will not go on
regard less of door position .

Glove compartment light

When the side marker lights or headlights are switched on, the center
conso le is illum inated from the ambient light located above the wind­
shield .

Luggage compartment light
A dome light in the rear roof liner illuminates the luggage
compartment. An additional light is provided on the
inside of the rear lid .
The light is located on the left side of the trunk .
With the switch at the center position, the rear dome light is auto­ matically switched on as soon as the rear lid is opened. The rear dome
light goes out 30 seconds after the rear lid is closed .
If the rear lid is left open for more than 10 minutes, both the rear
dome light and the light in rear lid are switched off to conserve the
battery charge. •

Clear vision
The sun visors for the driver and front passenger can be removed
from their center mountings and moved toward the door windows
(D
=> fig. 59 to protect against side glare .
The vanity mirror in the sun visors is covered by a lid. When you slide
the lid @open the mirror illumination comes on automatically.
When you slide the lid shut or fold the sun visor back up, the illumi­
nation also goes out.
There is a folding visor between the visors for the driver and the passenger which can be used to cover the space above the rear view
mirror .•

- Move the small lever (located on the bottom edge of the
mirror) to the front.

Coat hooks
Some of the storage locations are only fo und o n specific vehicle
mode ls o r are op tio nal equ ipme nt.
& WARNING
• Always remove objects from the instrument panel. Any items
not put away could slide around inside the vehicle while dri ving or
when accelerating or when applying the brakes or when dri ving
around a corner.
• When you are driv ing make sure that anything you may have
placed in the center console or other stor age locations cannot fall
out into the footwells. In c ase of sudden braking you would not be
able to b rake, depres s the clutch or accelerate .
• Any pieces of clothing that you have hung up must not inter­
fere with the driver's view. The co at hooks are designed onl y for
lightweight clothing . Never hang any clothing with hard, pointed
or hea vy objects in the pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden
braking or in an accident· especially if the airbag is deployed ·
the se objects could injure any passengers inside the vehicle. •

The engine can be started or turned off with the ignition
key.

In position => fig. 107 @ both the ignition and engine are off, and
the stee ring is locked .
To
lock the stee ring after you have removed the ig nit io n key, turn the
steeri ng wheel in either direction until yo u hear it lock into place . You
should always lock the steering whenever you leave your vehicle . This
makes a vehicle theft even more difficult=> & .
Ignition on (D
If it is d ifficul t to turn the key af ter yo u have inse rted it in to the igni­
tion lock, tur n the steering wheel back and forth . T hi s w ill take the
load off the steering lock mechanism and you wi ll be able to t urn the
key freely and start the engine . On vehicles with a d iese l engine *, t he
system ca n preheat in this position .
Starting the engine@
In this pos it ion the engi ne s tarts. While the e ngine is s ta rting, the
power supply to the headlights and other electrical consume rs is temporarily interrupted to conserve ba
ttery power . Afte r th e eng ine

Before the starter can be operated again the key must be t urned back
to positio n (D . T he
non-repeat lock prevents you from damaging the
s ta rt er when t he e ng ine is running .
& WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ignition lock while the vehicle
i s moving . The steering wheel will lock causing loss of control.
• If you have to leave your v ehicle -even for ju st a minute -
always remove the ignition key and take it with you. This is espe·
cially important if you are going to leave children behind in the
vehicle. The children could start the engine or use other vehicle
control s. Unsupervised use of vehicle controls (for example, power
windows ) can cause serious personal injuries .

Ignition key safety lock
Th e ignition k ey can only b e removed when the selector
lever is in the "P" (Park) position.
Pla ce the selector lever i n the "P " pos it ion before swit ching off the
eng ine .
Afte r sw itching of f the igni tion , th e ignition key can o nly be re moved
from the ignition lock when t he selector lever is in the "P" (Park) posi­
t ion. After yo u have remove d the key, t he selector lever is locked a nd
cannot be moved .•

-Transmission •m ___________________ _
- Remove the screwdriver from the vehicle tool kit. Use the
flat side of the reversible screwdriver blade=:>
page 2 70.
- Carefully pry the cover out with the screwdriver and pull it
=:>
page 121, fig. 120 toward the shifter knob in the direc­
tion of the arrow. The screwdriver must grip at the lower
edge of the cover to loosen it.
Emergency release for selector Lever
- Press the yellow release lever in the direction of the arrow
=:>
page 121, fig. 121 and hold it in that position.
- Press the release button in the selector lever@ and move
the lever into the N position .
- Clip the shift boot back into the shift gate.
If the vehicle has to be pushed or towed if the power supply fails (e.g.
battery is discharged), the selector lever must be moved to the N
position using the emergency locking device.
& WARNING
The selector must only be shifted from the P position if the hand­
brake is firmly applied. Otherwise the vehicle would start moving
unexpectedly on a grade when the selector lever is shifted from
the P position -increasing the risk of an accident. •

Driving with your quattro®
With All Wheel Drive, all four wheels are driven.
General information
With All Wheel Drive, power is distributed to all fo ur whee ls. This
happens automatically depending on you r driving s tyle a nd the road
conditions at the time. See also =>
page 189, "Electronic differential
lo ck (E DL)".
W inter tires
W hen d riving in the winter, your vehicle with A ll Whee l Drive has an
advantage, even with reg ular t ires . In winter road cond it ions it may
be advisab le to mou nt w inte r ti res (or all-se aso n t ires) for imp roved
dr iveability and braking: these tires must be mounted on
all four
wheel s.

Snow chains
W he re snow c ha ins are mand atory on certain roads, this norm ally

Replacing wheels/tires
Veh icles with All Wheel Drive m ust always have t ires of the same s ize.
Also avoid tires with different tread depths. For details see page

Off-Road driving?
Your Audi does not have enough ground clearance to be used as a n
off-road vehicle. It is therefore best to avoid rough tracks and uneven
te rrain as much as poss ib le. Also refe r to=>
page 199.
& WARNING
Always adjust your driving to road and traffic conditions . Do not
let the extra safety afforded by the all-wheel drive tempt you into
taking extra risk s.
• Although the quattro ®all -wheel drive is very effective, always
remember that braking capacity is limited by t ire traction. You
should therefore not drive at exce ssive speed s on icy or slippery
road surfaces .
• On wet road surfa ces, be careful not to drive too fast becau se
the front wheels could begin to slide on top of the water (hydro­
planing ). If this should occur, you will have no warning from a
sudden increase in engine speed as with a front -wheel drive
vehicle. Always dr ive at speed s which are adjusted to the road
conditions -risk of crash! •
Energy management
Starting ability is optimized
Energy managemen t controls the distribution of elec ­
trical energy and thus optimizes the availability of elec­
t r ical ene rgy for s tarting the en gin e.
If a vehicle w ith a convent ional energy sys tem is not d riven fo r a long
period of time, t he battery is discha rged by idling cur rent consumers
(e .g. immob ilizer). In ce rtain c ircumstances it can result i n there
being insufficient energy availab le to start the engine .
Inte lligent ene rgy m anageme nt in yo ur vehicle h andles the dis tribu­
tion of electrical energy. Starting ability is markedly improved and
t he life of the bat tery is ex tende d.

Battery diagnosis
Battery diagnosis continuously determines the state of the battery.
Sensors determine battery voltage, battery current and battery
temperature. This determines the current state of charge and the
power of the battery .
Idling current management
Idling current management reduces energy consumption while the
vehicle is standing. With the ignition switched off, it controls the
energy supply to the various electrical components. Data from
battery diagnosis is considered.
Depending on the battery's state of charge , individual consumers are
gradually turned off to prevent excessive discharge of the battery and
thus maintain starting capability.
Dynamic energy management
While the vehicle is being driven, dynamic energy management
distributes the energy generated according to the needs of the indi­
v idual components. It regulates consumption, so that more electrical
energy is not being used than is being generated and ensures an
optimal state of charge for the battery.

• But even energy management cannot negate the limits of physics.
Consider that the power and life of a battery are limited.
• If starting ability is threatened, you are informed by a warning

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining starting capa­
bility.
The battery is severely taxed in short-distance driving, in city traffic
and during the cold time of year. Abundant electrical energy is

required, but only a little is generated. It is also critical if the engine
is
not running and electrical components are turned on. In this
instance energy is being consumed but none is being generated .
It is in precisely these situations that you will notice energy manage­
ment actively regulating the distribution of energy.
Vehicle stands for an extended period
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of several days or weeks,
electrical components are gradually cut back or switched off. This
reduces energy consumption and maintains starting capability over a
longer period.
Take into consideration that when you unlock your vehicle, some
convenience functions, such as the remote key or power seat adjust ­
ment, may not be available. The convenience functions will be avail­
able again when you turn on the ignition and start the engine .
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with the engine turned off, the
battery is being discharged.
If starting capability is jeopardized due to energy consumption, a
message appears in the driver information display.
You have to start the engine to charge the battery.
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated when the vehicle is being
driven, the battery can become discharged. This happens mostly
when little energy is being generated and a great deal consumed and
the battery's state of charge is not optimal.
To bring the energy balance back into equilibrium, consumers which
require especially large amounts of energy are temporarily cut back
or switched off. Heating systems in particular require a great deal of
energy . If you notice, for example , that the heated seats* or the
heated rear window are not heating, they have been temporarily cut
back or switched off. These systems will be available again as soon as
the energy balance has been restored. .,

Driver notification in the instrument
cluster display
If bat tery powe r drops in to the r an ge where i t can li mit the ability of
the engine to start, this is shown in t he instr ument cluster display
w ith the follow ing dr iver me ssage:
-Low battery charge : battery will be charged while driving
T his notification rem inds yo u that the startin g capab ility of t he
eng ine m ay be limi te d . As soo n as you st art driv in g ag ain, the batte ry
w ill be recharged and t he notification will go out .
Driver notification appears and goes out again
If this dr iver notification appears after the ignition is turned on or
w hile driving a nd it goes ou t ag ain afte r a whil e, the b attery has been
adeq uate ly recharged.
Driver notification appears and does not go out
again
If t his dr ive r not ifica tion appears after the ign ition is turned o n or
w hile driving and does not go out again, the battery 's state o f charge
is not in the o ptim al ra nge . Sta rt in g abili ty is rest ric ted . H ave the
battery checked as soon as poss ible by an authorized A udi dealer or
