You can centra lly lock and u nlock your vehicle and start the eng ine

The valet key f its only the driver's door and the ignition lock. I f yo u

Key replacement
If you lose a key, contact your authorized Aud i dealer immediately to

Registered keys
You can check to find out how many remote keys have been regis tered
to your vehicle. Therefore, when buying a used veh icle, make sure to
get all of the remote keys th at belo ng t o it.

If on e key h as been lost, con tact an a uthor ized A udi d eale rship to
hav e the func tion locked for this key . Also inform yo ur insurance
compa ny that t his key is lost .
& WARNING
• Do not leave your vehicle unattended with the key in the igni­
tion lock. Entry by unauthorized persons could endanger you or
result in theft or damage the vehicle. Alway s lock all doors and
take the key.
• Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, especially with
access to vehicle keys. Unguarded access to the keys provides chil­
dren the opportunity to start the engine and/or a ctivate vehicle
systems such as the power windows. Unsupervised operation of
any vehicle system by children can result in se rious injury . ._

All the doors and the rear lid are locked by the central locking system
when you lock the vehicle.
The unlock ing and locking mode* can be changed in the driver infor­
mation system~
page 22.
Unlocking the vehicle
You can unlock the vehicle from outside either by using the remote
control
or by inserting and turning the key in the driver's door lock .
When you
unlock your vehicle:
• Th e anti-theft alarm system is deactivated briefly.
• The vehicle interior lights illuminate for approximately 30
seconds .
• All turn signa l lights will flash twice when the car is unlocked .
• After unlocking the vehicle, you have 30 seconds to open a door or
the rear lid. Afte r 30 seconds, the vehicle automatica lly locks and the
anti-theft alarm system activates again.
The rear lid can be locked or unlocked either by using the remote
control or by inserting and turning the key in the dr iver's door lock.
Unlocking the vehicle with the remote control~ will only
unlock the
rear lid, to
open it, the lid handle needs to be pressed.
Locking the vehicle
You can lock the vehicle from outside either by using the remote
control
or by inserting and turning the key in the drivers's door lock.
When you
lock the vehicle:
• All doors and the rear lid are locked.
• All turn signal lights will flash once when the car is locked.
• Th e anti-theft alarm system is activated. The horn of the anti­
theft alarm system will sound and the anti-theft alarm system readi­
ness light, located in the center of the instrument panel below the
windshield on the right side of the air vent, will start to blink.
• Th e vehicle interior lights turn off.

The automatic locking feature locks all the vehicle doors and the rear
lid when you drive faster than 9 mph (15 km/h).
You can unlock the vehicle from the inside by:
• removing the key from the ignition switch (the vehicle wi ll auto­
matically unlock itself) or
• pressing the unlock part of the power lock switch
ll::D or
• pulling the inside handle for that door (once - the front door is
unlocked and opened at the same time, twice to open the rear door).
If you wish, you can have an authorized Audi dealer convert your
power door lock system to automatic locking.
& WARNING
• When you lock your vehicle from outside, nobody· especially
children - should remain inside the vehicle. Remember, when you
lock the vehicle from the outside the windows cannot be opened
from the inside .
• When you leave the vehicle, always remove the ignition key
and take it with you. This will prevent passengers (children, for
example) from accidentally being locked in the vehicle should
they accidentally press the power locking switch on the center
console.
• Do not leave children inside the vehicle unsupervised. In an
emergency it would be impossible to open the doors from the
outside without the key.
[ i ] Tips
• In the event of a crash with airbag deployment all locked doors
will be automatically unlocked to give access to the vehicle occupants
from the outside .
• If the power locking system sho uld fail, you can still open the fuel
tank flap in an emergency~

Opening and closing
Closing the rear lid
-Pull it down and shut it firmly => & . T here is a recess in
the interior trim o f the lid to make it easier to pull down.
& WARNING
• After closing the rea r lid , always pull up on it to make sure that
it is properly closed. Otherwise it could open suddenly when the
vehicle is moving .
• To help p re v ent poisonous exhaust ga s from being drawn into
the vehicle, always keep the rear lid closed while d riv ing. Never
transport objects larger than those fitting completely into the
luggage area, becau se then the rear l id cannot be fully closed.
• Never lea ve your vehicle unattended e specially with the re ar lid
left open . A child could crawl into th e car throu gh the luggage
compa rtment and pull the lid shut , bec oming trapped and un able
to get out . To reduc e the r isk of per sonal injury, never let children
play in or around your vehicle. Always keep the rear lid , as well as
the vehicle doors , clo sed when not in us e.
(I) Tips
• If the rea r lid is op en or not p roper ly locked when the ign ition is
turned on, the door and rear lid warning appears in the instrument
cl uster dis play.
• If the rear lid on a locked vehicle is unlocked with the middle
button
cs on the remote key, the rear lid is automat ically locked
again immediately after clos ing . This is indicated by the turn signa ls
blinking. •
Emergency release for rear lid
If the rear lid can not be opened, an emergency release is
p rovided.

The em ergency re lease is located on the inside of the rear lid .
To re lease the rear lid, proceed as follows:
- Fold dow n the righ t rear se atba ck
=> fig . 35.
- Take you r igni tion key and move through the ope nin g u ntil
your head a nd shou lders are i n the tru nk.
- Now insert the key bit into the slot in the cover as shown
in => fig. 36
(D and pry the cover up caref ully . ..,.

-Place the key in the round opening behind the cover@
and turn the key in the direct ion of the arrow . This unlocks
the lock and the rear lid opens a crack.
- Open the rear lid from the outside and put the ignition key
in a safe place. •
Manual door locking
If the power locking system fails (power failure), you will
need to lock the passenger door separately.

An emergency door locking device is integrated in the rear
edge of the doors (only visible when the door is open) for
those doors without a lock cylinder .
- Open the door.
- Remove the plastic cap using the veh icle key~ fig. 37 .
- Stick the key into the internal slot and turn the key about
90 degrees as far as it can go to the righ t (right-side doors)
or to the left (left-side doors).
- Replace the plastic cap.

Opening and closing
After you close the door, you will no longer be able to open it from the
outs ide.
You can open it from the inside, however, by pulling on the door latch,
once for the front doors and twice for the rear doors.•
Child safety lock
The child safety lock prevents the rear doors from being
opened from the inside.

The rear doors are equipped with a child safety lock. It is
operated with the vehicle key . The child safety lock is only
visible when the door is op en .
- To
switch on the child safety lock, turn the ignition key in
the direction of the arrow.
- To
switch off the child safety lock, turn the ignition key in
the opposite direction of the arrow.
The child safety lock prevents the doors from being opened from the
inside when you have small children sitting in the rear. •

Open ing and closing
- By briefly pressing/pulling the switch again, the down ­
ward travel of the window can be stopped in any position
:::::, & in "Controls" .
Closing the windows
Pull the switch up to the first stop and hold it there until
the window has risen to the desired position.
- Pull the switch quickly to the
sec ond po sit ion : the window
will automatically close all the way:::::,

- By briefly pressing/pulling the switch again, the upward travel of the window can be stopped in any position=:>

Activating/deactivating re ar windows
- Push the switch to the depressed position to acti vate the
rear windows -the light in the switch will go out .
- Briefly press the switch to
deacti vate the rear windows -
the switch will return to the safety position and the light
~ will illuminate.
The safety switch ©::::> page 49, fig. 40 in the armrest on the driver's
door turns off the rear power windows. Only when the safety switch
is depressed can the rear windows be opened or closed . The symbol in
the safety switch illuminates when the power windows in the rear
doors are switched off (button NOT dep ressed) . This featu re has been
prov ided for the safety of small children rid ing in the rear of the
vehicle.
[ i ] Tips
T he windows can still be opened and closed for about ten min utes
after the ign ition has been turned off. The power windows are not
shut off unti l one of the front doors is opened .•
Convenience close/open feature
You can close or open the windows from outside when you
lock or unlock your car with the key.

Keep the key in the lock on the driver's door @until all
windows and the panorama sliding/tilt roof * have reached
the desired position.
Convenience close feature
- Hold the key in the lock of the driver's door in the closed
position until all windows and the panorama sliding/t ilt
roof* are closed :::::,

The automatic close function will cease immed iatel y if the key is
re leased. For safety reasons it is not possib le to open and close the
sunroof with the remote-control key.

Ignition Lock and ignition switch
Ignition lock
The engine can be started or turned off with the ignition
key.

In position => fig. 107 @ both the ignition and engine are off, and
the stee ring is locked .
To
lock the stee ring after you have removed the ig nit io n key, turn the
steeri ng wheel in either direction until yo u hear it lock into place . You
should always lock the steering whenever you leave your vehicle . This
makes a vehicle theft even more difficult=> & .
Ignition on (D
If it is d ifficul t to turn the key af ter yo u have inse rted it in to the igni­
tion lock, tur n the steering wheel back and forth . T hi s w ill take the
load off the steering lock mechanism and you wi ll be able to t urn the
key freely and start the engine . On vehicles with a d iese l engine *, t he
system ca n preheat in this position .
Starting the engine@
In this pos it ion the engi ne s tarts. While the e ngine is s ta rting, the
power supply to the headlights and other electrical consume rs is temporarily interrupted to conserve ba
ttery power . Afte r th e eng ine
h as st arted, relea se the key and it w ill retur n to posit io n (D .
Before the starter can be operated again the key must be t urned back
to positio n (D . T he
non-repeat lock prevents you from damaging the
s ta rt er when t he e ng ine is running .
& WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ignition lock while the vehicle
i s moving . The steering wheel will lock causing loss of control.
• If you have to leave your v ehicle -even for ju st a minute -
always remove the ignition key and take it with you. This is espe·
cially important if you are going to leave children behind in the
vehicle. The children could start the engine or use other vehicle
control s. Unsupervised use of vehicle controls (for example, power
windows ) can cause serious personal injuries .

Ignition key safety lock
Th e ignition k ey can only b e removed when the selector
lever is in the "P" (Park) position.
Pla ce the selector lever i n the "P " pos it ion before swit ching off the
eng ine .
Afte r sw itching of f the igni tion , th e ignition key can o nly be re moved
from the ignition lock when t he selector lever is in the "P" (Park) posi­
t ion. After yo u have remove d the key, t he selector lever is locked a nd
cannot be moved .•

• Never allow anyone - e speciall y small children - to remain in
the vehicle when it is locked . Locked doors make it more d ifficult
for rescuers to acces s the passenger compa rtment in the e vent of
an emergency. Danger to life!
• Never leave children unsupervi sed in the vehicle . Children
could release the parking brake or mo ve the gearshift leve r out of
gear . The vehicle could start to roll away and cause an accident.
• No matter what the season is, the temperature in a park ed
vehicle can reach dangerous levels. •

Starting on hills
H ill hold assist makes it easier to s tart on hill s.
T he system is activated whe n the brake peda l is depressed for a few
s econd s.
After releasing the b rake pedal, the bra ke power is held fo r a
brief
moment to prevent the vehicle from rolling back when star ting. At
t his time , you can eas ily begin to move your veh icle .
& WARNING
• If you did not beg in moving immediately after releasing the
brake pedal , under certain circumstances , the vehicle would begin
to roll backward. Depre ss the brake pedal immediately or engage
the hand brake.
• Should the engine st all , depress the brake pedal immed iately
or engage the hand brake.
• In order to prevent the veh icle from rolling back unintention ­
ally when starting in stop-and-go traffi c, keep the brake pedal
depressed for a few seconds before d riving off.

You can find out if your vehicle is equipped with "H ill hold as sist " at
an authorized Audi dea lersh ip. •
Cruise control
Switch ing the sy stem on
The crui se c ontrol system m akes it possible to drive a t a
constant s peed start ing a t 20 mph (3 0 km/h).

• Never tran sport object s larger than those fitting completely
into the luggage are a because the rear lid cannot be fully clos ed.
• If you absolutely must dri ve with the rear lid open , observe the
following note s to reduce the risk of po isoning:
- Clo se all windows,
- Close the power roof*,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument panel,
- Switch off the air recirculation ,
- Set the fresh air fan to the h ighest speed.
& WARNING
Always make sure that the doors , all windows, the power roof*
and the read lid are securely closed and lo cked to redu ce the ri sk
of inju ry when the vehicle is not being used.
• After closing the r ear lid, always make sure that it is properly
closed and locked.
• Never leave your vehicle unattended especially with the rear lid
left open. A child could crawl into the vehicle through the luggage
compartment and close the rear lid becoming trapped and unable
to get out. Being trapped in a vehicle can lead to serious personal
injury.
• Never let children play in or around the vehicle.
• Never let passengers ride in the luggage compartment . Vehicl e
occupants must alway s be properly restrained in one of the
vehicle 's seating positions.

• The tire pressu re mus t cor respond to the load - see the tire pres­
sure st icker on th e fuel filler doo r. •
The tire pressure must correspo nd to the load . The tire p ressure is
shown on t he tire press ure label. O n USA ve hicl es, t he tire press ure
label is located on the d river's s ide B-pillar. On Canada vehicles, the
tire press ure label is located either on the driver 's side B -pillar or
inside the fuel fille r flap . The t ire pressure labe l lists the recom­
mended co ld ti re inflation pressures for t he ve hicle at its maximum
c apacity weight and the tires that were on yo ur vehicle at the ti me it
was manufactured. For recommended tire pressures for normal load
c ondi tions, p le ase see cha pte r=>
page 249. •
Tie-downs
The lugg ag e co mportment is equipped with four tie­
downs to secure lugga ge and other items.
Use the t ie-downs to sec ure your ca rgo prope rly=> page 131,
"Loading the luggage compartment" .
In a co lli sion, t he laws of phys ics mean tha t even sma ller i tems th at
are loose in the vehicle will become heavy m issi les t hat can cause
ser ious injury. Items in the vehicle pos sess energy whi ch v ary wi th
vehicle speed and t he weight of the item. Vehicle speed is the most
significant factor .
For exampl e, in a fron tal col lis io n at a speed of 30 mp h (4 8 k m/h),
the forces actin g on a 10 -lb (4.S kg) o bject are about 20 times t he
normal weight o f the item. This means that the weig ht of the item
wou ld suddenly be abo ut 200 lbs. (90 kg) . You can imagine the inju­
r ies tha t a 200 lbs. (90 kg) i tem flying freely thro ugh t he p assenge r
compartment could cause in a collision like this.
& WARNING
Weak , damaged or improper straps used to secure items to t ie­
downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
ser ious personal injury.

- Insert t he tongue into the correct buck le of your seat until
you hear it latch secure ly==> fig. 131 .
- Pull on the be lt to make sure tha t it is secure ly la tched in
the buck le.
Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety be lt is equipped with an automatic be lt retractor on the
shoulder be lt. This feat ure locks the be lt whe n the belt is pulled out
fast, during hard braking and in an acc ident. The belt may also lock
w hen you dr ive up or dow n a steep hill or throug h a sharp curve.
Dur ing normal driv ing the belt lets you move freely.
Safety belt pretensioners
The safety belts are equipped w ith a belt pretensioner that helps to
t ighten the safety be lt and remove sla ck when the p re tensioner is
act ivated. The function of the pretensioner is monitored by a warn ing
light =>
page 15.
Switchable locking feature
Every sa fety be lt ex ce pt t he one on the driver sea t is eq uipped wi th a
switchab le locking feature that
must be used when the safety belt is
used to at tach a child safety seat. Be s ure to read t he importa nt info r­
mation about this feature=>
page 177.
& WARNING
Imp roperly positioned safety belts can c au se se rious injury in a n
accident =>
page 140, "Safety b elt po sition ".
• Safety belts offer optimum protection only when the seatback
i s upr ight and belts are properly positioned on the body .
• Always make sure th at the rear seat backre st to which the
center rear safety belt is attached i s secur ely latched when ever the
rear cente r sa fety belt is be ing u sed . If the ba ckre st is not securely
latched, the pas senger will move forward with th e backre st during
sudde n braking, in a sudden maneuve r and especiall y in a crash .
& WARNING (continued )
• Never attach the safety belt to the buckle fo r another seat .
Attaching the belt to the wrong buckle will reduce safety belt
effectiveness and can cause ser ious personal injury.
• A pass enger who i s not properly restrained can be seriou sly
i njured by the safety belt itself when it mo ves from the stronger
part s of the body into critical area s like the abdomen.
• Alway s loc k the convertible locking retractor when you a re
securing a child safety seat in the vehicle=>

Safety belt position
Correct belt position is the key to getting maximum
pro tection from safety belts .
