General information
Important information

ings that you should read and follow for
your own safety and the safety of your pas­ sengers.
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system con
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats ore correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger. Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quickly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
- your body is properly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety belts and airbag system can offer
maximum protection

In the following sections, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust your seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for insta lling a child seat on the front pas­
senger's seat. Always follow the information regarding child safety provided in
r::!> page 170, Child Safety .
& WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the dr iver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal in jury.
- Always keep your feet on the f loor when
the vehicle is in motion - never p ut your
feet on top of the instrumen t panel, out of the window or on top of the seat c
ush­
ion. This applies espec ially to the passen­
gers. If your seating position is incorrect,
you increase the risk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an accident .
If the
airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect, this could result in pe rsonal
inj ury or even death.
- It is important for both the drive r and
front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches ( 25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in ­
strument panel. If you're sitting any
closer than this, the airbag system can­ not protect you properly. In addition, the
front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that they
can give you max imum protect ion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the steer­
ing wheel o r instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpectedly, caus­
ing sudden loss of veh icle cont ro l and
pe rsonal injury. If you adjust yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, yo u are ou t
of posit ion .
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the dr iver's
seat in the fo llow ing manne r:
.. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so
that you can easily push the peda ls to the
floor wh ile keeping your knees sl ightly bent

.. Ad just the bac krest so tha t when you sit
w ith your back against the backrest, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.. For adjustab le head restraints: adjust the

A WARNING
Never place any objects in the driver's foot­
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal function. I n
case of sudden braking or an accident, you
would not be ab le to brake or acce lerate.
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into
the rearmost position.
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three -point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following manner :
• Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright
pos ition.
D o not ride w ith the seat reclined.
• For adjustable head restraints : adjust the
head restraint so the upper edge is as even
as possib le with the top of your head. If that
is not possible, try to adjust the head re­
straint so that it is as close to this position
as possible

• Place your feet on the floor in front of the
passenger's seat .

- To reduce the risk of injury dur ing sudden
braking or in a co llision, the driver and
front passenger shou ld not have their
backrests in the reclined position while ..,.

bag system can prov ide the greatest pro­
tection possible when the backrests are
in the upright posit ion a nd the safety
belts are worn correct ly. The more a
backrest is reclined, the greater the risk
of injury due to an incorre ct seating posi­

A WARNING
- Only adjust the front seat w ith when t he

- The power adjustment for the front seats
also works with the ignition switched off
or with the ignition key removed. For this
reason, c hildren should never be left un­
attended in t he veh icle -they could be in­
jured! -
Exerc ise caution when adjusting the seat
he ight. Unsupervised or careless seat ad­
justment can pinch fingers or hands
causing injuries .
- W hile the vehicle is mov ing, the seat
backs of the front seats must not be in­
clined too far to the rear because the ef ­
fectiveness of the safety be lts and the
airbag sys tem is seve rely comp romised -
there is a risk of injury.
- To r educe the risk of injury dur ing s udden
b ra ki ng or in a co llision, the drive r and
front p assenge r sh ould not have the ir
backrests in the recline d posi tion while
driving or r iding. The safety be lts and a ir ­
bag system can provide the greatest pro­
tect ion possible when the backrests are
in the upr ight position and the safety
be lts are worn correctly. The more a
backrest is reclined, the greater the r isk
of injury due to an inco rrect seating posi­
tion and saf ety belt pos it ion.
Front center armrest
Applies to vehicles: wit h front center armrest
The cen ter armrest can be adjusted to several
levels .

is folded down. Because of this, the armrest
should not be folded down during city driving.
The arm rest can slide forward and back.
There is a storage compartment under the
arm rest.

Applies to vehicles with super sport seats* (no
illustration): The head restraints are integrat­
ed in the backrest and cannot be adjusted.
Adjust the head restraints so the upper edge
is as even as possib le with the top of your
head. If that is not possible, try to adjust as
close to this position as possible. Push the head restraint as close as possible to the back
of the head.

You should not use the rec irculation mode
for an extended per iod since no fresh air is
drawn in . With the ai r-conditioning switch­
ed off, the windows can fog up, which in­
c reases t he risk of an ac cident.

tips, instructions and warnings that you need
to read and observe for your own safety, the
safety of your passengers and others . We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, airbags, ch ild restraints as
well as child safety. Your safety is fo r us
priori­
ty number 1.
Always observe the information
and warnings in this sect ion - for yo ur own
safety as well as that of your passengers.
The information in this section app lies to all
model ve rsions of your vehicle . Some of the
feat ures described in this sections may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others. If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Audi dea ler.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that you follow the in­
struct ions and heed the WARNINGS in
this Manual. It is in your interest and in
the interest of your passengers.
- Always keep the complete Owner's Liter­
ature in your Audi when you lend or sell
your vehicle so that this important infor­
mation will always be ava ilable to the
dr iver and passengers.
- Always keep the Owner's literature handy
so that you can find it eas ily if you have
questions.
- Always adjust your speed to the weather
traffic and conditions. Follow the speed
limits.
- Always drive in such a way that you can
stop your vehicle safely .

Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
reduce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.
Your safety and the safety of your passengers
should not be left to chance . Advances in
techno logy have made a variety of features
available to help reduce the risk of injury in an
acc ident. The following is a list of just a few of
the safety features in yo ur Audi :
- sophisticated safety be lts fo r driver and all
passenger seating posit ions,
- safety belt pretens ioners,
- safety belt force lim iters for the front seats,
- safety belt he ight adjustment systems for
the front seats,
- front airbags,
- knee airbags for the front seats*
- side airbags in the front seats and outer rear seats *,
- side curtain ai rbags with ejec tion mitiga tion
features,
- specia l LATCH an chorages for child re-
straints,
- head restra ints for each seating posit ion,

gether as a system to help protect you and

Correctly adjusted head restraints are an im­
portant part of your vehicle's occupant re­
st raint system and can help to reduce the risk
of injuries in acciden t situations.

All seats are equipped with head re­
straints. Dr iving without head restra ints or
w ith head restra ints that are not proper ly
adjusted increases the risk of ser ious or fa­
tal neck injury dramat ically . To help reduce
the risk of inju ry:
- Always drive with the head restraints in
place and properly adjusted .
- Every person in the veh icle must have a
properly ad justed head restra int .

- Always make sure each person in the ve­
hicle properly ad justs their head re­
straint. Adjust the head restraint so the
upper edge is as even as possible with
the top of your head .
If that is not possi­
ble, t ry to ad just the head restraint so
that it is as close to this pos it ion as pos­
sible. Move t he head rest raint so that i t
is as close to the back of the head as pos­
sible.
- Never attempt to adjust head res traint
while driving . If you have driven off and
m ust adjust the driver headrest for any
reason, first stop the vehicle safely be­
fore attempting to adjust the head re­
straint .
- Ch ildren must a lways be properly re­
strained in a child restraint that is appro­
priate for their age and size¢
page 170.
Examples of improper seating positions
The occupan t restraint syst em can only re ­
duce the risk of injury if vehicle occupants are
properly seated .
Improper seating positions can cause serious
injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are properly positioned on the body . Improper sea ting positions reduce the
effectiveness of safety belts and will even in ­
crease the r isk of injury and death by mov ing
the safety be lt to crit ica l areas of the body.
Improper seating posi tions a lso increase the
risk of serio us inju ry and de ath when an a ir­
bag deploys and strikes an occupant who is
not in the proper seating position . A driver is
responsible for the safety of all veh icle occu ­
pants and espec ially for children. Therefore :

seating position when the vehicle is being

wearer's body.

Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety belt is equipped with an automat­
ic belt retractor on the shoulder belt . This fea­
ture locks the belt when the belt is pulled out
fast, during hard braking and in an accident.
The belt may also lock when you drive up or
down a steep hill or through a sharp curve. During normal driving the belt lets you move
freely.
Safety belt pretensioners
The safety belts are equipped with a belt pre­
tensioner that helps to tighten the safety belt
and remove slack when the pretensioner is ac­
tivated

tensioner is monitored by a warning light
c::> page 21.
Convertible locking retractor
Every safety belt except the one on the driver
seat is equipped with a convertible locking re­
tractor that
must be used when the safety
belt is used to attach a child seat. Be sure to
read the important information about this
feature

only when the seatback is upright and

belts are properly positioned on the
body.
- Always make sure that the rear seat
backrest to which the center rear safety
belt* is attached is securely latched
whenever the rear center safety belt is
being used. If the backrest is not secure­
ly latched, the passenger will move for­
ward with the backrest during sudden
braking, in a sudden maneuver and espe­
cially in a crash .
- Never attach the safety belt to the buck­
le for another seat. Attaching the belt to
the wrong buckle will reduce safety belt
effectiveness and can cause serious per­
sonal injury.
- A passenger who is not correctly restrain­
ed can be seriously injured by the safety
belt itself when it moves from the stron­
ger parts of the body into sensitive areas
like the abdomen.
- Always lock the convertible locking re­
tractor when you are securing a child seat in the vehicle

Important things to know
Importance of wearing safety belts and
sitting properly
Airbags are only supplemental restraints. For
airbags to do their job , occupants must al­
ways properly wear their safety belts and be
in a proper seating position.
F or your safety and the safety of your passen­
gers, before driving off, a lways:
• Adjust the driver's seat and steering wheel

In a collision, airbags must inflate within the
blink of an eye and with considerable force .
The supplementa l airbags can cause injuries if
the dr iver or the front seat passenger is not
seated properly . Therefore in order to he lp the
a ir bag to do its job, it is important, both as a
d river and as a passenge r to sit prope rly at all
times.
By keeping room between your body and the
steering wheel and the front of the passenge r
compartment, the airbag ca n inflate fully and
comp letely and provide supp lemental protec­
tion in ce rtain frontal collisions¢
page 126,

There is a lot that the driver and the passen­
gers can and must do to help the individua l
safety features installed in your A udi work to­
gether as a system.
P rope r seat ing pos ition is important so that
the front airbag on the drive r side can do its
job. If yo u have a physical impa irment or con- dition that prevents yo
u from sitting properly
o n the driver seat with the safety belt properly
fastened and reaching the pedals , or if you
have concerns with regard to the function or
operation of the Advanced Airbag System ,
please contact your author ized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop, o r call Audi Customer Re­
lations at 1-800-822-2834 fo r poss ible modi­
fica tions to your ve hicle.
When the airbag system deploys, a gas gener ­
ator will f il l the a irbags, break open t he pad­
ded cove rs, and inflate between the steering
whee l and the dr iver and between the instru­
ment pane l and the fron t passenger. The a ir­
bags will deflate immediately after dep loy­
ment so tha t the front occupants can see
t hr ough the windshie ld again witho ut inter­
ruption .
All of th is takes p lace in the b link o f an eye, so
fast that many peop le don't even realize tha t
the airbags have deployed. The airbags a lso
inflate with a great dea l of force and nothing
shou ld be in their w ay when they deploy.
Front a irbags in combination with properly
wor n safety belts slow down and lim it the oc ­
cupant's forward movement . T ogether they
help to prevent the drive r and front seat pas­
senger from hitting pa rts of the inside of t he
vehicle while reducing the forces acting on the
occupant dur ing the crash . In this way they
help to reduce the risk of injury to the head
and upper body in the crash. A irbags do not
protect the arms or the lower parts of the
body.
Both front airbags wi ll not inflate in all fronta l
collisions . The triggering of the airbag system
depends on the vehicle dece lerat ion rate
ca used by the co llision and registered by the
electron ic control unit. If th is rate is below
the reference value programmed into the con ­
t rol unit , the airbags will not be trigge red,
even though the car may be badly damaged as
a res ult of the co llision . Ve hicl e damage, re­
pair costs o r even the lack of ve hicle damage
is not necessari ly an indication of whe ther an
airbag shou ld inflate or not .

-Always install rear-facing child safety
seats on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat in exceptional circumstances and
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not come on and stay on, immediately
install the rear-facing child safety seat in
a rear seating position and have the air­
bag system inspected immediately by
your Audi dealer.
_& WARNING
- Forward-facing child safety seats instal­
led on the front passenger's seat may in­
terfere with the deployment of the air­
bag and cause serious injury to the child.
- If exceptional circumstances require the
use of a forward-facing child restraint on
the front passenger's seat, the child's
safety and well-being require the follow­ ing special precautions to be taken:
- Always make sure that the forward-fac­
ing seat has been designed and certi­
fied by its manufacturer for use on a
front passenger seat with a front and
side airbag.
- Always carefully follow the manufac­
turer's instructions provided with the
child seat or infant carrier.
- Never install a child restraint without a
properly attached top tether strap if
the child restraint manufacturer's in­
structions require the top tether strap
to be used.
- Never put the forward-facing child re­
straint up against or very near the in­
strument panel.
- Always set the safety belt upper an­
chorage to the adjustment position
that permits proper installation in ac ­
cordance with the child restraint manu­
facturer's instructions.
- Always move the passenger seat into its rearmost position in the seat's fore
and aft adjustment range, as far away
from the airbag as possible before in-

stalling the child restraint. The back­
rest must be adjusted to an upright po­
sition.
- Always make sure that nothing pre­
vents the front passenger's seat from
being moved to the rearmost position
in its fore and aft adjustment range.
- Never place objects on the seat (such
as a laptop, CO player, electronic games device, power inverter or seat
heater for child seats) . These may in­
fluence the electrical capacitance
measured by the capacitive passenger
detection system and can also fly
around in an accident and cause serious personal injury.
- Never place or use any electrical device
(such as a laptop, CO player, electronic
games device, power inverter or seat
heater for child seats) on the front pas­
senger seat if the device is connected
to the 12-volt socket or the cigarette lighter socket.
- If a seat heater has been retrofitted or
otherwise added to the front passen­ ger seat, never install any child re­
straint system on this seat.
- Make sure that there are no wet objects (such as a wet towel) and no water or
other liquids on the front passenger
seat cushion .
- Always make sure that the
PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF
light comes on and stays
on all the time whenever the ignition is
switched on.
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, immedi­
ately install the rearward-facing child
safety seat in a rear seating position
and have the airbag system inspected by your authorized Audi dealer.
- Always buckle the child seat firmly in
place even if a child is not sitting in it.
A loose child seat can fly around during
a sudden stop or in a collision.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS
whenever using a child restraint in ave-
hicle
