Gearshift lever

The clutch pedal must be depressed all the
way before you can start the engine.
T he manual transmission in your Audi is
equipped with an
interlock-feature.
~ Depress the clutch pedal all the way.
~ Start the engine with the gearshift lever in
Neutral and the clutch pedal depressed.
(D Note
Always depress the clutch pedal fully when
changing gears . Do not hold the vehicle on
a hill with the clutch pedal partially de­
pressed. This may cause premature clutch
wear or damage .
@ Tips
-Resting your hand on the gearshift lever
knob while driving will cause premature
wear in the transmission.
- The back-up lights go on when you shift
into Reverse w ith the ignition on.

Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with mult itronic/5 tronic/tiptronic
The automatic transmission is controlled elec ­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected .
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical
driving mode. It will then change up early and
delay the downshifts to give better fuel econ ­
omy .
The transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty driving style characterized by quick ac ­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
t ion, frequent changes in speed and trave ling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode) ~ page 91.
Various automatic transmissions may be in­
stalled, depending on the model:
multitronic ® transmission
The multitronic ® transmission is a continuous ­
ly variable transmission. Power is transferred
using a multidisk clutch. In contrast to con­
ventional automatic transmissions using shift­ ing operations, the transmission ratio in the
continuously variable transmiss ion is changed
continuously . This optimizes the comfort level
and conserves fuel.
S tronic® transmission
The S tronic ® is a dual-clutch transmission .
Power is transferred using two clutches that
work independently from one another_ They
replace the torque converter used in conven­
tiona l automatic transmissions and allow the ..,_

vehicle to accelerate without a noticeable in­
terruption in traction.
tiptronic transmission
I n the tiptronic transmission, power is trans­
ferred by a torque converter.
Selector lever positions

P - Park
In this selector lever position the transmis­
sion is mechanically locked. Engage P only
when the vehicle is
completely stopped ¢ &

To shift in or out of pos ition P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the release button in the selector lever handle
wh ile mov ing the se lector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of this position only with the
ignition on .
R-Reverse
Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the engine is running at idle speed ¢ & in

page 94 .
Before you move the selector lever to R, press
both the release button in the handle of the
selector lever
and the brake pedal at the same
time. When the
ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.
N -Neutral
The transmission is in neutral in this position .

brakes applied ¢

When the vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), yo u must always apply
the footbrake before and whi le moving the
lever out of N.
D/S - Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmission can be
operated either in the normal mode D or in
the sport mode S . To select the sport mode S,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will se lect the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster disp lay shows the
selected driving mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv­
ing style .
Select the
sport mode S for sporty driving .
T he vehicle makes full use of the engine's
power. Shift ing may become noticeable when
accelerating.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always app ly
the foot brake before and while moving the lever to D/S out of N.

(D Note
Coasting downhill with the transm ission in
N and the engine not running will result in
damage to the automatic transmission
and possibly the catalytic conve rter. .,..

-On vehicles with drive select*, you can
adjust the sporty shift characteristics in
the
Dynamic driving mode.Swill appear
in the instrument cluster display instead
ofD.
- If you accidentally select N while driving,
take your foot off the accelerator pedal
immediately and wait for the engine to
slow down to idle before selecting D/S.
- If there is a power failure, the selector
lever will not move out of the P position .

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
Applies to vehicles: with multitronic/5 tronic/tiptron ic
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally.

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po·
sitions when the ignition is turned on . You
must press the brake pedal and the release
button to select another position. As a re·
m inder to the driver, the following warning

when the selector is in P and N:
When stationary apply brake pedal while se­
lecting gear
The Automatic Shift Lock only functions when
the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 1 mph (2 km/h).
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the
Automatic Shift Lock is automatically deacti­
vated in the N position .
A time delay element prevents the selector lever from locking when it is moved through
the N position (going from R to D/S). The lock­
ing element will lock the selector lever if the
lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
proximately 2 seconds, without the brake ped­
al being pressed.
Release button
The release button on the selector lever pre­
vents the lever from be ing accidentally shifted
into certain positions. Depending on the direc­
tion of the shift, the selector lever locks at dif­
ferent positions. The positions are highlighted
in the illustration¢
fig. 104 .
Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition
unless the selector lever is in the P park posi­
tion. When the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever will be locked in the P position.

A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collis ions, other accidents
and serious personal injuries.
- Pressing the
ISE TI button whe n driving at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), will au­
tomat ica lly accelerate the veh icle to
20 mph (30 km/h), which is the m ini­
mum speed that can be set.
@ Tips
- If you switch the ignition or the adapt ive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- The elect ronic stabilization control (ESC)
and the anti-slip-regulation (ASR) are au­
tomatically tu rned on when the adaptive
cruise control is turned on. Both systems
cannot be turned off if the adaptive
cruise control is turned on. Allroad: You cannot switch the ESC to the offroad
mode when adaptive cruise control is
switched on.

~ To increase or reduce the distance by incre­
ments, tap the switch again to the left or
right. The distance between the two veh icles
will change in the instrument cluster d is­
play.
When approaching a moving vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cru ise cont rol system brakes to
matc h that object's speed and then maintains
the stored d istance. If the vehicle ahead ac ­
celerates, adaptive cruise control will also ac ­
celerate up to the stored speed.

when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interva l of 1.3 seconds .

A WARNING
Following other vehicles too closely in­
creases the risk of collis ions and ser ious
personal injury .
- Sett ing short distances to the traffic
ahead reduces the time and distance
availab le to bring your vehicle to a safe
stop and makes it even more necessary
to pay close attention to traffic.

- Always obey applicable t raffic laws, use
good judgment, and select a safe follow­
ing d istance for the t raff ic, road and
weather conditions .

- If a co llision is imminent, the system will
first provide an
acute warning by bri efly and
sharp ly app ly ing the brakes .
- If you do not react to the ac ute warning ,
braking guard can brake within the limits of
the system. This reduces the veh icle speed
in the event of a collision.
- At speeds under 20 mph (30 km/h), the sys ­
tem can in it iate a complete deceleration
s hortly before a collision .

- If the braking guard senses that you are not
braking hard enough when a collision is im­
minent, it can increase the braking force.
Which funct ion s can be contr oll ed ?
You can switch braking guard and the dis­
tance/approach warning on or off in the radio
or MM I c> poge 106, Settings in the radio/
MMI.
A WARNING
Lack of attention can cause col lisions, oth­
er accidents and serious personal injuries.
The braking guard is an assist system and
cannot prevent a collis ion by itself. The
driver must always intervene . The driver is
always responsib le for bra king at the cor­
rect time.
- Always pay close attention to traffic,
even when the brak ing guard is switched
on. Be ready to intervene and be ready to
take complete control whenever necessa­
ry. A lways keep the safe and legal dis­
tance between your vehicle and vehicles
up ahead.
- Braking guard works w ith in limits and
will not respond outs ide the system lim­
its, for example when approaching a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle
(end of a traff ic jam or veh icle that has
broken down in traffic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor
for the braking guard works only within
defined detection and range limits that
l ) Th is is not available in some c oun tri es.
may prevent the proper detection of oth­
er vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range
can be reduced by rain, snow and heavy
spray. Moving veh icles up ahead may not
be prompt ly detected or may not be de­
tected at all .
- Reflective surfaces including crash barri­
ers or tunne l entrances may impair the
function of the radar sensor .
(D Tips
- You can cancel the braking that is in it iat­
ed by the system by braking yourse lf, by
accelerating not iceably or by swerving .
- Braking guard error messages

- Keep in mind that brak ing guard can
brake unexpectedly. Always secure any
cargo or objects that you are transport­
ing to reduce the risk of damage or in­
jury .

Parking system
Applies to vehicles: with pa rking system
Different park assist systems may be used for
parking or maneuvering, depending on the
vehicle's features.
Parking system (rear)*:
For the parking system (rear), the acoustic
park assist system is installed in the rear of
the vehicle
¢ page 116.
The rear parking assist system uses ultrason ic
sensors to determine the distance of the vehi­
cle from a detected obstacle. There are a total
of four sensors located on the rear bumper
(two in the middle and two on the sides).
Parking system (rear, with rear view
camera)*:
For the parking system (rear, with rear view
camera),
the rear acoustic park assist system
is integrated in the rear of the vehicle and the
rear view camera is integrated in the rear lid
¢page 119.
The parking system (rear, with rear view cam­
era)
uses ultrasonic sensors to determine the
distance of the vehicle from a detected obsta­
cle . There are a total of four sensors located
on the rear bumper (two in the middle and
two on the sides).
Parking system (rear)
Rear acoustic park assist

The rear acoustic park assist warns you of ob­
stacles or objects behind your car.
Description
The rear acoustic parking ass ist system deter­
mines the distance of the vehicle from an ob­
stacle using ultrasonic sensors. There are 4
sensors in the rear bumper.
The range at which the senso rs start to meas­
ure is
about :
To the side 2 ft (0.60 m)
Center rear 5.2 ft (1.60 m)
Activation
Acoustic parking assist is activated automati­
ca lly when
reverse gear is engaged. A brief
tone confirms that the system is activated.
Warning tones
Distance warning is given by warn ing tones
which are generated by the rear signal genera­
tor. The volume and the pitch of the warning
tones can be adjusted in the MMI*
¢page 117.
Reversing
Distance warning when reversing starts when
an obstacle is detected in the range of the
parking assist system . As the distance de­
creases, the time interval between the audible
tones becomes shorter.
When the distance is less than 1ft (0.30 m),
the tone becomes continuous. At this point
you should stop backing up .
Please note that low objects already signalled
by a warning can disappear from the system's
detection range and will not continue to be
signalled .
If the distance to an obstacle remains the
same, the volume of the distance warning is
gradua lly reduced after about 4 seconds (this
does not apply in the continous tone range).
Approaching another obstacle will resu lt in
the distance warning sounding at the normal
volume again.
Malfunctions in the system
If a warning tone is audible for about five sec­
onds when you turn on the ignition , there is a
malfunction in the system. Have the problem
corrected by your authorized Audi dealer.
Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean and
free from ice so that the acoustic park assist
system can function properly.

The accuracy of the orientation lines and blue
surfaces diminis hes if:
- the rear view camera does not prov ide a re li­
able image, for examp le, in poor vis ibility
conditions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to
sun g lare and reflection .
Caring for th e rear view came ra lens
The rear view camera is located above the rear
license plate b racket . Fo r the pa rking assist to
ope rate, the lens
,=:, fig. 131 must be kept
clean:
- Dampen the lens with a househo ld alcohol­
based glass cleane r, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth

- Remove s now with a hand brush and ice
prefe rably with a de-icing spray

A WARNING
- T he pa rking aid cannot repla ce the dr iv­
er's attention . The driver a lone is respon­
sible for parking and similar driving ma­
neuvers .
- Always keep your eyes on the vehicle's
su rroundings, using the rear view mirror
as well.
- Do not a llow yourse lf to be d istracted
from traffic by the rear view camera pic­
tures.
- If the position and the installation ang le
of the camera has changed, fo r example,
after a rear end collision, do not continue
to use the system for safety reasons. Have it checked by a qua lified dealership.
(D Note
- Low obstacles already signaled by a
warning can disappear from the system's
detection range as they are approached
and will not continue to be signaled . Ob­
jects such as barrier cha ins, trailer draw
bars, thin pa inted ve rtical po les o r fe n­
ces may not be detected by t he system,
pos ing risk of damage .
- Never use warm or hot water to remove
s n ow or ice from the rear view camera

Switching on/off
Applies to vehicles: with parking system (rear, with rear
view camera)
The rear view camera switches on automati­
cally together with the acoustic park assist
when you put the vehicle in reverse.
Switching on
"' Put the veh icle in reverse gear, the acoust ic
parking system with rear view camera is ac ­
tivated automat ica lly. Act ivat ion of the
acoust ic par king system is confirmed by a
brief ac knowledgement sou nd.
Switching off
"' Drive faster than 9 mph (15 km/h) , or
"' take the vehicle out of reverse gear . The
acoust ic park ing system is immediate ly de­
activated, and the rea r view came ra p icture
is deact ivated a utomat ically afte r a pe riod
o f abo ut 1 5 seconds , or
"' switch off the ignition.
T he de lay in deact ivat ing the camera prov ides
an unin terrup ted view beh ind the ve hicle es­
pe cially when mane uver ing in tig ht park ing
spaces and prevents the picture from t urning
off th e ev ery time you shift out of reverse .
If the wa rning mess age ap pears in the dis play
but not the rea r view came ra p icture, read and
confirm the warni ng message . T he acoustic
distance signal is always active .
If you press a fu nction button on the M MI
control console, the rea r view came ra p icture
disappears . The rear view camera picture reap­
pears the next time yo u pa rk.

In the MMI display, the direction of travel
of the vehicle rear is represented depend­ing on the steering wheel angle. The vehi­
cle front swings out more than the vehicle
rear. Maintain plenty of distance from an
obstacle so that your outside mirror or a
corner of your vehicle does not collide with
any obstacles -danger of accident!
@ Tips
The left or right orientation lines and sur­
faces will be displayed, depending on the turn signal being used.
Adjusting the display and warning tones
Applies to vehicles: with parking system (rear, with rear
view camera)
The display and warning tones are adjusted in
the radio or MM!*.

Display
- Off -when the parking system is switched
off, only audible signals are given.
- On -when the parking system is switched
on, the picture from the rear view camera is
displayed.
Warning tones
- Rear volume -
rear sensor volume
-Rear frequency -rear sensor frequency
-Music volume while parking -when the
parking system is switched on, the volume
of the active audio source is lowered.
The newly adjusted value is briefly heard from
the signal generator. The settings are auto­
matically stored and assigned to the remote
control key.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that the volume and
frequency of the warning tones is adjust­
ed so that you can easily hear the acous­
tic distance signal even if the radio is
playing, the air-conditioner blower is on
High or there is a high level of outside
noise.
- Check the settings whenever someone
else has driven the vehicle before you.
@ Tips
- The warning tones can also be adjusted
directly from the rear view camera im­
age. Simply press the Settings* control
button.
- Changed settings are activated when
parking assist is switched on again.
Error messages
Applies to vehicles: with parking system (rear, with rear
view camera)
-
If a warning tone is audible for about five sec­
onds when you turn on the ignition, there is a
malfunction in the system. Have the problem
corrected by your authorized Audi dealer.
Keep the sensors in the rear bumper clean and
free from ice so that the acoustic park assist system can function properly.

• To open the garage door, press the pro­
grammed button. The LED @will light up or
flash.
• To close the garage door, press the button
again.
@ Tips
To open the garage door, press the button, but do not press it for longer ten seconds
or the Homelink module will switch to
programming mode.
Programming the transmitter (version
A)

You can program the fixed code and rolling
code systems using the described procedure.
Programming the button
• Turn the ignition on .
• There are two ways to program the button:
Press the button¢ page
123, fig. 136 that
you would like to program. Use the instruc­
tions that appear in the MMI* to perform
the programming. Or
• Select:
I CARI function button > Car sys­
tems*
control button > Vehicle settings >
Garage door opener> Program garage door
opener .
• Select the button that you would like to
program.
• Follow the instructions in the
MMI*.
• If the garage door opening must also be
synchronized with the Homelink module,
refer to the owner's manual for the garage
door opener. Remote
control units for garage door openers
in Canada are set to stop transmitting radio
frequency signals after two seconds. This time
may not be sufficient for the Home link sys­
tem to learn the radio frequency signal. Per·
form all other steps as described above .
Erasing/Clearing the programmed button
settings
• To erase all of the programmed buttons at
the same time, select:
I CAR I function button
> Car Systems" control button > Vehicle set­
tings
> Garage door opener> Clear pro­
gram settings > Yes.
The programmed but­
tons can not be erased individually . Repro­
gram the buttons if necessary.
• Reprogram an individual button in the same
manner that you would for the one-time
programming .
Displaying the version/status/country
code
• Select: I CAR ! function button > Car sys·
terns*
control button > Vehicle settings >
Garage door opener> Version information .
(D Tips
-Programming using the MMI* is not
available for all vehicle versions.
- The required distance between the hand
transmitter and the Homelink module in
the radiator grille ¢fig.
137 depends on
the system that you are programming .
- Depending on the model of the garage
door opener, you may need to release the
button on the remote and press it again
when programming. When program­
ming a new device, keep the button
pressed for at least 15 seconds before
trying again with the transmitter in a dif­
ferent position.
