Depending on the vehicle equ ipment level,
you may choose between the quartz clock or
the GPS controlled clock*

Odometer/trip odometer
The display of distance driven is shown in kilo­
meters "km" or in miles "mi".
- USA mode ls - Miles
- Canada models -Kilometers
The units of measure (kilometers/miles) can
be changed in the radio or MMI*. You can
learn more about this in the MMI manual or in
the radio user's manual.
The odometer @ shows the total number of
kilometers or miles that have been driven on
the vehicle . T
he trip odometer @shows the distance driv­
en since it was last reset. It can be used to
measure short distances. The last d igit shows
distances of 100 meters or 1/10 of a mile.
T he trip odometer can be reset to zero by
pressing the reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunct ion somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
DEF will appear in the trip
odometer and w ill stay on. Contact your au­
thorized Audi dea ler to have the problem cor ­
rected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is switched on, the data on
the ignition key are scanned automat ica lly.
If an unauthor ized key was used, SAFE is dis­
played permanently in the odometer display
field . The vehicle cannot be opera ted
r::!;>p age32 .
(D Tips
- When you switch off the ignition or open
the driver door, the time, date, odome­
ter and temperature are displayed for an
additional
30 seconds .
- Yo u can also call up the display with the
!SET ! button r::!;> page 11 while the igni­
tion is switched off .
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is
on.

misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex ­
haust system . The catalytic converter
could then overheat and be damaged .
Warning/indicator
lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or
m alfunctions
c::> .&. .
Messages may appear with some indicator
lights. A warning signal will sound at the
same time . The messages disappear again af­
ter a short t ime. To display a message again,
press the
I S ET I bu tton c::> page 11 . If several
malfunction s occur, each of the indicator/
warn ing lamps will be d isplayed in succession
for about two seconds at a time.
Some ind icators ligh ts in the display can turn
on in several colors.
A WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other
important vehicle info rmation may result
in serious personal injury o r vehicle dam­
age.
- Whenever sta lled or s topped for repa ir,
move the vehicle a safe dis tance off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the
emergency flasher

- T he engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a poten tially hazardous a rea.
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme ca u­
t ion when working under the hood

Overview
Some ind icator lights turn on briefly to check
the function of that system when you switch
the ignition on . T hese systems are marked
with a./ in t he followi ng tab les. If one of
these ind icator lights does no t turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system.

-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the en­
gine compartment -you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any veh icle
is a dangerous area . Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn of the eng ine and allow it to cool.

engine cooling system -you could damage

@-Steering column lock
• Stee ring def ective! D o not drive vehicle!
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, the re is an elect ronic steer ing
col umn lock ma lfunction. You ca nnot switch
the ign ition on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because it ca nnot be
steered. Seek professional ass istance.
Ill! Ste ering lock: Contact d ealer!
If the indicator light t urns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is an electronic steer ing
column lock malfunction.
Drive to yo ur authorized Audi dea le r immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
-
Your vehicle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunct ion in the electron ic
steering column lock because it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering .
If it is
tow ed w ith th e stee ring lock ed, there is
the risk of a n accident .
©-Ignition lock
• Ignition lock d efe ctive. Contact d eal er! If
the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, do
not switch the ignition off
because you may not be ab le to sw itch it on
again.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the ma lfunction corrected.
On vehicles with conve nience key*, the engine
shou ld not be switched off using the
I STAR T ENGINE ST OPI button because the en­
gine cannot be started again after the ignition
has been switched off.

FJ,/ ~ Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the Jj] ind icator light blinks while driv ing ,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is active­
ly regu lating.
If the D] ind icator light turns on , the system
has switched the ESC off . In this case, you can
switch the ign ition off and then on to switch
the ESC on aga in. The ind icator lig ht tu rns off
whe n the system is functioning f ully.

Stabilizat ion control (ESC /ABS ): Fault! See

If the indicator light DJ and the ABS indicator
light
fJD (USA models) ; tiJ (Canada models)
turn on and the message appears, the ABS or
electron ic different ial lock is malfunctioning .
Th is also causes the ESC to malfunction . The
brakes still function with their normal power,
but A BS is not active.

A WARNING ,~ ~
If the ~ (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light turns
on together with the ABS and ESC indica­
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function
may have failed. Functions that stabilize
t he vehicle are no longer avai lab le. This
cou ld cause the vehicle to swerve and in­
crease the risk of sliding . Drive caref ully to
the nearest a uthorized Audi dea ler and
have the malfunction corrected.

ABS/(@!) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light rII:1 (USA mod ­
els)/ [I] (Ca nada models) w ill come o n for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
The light will go out after an a utomatic chec k
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when :
- The warning/ indicator lig ht does not illumi ­
na te when you swi tc h t he ignition on.
- T he warning/i ndicator lig ht does not go out
after a few seconds .
- T he warn ing/ind icator lig ht illuminates
wh ile driving.
T he ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes­
sage
Stabilization contro l (ESC) : Fault! See
owner 's manual
also appears in the inst ru­
men t clus ter display and a war ning tone
sounds.
Th e brake sy ste m will still respond even
without th e assi stan ce of the ABS sy ste m .

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake war ning l igh t c::> page 15 and the
ABS wa rning illuminate
together there may be
a malfunct ion in the ABS , and there may a lso
be a malfunction in the brake system itself
c::> A . The AB S will not wo rk and you w ill no ­
tice a change in b raking response and per ­
formance .

Malfunction in th e electronic diff erential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the EDL system

See your author ized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible.
A WARNING
- I f the trm (USA mode ls)/ [I] (Canad a
models) warning light does not go ou t,
-
or if it comes on while dr iving, the ABS
system is not wor king p roperly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only w it h the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS prov ides.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer as
soon as possible .
-USA models: If the ~ warning light

trm warning light come on to­
gethe r, the rear wheels could lock up
f ir st under hard bra king. R ear wh eel lock­
up can ca use loss of vehicle control and
a n ac cident . H ave yo ur vehicle repaire d
immed iate ly by yo ur authorize d Aud i
dea le r o r qualified works hop. Drive slow­
ly and avo id sudden, hard brake applica­
tions.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light . and the ABS warning light
[I]
come on together, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard braking. Rear
wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
con tro l and an accident. Have your

If the symbol II illuminates, the dynam ic
headlight range cont rol is no longer wo rking
properly. Have the system checked and re­
pa ired at your author iz ed Audi dealer.
~O Adaptive Light
Applies to vehicles: with adaptive light
111 Aud i adaptive l ight: defective
If t he indicator lig ht t urns on a nd th is mes­
sage appears, t he re is a ma lfunction in the
adapt ive light system. The headlig hts still
function.
Go to an a uth o rized dea le rship to have the
headlights or the contro l unit for the adapt ive
light repa ired.

Applies to vehicles: with light/rain sensor
£I Automatic headlights/ automatic wipers

If the indicator light t urns on and th is mes­
sage appears, the lig ht/ra in sensor is n ot
f u nctioning cor rectly .
For safety reasons the low beams are turned
on permanent ly w ith the switch in AUTO .
H owever, you can c ontinue to turn the lights
on and off using the light switc h. You can still
con trol a ll funct ions tha t are in depe nden t of
the rai n sensor through the wi ndshi eld wipe r
l eve r.
Contact your author ized Audi dealer as soon
as possible to have the prob lem cor rected .
Q Adaptive dampers
Applies to vehicles: with Audi drive select and adaptive
dampers
H Suspension: System fault!
If t he
H symbol in the disp lay comes on,
there is a malfunction in the adaptive damp ­
e rs . Please go to an authorized Audi dea ler or
qua lified workshop to have the malfu nction
repaired.
I-: Sport differential
Applies to vehicles: with Audi drive select and sport dif­
ferential
Sport differential : System fault!
There is a malfunction with t he sport d iffe ren­
tia l.
D rive to your au thorized A udi dealer immedi ­
ate ly to have the ma lfunction corrected.
Sport differential : Overheating
T he trans missio n tempera ture has inc reased
s ignifica ntly due to t he spor ty d riving manner .
Dr ive in a less sporty ma nner until the tem­
p era ture re tur ns to the normal range and t he
in dica to r li ght switc he s of.

Co ntac t your author ized Audi dealer or
qu alified wor kshop if the s port differential
i s faulty or malfunct io ning. T he repair
must be perf ormed by t rained personnel
usi ng the co rrect oil in o rder to ensure
safety.

Opening and closing
Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors and the rear lid simultaneously.
You can lock and unlock the vehicle centrally.
You have the following choices:
- Remote master key~
page 34,
-Door handles with convenience key*

-Lock cylinder at the dr iver's door

- Power lo cking switc h inside

Automatic locking
The automat ic locking feature locks all the ve­
hi cle doors and the rear lid when you drive
faster than 9 mph (15 km/h).
The car is un locked again once the ignition key
is removed . In addition, the veh icle can be un­
locked if the opening fu nction in the power
lock ing system sw itch or at one of the door
l eve rs is actuated. The Au to Lo ck function can
be turned o n and off in the rad io or
MMI*
r=> page 36 .
Additionally, in the event of a c rash with air­
bag deployment the doors are automatically
u nl ocked to a llow access to the veh icle.
Selective unlocking
When you lock the vehicle, the power locking
system w ill lock the doors and the rear lid.
W hen unlocking, you ca n set in the rad io or
M MI* whethe r
only the dr iver's door or t he
enti re ve hicle should be unlocked
r=> page 3 6.
Anti -theft alarm warning system
If the a nti-theft alarm warning system de­
tects a brea k-in into t he vehicle, acoust ic and
visua l wa rning sig na ls are triggered.
The an ti-theft warn ing system is act ivated au­
tomatically when you lock the vehicle .
It is de­
activated when u nlocking using the remote

key, w ith the mechan ica l key, and when you
switch on the ignition.
T he al arm a lso t urns off w hen t he a la rm cy cl e
has expired.
Turn signals
When you u nlock the ve hicle, the turn signals
flash twice, when yo u lock it once. If they do
not flash, one of the doo rs, the luggage com ­
partment lid or the hood is not lo cked or the
ignition is s till sw itched on.
Unint entionally locking yourself out
In the follow ing cases there safeg uards to
prevent you lock ing you r remote master key in
t h e ve hicl e:
- The vehicle does not loc k w ith the power
lock ing switc h
r=> page 35 if the drive r's
door is open.
- On veh icles with convenience key*, if the
most recently used master key is in the lug­
gage compartment, the rear lid is a utomat i­
cally u nlocked again after it is closed.
Do not lock your veh icle w ith the remote mas­
te r key o r convenience key* unt il all doors a nd
the rear lid a re closed. In this way you avoid
l ocking yo urse lf o ut accidentally.

-When you leave the veh icle, alw ays re ­
move the ignition key an d take it with
you. This wi ll prevent passengers (chil­
dren, for example) from acc identally be ­
ing locked in the vehicle should they acci­
dentally press the power locking switch in the front doors.
- Do not leave ch ildren inside the vehicle
unsuperv ised. In an emergency it would
be imposs ible to open the doors from
the o utside w itho ut the key.
(D Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag de­
ployment all locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to give access to the
v ehicle occupants from the outside.

- If the power locking system should ma l­
function, you can lock the driver's door us ing the mechanical key
c:> page 3 7.
- If the power locking system should fail,
you can sti ll open the fue l tank flap in an
emergency
c:> page 211.
- You are we ll advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visib le
or not. Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe.
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driv­
er's door panel comes on for abo ut 30
seconds after the vehicle is locked, there i s a ma lfunction in the power locki ng or
the anti-theft warning system. Have the
malfunction corrected by an author ized

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remo te con trol. A mec hanical key is integ rat­

@ Emergency key
The emergency key is not intended for con­
stant use.
It should on ly be used in an emer­
gen cy, fo r example, in place of the ign ition key
cc> page 84. Keep it in a s afe p lace and do
not ca rry it on your key ring .
Key replacement
If you lose a key, contact you r authorized Audi
dealer immed iate ly to have the

bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you .
Number of keys
You can check the number of assigned keys to
yo ur vehicle
c:> page 11. This allows you to
make su re you have re ceived all of the keys
when you purchase a used vehicle.
Data in the master key
D uring d riving, s ervice and maintenance-rele­
vant data is continuously stored on your mas­
te r k ey. Your Aud i service adviser can read out
t hi s data and tell you abo ut the work yo ur
ve­
hicle needs . This applies also to vehicles with
convenience key*.
Personal comfort settings
If two people use one veh icle, it i s r ecom­
men ded that e ach person alw ays uses "t heir
own" maste r key. When the ignition is tu rne d
off or when the vehicle is locked, personal
convenience setti ngs for the following sys ­
tems are stored and assigned to the remote
master key.
- Climate contro l
- Powe r lock ing system
- Seat memory *
- Parking system*
- Adapt ive cru ise control*
- Side assist*
- Drive se lect*
T he s to red settings are au toma tically recalled
whe n you unlock the vehicle, when yo u open
t h e doors or w hen you t urn on t he ignitio n.
