Anewvehiclemustbebrokeninwithinthefirst
1,000miles(1,500km)sothatallmovingparts
worksmoothlytogether,whichhelpsto increase
theservicelifeoftheengine.
Donotdrivehigherthantwo-thirds ofthemaxi-
mumpermittedengineRPMduringthefirst600
miles(1,000km)and donotusefullaccelera-
tion.TheenginecanbeincreasedRPMgradually
duringthenext300miles(500km).
Reducingthe riskofvehicledamage
Thegroundclearanceistoolowonsomemodels
todriveonroughterrain.Therefore, avoidoff-
roadtrips.

Whendrivingonpoorroads,overcurbs,and
onsteepramps,makesurethatcomponents
thathang belowthevehicle,suchasthespoil-
erandexhaustsystem,arenotstruckbecause
theycouldbedamaged.Thisespeciallyap-

andvehiclesthatareheavilyloaded.

Difficultterrain
Whendrivinginunfamiliarareasandoffroad,
driveslowlyandkeeponthewatchforunexpect-
edobstacles(such aspotholes,rocks,tree
stumps,etc.).
Topreventthevehiclefrombottomingoutandto
reducetheriskofunderbodydamage,youshould
driveacrossunevengroundononlyonesideof
thevehiclesothatonlytwoofyourwheelscross
theunevenarea,insteadofdrivingacrossthe
centeroftheunevenareawithallfourwheels.

Automatictransmission
Introduction

Theautomatictransmissioniscontrolledelec-
tronically.Thetransmissionshiftsupordownau-
tomaticallydependingonwhichdriveprogramis
selected.
Whenamoderatedrivingstyleisused,the
transmissionselectsthemosteconomicaldriving
mode.ThetransmissionupshiftsatalowerRPM

anddownshiftsatahigherRPMtoimprovefuel
efficiency.
Thetransmissionswitchestoasportymodeafter
akick-downor whenthedriverusesasportydriv-
ingstylecharacterizedbyquickacceleratorpedal
movements,heavyacceleration,frequent
changesinspeed,andtravelingatthemaximum
speed.
Ifdesired,thedrivercanalsoselectthegears
manually(tiptronicmode)>page88.
Stronictransmission
TheStronicisadual-clutchtransmission.Power
istransferredusingtwoclutchesthatworkinde-
pendentlyfromoneanother.Theyreplacethe
torqueconverterusedinconventionalautomatic
transmissionsandallowthevehicletoaccelerate
withoutanoticeableinterruptionintraction.

Theadaptivecruisecontrolsystemisacombina-
tionofspeedanddistanceregulation.Itassists
thedriverbybothregulatingthespeedand
maintainingadistancetothevehicledriving
ahead,withinthelimitsofthesystem.Ifthesys-
temdetectsavehicledrivingahead,theadaptive
cruisecontrolcanbrakeandaccelerateyourvehi-
cle.This increasesdrivingcomfortduringlong
tripsonhighwaysandinstop-and-gotraffic(au-
tomatictransmission*).
Whatcanadaptivecruisecontroldo?
Theadaptivecruisecontrolsystemusesvideo,ra-
dar,ultrasoundandnavigationdata.Vehicles
drivingaheadcanberecognizedupto650ft
(200m)away.
Predictivefunctionsofferthedriveradditional
comfortandcontributetothereductioninfuel
consumptionandCO2emissions>page101.
Onopenroadswithnotraffic,itfunctionslikea
cruisecontrolsystem.Thestoredspeedismain-
tained.Whenapproachingavehicledriving
ahead,theadaptivecruisecontrolsystemauto-
maticallybrakestomatchthatvehicle'sspeed
andthenmaintainsthesetdistance.Assoonas
thesystemdoesnotdetectavehicledriving
ahead,adaptivecruisecontrolacceleratesupto
thestoredspeed.
