Always dep ress the clutch peda l fully when
chang ing gears . Do not hold the vehicle on
a hill with the clutch pedal partially de­
pressed . This may cause p remature clutch
wear or damage .

You r vehicle is equip ped wi th an e lectronically
controlled,
continuou sly variable transmis­
sion (m ultitronic ®). In contrast to convention­
al automatic transmissions us ing shifting op ­
erations, the transmission ratio in the contin­ uo usly var iable transmission is changed con­
t in uously . This optimizes the comfort level
and conse rves fue l.
The gear rat io in the transmission is selected
(upsh ift and downshift) comp letely automati­
ca lly as a function of the def ined dr iv ing pro­
grams.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (t iptronic mode) .
Instead of the torque converter in convention­
al automatic transmissi ons, your m ultitronic ®
transmission uses a mu ltidisc clutch for power
transmission . Therefore, the "creep behavior"
of the vehicle dur ing idling whe n temporar ily
st opped in selec to r l ever pos it ion D/S, or R is
l ess pronounced.
Applies to vehicles with a tiptronic
transmission
Your vehicle is equipped with an electronically
controlled automa tic transmiss io n. Upshift ing
and downsh ifting take place
automati cally.
If desired, the driver can also shift gears man ­
ually
( tiptronic mode ).

There is a system malfunction in the transmis­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair fa­
cility soon to have the malfunction corrected.
[O] Transmission malfunction: Limited driv·
ing functionality
There is a system malfunction in the transmis­
sion . The transmission is switching to emer­
gency mode. This mode only shifts into cer­
tain gears or will no longer shift at all. The en­
gine may stall. Drive to your authorized Audi
dealer or qualified repair facility immediately
to have the malfunction corrected .
[O] Transmission malfunction: Stop vehicle
and shift to park.
Do not continue driving. Select the P selector
lever position and see your authorized Audi
dealer or qualified repair facility for assis­
tance.
([) Note
If the transmission switches to emergency
mode, you should take the vehicle to an
authorized Audi dealership as soon as pos­
sible to have the condition corrected.
Emergency release of the selector lever
Applies to vehicles: with multitronic or tiptro nic
If the vehicle's power supply foils, the selec­
tor lever can be released in an emergency.

screwdriver or similar, press the bolt down

.,. Now press the interlock and move the selec-
tor lever to the N position .
The selector lever can only be moved from the
P position if the ignition key is in the lock and
the ignition is turned on . If the vehicle has to
be pushed or towed if the power supply fails
(e .g . battery is discharged), the selector lever
must first be moved to the N position using
the emergency locking device.
S tronic®
Introduction
Applies to vehicles : with S tronic transmission
Your vehicle is equipped with an electronical­
ly -controlled manual transmission called S
tronic ®. Two independent clutches transfer
the power between the engine and transmis­
s ion. They rep lace the torque converter used
in conventional automatic transmissions and
allow the vehicle to accelerate without a no­
ticeable interruption in traction.

ESC includes and/or works together with the
anti-lock brake system (ABS), brake assist sys ­
tem, anti -slip regulation (ASR) , e lectronic dif­
ferential lock (EDL), dynamic steering* and electronic i nteraxle differential lock* /selective
wheel torque control* . ESC is switched on all
the t ime. I n certain s ituations when you need
less traction, you can switch
off ASR by press­
i ng the button~~
page 186, fig. 159 or
~ page 186, fig. 160. Be sure to sw itch ASR
on again when you no longer need less trac­
tion.
Anti-lock b ra king s ystem (ABS)
ABS prevents the wheels from locking up
when braking. The vehicle can still be steered
even d uring hard brak ing . Apply ste ady p res­
sure to the brake pedal. Do not pump the ped­
a l. A pulsing in the brake peda l indicates t hat
the system is he lping you to brake the vehicle .
Brake assist system
The brake assist system can decrease bra king
d istance. It increases braking power when the
d river presses the brake pedal quick ly in eme r­
gency situations . You must press and hold the
brake peda l until the situation is over. In
veh icles w ith adaptive cru ise contro l*, the
brake assist system is more sensit ive if the
d istance detected to the veh icle ahead is too
small.
Anti- slip regulati on (ASR)
ASR reduces engine power when the drive
wheels begin to spin and adapts the force to
the road condit ions. This makes it eas ier to
start, accelerate and drive up hills.
Elect ronic diffe renti al lo ck (EDL )
The ED L brakes wheels that are spinning and
transfers the drive power to the other drive
wheel or wheels if the vehicle is equipped with
all-wheel drive*. This function is available up
to about 60 mph (100 km/h) .
In extreme cases, EDL automatica lly switches
off to help keep the brake on the braked whee l
from overheating. EDL w ill switch on again au-

tomat ica lly when conditions have returned to
norma l.
Dynamic steering*
On vehicles with dynam ic steering*, ESC helps
stab il ize the s teer ing in crit ica l sit uat io ns.
Electronic interaxle differential lock* /
selective wheel torque control*
T he electronic i nteraxle differential lock (front
whee l dr ive) or the se lective whee l to rque
control (all-whee l dr ive) opera tes when dr iv­
ing thro ugh curves. The front wheel on the in­
side of the c urve or both whee ls on the inside
of the curve are braked selectively as needed .
This min imizes sliding in the front wheels and
allows for more precise driving through
cu rves . The applicable system may not acti­
vate when dr iv ing in wet or snowy conditions.
A WARNING
- ESC, ABS , ASR, EDL dynam ic steering*
a nd the elect ronic interaxle differential
loc k* /se lective wheel torque control*
function cannot overcome the laws of
physics. This is especially important on
slippery or wet roads . If the systems be­
gin acting to stabilize your vehicle, you
should immediately change yo ur speed
to match the road and traff ic conditions.
Do not let the increased safety provided
by these systems tempt you to take risks .
Doing so will increase the risk of a loss of
veh icle contro l, col lision and ser ious per­
sonal injuries.
- Always adapt your speed to road, traffi c
and wea ther conditions. The risk of los­
ing con tro l of the vehicle increases when
driving too fast, espec ially through
curves and on slippery or wet roads, and
when dr iv ing too close to vehicles up
ahead. ESC, ABS, the brake ass ist sys­
tem, ASR, EDL dynam ic steering* and the
electronic interaxle differentia l lock*/se­
lective whee l torque control* function
cannot prevent collisions.

sary . Follow the instructions from the
snow cha in manufacturer when doing so.

Where snow chains are mandatory oncer ­
tain roads, this norma lly also applies to
veh icles with all wheel drive.
Wheel bolts
Wheel bolts must always be tightened to the
correct torque.
The design o f whee l bolts is matched to the
factory insta lled r ims . If different rims are fit ­
ted, the correct wheel bo lts wit h the right
l ength and correctly shaped bolt heads must
be used. This ensures that wheels are f itted
securely and that the brake system functions
correctly .
In certain circumstances, you may not use
wheel bo lts from a different vehicle -even if it
is the same model
<=> page 274.
A WARNING
Improperly tightened or maintained wheel
bolts can become loose caus ing loss of
cont ro l, a co llision and serious persona l in­
Jury .
- Always keep the w heel bolts and the
threads in the wheel hubs clea n so the
w hee l bolts can t urn easily and be p rop­
erly t igh tened.
- Never grease or oil the wheel bolts and
the threads in the wheel h ubs. They can
become loose wh ile d riving if greased or
oiled, even if tightened to the specified
torq ue.
- Only use whee l bo lts that belong to the
rim being installed .
- Never use different whee ls bolts on your
vehicle.
- Alw ays m ain ta in the co rrec t tig hten ing
torq ue fo r the wheel bo lts to reduce the
risk of a wheel loss . If the tightening tor­
que of the wheel bo lts is too low, they
can loosen and come out when the vehi-

cle is mov ing. If the tightening torq ue is
too high, the wheel bolts and threads
can be damaged and the whee l can be­
come loose.
@ Note
The specified torque for the whee l bolts is
90 ft lbs . (120 Nm) w ith a tolerance of
± 7,4 ft lbs. (± 10 Nm). Torque whee l bolts
diagonally . After changi ng a wheel, the
torque m ust be checked as soon as poss i­
ble with a to rque wrench -preferably by an
a uthorized Aud i dea le r or qualified wor k­
shop.
Low aspect ratio tires
Your A udi is fac tory -eq uipped w ith low aspect
ratio tires . These tires have been tho ro ughly
tested and been se lected specifically for your
model for their superb performance, road fee l
and handling under a variety of driving condi­
tions . Ask your authorized Aud i dealer for
more details.
The low aspect ratio of these t ires is ind icated
by a numeral of
55 or less in the tire's size
designation. The numera l represents the ratio
of the tire's sidewa ll height in relation to its
tread width exp ressed in percentage. Conven­
tiona l tires have a he ight/w idth ratio of 60 or
more.
The performance of low-a spect-r atio tire s is
particularly sensit ive to improper inflation
pre ssure. It is therefor e important that low
a spect ratio tire s are inflated to the specified
pres sure and that th e inflation pr essure i s
regularly checked and maintained. Tire pre s­
sure s should be chec ked at lea st once a
month and always before a long trip

What you can do to avo id tire and rim
damage
Low aspect ratio tires can be damaged mo re
easily by impact w ith potholes, curbs, gull ies
or ridges on the road, particularly if the tire is
under inflated . ..,.

-To he lp prevent the vehicle from moving
sudden ly and possibly slipping off the
jack, always fully set the parking brake and block the whee l diagona lly opposite
the wheel being cha nged with the fold­
ing chocks o r othe r objects. When one
front whee l is lifted off the g ro und, plac­
ing the A utomat ic Transm iss ion in "P"
(Park) wi ll
not prevent the vehi cle from
moving .
- Before you change a wheel, be su re the
ground is level and f irm . If necessa ry,
use a sturdy board under the jack.
- After installing the spare tire, make s ure
that you replace the flat ti re/wheel in its
storage area proper ly and tighten the
knur led retain ing screw securely .
Q;) Note
If you are changing the wheel on a steep
incline, use a rock or similar object to
block the opposite wheel to prevent the
veh icle from mov ing.
Obey all laws .
Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel, follow the se­
quence described below step -by-step and in
exactly that order.
1. Remove the d ec orative wheel c ove r* or
the
wheel bolt cap s*. Fo r more de tails see

2 . Loosen the wheel bolts ¢ page 254.
3. Locate the proper mount ing po int for the
jack and align the jack below that point

6. Tighten all wheel bo lts light ly .

After changing a wheel
A wheel change is not complete without the

-The wheel bol ts should be clean and easy
to tu rn. Check for d irt and corrosion on
t h e mat ing s urfaces of both the whee l
and t he hu b. Remove a ll dirt from these
su rfaces before remo unt ing t he wheel.
- Do n ot use the hexagonal socket in the
screwdriver ha ndle to loosen or tig hten
t h e wheel bo lts .
Tires with unidirectional tread design
Tires with unidirectional tread design must be
mounted with their tread pattern pointed in the right direction.
Using a spare tire with a tread pattern
intended for use in a specific direction
When using a spare tire w ith a t read patte rn
i ntended for use in a specific direction, please
n ot e th e follow ing:
- The direction of rotation is ma rked by an
ar­
row on the s ide of the t ire .
-If the spare t i re has to be installed in the in­
correct di rection, use the spare tire only
temporar ily since the t ire will not be able to
achieve its optimum perfo rma nce character­
ist ics with r ega rd to aquaplani ng, noise and
wea r.
- We recommend that you pay particular at ­
tent io n t o this fact du ring wet weathe r and
t h at you adjus t your spee d to matc h road
cond itio ns.
- Replace th e flat tire w ith a n ew one and
have it ins talled o n your ve hicle as soon as
poss ible to re st ore the hand ling advant ages
of a uni direct io na l t ire .
Notes on wheel changing
Please rea d the information ¢ page 241, New
tires and replacing tires and wheels
if you are
going to use a spare t ire which is different
from the tires on your ve hicle.
Afte r you change a tire :
-Check the tire pressure on the spare imme­
diately after installation . What do I do now? 257
- Have the wheel bolt tightening torque
checked with a torque wrench as soon a s
possible by your authorized Audi dealer or
a qualified workshop .
- With steel and alloy wheel rims , the wheel
bolts are cor rectly tightened at a torque of
90 ft lbs. (120 Nm ).
- If you notice that the wheel bolts are cor·
roded and difficult to turn while changing
a tire, they should be replaced before you
check the tightening torque .
- Replace the flat tire with a new one and
have it installed on your veh icle as soon as
possible. Remount the wheel cover.
Until then , drive with extra care and at re·
duced speeds.
