-Do not remove the key from the ignition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com
plete stop . Otherwise the steer ing column
lock could suddenly engage -causing the
risk of an accident .

tem, it may happen that you cannot remove the

- In order to make sure the locking function is
work ing, you should always keep your eye
on the vehicle to make sure it is properly
locked .
- Do not use the remote control if you are in
side the car, otherwise you may uninten
t ionally lock the vehicle, and then you would
set off the anti-theft a larm when you t ry to
sta rt the eng ine or open a door. I n case this
happens anyhow, push the un lock button@.
- Use the pan ic function on ly if you a re in an
emerge ncy sit uat io n.

The doors and the rear lid con be unlocked and
locked without operating the master key .

The vehicle can be locked and un locked at any
door . The remote control key cannot be more
than 1.5 m away from the door handle. It makes
no difference whether the master key is in your
jacket pocket or in your brief case .
If you grip the door handle while locking, this can
adversely affect the locking function.
It is not possible to re-open the doo r for a b rief
period directly after closing it. This allows you to
ensure that the doors are properly locked .

If your vehicle has been standing for an ex
tended period, please note the following:
- The proximity sensors are deactivated after
a few days to save power . You then have to
pull on the door handle once to unlock the
vehicle and a second time to open the vehi
cle.
- To p revent the battery from being d is
charged and to preserve your vehicle's abili
ty to start for as long as possible, the ener
gy management system gradua lly switches
off unnecessary convenience functions. It is
possible that you w ill not be ab le to unlock
your vehicle using these convenience func tions .

If you lock the veh icle using the power lock ing
switch , please note the following:
- If a door is open, the veh icle cannot be locked
using the power locking system switch .
- You cannot open the doors or the rear lid from
the
outside (increased security, for example
when you are stopped at a red light) .
- The diodes in the power locking switch illumi
nate when a ll the doors are closed and locked .
- You can unlock and open the doors from the in
side by pulling on the door handle .
- If you have a crash and the airbag is act ivated,
the doors automatically unlock .
A WARNING
-- The power locking switch works with the ig-
n ition off and automatically locks the ent ire
veh icle when it is actuated.
- On a vehicle locked from the outs ide the
power locking system switch is inoperative .
- Locked doors make it more difficult for emergency workers to get into the vehicle,
which puts lives at r isk. Do not leave anyo ne
behind in the vehi cle, especially children.

the driver 's door. In vehicles w ith a convenienc e
key *, only the door whose hand le you pull will
unlock . If you press the @! button twice, the en
tire veh icle will unlock. If you press the

ton, the ent ire vehicle will a lways lock.

Once the front passenger's door has been closed,
you cannot open it again from the outside. The door can be opened from the inside by pulling
the door hand le.

Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents your vehicle from being
started by unauthorized persons .
Inside the key there is a computer chip. This chip
automatically activates/deactivates the electron ic immobilizer.
Applies to vehicles with ignition lock:
The electronic immobilizer deactivates automati
cally when you insert the remote control key into
the ignition lock . It activates again automatically
when you remove the remote control key from
the ignition lock .
Applies to vehicles with convenience key:
If the remote control key is located inside the ve
hicle and you press the
I START ENGINE STOPI
button, the electronic immobilizer deactivates
automatically. If you switch the ignition off and remove the remote control key from the vehicle,
the electronic immob ilizer act ivates aga in auto
mat ically.
A WARNING
Always take the key with you when you leave
the vehicle. The key can disarm the electron ic
eng ine immobiliz er and permit an unauthor
ized pe rson to start the engine and enable op
eration of the vehicle systems such as power
w indow or power sunroof leading to serious
personal injury.

- After closing the rear lid, a lways pu ll up on
it to make sure that it is properly closed.
Otherwise it co uld open suddenly when the
vehicle is mov ing.
- To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the veh icle, always keep
the rear lid closed while driving. Never
transport objects larger than those which fit
completely into the luggage area, because
then the rear lid cannot be fully closed .
- Never leave yo ur vehicle unattended espe
c ially w ith the rear lid left open . A child
could crawl into the car through the luggage
compartment and p ull the lid shut, becom
ing t rapped and unable to get ou t. To re
duce the r is k of persona l injury, never let
childre n play in or around your vehicle. Al
w ays keep the rear lid as well as the vehicle
doors closed when not in use.
- Always ensure that no one is within range of
th e rear lid when it is moving, in particular
close to the hinges -fingers or hands can be
pinched.

When the vehicle is locked, the rear lid can be
o pened separately by p ressing the button

on the master key. When you close the rear
lid again, it locks automatically.
Trunk escape handle
In cas e of an emerg ency, th e luggage compart
men t lid can be opened from the inside using the
t runk escape handle .

The driver can operate the window regulator for
the driver's door with the left switch and the win
dow regulator for the passenger's door with the
right switch .

A WARNING
- When you leave your vehicle -even if only
br iefly- always remove the ign ition key . This
applies particularly when children rema in in
the vehicle. Otherw ise the children could
sta rt the eng ine or operate electr ical equ ip
ment (e .g . power windows). The power w in
dows are functional unt il the dr iver's door or
p assenger's door has been opened.
- Pay close attention when closing the win
dows to prevent p inching of hands o r limbs .
- When loc king the veh icle from outside, the
vehicle must be unoccupied since t he win
dows can no longer be opened in an emer
gency.

- When yo u open the doo rs, the windows au
tomati cally lower abou t 10 mm.
- After the ignition has been switched off, the
windows can st il l be opened or closed for
abo ut 10 m inutes. The window regula to rs
are not sw itched until the driver 's or pas
senger's door is opened .
Convenience opening/closing
The windows and the panoramic tilting sunroof
can be opened and closed with the mechanical
key or the emergency key.

Correcting window regulator malfunction
After disconnecting the vehicle battery , the one
touch up and down feature must be activated
again.
• Pull and ho ld the power window switch until
the window is comp letely closed.
• Release the switch and pull the swi tch again for
one seco nd .

After the ign ition is switched off, you can still op·
erate the sunroof for about 10 minutes . As soon
as the d river's or passenge r's door is opened, the
sw itch is inoper ative.
Sun blind
The sun blind can be opened and closed manually in any position .
A WARNING
Pay carefu l attent ion when closing the sun·
roof· otherwise serious injury co uld result!
For this reason, always remove the ign ition
key when leaving the vehicle.

Always close your sunroof when leaving yo ur
veh icle. S udden ra in can cause damage to the
interio r equipmen t of your vehicle, particular
ly the elec tronic equipmen t.

Emergency closing of the panoramic tilting
sunroof
If the sunroof detects an object in i ts path when
it is closing, it will open again automatically. In
this case, you can close the roof with the power
emergency closing function .
• Within five seconds a fter the sunroof opens au
tomatically, pu ll the sw itch until the roof
closes .
Valet parking
Applies to vehicles: with valet parking function
The valet parking feature protects the luggage
compartment from unauthorized access.

You can switch the "valet pa rking func tion " on
whe n someo ne else is parking your veh icle. When
the f unction is switc hed on, the vehicle can be
dr iven, locked and unlocked using the master
key, but access to the luggage compartment is
not permitted.

Front passenger's exterior mirror tilt
function*
To help you see the curb when ba cking in to a
pa rking space , the surface of the mirror tilts
slightly. For this to happen, the knob must be in
the posit ion for the front passenger's outs ide
mirror.
You can adjust the ti lted mi rror sur fa ce by turn
ing the knob in the desired direction. When you
move out of reverse and into another gear, the
new mirror position is sto red and assigned to the
key yo u are using.
The mirror goes back into its o riginal position
once yo u drive forward faster than 9 mph
(15 km/h) or tu rn the ignition off .
A WARNING
Curved mirror surfaces (convex or spherical *)
increase your f ield of view. Remember that
vehicles or other objects will appear smaller
and fa rther away than when seen in a flat mir
ror. If you use t his mirro r to est imate distan
ces of following vehicles whe n cha ng ing
lanes, yo u co uld estimate incor rectly and
c ause an accident .
(D Note
-If the mir ror housing was moved by outs ide
fo rces (such as an impac t when maneuver
in g), y ou must use the powe r fo ldi ng func
tion to fold the mirro r all the way out . The
mirror housing must not be moved back in
to place by hand beca use this would impa ir
the function of the m irror mechanism.
- If you wash the ve hicle in an automatic car
wash, yo u m ust fold the exte rior m irrors i n
to reduce the risk of damage to the mirrors.

system, especially among people with asth ma or other respiratory conditions . Get
fresh air immediately by leaving the vehicle
or, if that is not possible, open windows a nd
