General recommendations
Why is your seat adjustment so important? The safety belts and the airbag system can only provide
maximum protection if the front seats are correctly
adjusted.
The re are various ways of adjusting the front seats to provide safe
and comfortable support for the driver and the front passenger.
Adjust your seat properly so that:
• you can easily and quickly reach all the switches and controls in
the instrument panel
• your body is properly supported thus reducing physical stress
and fatigue
• the safety belts and airbag system can offer maximum protec­
tion
~ page 212.
In the follow ing sections, you will see exactly how you can best
adjust your seats.
There are special regulations and instructions for installing a child safety seat on the front passenger's seat. Always follow the informa ­
tion regarding child safety provided in~
page 234, "C hild Safety".
& WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and all other passengers
can result in serious personal injury.
• Always keep your feet on the floor when the vehicle is in motion
- never put your feet on top of the instrument panel, out of the
window or on top of the seat cushion. This applies especially to
the passengers. If your seating position is incorrect, you increase
the risk of injury in the case of sudden braking or an accident. If

the airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect, this could
result in personal injury or even death.
• It is important for both the driver and front passenger to keep
a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cml between themselves and
the steering wheel and/or instrument panel. If you're sitting any closer than this, the airbag system cannot protect you properly. In
addition, the front seats and head restraints must be adjusted to
your body height so that they can give you maximum protection.
• Always try to keep as much distance as possible between your­
self and the steering wheel or instrument panel.
• Do not adjust the driver's or front passenger's seat while the
vehicle is moving. Your seat may move unexpectedly, causing
sudden loss of vehicle control and personal injury . If you adjust
your seat while the vehicle is moving, you are out of position. •
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe and relaxed
driving.
We recommend that you adjust the driver's seat in the
following manner:
Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so that you can
easily push the pedals to the floor while keeping your
knees slightly bent=>

- Adjust the seatback so that when you sit with your back
against the seatback, you can still grasp the top of the
steering wheel. ..,

- Position the head restraint according to the occupant's height ~
page 93. For maximum protection, the top of
the head restraint should be at least at eye level, prefer­
ably higher and ideally level with the top of the head
~ page 197, fig. 190.
& WARNING
Never place any objects in the driver's footwell. An object could
get into the pedal area and interfere with pedal function . In case
of sudden braking or an accident, you would not be able to brake
or accelerate. •
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost
position.
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is deploying, do not
sit any closer to the instrument panel than necessary and
always wear the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly. We recommend that you adjust the passenger's
seat in the following manner:
- Move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position
of t he fore and aft adjustment range~

- Bring the backrest up to an (a lmost) upright position . Do
not ride with the seat reclined.
- The ideal position for the head restraint is with the upper
edge of the restraint level with the top of your head
~ page 93. You should not lower the top of the restraint
below the level of your eyes. - Place your
feet on the floor in front of the passenger 's
seat. •

The operating logic for the switches corresponds to the
construction and function of the seat.

Th e switches to adjust the seats correspond to the layout, the
design and the function of the seat. The seats are adjusted by
moving the switches following this logic.

• Never adjust the driver's or front passenger's seat while the
vehicle is moving.
If you do this while the vehicle is moving, you
will be out of position. Always adjust the driver's or front
passenger's seat when the vehicle is not moving. _,,,

• Be careful when adjusting the seat height. Check to see that no
one is in the way, or serious injury could result!
• Because the seats can be electrically adjusted with the ignition
key removed, never leave children unattended in the vehicle. Unsu­
pervised use of the electric seat adjustments may cause serious
injury. •

& WARNING
• Never adjust the driver's or front passenger's seat while the
vehicle is moving. If you do this while the vehicle is moving, you
will be out of position. Always adjust the driver's or front passenger's seat when the vehicle is not moving.
• Be careful when adjusting the seat height. Check to see that no
one is in the way, or serious injury could result!
• Because the seats can be electrically adjusted with the ignition

Rear window shelf
You can place light articles of clothing on the rear
window shelf behind the seatback.
& WARNING
Whenever you are driving, do not leave any hard objects on the
rear window shelf or allow your pet to sit on the shelf. These could
become a hazard for vehicle occupants in the event of sudden
braking or a crash!
[ i] Tips
• A vent slot is located between the shelf and the rear window. Do
not block the vent with any items you may place on the rear window
shelf.
• Do not place bulky items on the rear window shelf as they would
restrict or block the driver's vision through the rear view mirror.•

Head restraints
Adjusting head restraints, front seats
The head restraints must be adjusted properly to provide
protection.

The head restraints on the front seats can be adjusted to
provide safe support to head and neck at the optimum
height. When optimally adjusted, the top of the restraint
should be level with the top of the head=>
page 197,
"Proper adjustment of head restraints".
Raising head restraint
-Grasp the side of the head restraint with both hands.
- Adjust the head restraints so that the top of the head
restraint is
at least level with your eyes or higher.
Lowering head restraint
-With one hand push down on the middle of the head
restraint.

Correctly adjusted head restraints and safety belts are an extremely
ef fective combination of safety features .•
Rear head restraints (outer seating positions )

Manually adjusted steering wheel
The height and reach of the steering wheel can be
adjusted.
First, adjust the driver 's seat correctly.

Move the steering wheel to the desired posit ion.
Push the lever against the steering column until it locks.
There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) between your chest and the
c en ter of th e steering wh eel. If you cannot sit more than 10 inches
( 25 cm) from the steering wheel, se e if adaptive equipment is avail ­
able to hel p you reach the pedals and inc rease the dis tance fro m the
steering whe el.

& WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjustment and improper seating
position can cause serious personal injury.
• Adjust the steering wheel column only when the vehicle is not
moving to prevent loss of vehicle control.
• Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel so that there is a
minimum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steering wheel=>
page 194, fig. 188 . If you cannot maintain this
minimum distance, the airbag system cannot protect you prop­
erly.
• If physical limitations prevent you from sitting 10 inches

cm) or more from the steering wheel, check with your authorized
Audi dealer to see if adaptive equipment is available .
• If the steering wheel is aligned with your face, the supple­
mental driver's airbag cannot provide as much protection in an
accident. Always make sure that the steering wheel is aligned with
your chest.
• Always hold the steering wheel with your hands at the 9 o'clock
and 3 o'clock positions to reduce the risk of personal injury if the
driver's airbag deploys.
• Never hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock position or with
your hands inside the steering wheel rim or on the steering wheel
hub. Holding the steering wheel the wrong way can cause serious
injuries to the hands, arms and head if the driver's airbag
deploys. •

Please remember -safety first!
This chapter contains important information, tips, suggestions and
warnings that you need to read and observe for your own safety, the safety of your passengers and others. We have summarized here
what you need to know about safety belts, airbags, child restraints as well as child safety. Your safety is for us
priority number 1. Always
observe the information and warnings in this section -for your own
safety as well as that of your passengers.
The information in this section applies to all model versions of your
vehicle. Some of the features described in this sections may be
standard equipment on some models, or may be optional equip ­
ment on others. If you are not sure, ask your au thorized Audi dealer .
& WARNING
• Always make sure that you follow the suggestions and heed
the WARNINGS in this Manual. It is in your interest and in the interest of your passengers.
• Always keep the complete Owner's Literature in your Audi
when you lend or sell your vehicle so that this important informa­
tion will always be available to the driver and passengers.
• Always keep the Owner's literature handy so that you can find
it easily if you have questions. •
Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant restraint
system and work together to help reduce the risk of injury
in a wide variety of accident situations.
Your safety and the safety of your passengers should not be left to
chance. Advances in technology have made a variety of features
available to help reduce the risk of injury in an accident. The
following is a list of just a few of the safety features in your Audi:
• sophisticated safety belts for driver and all passenger seating
positions,
• safety belt pretensioners,
• safety belt force limiters for the front seats,
• safety belt height adjustment systems for the front seats,
• automatic safety belt height adjustment for the rear seats,
• front airbags,
• side airbags in the front seats and outer rear seats *,
• side curtain airbags (SIDEGUARD),
• special LATCH anchorages for child restraints,
• head restraints for each seating position ,
• adjustable steering column.
These individual safety features, can work together as a system to
help protect you and your passengers in a wide range of accidents.
These features cannot work as a system if they are not always correctly adjusted and correctly used.
Safety is everybody's responsibility! •

Automati c safet y belt r etracto rs
Eve ry safety belt is equipped with an automatic belt retractor on the
shou lder belt. This feature locks the belt when the belt is pulled out
fast, during hard braking and in an accident . T he belt may also lock
when you drive up or down a steep hill or through a sharp curve .
During normal driving the belt lets you move free ly.
S afety belt pretensi oners
The safety belts are equipped with a belt pretensioner that helps to
tighten the safety belt and remove slack when the prete nsioner is
activat ed . The function of the pretension er is monitored by a
warning light=>
page 20.
Switchable locking feature
Every safety belt except the one on the d river seat is equipped with
a switchable locking feature that
must be used when the safety belt
is used to attach a ch ild sa fety sea t. Be sure to read the important
information about this feature=>
page 244.

• Safet y belts offer optimum prote ction onl y when the seat bac k

• Alway s make sure that the rear seat backrest to which the

the re ar center safety b elt is being us ed. If the b ackre st is not
se curely latched , the p asseng er will mo ve forw ard with the back ­
rest d uring sudde n br aking, in a sudden maneu ver and especi ally

• Never attach the safety belt to th e buckle for another seat.

& WARNING
Improperly positioned safety belts can cause serious personal
injury in an accident.
• Expectant mothers must always wear the lap portion of the
safety belt as low as possible across the pelvis and below the
rounding of the abdomen.
• Always read and heed all WARNINGS and other important infor­
mation

Unfastening safety belts
Unbuckle the safety belt with the red release button only
after the vehicle has stopped.

- Let the belt wind up on the retractor as you guide the belt
tongue to its stowed position.
& WARNING
Never unfasten safety belt while the vehicle is moving. Doing so
will increase your risk of being injured or killed. •

Adjusting safety belt height
With the aid of the safety belt height adjustment, the three
point safety belt strap routing can be fitted to the shoulder
area, according to body size.

- Pull the belt to make sure that the upper attachment is
properly engaged.
