Instruments and warning /indicator lights
- Press the"+" button to increase the brightness during the
hours of darkness.
- Press the"-" button to decrease the brightness during the
hours of dark ness.
A light sensor in the instrument cluster contro ls the illumination for
the instrument cluster, the center console and the displays. In a
br ight env ironment, using the buttons to change the br ightness has
no effect .
[ i ] Tips
The illumination for the instrument cluster lights up whenever you
switch on the ig nition with the vehicle head lights off. As the daylight
fades, the instrument cluster illum inat ion likewise d ims automati­
cally and w ill go out completely when the outside light is very low.
Th is feature is meant to remind you to sw itch on the headlights when
outside light conditions become poor. •

On-Board Diagnostic system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) in the instrument cluster
~ page 12, fig. 7 is part of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The warn ing/ind icator light illuminates when the ignition is switched
on and goes out after the engine starts and the idle has stabilized.
This indicat es that the MIL is working properly.
If the light does not go out after the engine is started, or illuminates
while you are driving , a malfunction may exist in the engine system.
If the light illuminates, the catalytic co nverter could be damaged .
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding sustained high
speeds and/or rapid accelerations) and have the condition corrected.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer .
If the light illuminates, the electronic speed limiter may also be
malfunctioning. For more information~
page 23, "Electronic speed
limiter".
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also cause the MIL light to
illuminate ~
page 273. •

Driver information display
On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components of your emission
control system. Each monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code. In case of a malfunction, the component
will be identified and the fault stored as a code in the control module
memory .
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a leak in the on-board fue l
vapor recovery system. If the light illuminates after a refuelling, stop
the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is properly closed
~ page 273 .
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stored data can only be
displayed using specia l diagnostic equipment (generic scan too l for
OBD).
In order to connect the special diagnostic equipment, push the plug
into the Data Link Connector (DLC). The DLC is located to the right of
the hood release~ fig . 15.
Your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service station can inter­
pret the code and perform the necessary repair.•
Electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped with tires that are rated for a
maximum speed of 130 mph (210 km/h). This is less than the
maximum speed of your vehicle . To reduce the risk of sudden tire
failure and loss of control if the vehicle is operated at excessive
speeds, your vehicle also has an electronic speed limiter. The elec­
tronic speed limiter prevents your vehicle from going faster than the
tire speed rating. For more information ~

If the engine con trol unit receives faulty vehicle roadspeed signals,
the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will illuminate. If this
occurs, contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for ass istance . .,.

Always observe the posted speed limits and adjust your speed to
s uit prevailing road, traffic and weather condition s. Never drive
your vehicle fa ster than the maximum speed rating of the tires
installed. •
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function o f ce rtain vehicle
featu res and components.
It simp ly makes su re t hese featu res and
components are work ing properly. The Auto-Check control works as
long as the ignition is on, as we ll as whe neve r th e veh icle is d riven.
If a component is malfu nctioning or if the need for an urgent repair
has been de tected, this wi ll appear in t he instrument clus ter display .
Yo u will also hea r an a udible warning to ne. The disp lays are colo r
coded in e ither red or yellow depend ing on their level of prior ity.
A red symbo l me ans
Danger , a yellow sym bol indic ates Warning . In
certain situations, information message for the driver appear in addi­
t ion to the red and yellow sym bols.
Function test: automatic transmission
T he Auto-Check Contro l w ill a uto matic ally perform a test each t ime
you switch on the ignit ion. W ith the selector lever in
P or N , the
f ollowin g messa ge a ppears in the displ ay :
When stationary apply foot brake while selecting gear .
When you a se lect a d ifferent gear (for example : R, D , etc .), the
message w ill disappea r and the Au to-C hec k function is d isp layed.
If there is a ma lfunction, then the malfunct ion message will appear
a bou t 15 seco nds after t he you st art the vehicle . At t he same time
you will hea r a wa rn ing tone .•

by pressing the [ CHECK] button .

Automat ic dimming function
The automatic dimming function is activated every tim e the ignition
is turned on. The g ree n indicator light is lit to indica te auto d imming
is active.
When d imming is act ivated, the inside mir ror w ill darke n
automati­
cally
in response to the amou nt of light striking the mirror (such as
head lights from rearward approaching vehicles). Even in d imming
mode, the mirror surface turns br ight when :
• the interio r light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirro r can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage . El ec trolyte fluid can irritate skin , eyes, and respira­
tory system .
• Repeated or p rolonged expo sur e to ele ctrolyte can cau se irrita­
tion to the resp iratory system, esp ecially among p eople with
asthma or other r espiratory condition s. G et fre sh air immediately
by le aving the vehicl e or, if that is not po ssible , open window s and
doors all the wa y.
• If ele ctrolyte g ets into the eye s, flush th em tho roughly with
large am ount s of clean water f or at lea st 15 minute s; medical
attention is re commended .
• If el ectrolyte contacts skin , flu sh affected area with clean
water for at l east 15 minut es and then wash aff ected area with
s oap and wat er; medical attention is rec ommend ed . Thoroughly
wash affected clothing and sho es before reu se.
• If swallowed and per son is c on sciou s, rinse mouth with water
fo r at le ast 15 minut es. Do not indu ce vomit ing unle ss instru cted
to do so by medical profe ssional. Get medical attenti on imm edi­
ate ly .

Liquid e lectrolyte leaked from a broken mirror g lass will damage any
plastic surfaces it comes in contact with. Clean up spi lled electrolyte
immediately with clear water and a sponge.
[I) Tips
• If you switch off the automatic dimming function on th e in side
mir ro r, automatic dimming of the outside mirrors will l ikewise be
di sabled .
• Check to make sure there are no objects preventing light from
reac hing t he i nside m irro r.

Remember that vehicles or other objects will ap pear smaller and
f art her away th an whe n seen in a fla t mi rror. If you use th is mi rro r to
estimate distances of follow ing ve hicles when chang ing lanes, you
could estimate i nco rre ct ly and ca u se an a cci dent .
• If the mir ror ho using is moved un inte ntionally (for examp le, whi le
par king yo ur veh icle), then you m ust fir st f old the mir ror ele ctrically.
Do not read just the mirro r hous ing manually. You could damage the
mot or w hic h con trols the mi rror .
[ i ] Tips
If the re should be a m alfu nction in the ele ct ric al sys tem, you can st ill
adjust the outs ide mirrors by pressing the edge of the m irror. •

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
T he ou tside mir rors are dimmed toge ther w it h t he a utoma tic
dimming of the ins ide mirror . When the ignition is sw itched on, t he
m irrors da rken a utomat ica lly depend ing on the light stri king them
(e .g . headlights from the r ea r) .
When the interio r light ing is sw itched on and when reverse gear is
engaged , the mi rrors are switche d back to their or ig inal b rightness
(not d immed).
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage. Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes, and respira­ tory system.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people w ith
& WARNING (co ntinued )
asthma o r other respiratory conditions . Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not po ssible, open window s and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water fo r at least 15 minutes; medical
attention i s recommended.
• If electrolyte contacts skin , flush affected area with clean
water for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area w ith
soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Thoroughly
wash affected clothing and shoes before reuse.
• If swallowed and person is conscious, rinse mouth with water
for at least 15 minutes. Do not induce vomiting unle ss instructed
to do so by medical professional. Get medical attention immedi·
ately.

Climate control
Description
The air conditioner is fully automatic and is designed to
maintain a comfortable and uniform climate inside the
vehicle.
We recommend the following settings:
- Set the temperature to 75 °F (+23 °C).
- Press the [AUTO] button.
With this setting, you attain maximum comfort in the least amount
of time. Change this setting , as desired, to meet your personal needs.
The climate controls are a combination of heating, ventilation and cooling systems, which automatically reduce humidity and cool the
air inside your vehicle.
The air temperature, air flow and air distribution are automatically regulated to achieve and maintain the desired passenger compart­
ment temperature as quickly as possible .
The system automatically compensates for changes in outside
temperature and for the intensity of the sunlight entering the
vehicle. We recommend you use the
Automatic mode=> page 99 for
year-round comfort .
Please note the following:
Turn on the air conditioner to reduce humidity in the vehicle. This also
prevents the windows from fogging up .
When the outside temperature is high and the air is very humid,
condensation from the evaporator may drip under the vehicle. This is
normal and does not indicate a leak. If the outside temperature
is low, the fan normally only switches to a
higher speed once the engine coolant has warmed up sufficiently .
The air conditioner temporarily switches off when you drive off from
a standstill using full throttle to save engine power.
The compressor also switches off if the coolant temperature is too
high, so that the engine can be adequately cooled under extreme
loads.
Air pollutants filter
The air pollutants filter (a combined particle filter and activated char­
coal filter) reduces or prevents outside air pollution (dust, or pollen)
from entering the vehicle. The air is also filtered in air recirculation
mode.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the intervals specified in
your Warranty
& Maintenance booklet, so that the air conditioner can
properly work .
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high air pollution, the filter
may need to be changed more frequently than specified in your Audi
Warranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask your authorized
Audi Service Advisor for advice .
Key coded settings
The air conditioner settings selected are automatically stored and
assigned to the key being used. When the vehicle is started, the air
conditioner automatically selects the settings assigned to that key.
This way every driver will maintain his/her own personal settings and
does not have to reset them manually.
If a different driver uses your key and changes the air conditioner
settings, the latest adjustments will erase and replace the settings
you have stored . _.,

air conditioning controls.

The left display indicates the temperat ure selected for the driver's
side, the righ t display ind icates the temperature se lected for the
passenger's side.

• Residual heat: With the ignition t urned off, you can activate the
res idua l heat f unct ion by p ress ing the [
ON/OFF] button. The residua l
heat from the coo lant can be used to heat the vehicle i nterior. The
res idual heat function is t urned off automat ica lly afte r 30 m inutes .
• Synchronizing climate control: By pressing and ho ld ing the
cont rol knob on t he d river's side, the tempera ture setti ng on the
dr iver's side can be switc hed to the passe nger's side, and vice ve rsa.

• Do not block or tape
over the grille on the contro ls. Measur ing
sensors a re located be hind it .•

Automatic mod e [AUTO j
The automatic mode is the standard setting for all
seasons .
- Select temperature between 60 °F (+16 °C) and 84 °F
(+28 °().
- Press the [AUTO] button.
Automatic operation ensures constant temperatures in the interior
and dehumidifies the air inside the vehicle. Air temperature, vol ume
and distribution are controlled automatically to reach or maintain the
desired interior temperature as quickly as possib le . Fl uctuations in
exterior temperature and the effects of temperature from the pos i­
tion of the sun are compensated for automatically.
T his operating mode works only in the adjustable temperature range,
from 60
°F ( + 16 °() to 84 °F (+28 °(). If a temperature below 60 °F
(+ 16 °() is selected , LO appea rs in the display. At tempe rat ures above
84
°F (+28 °(), H I is displayed. A t both extreme set tings, climate
control runs continuously at max imum cool ing or heat ing power.
There is no temperature regulation .•

Turning the air conditioning off
- Press the [ ON/OFF] button to switch the air conditioning
off and to block the air supply from the outside.
The air conditioner turns back on when you press the t e m pe rat ure

With the ignition turned off, you can activate the residua l heat func­
tion by pressing the [ ON/OFF) button. The residual heat from the
coo lant can be used to heat the vehicle interio r. •
Swi tching air cooling on /off [AC]
Switching off the compressor which operates the air
cooling system saves fuel.
- To switch the air cooling system on/off, press the [AC]
button.
When the air cooling system is switched on, the diode in the button
is lit and the heating and ventilation are regulated automat ically .
Please note that the interior temperature cannot be lower than the
outs ide temperature when the air cooling system is switched off. The
blower does not cool or dehumidify the air in the interior. It is there­
fore possible that the windows mist up. •
Setting the temperature
Separate temperatures can be selected for the driver's
and front passenger's side.
Rotate the regulator to the left to reduce the tempera­
ture, or to the right to increase the temperature .
The selected temperature appears on the climate control disp lay. The
temperature setting will also appear for a few seconds in the MMI
display. •

Fan @
The automatically preset fan speed can be reduced or
increased.
- Press the [ ae] button .
- Rotate the regulator to the desired fan speed.
The climate control system automatically regulates fan speed
depending on inte rior temperatu re . You can adjust the vo lume of air
produced by the fan to your own requirements.
T he fan speed setting wi ll appear for a few seconds in the MM I
display .
rn Tips
It is possible that the fan speed may change automatically . This
occurs to ens ure that the desired temperature setting is reached as
quickly as possib le. •
Air distribution [~)
The automatically controlled air distribution can be
changed manually .
-Press the [-..:o] button .
Rotate the regulator to the desired setting.
You can adjust the air d istr ibut ion so that air flows from specific
vents. In position
:0 air flows only to the windows, in position ;J, it
flows to the drive r o r passenger, and in pos it ion
~ it flows to the
footwe ll. There are additional combinations avai lable to adjust air
distribution as needed.
To regu late air d istribut ion automatically, switch to [AUTO] . The air distribution setting w
ill appear for a few seconds in the MMI
display .•
Defrosting (@]
The windshield and side windows are rapidly defrosted or
defogged.
- Press the[@] button to turn on the defroster.
- Press the[@] button again, or press the[AUTO] button to
turn it off.
T emperat ure is controlled a utomatically. The maximum amount of
air flows mainly from the vents below the windsh ield .•
Manual air circulation [,:::.g, )
Air recirculation prevents exhaust fumes or other pollu­
tion from entering the vehicle.
Turning on ai r recirculation
- Press the I~] button ~ &
Turning off air recirculation
Press the~ button again, or
press the [AUTO] button, or
- press the I@] button .
In the air recirculation mode, the air in the passenger compartment
is recirc ul ated and fi ltered to prevent exhaust fumes and other pollu­
tion from entering the veh icle. We recommend that you use the
man ual air rec irculat ion under the following conditions :
