A WARNING
- Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never turn off the eng ine unti l the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop .
- The brake booster and power steer ing
only work when the engine is running . If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot stee r and brake as you usua l­
ly wou ld, this could lead to crashes and
ser ious injur ies.
- Avoid high engine rpm, fu ll throttle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
reached operating temperat ure - ot her­
wise yo u risk eng ine dam age.
- The eng ine ca nnot be started by pushing
or tow ing the veh icle.

- After a cold engine is sta rted, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be ­
ca use oil p ress ure mus t fi rs t bu ild up in
the hyd raulic valve adjus ters. This is nor ­
mal and not a ca use for concern .

Steering lock
The steeri ng locks when you tur n the engine
off using the
I S TART ENGINE STOP I button
and open the driver's door. The locked steer­
i ng helps p revent vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, t he engine can be switc hed off
with the se lector lever in the R or D/S posi ­
tion. The eng ine stops if you press the
I S TART ENGI NE STOP I button at speeds below
6 mph (10 km/ h) .
A WARNING
- Never turn off t he engine un til the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop .
- T he b rake boos ter and power stee ring

the engine is off, yo u have to use more

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking broke replaces
the hand broke.

pedal and press the switch(®) at the same
time to release the parking brake. The indi­
cator light in the switch goes out.
Your veh icle is equipped w ith an electrome­
chanica l park ing brake. The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
un intentiona lly and rep laces the hand brake.
I n addition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanica l
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.

When starting from rest
-The integral start ing assist helps you when
driving by automatically re leasing the park­
ing brake

- When start ing on inclines, the starting as­
sist p revents the vehicle from unintentiona l­
ly rolling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not re leased until sufficient
driving force has been built up at the
wheels.
Emergency brake function

Indicator lights

A WARNING
Do not press the accelerator pedal inadver­
tently if the veh icle is stationary but the
engine is running and a gear is selected .
Otherwise the vehicle w ill start to move
imm ediately and could result in a crash.

Switching the ignition automatically
To prevent the battery from draining, the igni­
tion will switch off
automatically when all of
the following conditions have been met:
- The vehicle has already been driven .
- The engine has been turned off by the Start-
Stop-System*.
- The driver's door is opened .
- The driver's seat belt is removed.
- The bra ke peda l is not pressed down.
- The vehicle is stationary.
In this case, the activated low beam will be re­
placed by the side marker lights. The side
marker lights will switch off after approx i­
mately 30 minutes or when you lock the vehi­
cle .
If the Start-Stop System has
not turned off
the engine or if you have switched the Start­
Stop system off manually, the ignition wil l
not
be automatically switched off and the engine
will continue to run ~,& .

If you shift into the D, N or S positions af­
ter shifting into reverse, the vehicle must
be driven faster than 6 mph (10 km/h) in
order for the engine to switch off again .

This message appears when spec ific condi­
tions are not met during a stop phase and the
Start-Stop-System will
not be able to restart
the engine . If the Dor R selector lever posi­
tions were engaged, P will be selected auto­
matically. The engine must be started with
the
I START ENGINE STOP! button.
Start-Stop system: System fault! Function
unavailable
There is a malfunction in the Start-Stop-Sys­
tem . Drive the vehicle to an authorized repair
facility for servicing as soon as possible to cor­
rect the malfunction.

- For safety reasons, the cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traff ic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, grave l, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -risk of acc ident .
- Turn off the cruise control temporari ly
when entering turn lanes, highway exit lanes or in const ruction zones .
- Please note that inadvertent ly "rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerato r peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because t he cr uise con trol is overr idden
by the driver's a cce le rat ion.
- If a brake system malfunction such as
overheat ing occurs when the cruise con­
t ro l system is sw itche d on, t he braking
f unction in the system may be switched
off. The other cr uise control f unctions re ­
main active as long as the indicator light

Based on the symbols in the d isplay, you can
determine if the system is maintaining a dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead and what that d is­
tance is.
No vehicle -No veh icle ahead was detected .
White vehicle -A vehicle ahead was detected.
Red vehicle -Prompt for the driver to take ac­
tion

Both arrow s on the scale© indicate the dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead. No arrow appears
when the vehicle is on an open road and there
is no object ahead . If an object is detected
ahead , the arrow moves on the scale . The
green zone on the scale shows the stored
distance. For information on changing the
stored distance, refer to
c::> page 88 . If the
distance selected is too close or may soon be­
come too close, the arrows move into the red
zone on the sca le .
A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and serious personal injur ies .
- Pressing the
!SET ! button when driv ing at
speeds below
20 mph (30 km/h), will au­
tomatically accelerate the vehicle to
20
mph (30 km/h), which is the minimum
speed that can be set.
(D Tips
-If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- You cannot switch the Electronic Stabili­
zation Control (ESC) to the SPORT mode
when adaptive cruise control is switched
on.

tion" uses an infrared camera to monitor the
area in front of your vehicle at night. Within
the limits of the system , it can display objects
up to about 1000 feet (300 meters) away. The

camera is shown in the instrument cluster dis­
play

Automatic Transmission

Introduction

The automat ic transm iss ion is controlled elec­
tronically . The transmiss ion ups hifts or down­
shifts automatically depend ing o n which drive
p rog ram is se lect ed.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
tra nsmission selects the most econom ica l
d riving mode .
It will then change up early and
de lay the downshifts to g ive bette r fu el econ­
omy.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode after a k ick- down or when the drive r uses a
sporty driving style ch aracte rized by quick ac­
celerator peda l movements, heavy ac celera­
tion, frequent ch anges in speed and traveling
at the maximum spee d.
I f desired, the drive r can a lso se lect the gears
manually ( tiptronic mode ) ¢ page 111.
Various automat ic transm issions may be in ­
stalled, depend ing o n the mode l:
multitronic transmi ssion
The mult itron ic transm ission is a continuously
variable transmission. Power is transferred us­ i n g a mu ltidisk clutch . In contrast to conven­
tional automat ic transm iss ions using shift ing
ope rations, the transmiss ion ratio in the con­
tinuously va riab le transm iss io n is changed
con tinuously. Th is op timi zes the com fort level
a nd co nserves fuel.
S tronic transmission
The S tronic is a dual -clutch transmission .
P owe r is transfe rred using two clutches that
wo rk ind ependen tly from one a nother. They
r e pl ace the tor qu e conve rter u sed in co nven­
tional a utoma tic transm iss io ns an d allow t he
ve hicl e to accelerate without a no ticeable in ­
ter ruption in traction.

When the ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
m inate when the selecto r lever is moved into
R. .,.

The Automatic Shift Lock only functions when
the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below
1 mph (2 km/h).
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the
Automatic Shift Lock is automatically deacti­
vated in the N position.
A time delay element prevents the se lector
l eve r from locking when it is moved thro ugh
the N position (going from R to 0/5). The lock­
ing e lement will lock the selector lever if the
lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
prox imately 2 second, without the brake ped­
al being pressed.
R elease button
The release button on the selector lever pre ­
vents the lever from being accidenta lly shifted
into certain positions. Depending on the direc­
tion of the shift, the selector lever locks at d if­
ferent positions. The positions are h ighlighted
in the illustration
¢ fig . 113 .

Homelink
Universal remote
control
General information
Applies to vehicles: with Homelink u nive rsal remote con­
tro l
The HomeLink universal remote control can
be programmed with hand-held transmitters
from existing equipment.
With Homelink, you can control devices such
as the garage door, security systems, house
lights, etc. comfortably from the inside of you
vehicle.
Homelink makes it possible for you to replace
three different remote controls from devices in your home with one universal remote . Th is
feature works for most garage door and exte­
rior door motor signals. Programming the in­
d iv idual remo te control fo r your remote con ­
trol takes p lace near the center of the radiator
grille. There is a control module attached at
this location .
A one-t ime programm ing of the sensor mus t
be performed before you are able to use sys­
tems w ith Homelink.
A WARNING
- Never use the Homelink transmitter
with any garage door opener that does
have not the safety stop and reverse fea­
ture as requ ired by federal safety stand­
ards. Th is includes any garage door open­
er model manufactured before April 1, 1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards . Us ing a garage doo r
opener witho ut these fea tures increases
risk of serious injury or death.
- For safety reasons never release the
parking brake or start the engine while
anyone is standing in front of the vehicle .
- A garage door or an estate gate may
sometimes be set in motion when the Homelink remote control is being pro­
grammed. If the device is repeatedly ac­
tivated, this can overstrain motor and
damage its electrical components -an
overheated motor is a fire hazard!
- To avo id possible injuries or property
damage, please always make absolutely
certa in that no persons or objects are lo­
cated in the range of motion of any
equ ipment being operated.
