Child safety lock for
the rear doors
The power child safety lock locks the rear win­
dows and prevent the rear doors from being
opened from the inside.

The following features are switched off:
- The interior door handles in the rear doors,
- The power windows in the rear doors .
In order to activate the child safety lock on
the left and the right side, press the two safe­
ty buttons[!] in succession.

All power window switches are provided with
a two-po sition function :
Opening the windows
• Press the switc h to the fir st sto p and hold it
until the window re aches the desired posi­
tion.

Closing the windows
• Pull the sw itch to the fir st stop and hold it
until the window reaches the desired posi­
tion .

- When you leave you r vehicle -even if on ­
ly briefly -always take the ignition key
wit h you . This applies particularly when
children remain in the vehicle. Otherwise
the children could start the engine or op­
erate electrical equipment (e.g. power
windows). The power windows are func­
tional unt il the drive r's door or passeng­
er 's doo r ha s been opened.
- Be careful when clos ing the w indows .
Chec k to see that no o ne is in the way, or
serio us inju ry co uld resu lt!
- When lock ing the vehicle from outside,
the vehicle mu st be u noccupied since the
windows can no longer be opened in an
emergency .
{1) Tips
After the ignition has been switched off,
the windows can still be opened o r closed
fo r a bout 10 m inu tes. The power windows
are not switched off until the driver 's doo r
or passenger 's door has been opened.

• To close the sunroof completely, press the
switch forward briefly to the second level
¢ A, .
• To select an intermediate position, press/
pull the switch forward/back to the first lev­
el until the desired position is reached .
The sun shade can be opened and closed by
hand when the sunroof is closed. The solar
protection opens automatically when the sun­
roof opens.
You can still close or open the sunroof for up
to ten minutes after you have switched the ig­
nition
off. The switch is deactivated once the
driver's or front passenger's door is opened.
A WARNING
Pay careful attention when clos ing the
sliding/tilting sunroof- otherwise serious
inju ry could result! A lways take the key
w ith you when leaving the vehicle.
@ Note
-
Always close your sliding/tilting sunroof
when leaving your vehicle. Sudden rain can
cause damage to the inte rior equipment of
your veh icle, particularly the electronic
equipment.
(D Tips
The sliding/tilting sunroof will only open
at temperatures above -4°F (-20°().
Emergency closing of the sliding/tilting
sunroof
If the sunroof detects an object in its path
when it is closing, it will open again automati­
cally . In this case, you can close the roof with
the power emergency closing function.
• Within five seconds after the sunroof opens
automatically, pull the sw itch until the roof
closes .

-Automatic headlights are only intended
to assist the driver . They do not relieve
the driver of his responsibility to check
the headlights and to turn them on man­
ually according to the current light and
visibility conditions. For example, fog
cannot be detected by the light sensors.
So always switch on the headlights
io
under these weather conditions and
when driving in the dark.
- Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other motorists. Always turn on
theheadlightssothatyoucanseeahead and so that others can see your car from
the back .
- Please observe legal regulations when
using the lighting systems described .
(D Note
The rear fog lights should only be turned
on in accordance with traffic regulation, as
the lights are bright for following traffic.
{D) Tips
- The light sensor* for automatic head­
light range control* is located in the rear
view mirror mount . You should therefore
not apply any stickers to the windshield
in this area in order to prevent malfunc­
tions or failures .
- In the event of a light sensor malfunc ­
tion, the driver is notified in the instru­
ment cluster display ~
page 23 .
-You will hear a warning tone if you open
the driver door when the exterior lights
are switched on.
- In cool or damp weather, the inside of
the headlights, turn signals and tail lights can fog over due to the tempera­
ture difference between the inside and
outside. They will clear shortly after
switching them on. This does not affect
the service life of the lighting.
Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher makes other motorists
aware that you or your vehicle are in an emer­
gency situation .

When the emergency flasher is on, all four
turn signals blink at the same time. The turn

~ blink likewise. The emergen­
cy flashers also work when the ignition is
turned off.
The emergency flashers will turn on automati­
cally if you are in an accident where the airbag
has deployed.
@ Tips
You should turn on the emergency flashers
when:
- you are the last vehicle standing in a traf­
fic jam so that any other vehicles coming
can see you, or when
- your vehicle has broken down or you are
in an emergency situation, or when
-your vehicle is being towed by a tow
truck or if you are towing another vehicle
behind you.
Adjusting the exterior lighting
The settings ore adjusted in the MMI.

A WARNING
Do not use the high beam or headlight
flasher if you know that these could blind
oncoming traffic.

The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ign it ion is
sw itched on and the vehicle lig hts are
turned off. As the daylight fades, the illu­
m ination of the dials likewise dims auto­
mat ically and w ill go out comp lete ly when
the o utside lig ht is ve ry low. This fea ture is
meant to remi nd you t o swit ch on the
headl igh ts when o utside light condi tions
become poor.

protect ion. The sun s hade can only be ex­
tended/retracted again after a brief wait­ ing period.
- The rear window sun shade only func­
tions when the vehicle i nterior is warmer

Move the windshield wiper lever to the corre­
sponding pos ition:
@ - Windshie ld wipers off
(I) -Rain sensor mode . The windshield w ipers
switch on once the vehicle speed exceeds ap­
proximately 2 mph (4 km/h) and it is raining.
The higher the rain sensor sens itivity is se t
(switch @to the right), the earlier the wind­
shield wipers react to moisture on the wind­
shie ld. You can deact ivate rain sensor mode in
the MMI, which w ill then activate intermi ttent
mode. Selec t:

> Off . In intermittent mode, you can
adjust the interval time using the switch @.
@-Slow wiping
@-Fast wiping
© -Single wipe. If you hold the lever in this
posi tion longer, the wipers sw itch from slow
wiping to fast wip ing .
® - Clean the windshield . The wipers wipe
one time after several seconds of driv ing to
remove water drop le ts. You can switch this
function off by mov ing the lever to position ®
within 10 seconds after the afterw ipe . The af­
terw ipe fun ct ion is react ivated the next time
you swit ch the ig nition on .
Cleaning the headlights* . The headlight wash­
e r system* operates only when the headlights
are on . If you move the lever to pos ition ®, the headlights and the night vision assistant
camera* are washed in intervals .
.&_ WARNING
-
-The rain sensor is only designed to assist
and support the driver.
It remains entire­
ly t he driver's responsibility to monitor
outside weather cond itions and to man­
ually activate the wipe rs as soon as rain
or drizzle reduces v isibility through the
windshie ld.
- The windsh ield must no t be treated w ith
wate r-repellent mate rials. They can in­
crease glare unde r poo r vis ibility condi ­
tions such as wetness, d arkness, or when
the sun is low on the hor izon. In addi­
tion, they can cause the w indshield w ip­
ers to chatter .
- Prope rly f unctioning windshield wiper
b lades are required for a clear view and
safe driving

- In the case of frost, check whethe r th e
windshield wiper blades are frozen to
the windsh ield. Switching on the wind­
shield wipers can damage the wiper
blades!
- Pr ior to us ing a car wash, the w indshield
w iper system must be sw itched off ( lever
in posit ion @). Th is he lps to prevent un­
intentional switching on and damage to
the winds hield wiper system.
- Do not use the w ipers to clear a frosted
w indow . Us ing the wipers as a conven­
ient ice scrape r will destroy the wipe r
blades .
(D Tips
-The windshie ld w ipers are switched off
w hen the ignit ion is off . Activate the
w indshield wipers after the ign ition is
switched back on by moving the w ind­
shield wiper lever to any position.
- Worn or dirty windshield wipe r blades
result in streaking. This can affect the

rain sensor function. Check your
windshield wiper b lades regularly.
- The washer fluid nozzles of the wind­
sh ield washer system are heated at low
temperatures when the ignit ion is on .
- When stopping temporarily, e .g . at a
traffic light , the set speed of the wind­
shield wipers is automatically red uced by
one speed.
Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the wind shield wiper bl ades when they
begin to leafe streaks .
~ Place the windshield wiper arms in the serv ­
ice position . Re fer to
q page 49 .
~ Use a soft clo th and gl ass cleaner to clean
the windsh ield w iper blades .
A WARNING
Dirty windshie ld w iper blades can impa ir

- The windshie ld w iper blades must on ly
be folded away when i n the service posi­
t ion! Otherwise, yo u ris k damaging the
paint on the hood o r the windshie ld wip­
er motor.
- Yo u should not move your vehicle or
press the windsh ield wiper lever when
the wiper arms are folded away from the
windshield. The windshield wipers wou ld
move back into their original position
and could damage the hood and wind­
shield.
- To help prevent damage to the w iper sys­
tem, always loosen blades wh ich are fro­
zen to the windshield before operating
w ipers .
- To help prevent damage to wiper blades,
do not use gasoline, kerosene, paint
thinne r, or other solvents on o r near the
w iper blades.

- To he lp prevent damage to the wiper
arms or other components, do not at­
tempt to move the wipers by hand .
@ Tips
-Commercial hot waxes applied by auto ­
matic car washes affect the cleanability
of the windshield .
- You can a lso use the service position, for
example, if you want to protect the
windshield from icing by using a cover .
- You cannot activate the service position
when the hood is open.
Mirrors
Adjusting the exterior mirrors

Turn the knob to the desired position :
Q/P -In t his position, you can adjust the
driver's and front passenger's exter ior mirrors
by turning the knob in the des ired direction.
Ciiil-The mirrors are heated depending on the
outside temperature.
8 -The exterior mirrors fo ld in. In the MMI,
you can select if the mirrors fold in automati­ cally when you lock the vehicle
c> page 35 .
Tilt function for the passenger's mirror
To help you see the curb when backing into a
parking space, the surface of the mirror tilts
slightly . The knob must be in the P position
for this to happen .
You can adjust the tilted mirror surface by turning the knob in the desired direction .
When you move out of reverse and into anoth- er gear,
the new mirror position is sto red and
assigned to the key you are using.
T he m irror goes back into its orig inal position
once you drive forward fas ter than 9 mph (15
km/h) or switch the ignition off.
A WARNING
-Curved (i.e . convex) m irror surfaces in­
crease your fie ld of view. Remember that
vehicles or other objects will appear smaller and farther away t han when seen
in a flat mirror . If you use th is m irror to
estimate distances of following vehicles
when changing lanes, you could estimate
incor rectly and cause an accident.
(D Note
-
-If the m irror housing is moved uninten­
tionally (for examp le, while parking your
vehicle), then you must first fold the mir­ ror electrically. Do not readjust the mir­
ror housing manually. You could damage
the motor which controls the mirror.
-If you wash the vehicle in an automatic
car was h, you must fold the exter ior mir­
rors in to reduce the risk of damage to
the mir rors . Never fold power folding ex­
terior mirrors * by hand. Only fo ld them
in and out using the power controls.
@ Tips
- The exterior mirror settings are stored
w ith the memory function* ¢page
56.
-If there is a malfunction in the electrical
system, you can sti ll adjust the exterior
mirrors by pressing the edge of the mir­
ror.

turns on. The rearview and exterior mirrors
dim automatically when light shines on
them, for example from headlights on ave­
hicle to the rear.
&_ WARNING
Electrolyte flu id can leak from automatic
dimming mirrors if the glass is broken.
Ele ctrolyte fl uid can irritate s kin, eyes and
respi ratory system.
- Repeated or prolonged exposure to elec­
tr olyte can cause ir ritation to the resp ira­
tory syste m, espec ially among people
with asthma or othe r respiratory cond i­
tions. Get fres h ai r i mmedia tely by leav ­
ing the vehicle or, if that is not possible,
open windows and doors all the way.
- If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush
them thoro ughly with large amounts of
clean water for at least 15 m in utes;
med ica l attent ion is recommended.
- If electrolyte contacts sk in , flush affect­
ed area with clean water for at least 15
minutes and then wash affected area
w ith soap and water; medical attention
is recommended. T ho roughly wash af­
f e cted clothing and sho es befor e reuse.

- If swallowed and perso n is conscious,
rinse mouth with water for at least 15
m inutes. Do not induce vomiting unless
instructed to do so by med ica l professio­
nal. Get medical attention immediately .

Liqu id e lectrolyte leaking from broken m ir­
ror glass w ill damage any plastic surfaces
i t comes in contact wit h. Clea n up spilled
electrolyte immed iately w it h clean water
and a sponge.
@ Tips
- Switching off the dimming function of
the inside rear view mir ro r also deacti­
vates the automatic d imming function of
t he ex ter ior mirro rs.
- T he automatic dimming m irrors do not
dim when the inte rior lighting is tu rned
on or the reve rse gear i s sele cted.
- Automatic d imm ing fo r th e mirror only
operates proper ly if the light s trik in g the
inside m irror is not hin dered in any way.

Seats and storage
General recommen­
dations
Why is your seat adjustment so
important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjust ing the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
you r seat prope rly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
-your body is prope rly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and a irbag system can offer
maximum protection ¢
page 147.
In the following sec tions, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust you r seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for insta lling a child seat on the front pas­
senger's seat. Always fo llow the information
regarding ch ild safety provided in
q page 173, Child Safety .
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the dr iver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal in jury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion . Th is applies especially to the passen­
gers . If your seating position is incorrect,
yo u increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an a ccident. If th e
a ir bag infla tes and the se ating position
is inco rre ct, this could resul t in personal
injury o r even death.
- It is import ant for both the driver an d
front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the a irbag system can­
not protect you properly . In addition, the
front seats and head restraints must be adjusted to your body height so that they
can give you max imum protect ion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the steer­
ing wheel o r inst rument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's o r front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your sea t may move unexpected ly, caus­
ing sudden loss of vehicle cont rol and
personal injury . If yo u adjust yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, yo u are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat '
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend tha t you adjus t the dr iver's
seat in the fo llowing manner :
.,. Adjust t he seat in fore and aft direction so
t ha t you can eas ily push the peda ls to the
floor w hile keeping your knees sl igh tly bent

.. Adjust the backrest so that when you sit
w ith your back against t he backrest, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.. Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge
is as even as poss ible with the top of your
head . If that is not poss ible , try to adjust
t he head restraint so that it is as close to
t his pos it ion as possib le

A WARNING "--
Neve r place any objects in the dr iver's foot-
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal function. In
case of sudden braking or an acc ident, you
