• To reach the 12 Vo lt socket in the l uggage com-

There are additional 12 Volt socket in the center
console under the center armrest* and in the rear
c:> fig. 63.
The 12-volt sockets can be used for electrical ac ­
cessories. T he power usage must not exceed
120 watts .
_& WARNING
The sockets and the electrical accesso ries con­
nected to them operate only when the igni­
t ion is switched on. Incorrect usage can lead
to serious injuries or burns. To reduce the risk
of injuries, never leave chi ldren unattended in
the vehicle with the veh icle key.
(D Note
- To reduce the risk of damage to the vehicle
electr ica l system, never attempt to charge
the ve hicle battery by connecting accesso­
ries that provide power, such as solar pane ls

or battery chargers, to the 12 Volt sockets
or the cigarette lighter.
- T o reduce the risk of damage to the sockets,
only use plugs that fit correctly .

Driving
-After the engine has been sw itched off, the
rad iator fan can continue to run for up to 10
minutes - even with the ign ition switched
off . It ca n also switch on again after some
t ime if the coolant temperature rises as the
r esult of a heat buildup o r if the eng ine is
hot and the eng ine compartme nt is addi­
ti onal ly he ated by the su n's rays.
@ Note
Do not stop the engine immed iate ly after
hard o r ex tended d riving. Keep the engine
running for app rox im ately two m inutes to
prevent exces sive hea t build-up.
Messages
Turn off ignition before leaving car
T his message appe ars and a warn ing tone so unds
if you o pen the d river's door when the ignition is
sw itche d on .
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appea rs if you do not press the
brake pedal whe n starting the engine.
fll Is key in the vehicle?
T his indi cato r light turn s on and t his mess age ap­
pea rs i f the ig nition key was removed from the
ve hicle when t he engine was ru nning. If the igni ­
tion key is no longer in the veh icle, yo u can not
switch on the ignition or start the engine once
you stop it. You also cannot lock the vehicle from
the outside.
Shift to P , otherwise vehicle can roll away .
Doors do not lock if le ver is n ot in P.
This message appears for safety reasons if the
transmission is not in the P pos it ion when you
sw itch the ignition off . Move the selector lever to
the P position. Otherwise the vehicle is not pro­
tected from rolling and it ca nnot be locked.

This message appears if the d river 's door is
opened wh ile the ignition is switc hed on and the
selector lever is not in the P po sition . Move the

Starting the engine when there is a
malfunction
It may not be possible to start the engine under
certain circumstances, for example if the battery
in the vehicle key is drained, if interference is af­
fected the key or if there is a system malfunc ­
tion.

Driving
-The ignition will turn off if you press the
I STAR T ENGINE STOP! button during a stop
phase. The needle in the tachometer moves
into the
OFF position.
General information
Applies to veh icles: with Start-Stop-System
Th e standard Start-Stop mode con be canceled
for different system-related reasons.

Engine does not switch off
Before and during each stop phase, the system
checks if certain conditions have been met. For
example, the engine will not switch
off in the fol­
lowing situations :
- The engine has not reached the minimum re­
quired temperature for Start-Stop mode.
- The interior temperature selected by the A/C
system has not been reached.
- The outside temperature is extremely high/low.
- The windshield is being defrosted®.
- The parking system* is be switched on.
- The battery charge level is too low.
- The steering wheel is turned at a sharp angle or
is moving .
- After engaging the reverse gear .
- On sharp inclines.
@j also appears in the instrument cluster dis­
play.
Engine automatically restarts
The standard Start-Stop mode will be canceled
during a stop phase in the following situations .
The engine restarts without any action by the
driver.

- The vehicle rolls, for example while on a slope.
- The interior temperature varies from the tem-
perature selected in the A/C system.
- The windshield is being defrosted®.
- The brake pedal is pressed several times in a
row.
- The battery charge level becomes too low.
- High power consumption.
The engine can turn
off again when the condi­
tions for Start-Stop mode are met.
Ignition is switched off automatically
To prevent the battery from draining, the igni­
tion
will switch off automatically under the fol·
lowing conditions:
- The vehicle has already been driven.
- The Start-Stop-System has stopped the engine.
- The driver's door is opened.
- The driver's safety belt is removed.
- The brake pedal is not pressed down .
- The vehicle is stationary.
In this case, the activated low beam is replaced
by the parking light. The parking lights will
switch
off after approximately 30 minutes or
when you lock the vehicle.
If the Start-Stop-System has not turned off the
engine or if you have switched the Start-Stop­
System
off manually, the ignition will not be au­
tomatically switched
off and the engine will con­
tinue to run

A WARNING
Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces, because this increases the risk of as­
phyxiation .
(D Tips
-If you shift into the D or N position after
shifting into reverse, the vehicle must be
driven faster than 6 mph (10 km/h) in order
for the engine to switch off again .

Driver messages
App lies to vehicles: with Audi side assist
If side ass ist switches off by itself, the LED in the
button turns off and a message will appear in the

Audi side assist not available: sensor blocked
T he radar senso rs ' vision is affected. Do not cover
the area in front of the senso rs with bike wheels,
sticke rs, dirt or other ob jects . Clean the area in
front of the senso rs, if necessary

cause there is a malfunction (for exam ple, the

The system cannot guarantee that it will detect
ve hicles co rrectly and it is switched off. The sen ­
sors have been d isp laced or are fa ulty. Have the
system checked by an authori zed Audi dealer or
author ized Audi Service Facility soon .
Audi side assist : Unavailable when towing
Side assist sw itches off automatically when a fac ­
tory-installed trailer hitch is connected to t he
e lectrical connector on the trailer. T he re is no
gua rantee the system will sw itch off when using
a retrofitted tra iler hitch . Do not use s ide ass ist
when towing a trailer .

Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency.

~ You now have access to a p in. Using a screw­
drive r or s imilar objec t, p ress the pi n down and
hold it in that posit ion .
~ Press the release button in the se lector lever
and move it into the N pos ition.
Only move the selector lever out of the P position
when the ignition is switched on. If the vehicle
must be pushed or towed due to a power fa ilure
(for examp le, the battery is dead), the selector
lever must first be moved to the N position using
the emergency re lease mechanism.

- Also, in vehicles with all wheel drive, adapt
your driv ing style to the curre nt road and
traffic conditions. Do not let the increased safety provided tempt you into tak ing risks,
because th is increases the r is k of an acci­
dent.
- T he brak ing ability of your vehicle is limited
to the tra ction of the wheels. In this way, it
is not diffe rent from a two whee l dr ive ve hi­
cl e. Do not be tempted to accelerate to a
high speed when the road is slippery this in­
c reases the risk of an acc ident.
- Note that on wet stree ts, the front wheels
can "hyd roplane" if d riving at speeds that
are too high. Unlike front whee l drive
vehicles, the eng ine does not rev higher sud­
denly when the vehicle begins hydroplaning.
For this reason, pay attention to the road
condit ions regardless o f you r sp eed to re­
duce the r is k of an accident.
Energy management
The starting ability is optimized
The energy managemen t system manages the
electrical energy distribution and optimizes the
availability of electrical energy for starting the
engine.
When a ve hicle wit h a co nven tional energy sys ­
tem is not driven for a long time, the batte ry is
d rained by equipment (for example t he immobi l­
izer) . In certain circumstances, there could may
not be eno ugh energy to start the engine.
Your vehicle is equipped with a n intelligent ener ­
gy management system for distr ibuting e lectric i­
ty. This s ignificantly improves the starting ability
and increases the b attery life.
The energy management system Is made up of
battery diagno sis , idling current management
and dynamic energy management .
Battery diagnosis
T he batte ry d iagnosis de term ines t he b att ery
ch arge level. The senso rs detect the battery, the
battery current, and the battery temperature.

The c urren t cha rge level and the performance of
the battery are determined based on this .
Idling current management
The idling current manageme nt decreases the
energy used while parked. Wi th the engine
swi tched off , it m anages t he energy dis trib ution
to the d ifferent e lectrica l components. Date from
batte ry diagnosis is taken into acco unt for this.
De pend ing on the b atte ry charge level, ele ctrical
equipmen t is switched off one item a fter the o th ­
er, to preven t the bat tery from draining and to
retain the starting ability .
Dynamic energy management
While driv ing , dynam ic energy manageme nt dis ­
t ribu tes the appr opr iate amo unt of energy to the
e lectri ca l eq uipment. It contro ls the battery
charge level so that more energy is not used then
is being generated in order to maintain an opti­
mal battery charge level.
(D Tips
- Ener gy management cannot overcome the
laws of p hysics . Note that the charge level
and length of the battery life are limited.

What you should know
Maintaining the starting ability is the highest
priority.
A lo t of st ress is placed on the b attery when dr iv­
i ng sho rt distances, in t raff ic, and at cold times
of the year . A lot of energy is used but litt le is
generated. It is also critical when the engine is
not running but e lectr ica l equipment is sw itched
on. In th is case, energy is used but none is gener­
ated.
In sit uat ions like th is, ene rgy management w ill
active ly regulated the dis trib ution of energy.
Long periods without use
I f you do not drive yo ur vehicle for sever al days o r
weeks, e lectrica l equipment is gradua lly sca le d
back or sw itched off. This reduces ene rgy use and ..,.

ensures the vehicle wi ll be able to start after long
periods of time. Some convenience functions,
such as interior lighting or power seat adjust­
ment, may not be available under certain circum­
stances. These convenience functions will be
ava ilable aga in once you switch the ign ition on
and start the engine .
With the engine switched off
The battery will drain if you use functions s uch as
listening to the radio while the engine is sw itch­
ed off.
The vehicle's ability to start may be impaired by
the energy use, a message will appear in the In ­
fotainment system d isp lay.
The message indicates that the system will switch off automatically soon . If you wou ld like
to continue using the functions, you must start
the eng ine.
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated while
d riving, the battery can drain. This can happen
when little energy is generated, and much is used
and the charge level of the battery is not optimal.
To restore the balance of energy, components
that require large amounts of energy are tempo­
rari ly scaled back or switched off. Heating sys­
tems in part icu lar require a great deal of energy.
If you notice, for example, that the seat heating*
or rear w indow defroster is not working, then it
has been temporarily reduced or switched off .
These systems are available again as soon as the
e n ergy ba la nce has been restored.
In addition, you may notice that the idle speed
has slightly increased . Th at is normal and no
cause for conce rn. Due to the increased idling
speed , the additional required energy w ill be
generated and the battery will be charged.

-Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances. This increases the risk of
burns.
- If work on the fuel system or the electrical
system is necessary:
- Always d isconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or open
flames. Flu ids in the engine compartment
could start a fire.
- Keep an app roved fire ext inguisher imme­
d iate ly availab le.
- To avo id electr ical shock and personal injury
wh ile the eng ine is running or being started,
never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Other components of the high voltage
electronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repa ir with
the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking brake, move
selector lever to P (Park) .
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
cloth ing, jewelry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts or
other mov ing parts, or from contacting
hot parts. Tie back ha ir before starti ng,
and do not wear clothi ng that will hang or
d roop into t he engine.
- Min imize exposu re to emission and chem i­
cal hazards¢ .&.-

To detect leaks in time, inspect the veh icle
floor pan from unde rneath regularly. If you
see spots from oil or other veh icle fluids, have
your vehicle inspected by an authorized Audi
dealer.

not secured properly, stop at once and close
it.

ommend that you have the b rake fluid
changed by your author ized Audi dealer .
Battery
General information
Under normal operating conditions, the battery
in your Audi does not need any maintenance.
W ith
high outside temperat ures or long da ily
drives we recommend that you have the electro­
lyte level checked by a service fac ility . The elec­
trolyte level should also be chec ked eac h time
the battery is charged ¢
page 228 .
Have the battery checked when you take your ve­
h icle in for service. You a re well advised to re­
p lace a battery t hat is o lder than S years .
W ith certain types of a irbag dep loyment, the
battery is disconnected from the vehicle electr i­
cal system for safety reasons
¢ &. in Repair, care
and disposal of the airbags on page 157 .
Disconnecting the battery terminal s
Some vehicle functions (power window reg ula­
tors, for example) are lost i f th e battery termi ­
na ls are disconnected. These functions have to be
relearned after the battery termina ls are con­
nected aga in. To prevent th is , the batte ry shou ld
only be disconnected from the vehicle e lectr ica l
sys te m when abso lutely ne cessary for repairs.
Vehicles not driven for long periods
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period of
seve ral days or weeks, electrical components a re
gradua lly cut back or sw itched off . T hi s reduces
e n ergy cons umption and ma inta ins starti ng ca­
pab il ity over a longer pe riod

of the conve nience f unct io ns may not o pera te,
such as the inter io r lig hts or powe r seat a dju st­
ment . The convenience funct ions wi ll be avai lab le
again when you switch on the ignition and start
the engine.

Winter operation
Dur ing the winte r mon ths, ba ttery c apacity tends
to decrease as tempe ra tu res drop . This is be ­
ca use mo re power is also consume d while start ­
i ng, and the headlights, rear window defogger,
etc., are used more often.
Avo id unne cessary powe r consum ption, pa rticu­
l arly in city traffic or when traveling on ly short
distances . Let your author ized Audi dealer check
t h e capacity of the vehicle battery before winter
sets in~
page 228. A we ll charged battery will
not only p reve nt sta rting prob lems when the
weather is cold, but will also last longer.

If yo ur vehicle is left standing for several
weeks at extreme ly low temperatu res, the ve­
hicl e battery should be re m oved a nd stor ed
where it will not freeze. This w ill preven t it
fro m bei ng damaged and hav ing to be re­
p lac ed .
Working on the battery
Be e specially car eful when working on or near
t he bat tery.
The battery is loca ted in the luggage com part­
ment under the floo r. Befo re yo u check anything
i n the luggage compa rtment,
read and heed all

A WARNING
Whenever working on the battery or on the
electrical system, there is the risk of injury,
accident and even fire. Read and heed the fol­
lowing WARN INGS:
- Always wear eye protection. Do not let bat­
tery a cid or any lead pa rticles get on your
sk in or cloth ing. Sh ield your eyes. Exp losive
gases can cause blindness or other injury .
- Battery acid contains su lf ur ic ac id. Sulfur ic
acid can cause blindness and severe b urns.
-Always wear gloves and eye protection. Do
not tilt the battery because acid could leak
out of the ventilat ion open ings.
- If you get battery ac id in your eyes or on
your skin, immediately rinse with co ld wa­
ter for seve ral minutes and get medical at·
tention .
- If you should ingest any battery acid, seek
medical attention immediately .
- Do not expose the battery to an open flame,
electric sparks or an open light.
- Do not smoke.
- Do not interchange the positive and nega -
tive cab les.
- When working on the battery, be sure not to
short-c ircuit the terminals with tools or oth­
er meta l objects. Th is wou ld cause the bat­
tery to heat up very quickly, which could
lead to damage or explosion and persona l
injury.
- When a battery is charged, it produces hy­
drogen gas which is explosive and could
cause pe rsonal injury.
- Always keep the battery well out of the
reac h of ch ildren .

Check ing and Filling
-Before work is done on the electrical sys­
tem, disconnect the negat ive ground cable.
- Before performing any work on the electri­
cal system, switch off the engine and igni­
tion as well as any electrical equ ipment. The
negat ive cable on the battery must be dis­
connected . If you are just going to replace a
light bulb, then it is enough to switch off
the lights.
- Before d isconnecting the battery, switch off
the anti-theft a larm system! Otherwise you
will set off the alarm.
- When disconnecting the battery, first dis­
connect the negat ive cable and then the
positive cable.
- Before reconnect ing the battery, make sure
all electrical consumers a re switched off.
Reconnect the positive cable first and then
the negative cable. Never in terchange the
cables -this could start a fire !
- Never cha rge a froze n or a thawed-out bat ­
t ery . It co uld explode! If a battery has fro­
zen, then it must be replaced. A discharged
battery can freeze over at 32 °F (0 °C).
- Make sure the vent hose is always attached to the opening on the side of the battery.
- Never use batteries which are damaged.
There is the danger of an exp losion! Always
replace a damaged battery .
