Starting off with a trailer
T o prevent rolling back unintentionally on an incline, do
the following:
- Keep the switch pulled and depress the accelerator. The
parking brake stays applied and preve nts the vehicle
f rom rolling backward .
- You can release the switch o nce you are sure t hat you are
deve lop ing enough forward momentum at the whee ls as
you depress the accelerator.
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and trailer) and the
severity of the incline, you may roll backwards as you start. You can
prevent rol ling backwards by holding the parki ng brake sw itch
pul led out and acce lerating -just as you would when starting on a
h ill with a conventional hand brake. •
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventi on al b rake system fails or
locks.
- Pull th e swi tch and continu e to pull it to slow you r veh icle
with t he par king brake in an emergency .
- As soon as you r elease the switch or acc elerate, the
braking pro cess s tops .
If you pull the swi tch and hold it above a speed of about 5 mph (8
km/h), the emergency braking function is initiated . T he vehicle is
braked at all fou r whee ls by activating the hydraulic brake system .
Brake performance is similar to making an emergency stop~&.
So that emergency braking is not activated by mistake, an audib le
warning tone (buzzer) sounds when the switch is pulled . As soon as the switch is released, or the accelerator pedal is depressed, emer­
gency b raking stops .
& WARNING
Emergency braking should only be u sed in an emergen cy, when
the normal foot br ake has f ailed or the br ake ped al i s obstructed .
U sing the parking brake to perform emergen cy brakin g will slow
yo ur vehicle a s if yo u had made a full brake app lication . The law s
of phy sic s cannot be su spe nded even with E SP and it s asso ciated
c ompon ents ( AB S, ASR, EDS ). In corner s and whe n ro ad or
w eather conditions are bad , a full brak e application can cau se the
vehi cle to skid or the r ear end to break a way -ri sking an
ac cident .•
Driver messages in the instrument cluster
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
T his message appears when the parking brake is applied on an
incline that exceeds about 30%.
I n this case the b raking power of the park ing brake may
not be
adequ ate
to prevent the vehicle from rol ling unintentionally.
Plea se relea se parking br ake
This message appears, when a gear is selected and the acce lerator
pedal is depressed -release the parking brake.
Pre ss brake peda l to release parking brake
T his driver message appears when the switch to release the parking
brake was pressed. The parking brake can only be released if you
press the brake or accelerator peda l and press the switch at the
same time .
Parking brake malfun ction !
This d river message appears together with the yellow
when there is a parking brake malfunction. symbol

The image in the visua l display can be switched off on the MMI
display ::::> page
185. The acoustic distance warning remains active.
If you press a function button on the MMI termina l, the visual
display disappears . Manually switching the parking assist on again
via the
p ,y 1 switch shows the visual image on the MM I display aga in.
Further information regarding the MMI terminal is included in the
MMI user's manual.
R ear-view camera (rear view )
The rear-view camera picture::::> page 178, fig. 200 appears on the
MM I display as a mirror image. The rear -view camera picture has
orientation lines and marked s urfaces projected into it as an aid to
the parking process ::::> page

area . You shou ld stop backing up, preferably before you reach this

If your vehicle is close to an obstacle, the visual distance display
a lso appears in the picture from the rear -view camera . This superim ­
posed display is intended to help d isplay the relevan t critica l vehicle
area.
I f the visual d isplay is shown on the MMI display and you press the
control button with the Rear view function::::> page

the next time you park. But the picture from the rear -view camera

Controls and equip ­
ment
& WARNING
• Sensor s have dead spaces in which obje cts cannot be
detected. Be e spe cially careful to check for small children and
an imals before ba cking up . Small children and animals will not
always be detected by the sensors.
• The Audi parking system is not a substitute for being careful
and alert when backing up. Be e spe cially careful during parking
and similar maneuvers . Always watch where you are dri ving and
make sure that nothing is in the way.
• Remember that low ob sta cles which have already been
s ignaled may pass below the system' s sen sing zone when the
v ehi cle is ba cking up . The fa ct that the signal stops doe s not mean
that you have cleared the obstacle . When the signal stops , impact
is imminent . Obje cts su ch as trailer hit che s, chain s, narrow posts
or fences covered by a thin l ayer of paint may not always be
detected by the sy stem. They can still damage your vehicle
without warning .
• Alway s make sure that the volume and frequency of the chime s
is adjusted so that you can eas ily hear the acoustic distance signal
even if the radio is playing , the air -conditioner blower is on High or
there is a high level of out side noise .
- Check the setting s whenever someone else has dri ven the
vehicle before you.
• Improper relian ce on the Aud i parking sy stem can cau se colli ­
sions and serious per sonal injury .
- Never rely only on parking assi st when ba cking up .
- Always check rear view mirrors to make sure it is safe to back
up .

Parking m od e
Two different parking modes are available for parking with the rear ­
view camera . The two different parking modes are denotes as
"parking mode 1 " => page 178 and "parking mode Z' => page 179.
"Parking mode 1 " => fig . 196, for example, can be used to park in a
parking space or a parking garage=>
page 178.
"Parking mode 2" => fig . 197, for example, can be used to (parallel)
park on the side of the road =>
page 179.
"Parking mode 1" appears by default in the MM I Disp lay if the rear ­
view camera is activated=>
page 173. You can switch to "parking
mode
2" by pressing the control button with the mode ©
=> page 178, fig . 201 function. By repeated ly pressing the control
bu tton with the
mode function, you can switch back and forth
between "parking mode
1" and "parking mode 2" .
Or ientat ion lines and marked surface s
Orientation lines and colored marked surfaces(=> page 178, fig. 200
or=> page 179 , fig. 202) are projected into the rear -view camera
pictures , subject to the two different parking modes . These orienta ­
t ion lines and surfaces offer aid when parking or maneuvering . The
orientation lines and surfaces refer to the height of a level driving
surface.
When the indicated orientat ion lines and indicated blue surfaces
superimpose vehicles or objects, at the latest, the respective
distance to the vehicles or objects has become too short
=>
page 782 .
If the t runk lid is open or if an electrical connection to the trailer
socket* is established=>
page 783, the orientation lines and marked
surfaces are notdisplayed .
In the MMI you can preset wh ich sys tem is to be shown on the MMI
display =>

angle. These lines identify the direction of travel the rear of the

markers are each placed at a distance of app rox. 3 ft (1 ml from o ne
another. Through thes e markers, the distance to an obstacle can be
es timated .

road. For this reason, the blue surfaces and curved l ines are

The red line in the MMI Display~ fig. 205 indicates the distance you
should maintain from an obstacle, when parking. If an obs tac le is
l ocated at road l eve l, you can approach the obstacle unti l the red
l ine to uche s the obstac le ( 1.3
ft, or 4 0 cm , distance). On the o the r
h a n d, if an obstacle is no t locat ed a t road level (the bu mpe r of a
vehic le, for examp le), you should not approach this obstac le unti l
t h e red line touc hes the obstacle.
F or instance, if you back u p toward another vehicle, it will a ppear as
thou gh the gui de help line s and s urface s are be ing pushed over the

Adjusting the chimes -option 1
The volume and the pitch (frequency) of the chimes can
be adjusted in the MM/.
Press the [CAR] function button.
Select
Systems in the CAR menu.
- Select
Audi parking system .

- Select Front volume to change the volume of the front
audible signal generator, or
Rear volume to change the
volume of the rear audible signal generator.
Select
Front frequency to change the frequency of the
front audible signal generator or
Rear frequency if you
want to change the frequency of the rear audible signal
generator.
When you adjust the volume and frequency, the new setting will
sound for approximately 2 seconds from the signal generator
affected.
