If side assist turns off automatically, the indicator light on the button
w ill go out and you w ill see a message in the instrument cluster

Safety tips
The s ide assist detection may be limited when driving aro und narrow
s tr eet corners, on hilly st ree ts, an d un der poo r wea ther condit ions. It is possib
le that the radar sensors may also detect other objects,
s uch a s high or s taggere d guardrails.
Side assis t does not measure ac tual lane wid th . The system assumes
a fixed la ne w idth . Detection in the left and rig ht lanes is based on
th is assu m ed lane w id th . W hen drivi ng on nar row ro ads or w hen
driving to the left or r ight of the cente r of a t ravel lane, it is possib le
th at vehicles will be de te ct ed tha t are
no t in the la ne next to t he lane
you are us ing.
& WARNING
• Improper reliance on the side assist system can cause collisions
and serious personal injury:
-Never rely only on s ide assist when changing lanes.
- Always check rear view mirrors to make sure that it is safe to
change lanes.
• Side assist cannot detect all vehicles under all conditions­
danger of accident!
• Side assist cannot detect vehicles in time to alert you when
they approach from behind at very high speed , or fall drop back
very quickly .
• The radar sensor's
vision can be reduced or entirely blocked by
rain, snow, and heavy spray. This can result in side assist not
adequately detecting vehicles or, in some cases , not detecting
them at all . Always keep an eye on the direction you are traveling
and the relevant area around the vehicle .
• Please note that side assist indicates there are approaching
vehicles , or vehicles in your blind spot , only after your vehicle has
reached a driving speed of at least 19 mph (30 km/h) .
• Side assist signal does not work around tight corners (turning
radius less than 328 feet, or 100 m) .
• Side assist is no replacement for the driver's full attention . The
driv er alone is responsible for lane changes and similar driving
maneuvers . Always keep an eye on the direction you are traveling
and the relevant area around the vehicle .

fig. 177 to activate the Audi parking system manually.
Activation of the acoustic parking system is confirmed by
a brief acknowledgement sound. The indicator light in the
switch lights up.
Deactivation
- If you drive forwards faster than approx. 6 mph (10 km/h), or
- if you switch the ignition off, the entire acoustic parking
assist is automatically deactivated, or
- you can press the switch
Pw! in the center console
=:, page 161, fig. 177 to deactivate the Audi parking
system. The indicator light in the switch goes out.
You have to turn on the acoustic parking assist manually if you wish
to park the vehicle forwards or if you wish to approach an obstacle
forwards and want a distance warning.
The range at which the sensors start to measure is

Distance warning is given by chimes which are generated by a signal
generator . The volume and the pitch of the chimes can be adjusted in
the MMI =>
page 171.
Mute
In the case of vehicles with automatic transmission, an acoustic
distance warning is discontinued when the transmission selector lever is moved to the P position
. However, the system remains active.
As soon as the selector lever is moved from the
P position and the
vehicle approaches an obstacle, the acoustic distance warning
resumes.
Driving forward/backward
Distance warning when driving forward/backward is based on detec­
tion of an obstacle in the range of the parking assist . As the distance
decreases, the time interval between the audible tones becomes
shorter.
When the distance is less than approx. 1 ft (0.30 m), the tone
becomes continuous. At this point you should stop backing up or
driving forward .
If the distance to an obstacle remains the same, the volume of the
distance warning is gradually reduced after about
4 seconds (does
not apply to the zone for the continuous tone). If you start to
approach the detected obstacle again, the distance warning will
sound at the normal volume again.
Parking
When you select another gear when parking (e.g. reverse/forward),
the warning tones are temporarily suppressed, but the visual display
remains on the MMI display. If you start approaching a detected
obstacle again, the distance warning will sound at the normal volume
again.
Visual display
The segments on the MMI display indicate a change in the distance
between the vehicle and an obstacle . The number of segments
displayed depends on the obstacles in front of or behind the vehicle.
The closer the vehicle comes to the obstacle, the closer the segments
approach the vehicle=>
page 161, fig. 178. When the segment
before last is displayed, the vehicle has reached the collision zone. At
this point you should stop backing up or driving forward=>& .
The image in the visual display can be switched off on the MMI display
=>
page 173 . The acoustic distance warning remains active. .,,

•
Sensors have dead spaces in which objects cannot be detected .
Be especially careful to check for small children and animals
before backing up. Small children and animals will not always be
detected by the sensors .
• The Audi parking system is not a substitute for being careful
and alert when backing up. Be especially careful during parking
and similar maneuvers . Always watch where you are driving and
make sure that nothing is in the way.
• Remember that low obstacles which have already been
signaled may pass below the system's sensing zone when the
vehicle is backing up. The fact that the signal stops does not mean
that you have cleared the obstacle. When the signal stops, impact is imminent . Objects such as trailer hitches, chains, narrow posts
or fences covered by a thin layer of paint may not always be
detected by the sy stem. They can still damage your vehicle
without warning.
• Always make sure that the volume and frequency of the chimes
is adjusted so that you can easily hear the acoustic distance signal
even if the radio is playing, the air-conditioner blower is on High
or there is a high level of outside no ise.
- Check the settings whenever someone else has driven the
vehicle before you.
• Improper reliance on the Audi parking system can cause colli­
sions and serious personal injury.
-Never rely only on parking assist when backing up.
- Always che ck rear view mirrors to make sure it i s safe to back
up.

The rear-view camera picture, appearing in the MMI
Display, shows the area behind the vehicle.

Parking mode
Two different parking modes are available for parking with the rear­
view camera. The two different parking modes are denotes as
"parking mode 1" => page 166 and "parking mode 2" => page 167. "Parking mode
l" => fig . 179, for example, can be used to park in a
parking space or a parking garage=> page 166.
" Parking mode
2" => fig . 180, for example , can be used to (parallel)
park on the side of the road=> page 167.
" Parking mode l" appears by default in the MMI Display if the rear­
view camera is activated=> page 161. You can switch to "parking
mode
2" by pressing the control button with the mode©
=> page 166, fig. 184 function. By repeatedly pressing the control
button with the
mode function, you can switch back and forth
between "park ing model" and "parking mode
2" .
Orientation lines and marked surfaces
Orientation lines and colored marked surfaces(:::::> page 166, fig. 183
or=> page 167, fig. 185) are projected into the rear-view camera
pictures, subject to the two different parking modes. These orienta ­
tion lines and surfaces offer aid when parking or maneuvering. The
orientat ion lines and surfaces refer to the height of a level driving
surface .
When the indicated or ientation lines and indicated blue surfaces
super impose veh icles or objects, at the latest, the respective distance
to the vehicles o r objects has become too short => page 170.
I f the trunk lid is open or if an electrical connection to the trailer
socket* is established => page 171, the orientation lines and marked
surfaces are not displayed .
I n the MMI you can preset which system is to be shown on the MMI
display => page 173:
• Visual d isplay,
• Rear-v iew camera picture,
• An automatic switch between visual display and rear-view camera,
or
• No picture.
Th e rear-view camera can be turned on and off in the MMI
=> page 173. The acoustic distance warning remains active.

Adjusting safety belt height
Use the safety belt height adjustment to change belt
position on the shoulder.

The safety belt height adjustors for the front seats can be
used to adjust the height of the shoulder portion of the
safety belt so that it is positioned correctly.
- Push the latch=> fig. 211 up or down so that the shoulder
portion of the safety belt is positioned nearly midway over
the shoulder => & in "Safety belt position" on
page 202.

Always read and heed all WARNINGS and other important infor­
mation =>

Improperly worn safety belts
Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause severe inju­
ries.
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause serious injury or
death. Safety belts can only work when they are correctly
positioned on the body . Improper seating positions reduce the effectiveness of safety belts and will even increase
the
risk of injury and death by moving the safety belt to critical
areas of the body. Improper seating positions also increase
the risk of serious injury and death when an airbag deploys and strikes an occupant who is not in the correct seating posi­
tion. A driver is responsible for the safety of all vehicle occu­ pants and especially for children . Therefore:
- Never permit anyone to assume an incorrect sitting posi­
tion in the vehicle while traveling=>& .
& WARNING
Improperly worn safety belts increase the risk of serious personal
injury and death whenever a vehicle is being used.
• Always make sure that all vehicle occupants are correctly
restrained and stay in a correct seating position whenever the
vehicle is being used.
• Always read and heed all WARNINGS and other important

Safety belt pretensioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear-end collisions above a particular
severity, safety belts are tensioned automatically.
The safety belts are equipped with safety belt pretensioners. The
system is activated by sensors in front, side and rear-end collisions of
great severity. This tightens the belt and takes up belt slack~
& in
" Service and disposal of safety belt pretensioner" on
page 205 .
Taking up the slack helps to reduce forward occupant movement
during a collision. ..

PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on and stay on,
imm ediately ins tall the rear-facing child seat in a rear seating
position and have the a irbag system inspected by your Audi
dealer .
& WARNING
If, in exceptional circumstances, you mu st install a forward-facing
c hild restraint on the front passenger 's seat:
• Always make sure the forward-facing seat has been designed
and cert ified by its manufacturer for use on a front seat with a
pa ssenger front and side airbag .
• Never put the forward-facing child re straint up against or very
near the instrument panel.
• Alway s move the passenger seat into it s rearmost po sition in
the seat's fore and aft adjustment range, as far away from the
airbag as possible , befo re installing the forward-facing child
restraint. The backrest must be adjusted to an upright pos ition.
• Make sure that the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
and stays on all the time whenever the ignition is switched on .•
Advanced Airbag System components
The front passenger seat i n your veh icle has a lot of very important
parts o f th e A dva nced A irbag System in it. These parts include t he
we ight-sens ing mat, sensors, wiring, bracke ts, and more . The func­
ti on of the system in the front p assenger seat is chec ke d by the e lec ­
tr on ic contro l u ni t whe n the ig ni tion is on . T he contro l unit monitors
the Advanced Airbag System and turns the airbag indicator light on
when a mal function in the system compone nts is detected. The func­
tion of the a irbag indicator light is described in g reater detail be low.
Be ca u se the fron t passenge r seat con tains import ant parts of the
Advanced Ai rbag System, you must take care to prevent it from being

. Damage to the seat may prevent t he Adva nced A irbag for

The front Advanced Airbag System consists of the
following:
• Cras h sensors in the front of the vehicle t hat measure vehicle
acc ele rat ion/d ece le rat ion to prov ide info rma tion t o the Adv anced
Airbag System about t he severity of the crash .
• An e lec tron ic con trol uni t, w ith i ntegr ated cr ash sen sors fo r front
and side impacts. The contro l unit "dec ides" w het her to fire the front
air bag s base d on th e inf ormati on re ceived from t he cr ash sensors.
T he control unit also "decides" whether the saf ety b elt pret ensio ners
sh ould be ac tiva ted.
• An Advanced Airbag with gas generator for the dr ive r inside the
stee ring w hee l hub .
• An Advanced Airbag with gas generator inside the inst rument
p ane l for the fron t passenge r.
• A weig ht-sensing mat under the upholste ry padd ing of the front
passenge r seat cushi on th at m easures the tota l we ig ht on t he seat.
