• Imp roper reliance on the side assist system can cause collisions
and seriou s per sonal injury:
- Never rely only on s ide ass ist when changing lanes.
- Alway s che ck rear view mirror s to m ake sure that it i s safe to
change lanes.
• Side a ssist cannot detect all vehicles under all condition s­
danger of accident!
• Side a ssi st cannot detect vehicle s in time to alert you when
they approach from beh ind at very high speed, or fall drop back
very quickly .
• The radar sen sor's
v is ion can be reduced or entirely blocked by
rain , snow, and heavy spray . This can result in side as sis t not
adequately detecting vehicle s or , in some cases, not detecting
them at a ll. Alway s keep an eye on the dir ection you are traveling
and the rele vant area around the vehicle.
• Please note that side assist indicates there are approaching
vehicles , or vehicles in you r blind spot, only after you r vehicle has
reached a driving speed of at lea st 19 mph (30 km/h).
• Side assist signal doe s not work around t ight corners (turning
radius less than 328 feet or 100 m ).
• Side assist is no replacement for the driver 's full attention . The
driver alone is respon sible for lane change s and s imilar driving
maneuvers. Always keep an eye on the direction you are traveling
and the relevant area around the vehicle.

• T o ensure that you do not adversely affe ct s ide as sist , do not block
the area on the rear b umper where the radar sensors are located with
fo reign objects (such as st ic kers or b icycle ra cks).
• Make s ure that the signal light on the o utside mi rror is not
bloc ked by stic ke rs or othe r items.

detergent. Apply the water with a damp cloth o r sponge a nd pat the
fabr ic dr y wi th a n ab sorb ent , dr y clot h.
Sta ins from choco late or makeup should have dete rge nt paste (e.g.
ox -gall soap) ru bbed into them . Afterwards, remove t he soap w ith
w at er ( damp s ponge).
Alcoho l can be used to treat sta ins from grease , oil, lipstick or a ba ll­
po int p en. Melte d gre ase o r dye mus t be p atted o ff usi ng absorbe nt
material. It may be necessary to ret reat t he areas with detergent
paste a nd water .
In the case of ge nera l soili ng o f th e upholste ry an d cover mater ia l, we
recommend hiring a specialist that has the equ ipment to clean the
sea t cover s and o ther fab ric su rf a ces by sh am poo ing and s pray
extractio n.

the formation of harmful deposits, sometimes ca lled "sludge," that
over time can lead to expensive re pairs.
At the time of pr int ing, engine o ils available in the U .S . and Canada
that meet the exacting s pecifications of Audi oil standard VW 502 00
are synthetic engine oils. This does not mean, however, that every
synthetic engine oil will meet Audi oil standard VW 502 00. So a lways
be s ure that you use an approved o il.
To help prevent the format ion of harmful deposits use only oil with
the following specifications printed on the oil container:
Audi oi l stand ard VW 502 00
Oil container labels may carry the specification singly or in comb ina­
tion with other designations and o il quality standards.
Vi sco sit y
Engine oils are graded according to their viscosity . The proper
viscos ity grade oil for your eng ine depends on climactic or seasonal
conditions where you drive. You can use oi l with a v iscosity grade of
SAE SW40 across all tempera ture ranges for norma l driving cond i­
tions.
However, if engine o il viscosity grade SAE SW40 is not avai lable, you
can a lso use viscos ity grade SAE SW-30 or SAE OW-40 as long as it
meets Audi oil quality standard VW 502 00 specifications .
Be cause eng ine oil that meets the A udi oil standard may not be avail­
able everywhere when you need it, we strongly recommend that you
always carry w ith you an extra quart (liter) o f oi l that expressly
conforms to the VW 502 00 specif ication, in case you have to top off
the oi l while on the road.
On ly if the level of the o il is at or be low the min imum mark on the oil
dipstick - and no oil that expressly conforms to Audi oi l standard
VW 502 00 spec ificat ions is ava ilable - may you top off with a high
quality engine oil, preferably synthetic-based, that meets ACEA A3,
ACEA AS or ACEA BS or AP I SL spec ifications, but even then, on ly in
viscos ity grades SAE SW-40, SAE SW-30, or SAE OW-40. However,
dur ing t he entire time between oil change intervals, neve r top off w
ith more tha n a total of 0 .5 qt/liter eng ine o il that does not
con form to Audi o il specification VW 502 00.
For more information abo ut eng ine oil that has been approved for
your vehicle, p lease contact either your authorized Audi dealer or
Audi Customer Relat ions at 1 (800) 822-2834 or v isit our web site at
www.audiusa.com or www .audicanada.ca. Here you will also find a
cur rent list of oils (manufacture rs, brand names e tc.) t hat co nform to
Audi oil standard VW 502 00.
Chan ging the e ngine oil
T he eng ine oil and oil fi lter must be changed according to the mileage
(kilometers) and time interva ls specified in your vehicle's Warranty
&
Maintenan ce boo klet. Do no t exceed these interva ls - harmful
deposits from old eng ine oil can reduce engine performance and can
lead to expensive engine repairs.
Chang ing t he oil at the recommended intervals is so very important
because the lubricating properties of oil decrease gradually d uring
normal veh icle use. If you are not sure when you have your o il
changed, ask your authorized A udi Service Advisor.
Under some circumsta nces the engine oil should even be changed
more frequently. Change oil more often if you drive most ly short
dis tances, ope rate the vehicle in dusty areas or mostly under stop­
and-go traffic conditions, or when you use your vehicle where temper­
a tures stay below freezi ng point for long periods .
Detergent add itives in the oil will make fres h oil look dark after the
engine has been running for a short t ime . This is normal and is not a
reaso n to cha nge the oil mo re often than recommended.
Damage or malfunctions due to lack of maintenance
It is essentia l that you change your o il at the recommended intervals
using only engine o il that comp lies w it h Aud i oil standard
VW 502 00 . Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not cover
damage or ma lfunctions due to fa ilure to follow recommended main­
tenance and use requirements as set forth in the Aud i Owner's
Ma nual and W arra nty

to deny warranty coverage unless you present to the dealer proof in ._

Engine oil consumption
Th e e ngin e in your v ehi cle dep ends on an ad equate
amount of oil to lubricate and cool a ll of its movin g parts.
In order to p rovide e ffect ive lubric ation and cooling of inter na l
eng ine components, all internal combust ion eng ines consume a
c ert ain a mo unt o f oil. Oil co nsump tion va ries from e ngine to eng ine
and may change sign ifican tly over the li fe of the engine . Typically,
eng ines w ith a sp ecifie d brea k-in period (s ee =>
page 261) co nsum e
more o il dur ing the break -in period t han they cons ume a fter oil
cons umption has stabilize d.
Under norm al cond itions, th e ra t e of oil con su mp tio n depe nds on t he
quality and v iscosi ty of the oil, the RPM ( revolutions pe r minute) at
w hich the engi ne i s op erate d, the ambie nt te m pe ratu re and r oad
conditions. Further factors are the amount of oi l di lution from water
co ndens ation or f uel re sidue and th e oxid ation level of the oil. As any
eng ine is s ubject to wear as mileage builds up, the oil consumption
may increase over time until replacemen t of wo rn components may
become necessa ry .
With all these varia bles comin g into play, no stan dar d rate of oil
co nsum ption can be establis hed o r spe cified. Th ere is no alte rnative
to regular and frequent chec kin g of the o il level, see
Note .

• The oil pressure warn ing display 'e.::1; is not an indicator of the oil
level. Do not rely on it . Instead, check the oil level in your engine at
regular intervals, preferably each time you refuel, and always
before going on a long trip .
• If you have the impression your eng ine consumes excessive
am ounts of o il, we recom mend that you cons ult your Audi dea le r to
have the cause of your concern properly d iagnosed. Keep i n m ind that

Before you check anything in the engine compartment,

- Turn off the engine.
- Unscrew the oil filler cap from the cylinder head cover
==>
page 294, fig. 245 or==> page 294, fig. 246.
- Carefully top off with the appropriate oil in 0.5 liter doses.
- Check the oil level again after two minutes==>
page 293.
- Top off the oil again, if necessary.
- Screw the cap back on the filling hole and slide the oil
dipstick in as far as it will go.
& WARNING
• While topping off, the oil must not come in contact with hot
engine parts - fire hazard!
• The oil filler cap must be properly secured to prevent oil from
being sprayed on the hot engine and exhaust system when the
engine is running - fire hazard!
• If your skin has come in contact with the engine oil, you must
subsequently cleanse it thoroughly.

• The oil leve l must not be above range@- danger of converter or
eng ine damage! Contact an authorized dealership to draw off oil, if
necessary.
• Audi does not recommend the use of oil additives. They may
damage the engine and adversely affect your New Vehicle
Warranty.

sewage network or the soil.
• Observe and follow legal regulations when disposing of empty oil
containers. •
Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an autho­
rized Audi dealer or a qualified service station.

The engine oil must be changed according to the intervals specified in
your Warranty
& Maintenance booklet. This is very important because
the lubricating properties of oil diminish gradually during normal
vehicle use.

oil in your vehicle your self:
• Wear eye protection.
• To reduce the ri sk of burns from hot engine oil, let the engine
cool down to the touch.
• When removing the oil drain plug w ith your finger s, stay as far
away as possible. Always keep you r forearm parallel to the ground
to help prevent hot oil from runn ing down your arm .
• Drain the oil into a containe r designed for this purpo se, one
large enough to hold at lea st the total amount of oil in your
engine.
• Engine oil is poisonous . Keep it well out of the reach of chil­
dren.
• Continuous contact w ith used eng ine oil is harmful to your
skin. Always protect your skin by washing oil off thoroughly with
soap and water.

Engine cooling system
Coolant
The engine coo lant performs two functions: i t keeps the
en gine fro m overhe ating and i t protects the engine fr om
fre ezing in th e winter .
The cooling system is sea led and genera lly requ ires little attention .
Th e cool ing sy stem h as been filled at the f actory wit h a permanent
coo lant which does not need to be changed . T he coolant cons ists of a
mixt ure of water an d the manufacturer's glycol -basedcoolant ad di­
tive Gl2++ antifreeze w ith anticorros ion addit ives (50% for USA
mode ls; 60% for Canadian models). This mixture both ass ures the
necessary frost protect ion and p rotects meta l components in th e
eng ine's cooling system from co rrosion an d scaling. It also raises the
boiling point of the cool ant.
Do not red uce the concentration of the coolant in the summer by
add ing p la in water. The proportion of coolant additive must be at
least 50 % but not more than 60 %
to maintai n antifreeze protection
and coo ling efficiency. If the coolant frost pro tect io n i s too low, t he
coo lant co uld free ze and damage t he veh icle heating an d eng ine
coo ling system.
For yea r- round drivi ng , antifree ze is added at t he factory for tempe r­
atures dow n to:
• - 31°F( -35°C)USA
• -40
°F ( -40 °C) Canada .
You can mi x the Gl2+ + coo lant additive wit h other additives (G12 + or
Gl2) . Always check with you r autho rized Aud i dea ler .

- Read the brake fluid level from the brake fluid reservoir
=> fig. 248 . T he brake fluid level mus t be between the
" M IN" and "MAX" markings.
The br ake fl uid re se rvoir is loc ated at the rear pa rt iti on of the engine
compartment on the left side~ page 290.
T he f lu id level may drop slightly after some time due to the auto­
matic adjus tment of t he b rake pads. This is not caus e for alarm.
If the brake flu id leve l falls considerably below the "MIN" mark, t he
br ak e wa rning/ind ic ator lig ht ( U.S . model s:

Changing brake fluid
H ave the brake flui d changed by an ex perienc ed techni­
cian.
Brake flui d abso rbs mois ture from t he a ir . If t he wa ter con ten t in the
brake fl uid is too hig h, corros io n in the b rake system may res ult afte r
a period of time . The boiling po int o f the bra ke fl uid will also decrease
cons iderab ly and decrease brak ing perfo rmance.
The refore, the brake fl uid m ust be changed
every two years . Always
use new bra ke fluid w hich conforms to Fede ral Motor Veh icle St an­
dard "FMVSS 116 DOT 4" .
Th e b rake fl uid reservoi r ca n be diffi cult to rea ch, there fore, we
recommend that you have the bra ke fluid c hanged by your author ized
Audi dealer. Your dea ler has the correct tools, the right b rake fl uid
and the know-how to do t his for you .
& WARNING
• Brake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored only in the closed
original container out of the reach of children!
• Brake failure can result from old or inappropriate brake flu id.
Observe these pre cautions:
- Use only brake fluid that meets SAE specification
J 1703 and
conforms to Federal Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Always che ck
with your authorized Audi dealer to make sure you are us ing
the correct brake fluid. The correct type of brake fluid i s also
indicated on the brake fluid reservoir .
- The brake fluid must be new. Heavy use of the brakes can
cause a vapor lock if the brake fluid is left in the system too
long . Thi s can seriously affect the efficiency of the brakes as
well as your safety . This could result in an accident.

Rear lifting point
The li fting point is located on the ve rt ica l reinfo rceme nt of the lower

• To reduce the risk of serious injury and vehicle dam age.
- Alway s lift the vehicle only at the special workshop hoist and
floor jack l ift points illustrated =>
page 353, fig. 289 and
=> fig. 290 .
- Failure to lift the vehicle at these points could cause the
vehicle to tilt or fall from a lift if there is a change in vehicle
weight distribution and balance. This might happen, for e xample , when heavy component s such as the engine block or
transmission are removed .
• When removing heavy components like these, an chor vehicle
to hoist or add correspond ing weights to maintain the center of
gravity . Otherwi se , the vehicle might tilt or slip off the hoist,
caus ing serious personal injury.

• Be aware of th e following points before lifting th e vehicle :
-The vehicle should neve r be lifted or jacked up from under ­
neath the eng ine oil pan , the transmission housing , the front or
rear axle or the body side members . This could lead to serious
damage.
- To avoid damage to the underbody or chassis frame, a rubbe r
pad must be inserted between the floor ja ck and the lift points.
- Before driving over a workshop hoist , check that the vehicle
weight does not exceed the permissible lifting capacity of the hoist . _..
