Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 14 and the ABS
warning illuminate
together there may be a mal
function in the ABS, and there may also be a mal
function in the brake system itself¢.&. .
The ABS
will not work and you will notice a change in
braking response and performance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake sys
tem

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together with the ABS . The ABS
warning light will come on if there is a malfunc
tion in the EDL system¢ page 190. See your au
thorized Audi dealer as soon as possible.
A WARNING
- If the 9 (USA models)/ll] (Canada mod
els) warning light does not go out, or if it
comes on while driving, the ABS system is
not working properly. The vehicle can then
be stopped only with the standard brakes
(without ABS). You will not have the protec
tion ABS provides. Contact your Audi dealer
as soon as possible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning light, the
DJ warning light and the 9warning light
come on together, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard braking. Rear wheel
lock-up can cause loss of vehicle control and
an accident. Have your vehicle repaired im
mediately by your authorized Audi dealer or
a qualified workshop. Drive slowly and avoid
sudden, hard brake applications.

EPC Electronic power control

This warning/indicator light monitors the elec
tronic power control.
The~ warning/indicator light (Electronic Power
Control) illuminates when you switch the ignition
on as a function check .
(D Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a malfunc-
tion in the engine electronics. Have the .,,.

W Glow plug system
A pp lies to: ve hicles w ith diesel e ngi ne
The control light illuminates when the glow plug
system is active.
If t h e II indica tor light illum inates, the glow
p lug system is active. Yo u should sta rt the engine
immediate ly after the ind icator light switches
off . The indicator light only illuminates for ap
proximate ly 1 second if the engine is warm or if
the outside temperature is above 46 QF (8 QC).
('D Tips
-If the glow p lug indicator light illuminates
while dr iv ing, there is an engine contro l
malfunction. The engine should be checked
i mmediately.
- If the indicator light does not illum inate at
a ll when switch ing the ignit ion on, there
may be a malfunction in the glow plug sys
tem. The engine should be checked .
o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Ind ica tor Lamp (M IL) is part of
the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system. The
symbo l
¢'41.ights up whe n the ignition is switch
ed on and wi ll turn off a fter the engine has sta rt
ed and has sett led at a constant idle speed . This
indicates that the MIL is working proper ly.
The warning light illumina tes when there is a
mal function in the engine e lectronic system.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer and have the malfunct ion corrected.
An improperly clo sed fuel fill er cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate¢

When the II symbol illuminates, you can alter
your driving style to assist the filter self-clean ing
process. Drive for approximate ly 15 m inutes w ith
the selector lever in the S pos it io n at a minimum
speed of 37 mph (60 km/h) and an engine speed
of approx imately 2,000 RPM. The temperatu re
i n crease th at will res ult from this can b urn off
t h e soot in the filte r. The symbo l will swi tch off
when the cleaning is successful. A fter a success
ful cleaning, there is no need to bring the car to
an a uthorized dea le r or q ualified workshop be
cause this is part of normal vehicle operation.

The engine speed is automatically limited to the
speed displayed in the driver information system.
This protects the engine from overheat ing.
The engine speed limitation deactivates once the
engine is no longe r in the critical temperature
range and you have re leased the accelerator ped
al once.
If the engine speed limitation was activated by
an engine control malfunction, the indicator light
~ also turns on. Make sure that the speed does
not go above the speed disp layed. Drive to your ..,.

appears, there is a malfunction in the adaptive
light system . The head lights st ill function .

lights or the control unit for the Adaptive Light
repaired .

faulty or malfunctioning . The repair m ust be

performed by t rained personnel using the cor
rect oil in order to ensure safety .
¢ Q Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal.
Wheneve r yo u use the left II or the r ight B
turn s ignal, the indicator light blinks . When you
u se the emergency flashers, both indicator lights
flash.
I f one of the turn sign al light bulb s bu rn o ut, the
turn s ignal will b link twice as fast as no rma l.
Caref ully drive to yo ur authorized Aud i dea le r im
med iate ly to have the malfunction corrected. The
i ndicato r light does not indicate a ma lfunction if
a turn signal on the trailer or on the vehicle fails i n trailer towing mode.

--Never rely exclusively on the outside tem
perature display to determine if a road sur
face is icy or not. Keep in mind that road
surfaces, especially bridges and overpasses,
could be ice covered and slippery even at an
outside temperat ure above 41 °F (+S °C).
- Always reduce your speed and dr ive with
special care in cold weather conditions when
the chance of encountering icy road surfaces increases .

-You can select the units used for tempera
ture, speed and other measurements in the
MMI.
- If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are driv
ing at a very low speed, the temperature
shown in the display might be slightly high
er than the actual outside temperature . This
is caused by the heat being radiated from
the engine .

Checking service intervals
The remaining distance or time to the next oil
change or to the next inspection can be viewed in
the MMI. Select the
ICARI function button > Car
systems
control button > Servicing & checks >
Service intervals .
In new vehicles or after resetting the display , the
display can be viewed after approximately
310 miles (500 km) .
Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dealer will reset the corre
sponding service schedule after performing the
appropriate service on your veh icle . You also have
the possibility to reset the oil change schedule
after having performed an oil change according
to Audi specificat ions. Select the
ICARI funct ion
button
> Car systems control button > Servicing
& checks > Service intervals > Reset oil change
interval.
@) Note
- Only reset the oil change display when you
have completed an oil change.
- If you disconnect the battery terminals, no
calculations can be made for the service in
terval display during this time and no serv
ice remi nder w ill appear. Remember that
observing the proper service interva ls is v i
tally important to extending the life of your
vehicle, particularly the engine, and main
taining its value. Even if the mi leage driven
is low, the max imum period of one year
from one service to the next must not be ex
ceeded .

-The information in the Serv ice Reminder re
mains stored even when the vehicle battery

In the MMI, yo u can specify which informat ion
should be d isplayed such as navigat ion info rma
tion* or Night vision assistant*.
The speed display and some of the red indicator
lights cannot be hidden in the MMI.
D is pl ay bri ghtness
You can adjust the disp lay brightness in the MMI.
The display brightness decreases automatically
as the amount of light decreases. The bas ic level
of br igh tness is adjusted w ith the inst rument
il
lum ina tion ¢ page 51.

To prevent scratches on the g lass cove ring the
Head-up D isplay, do not place any objects in
the projection opening.

- Sunglasses w ith polar izat ion fi lters and un
favorab le lighting conditions can affect the
display.
- An optimum display depends on the seat
position and the height of the Head- up D is
play .
- A specia l windshield is needed for the Head
up Disp lay fu nction .

On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL )
The Ma lfunction I ndi cator Lamp (M IU ¢.ij in the
i nstrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag
nostic (OBD II) system .
The wa rni ng/indicator light ill uminates when the
i gnition is sw itched on and goes out after the en
gine starts a nd the idle has stab ilized . This indi
cates that the M IL is working proper ly .
If th e light do es not go out after the eng ine is
started, or illum inates while you are driving, a
malfunct ion may ex ist in the engine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converte r
could b e damag ed .

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monitored
component in your eng ine system has been as
signed a code . In case of a malfunction, the com
ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory .
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the light illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop
erly closed
¢ page 214.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor
ed data can only be displayed using special diag
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD) .
In order to connect the special diagnostic equip
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC) . The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release
c> fig . 17.
Your author ized Audi dealer or a qualified service
station can interpret the code and perform the necessary repair.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for per
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc
tions, which can increase the risk of a colli
sion!
Electronic speed limiter
Your veh icle may be factory equipped with t ires
that are rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph
(2 10 km/h). This is less than the maximum speed
of your vehicle. To reduce the risk of sudden tire
failure and loss of control if the vehicle is operat
ed at excessive speeds, your vehicle also has an
electronic speed limiter. The electronic speed limiter prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the tir e speed rating . For more information
¢page 243 .
If the engine control unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed signals, the Malfunction Indicator
L amp
(Mil) Ill will illuminate . If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for
assistance .

Your vehicle 's top speed is elect ronically lim ited
to 155 mph (250 km/h).
If the engine control unit receives faulty vehicle
roadspeed signals, the Malfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL)¢• will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
A WARNING
-A lways observe the posted speed limits and
adjust your speed to suit prevailing road, traf
fic and weather conditions. Never drive your
vehicle faster than the maximum speed rating
of the tires installed.

The headlights only wo rk when the igni tion is
sw itched on. Whi le sta rting the engine or when
switching off the ignition, the headlights will go
off and only th e side marker lights will be on.

All-weather lights
The front lights a re adjus ted au toma tica lly so
that you are less likely to see g la re from your own
headlights, for example whe n driving on a wet
road.
Automatic dynamic headlight range control*
Yo ur vehicle is equipped wi th a headlight range
contro l system so that the head lights do not
bl ind oncoming t raffic if the vehicle load
changes. The head light range also adjusts auto
matically when brak ing and acce lerating .
Light functions
The following ligh t fu nct ions are available de
pend ing on vehicle e quipment and o nly fu nction
whe n the light switc h is in the AUTO position.

Static cornering light* -the corne ring ligh t
switches on automat ically when the steering
whee l is turned at a certain angle at speeds up to
app roximately 44 mph (70 km/h) and when the
turn s ignal is activated at speeds up to approxi
ma tely 25 mph (40 km/h) . The area to the side of
the ve hicle is illuminated better when turning .
Dynamic curve light* -the curve light adapts it
self to the curves in the road .
Highway light fun ction* -this funct ion adapts
the lighti ng for highway d riving based on vehicle
speed .
A WARNING
--Automatic headlig hts are only intended to
assist the driver . They do not relieve the
driver of his responsibi lity to check the
headlights and to turn them o n manually
according to the cur rent light and vis ib ility
co ndi tion s. For example, fog cannot be

detected by the light sensors. So always
switch on the headlights
io u nder these
weather cond itions and when driving in the
dark.
- Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other motorists. Always turn on the
headlights so that you can see ahead and so
that others can see your car from the back.
- The rear fog lights should only be turned on in accordance with traffic regulat ion, as the
lights are br ight for following traffic.
- Please obse rve legal regulations when using
the light ing systems described .
@ Tips
-The light sensor* for automatic dynam ic
headlight range control* is located in the
rear view mirror mount . You should there
fo re not app ly any st icke rs to the windshie ld
i n this area in order to prevent malfunctions
or fail ures.
- In the event of a light sensor malfunction,
the driver is not ified in the i nstr ument clus
ter display

-You w ill hear a warning tone if yo u open the
driver door when the exter io r lights are
switched on .
- In coo l o r damp wea ther, the inside of the
headlig hts, turn s ignals and tai l ligh ts can
fog over d ue to the temperature d if f erence
between the inside and outside. They will
clear short ly after switch ing them o n. This
does not affect the serv ice life of the light
i ng .
Lights and V ision
Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher makes other motorists
aware that you or your vehicle ore in on emer
gency situation .

When the emergency flasher is on, a ll fo ur turn

well as the light in the emergency flasher switch

works when the ign ition is turned off .
The emergency flashers will turn on automatical ly if you are in an accident where the airbag has
deployed .

You should turn on the eme rgency flashers
when:
- you a re t he last vehicle standing in a traffic
jam so that any other vehicles coming can see you, or when
- your vehicle has broken down or you are in
an emergency situat ion, or when
- your vehicle is be ing towed by a tow truck or
if you a re towing another vehicle behind
yo u.
Adjusting the exterior lighting
The settings ore adjusted in the MMI.
