materialsothattheairbagcannotde­

andprotectproperly.
-Never repair,adjust,orchangeanyparts
oftheairbagsystem.
-Allworkonthesteeringwheel,instru­
mentpanel,frontseatsorelectricalsys­
tem(includingtheinstallationofaudio
equipment,cellulartelephonesandCS

Parts
oftheairbagsystemareinstalledat
rnanydifferentplaces
onyour Audi.Installing,
rernoving, servicingorrepairing apartinan
areaofthevehiclecandamageapartofan
airbagsystemandpreventthatsystemfrom
working properlyinacollision.
There
aresomeimportantthingsyou haveto
knowtornakesurethattheeffectivenessof
thesystemwillnotbeimpairedandthatdis­
carded
componentsdonotcauseinjury orpol­
lute
theenvironment.

sition

aspossible. Thebackrestmustbeadjust­
edtoanuprightposition. Makesurethat
thePASSENGERAIRBAGOFFlight
comesonandstaysonallthetimewhen­

Anairbagsystemthatisnotfunctioning
properlycannotprovidesupplementalpro-
tectioninafrontalcrash.

Iftheairbag indicatorlightcomeson,it
meansthattheremay besomething
wrong withtheAdvanced AirbagSystem.

whenitisnotsupposedto,orwillnotin-

Other thingsthatcanaffect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changingthevehicle'ssuspensionsystemcan
changethewaythattheAdvanced AirbagSys­
temperformsinacrash. ForexampLe, using
tire-rim
combinationsnotapprovedbyAudi,
lowering
thevehicle,changingthestiffnessof
thesuspension,includingthesprings,suspen­
sionstruts,shockabsorbersetc. canchange
theforcesthataremeasuredbytheairbag
sensorsandsenttotheelectroniccontrol
unit.Somesuspensionchangescan,forexam­
ple,increasetheforce levelsmeasuredbythe
sensorsandmaketheairbagsystemdeployin
crashesinwhich itwouldnotdeploy ifthe
changeshadnotbeenmade.Otherkindsof
changesmayreducetheforcelevelsmeas­
uredbythesensorsandpreventtheairbag
fromdeployingwhenitshould.
Thesensorsinthesafetybeltbuckleforthe
driverandfrontpassengerseattelltheelec­
tronic
controlmoduleifthesafetybeltis
latchedor not.Ifthesafetybeltisbeing used,
thefrontairbag willdeployataslightlyhigh­
errateofvehicledecelerationthanifthesafe­
tybeltisnotbeing used..Therefore,inapar­
ticular collision, it
ispossiblethatanairbag
will
notdeployataseatingpositionwherethe
safetybeltis bei ngusedbutwill inflateatthe
positionwherethesafetybeltisnotbeing
used.
Itisimportantthatnothinginterfere
withthesafetybeltbucklessothatthesen-
sorscansendthecorrectinformationabout
safetybeltusetotheeLectroniccontrolunit.

ThesafetybeLtbuckLeforthedriverandfront

supposedtodeploy orwhentheyhaveaL­
readydeployed,forexamplewhenyourvehi­
cle strikes

first collision.
Airbagsystem
Thisisjustoneofthereasonswhyanairbagis
notasubstituteforthesafetybelt. Theairbag
systemworksmosteffectively whenusedwith
thesafetybelts. Therefore, aLwayswearyour
safetybeltscorrectly.
Itisimportanttorememberthatwhilethe
supplementaLkneeairbagsystemisdesigned
toreducethelikelihoodofseriousinjuries,
otherinjuries,forexample,swelling, bruising,
minorabrasionsandfrictionburnscanalso
occurwhenanairbaginfLates.

Airbags areonly supplemental restraints.Al­
ways wear

Thereisalotthatyouandyourpassengers
mustknowanddotohelpthesafetybeltsand
airbagstoprovidesupplementalprotection.
AWARNING
Aninflating kneeairbagcancauseserious
injury.Wearingsafetybeltsincorrectlyand
improperseatingpositions increasethe
riskofseriouspersonalinjuryanddeath
wheneveravehicleisbeing used.
- The knee airbag
systemcannotprotect
youproperly ifyouareseatedtooclose
toanyoftheairbagLocations.Whenad­
justingtheirseatpositions, itisimpor­
tantthatboththedriverandthefront
passengerkeeptheirupperbodiesand
kneesatthefollowingminimumsafe
distances:

chestandthesteeringwheel/instru­
mentpanel.

kneesandthelowerpartoftheinstru­
mentpanel.
- The risk
ofpersonalinjuryincreasesif
you lean forward

sultofthecollision.Itisnotpossibletode­

triggeringrangethatwill coyer
every possible
angleofimpact,sincethecir­
cumstanceswillvary considerablybetween
onecollisionandanother.Importantfactors
include, forexample,thenature(hardorsoft)
oftheimpactingobject,theangleofimpact,

weightsensingmatwiththeinformationstor­
edintheelectroniccontrolunit.
Even
thoughyour vehicleisequippedwithan
Advanced Airbag
system,allchildren,espe­
ciallythose12yearsandyounger,shouldal­
ways ride
inthebackseatproperlyrestrained
fortheirageandsize.Theairbag onthepas­
sengersidemakesthefrontseatapotentially
dangerousplace forachildtoride. Thefront
seatisnotthesafestplace forachildinafor­
ward-facing child
safetyseat.Itcanbeavery
dangerousplaceforaninfantoralargerchild
ina rearward-facingseat.
AdvancedAirbagsandtheweight-1sensingmatinthefrontseat
The Advanced Airbagsysteminyourvehicle
hasbeencertifiedtomeetthe"low-risk" re­
quirementsfor3-and6-yearoldchildren on
thepassengersideandsmalladultsonthe
driverside.Thelowriskdeploymentcriteria
areintendedtoreducetheriskofinjury
throughinteractionwiththeairbagthatcan
occur,
forexample,bybeingtooclosetothe
steeringwheelandinstrumentpanelwhen
theairbaginflates. Inaddition,thesystem
hasbeencertifiedtocomplywiththe"sup­
pression"
requirementsoftheSafetyStand­
ard,toturnoffthefrontairbagforinfantsup
to12monthswhoarerestrainedonthefront
passengerseatinchildrestraintsthatare list­
ed
intheStandard.
(FMVSS)208asapplicableatthetimeyour
vehicle
wasmanufactured.
The Advanced AirbagSysteminyourvehicle
detectsthepresenceofaninfantorchildina
child
restraintonthefrontpassengerseatus­
ing
theweight-sensingmatintheseatcush­

thesensorbelowthesafetybeltlatch

thefrontpassengerseatthatmeasuresthe
tensiononthesafetybelt.
Theweight-sensingmatmeasurestotal
weightofthechildandthechildsafetyseat

thechild'sbodyandthefrontofthepassen­

cureachild restraint.
Always heedthechildsafetyseatmanufactur­
er'sinstructions wheninstalling achild re­
straintinyourvehicle.Toactivatetheconver­
tible locking retractor:
~Placethechildrestraintonaseat,prefera­
blyontherearseat.
~Slowly pullthebeltaUthewayout.
~Routeitaroundorthroughthechildre­
straintbeltpathq&,.
~Pushthechildsafetyseatdown withyour
full
weighttogetthesafetybeltreallytight.
~Insertthebelttongueintothebuckle for
thatseatingposition.
~Guidethesafetybeltbackintotheretractor
untilthebeltliesflatandsnugonthechild
safetyseat.
~Youshouldheara"clicking" noiseasthe
beltwindsbackintotheinertia reel.Testthe
convertible lockingretractorbypuLlingon
thebelt.Youshouldnolongerbeableto
pullthebeltoutoftheretractor. Thecon­

Theconvertible lackingretractar forchild re­

when the
beltiswound ailthe way back into
the retractor.
~Presstheredbuttononthesafetybelt
buckle. Thebelttonguewillpopoutofthe
buckle.~Guidethesafetybeltalltheway back into
its
stowedposition.
Always
letthesafetybeltretractcompletely
into itsstowedposition. Thesafetybeltcan
now beused
asan ordinarysafetybeltwith­
outtheconvertible lockingretractorforchild
restraints.
Iftheconvertible lockingretractorshouldbe
activated inadvertently,
thesafetybeltmust
beunfastenedandguidedcompletely backin-
toitsstowedpositiontodeactivatethis..
