Engineailconsumption
Theengineinyourvehicle depends onan adeÂ
quate
amountofoilto lubricate andcoolail
ofitsmoving parts.
Inordertoprovideeffectivelubricationand
coolingofinternaLenginecomponents,allinÂ
ternalcombustionenginesconsumeacertain
amountofoil.Oilconsumptionvariesfram
enginetoengineandmaychangesignificantly
overthelifeoftheengine.Typically,engines
withaspecified break-inperiod(see
~page162)consumemoreoilduringthe
break-inperiodthantheyconsumeafteroil
consumptionhasstabilized.
Undernormalconditions,therateofoilconÂ
sumptiondependsonthequalityandviscosity
oftheoil,theRPM(revolutionsperminute)at
whichtheengineisoperated,theambient
temperatureandroadconditions.FurtherfacÂ
torsaretheamountofoildilutionfromwater
condensationorfuelresidueandtheoxidaÂ
tionleveloftheoil.Asanyengineissubjectto
wearasmileagebuildsup,theoilconsumpÂ
tionmayincreaseovertimeuntilreplacement
ofworncomponentsmaybecomenecessary.
Withallthesevariablescomingintoplay, no

EnginecooLingsystem
Coolant
Theengine coolant performs twofunctions:it
keeps theengine fromoverheating anditproÂ
tects theengine fromfreezing
inthewinter.
ThecoolingsystemissealedandgenerallyreÂ
quires little
attention.
ThecoolingsystemhasbeenfilledatthefacÂ
tory with a
permanentcoolantwhichdoesnot
needtobechanged.Thecoolantconsistsofa
mixture
ofwaterandthemanufacturer'sglyÂ
col-basedcoolantadditive G12++antifreeze
withanticorrosion additives(50%forUSA
models;60%forCanadianmodels).This mixÂ
ture
bathassuresthenecessaryfrostprotecÂ
tion and
protectsmetalcomponentsinthe
engine's coolingsystemfromcorrosionand
scaling.Ttalsoraisestheboilingpointofthe
coolant.
DonotreducetheconcentrationofthecoolÂ
ant
inthesummerbyaddingplain water. The
proportionofcoolantadditivemustbeat
least50%butnotmorethan60%tomainÂ
tain
antifreezeprotectionandcooling efficienÂ
cy.Ifthecoolantfrostprotectionistoolow,
the
coolantcouldfreezeanddamagethevehiÂ
cle heating
andenginecoolingsystem.

Battery
General information •
Your vehicle

anAGMbattery.Thisbatteryis located
intheluggagecompartmentandmustbe reÂ
placed with
anoriginalequipmentbattery.
Under
normaloperatingconditions,thebatÂ
teryismaintenance-free.
Havethebatterycheckedwhenyoutakeyour
vehicle
inforservice.YOlr"arewell advisedto
replace abatterythatisoldèr-thanSyears.
Disconnecting thebattery terminaIs
Somevehiclefunctions(powerwindowreguÂ
lators,forexample)arelostifthebatteryterÂ
minalsaredisconnected.Thesefunctionshave
toberelearnedafterthebatteryterminalsare
connectedagain.Topreventthis,thebattery
shouldonly bedisconnectedfromthevehicle
electricalsystemwhenabsolutelynecessary
for repairs.
Vehicles notdriven forlong periods
Ifyouaregoingtoletyourvehiclestandfora
longtimeandnotdriveit,youshouldremernÂ
berthereareelectricalcomponentswhich are~
stillfunctioningandtheywilldrawenergy
fromthebatteryanddrain it,forexample,the
engine immobilizer.Topreventthis,youcan
either
chargethebatteryoccasionallytokeep
it
ingood working condition oryou candisÂ
connect
thenegativecableonthebattery.
Winter operation
During
thewintermonths,batterycapacity
tendstodecreaseastemperaturesdrop. This
isbecausemorepowerisaLsoconsumedwhile
starting,andtheheadlights,rearwindow deÂ
fogger,
etc.,areusedmoreoften.
Avoidunnecessarypowerconsumption,parÂ
ticularly
incity traffic orwhentraveling only
shortdistances.LetyourauthorizedAudi
dealer check
thecapacityofthevehicle batÂ
tery before
wintersetsinqpage196.Awell
charged
batterywillnotonlypreventstarting
problems whentheweatheriscold,butwill
also
lastlonger.
Replacing battery
ThenewbatterymusthavethesamecapaciÂ
ty,voltage(12volts),amperage,construction
andplugsealing,astheoriginalbattery.SpecÂ
ifications
arelisted onthebatteryhousing.
Batteries specially
developedbyAudifulfill
the
maintenance,output,andsafetyrequireÂ
ments.
When installing
thebattery,makesuretheigÂ
nition
andailelectricalconsumersareswitchÂ
edoffq(j).
Werecommendthatyou usemaintenanceÂ
freeorcycle-resistant/leak-proofbatteries
accordingtothestandardsTL82S06(from
December
1997)andVW7SO73(fromAuÂ
gUst2001).
Replacingthebatteryshouldbe carriedbya
qualified workshop. PleasefollowtheinstrucÂ
tions on
thebatterycover.
