- When switching the ignition on, the nee­
dles in the instrument cluster move up­
ward briefly.
- The illumination for the instrument clus ­
ter lights up whenever you switch on the
i gnition with the
vehicle headlights off .
As the daylight fades, the instrument
cluster illumination likewise dims auto­
matically a nd will go out completely
when the outside light is very low. This
feature is meant to remind you to switch
on the head lights when outside light
conditions become poor .
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes) .

If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area
at the end of the scale indicates maximum
permissible engine RPM after the br eak-in pe­
riod. Before reaching this area, move these­
lector lever to position "D (Drive)" or ease
your foot off the acce lerator pedal.
(D Note
The tachometer needle should only briefly
be in the red zone: you could damage your
engine! The beg inning of the red zone var­
i es depending on the engine.

Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.

Digital clock with date display
Your vehicle is equipped with a quartz con­
trolled digital clock .

To set the hour

To set the minutes
.. Pull the knob as ma ny times as necessary

.. Pull the knob as many times as necessary
until the day, month or year display flashes.

When the date disp lay stops blinking, this
means the time and date have been success­
fu lly stored.

onds .
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coo la nt gauge ¢ page 10 , fig. 3@
only works when the ign ition is on. To prevent
damage to your e ngine, please note the fo l­
l owing important points:
Engine cold
As long as the nee dle rem ains a t the left end
of the gauge, the engine s till h as not reac hed
its operating temperat ure. Avoid high engine
speeds, heavy engine loads and heavy throt­
tle.
Normal temperature
W hen the engine has re ache d its ope rat ing
temperature, the need le w ill move into the
mid dle of t he gauge and rema in there .
If the
engine is working hard at high outside tem ­
peratures, the needle may turn fu rther to the
right. This is no cause for concern as long as
the . warni ng lig ht in the inst rument cl uster
does not illuminate .
When the. war ning light starts to flash,
th is can mean one of two thi ngs: either the
coolant
temperature is too high, o r the coo l­
ant
level is too low ¢ page 16 .

or hear steam or coolant escap ing.

- M ounting ad ditiona l lights or accessories
i n fr ont of the air inlets reduces the coo l­
ing effect of t he radiato r. At high o utsi de
tempe rat ures or h igh engine load, the
eng ine could overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to
properly d istribute the cooling a ir when
the vehicl e is movi ng. If the spoiler is
damaged, this c ould reduce the coo ling
e ff ect a nd th e eng ine could then ove r­

Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is
on . When the needle reaches the red area, the
warning light in the instrument cluster will il­
luminate ¢
page 20 00']. Time to refuel!
(D Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An ir­
regular supply of fue l can cause eng ine
misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex ­
haust system. The catalytic converter
could then overheat and be damaged.
Speedometer with odometer
The speedometer shows you the vehicle
speed , and the odometer shows you how
many miles (kilometers) you have driven.

The distance driven is shown in miles (USA
models) or in kilometers (Canada models).
lower odometer
The lower odometer shows the total number
of miles (kilometers) driven.
Upper odometer (trip odometer)
The upper odometer shows the tota l number
of mi les (kilometers) driven since you last re­
set the odometer back to zero . You can use
this odometer when you want to keep track of how many miles (kilometers) you have driven
for a single trip or errand. The last digit indi­
cates 1/10 of a mile (100 meters) . You can set
the trip odometer back to zero by pressing the
reset button

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction somewhere in the in­
strument cluster,
dEF w ill appear in the trip
odometer and will stay on . Contact your au­
thorized Audi dea ler to have the prob lem cor­
rected.
Immobilizer
When the ignition is sw itched on, the data on
the ignition key are scanned automat ica lly.
If an unauthor ized key was used,
SAFE is dis­
played continuously in the odometer display
field . The vehicle cannot be operated
¢ page 33.
Warning/indicator
Lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or
malfunctions ¢.& .
Messages may appear with some indicator
li ghts. The messages turn off after a sho rt
time. To display a message again, press the
Set/Check button¢
page 10, fig. 3@ . If
there is more than one malfunction, the indi­
cator lights will turn on one after the other for
approximately two seconds each.
Some indicators lights in the display can turn
on in severa l co lors.
A WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other
important vehicle information may result
in ser ious personal injury or vehicle dam­
age.
- Whenever stalled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance
off the
road, stop the engi ne, and turn on the
emergency flasher¢

This warning/indicator Light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is a malfunction in the ABS, or when the park­
ing brake is set.
If the - (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) symbo l flashes in the display with the
parking brake released, there is a malfunction
in the brake system . In addition to the sym­
bol, one of two messages appears in the dis­
play:

If you have a malfunction in the safety sys ­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer
immediate ly. Otherw ise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acci­
dent.
~ Safety belt warning light
App lies to vehicles: with safety belt warning light
The warning light is a reminder to fasten
safety belts.
The warning light . comes on for a few sec ­
onds after the ignition is switched on as a re­
minder to fasten your safety be lt.

0 Generator
This warning/indicator light detects a mal­
function in the generator or in the vehicle's
electrical system .
The. warning/ind icator light illuminates
when yo u switch on the ignit ion and must go
out after the engine has started .
I f the . warning/indicator light illum inates
while you are driving, yo u should contact you r
author ized Audi dealer. Since the veh icle bat­
tery is discha rging, you should switch
off any
unnecessary electrical consumers (for exam ­
p le, the air conditioner).
~ Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair.
I f the . symbol appears in the display and
flashes, the oil pressure is too low . In addition
to the symbo l, the following message a lso ap­
pears in the d isp lay:
S wi tch off en gin e! Oil pr essure is t oo low
• Pull off the road and stop the vehicle .
• Shut the engine down.
• Check the eng ine oil level¢
page 185.
• Contact your authorized Audi dealer for as-
sistance if necessary .
Engine oil level too low
If the engine oil level is too low , top off oil to
t h e proper level

Engine oil leve l OK
If the . symbol starts flashing again even
though the eng ine oil level checks OK on the
dipstick,
do not start dri ving again and d o
not l et th e engine run at idl e.
Instead, con­

- The engin e oil pr essure symbol. is
n ot an indi cato r for a l ow eng in e oil lev ­

- The yellow oil le vel warning indication

must be repaired as soon as possible .

then either the engine coolant

Swit ch off en gin e and chec k coolant level
• Pull off the road and stop the veh icle.
• Turn
off the engine.
• Check coolant level

{i§l) Anti-lock brake system
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light & (USA mod­
els)
;tlJ (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on .
The l ight will go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illumi­
nate when you switch the ign ition on .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds .
- The warning/indicator light illuminates wh ile driving.
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes­
sage
Stabilization program and ABS: fault!
See owner's manual
also appears in the in­
strument cluster display and a warning tone
sounds .
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 14 and the
ABS warning illuminate
together there may be
a malfunction in the ABS, and there may also
be a ma lfunction in the brake system itself
¢ ,&.. The ABS will not work and you will no­
tice a change in braking response and per­
formance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake
system

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together with the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the
EDL system
¢page 150.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible.
A WARNING

- If the E (USA mode ls)l ii] (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on whi le driving, the ABS
system is not work ing properly . The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only with the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protection ABS provides.
Contact your Audi dea ler as soon as pos­
sible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning ligh t,
the
J;.J warning light and the & warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels could lock up first under hard
brak ing. Rear wheel lock-up can cause
loss of vehicle control and an accident.
Have your vehicle repaired immediately
by your authorized Audi dealer or a quali­
fied workshop. Dr ive slow ly and avoid
sudden, hard brake applications.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light ., the
DJ warning light and the
ABS warning light
[( Gi a come on together,
the rear wheels could lock up first under
hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle contro l and an acci­
dent . Have your vehicle repaired immedi­
ately by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop. Drive s lowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake applications.
{0) Worn brake pads
EtJ Check brake pads!
If the warning light i lluminates, immediate ly
contact your authori zed Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop to have all brake pads inspect­
ed . On USA models the warn ing light

comes on together with the warning light
1111. Both sets of brake pads on an ax le
must always be replaced at the same time.

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control.
The ~ warn ing/ indicator light (Electron ic
Power Control) illuminates when you switch
on the ignition as a function check .
(D Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are dr iving, then there is a mal­
function in the engine elect ron ics. Have
t he malfunction co rrected as soon as pos­
sible by you r autho rized Aud i dea ler o r
qualif ied workshop .
~ Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The symbol
l\l lights up when the ignition is
turned on and will turn off after the engine
h as started and has settled at constant idle
speed . Th is ind icates that the MIL is working
properly .
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunct ion i n the engine electronic system.
Contact your author ized Audi dealer and have
the ma lfunction corrected.

The Ill symbol illum inates when there is an
engine contro l ma lf u nction . The indicator
li ght ~ in the instrume nt cl uster a lso illumi­
na tes. The engi ne speed is l imited to the
speed displayed in the driver in format ion sys­
tem. Keep in mind that the engine speed wi ll
not exceed the val ue disp layed in the driver in­
format ion system, for example when down­
shifting.
P lease go to an au thorized A udi dealer or oth ­
er qualified wo rkshop to have the malfunctio n
repaired.
'.!2::. Checking the engine oil level

If the II symbo l comes on, add 1 quart ( 1 li­
ter) of oil at the next opportunity

If the II symbol illum inates, contact your

inspected .
0 Battery voltage low
(•) Low battery charge : battery will be

If the indicator l ight turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there may be limited starting
ability.
If this message turns off afte r a little while,
the battery charged enough while d rivi ng .
If the message does not turn off, have yo ur
authorized Aud i dea ler or qualified workshop
correct the malfunction .

Bi) Fuel supply too low
When the (g symbol illuminates, this means
there are about 1.9 gallons (7 liters) of fuel
left in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

If the symbol lights up, even when there is
ample fuel in the tank, and the text
Tank sys­
tem malfunction! Please contact workshop
appears in the display, there is a fault in the
system. Contact a qualified workshop to have
the fault rectified.

Windshield washer fluid level too
low
If the Ill symbol illuminates, add w indshield
washer f luid to the washer system

® Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you
when a vehicle light bulb has become defec­
tive.
If a defect ive bulb has been detected by the
system or a light bu lb burns out, the
fsl sym­
bol with a message appears in the disp lay to
tell you wh ich bu lb is burnt out and where it is
l ocated. For example:
Rear left turn signal
After 5 seconds, the message disappears. If
you want to recall the message into the dis­
p lay, press the CH ECK button

There are three reasons why the defective
bulb message would appear in the display:
- The light bulb has burnt out
Q page 231.
- The fuse is "blown" Q page 228, Replacing
fuses.
- The wire connection to the light bu lb is de-
fective.
H ave the bu lb rep laced or the connection re­
pa ired by your a uthorized Audi Service depart­
ment.
A WARNING
- Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex­
plode wh ile they are being changed caus­
ing serious pe rsonal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
h igh-voltage sect ion of gas discharge
(xenon) lamps. Fa iling to do so could re­
sult in death or serious injury!
BRAKE LIGHT t<® > Brake light defective
In case of a ma lfunction or component fail-
ure, the symbo l (USA models)/
(@ ll ing electrical components should be checked,
repaired or replaced, as necessary:
- Brake light bulbs
- All wir ing connections
- Brake light switch
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler for assis­
tance if necessary.
(D Tips
The brake light sw itch is on ly inspected as
part of the functional check after the en­
gine is started.
i,0 Headlight range control defective
Applies to vehicles: wit h dynamic headlight range adjust­
ment
If the II illuminates, the dynamic headlight
range control is no longer working properly.
Have the system checked and repaired at your
authorized Audi dealer .
rsO Adaptive light defective
Applies to vehicles: with Ada ptive Lig ht
rm Adaptive light defective
When this symbol rm illuminates, it means
that Adaptive Light is defect ive. Go to a qua li­
fied workshop to have the headlights or the
control unit for the Adaptive Light repaired.

The Driver information display inside the in ­
strument cluster provides you, the driver ,
with important information.

With the igni tion on, the display in the Dr iver
I nformation System shows the fo llow ing in­
formation :
- CD* inserted or Radio* station set
- Outs ide temperature* : At temperatures be-
low 41 °F (+ 5 °C), a snowflake symbol ap­
pears in front of the tempe rature d isplay

- Wa rning: front lid , door or eng ine compart­
ment lid open: The disp lay appea rs if the
