- Do not leave children inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.
@ Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag de­
ployment a ll locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to g ive access to the
vehicle occupants from the outside.
- If the power locking system should mal­
function, you can lock each door individ­
ually using the vehicle key .
- If the power locking system should fail,
you can still open the fue l tank flap in an
emergency
c>page 179.
- You are well advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe!

The remote controls allows you to:
- lock or unlock the vehicle
- select ively unlock the rear lid.
The turn signals will flash briefly whenever
you lock or unlock the vehicle. Also, the interi­
or light will come on or go off whenever you
open or close the driver's door .
The transm itter and battery are located in the
head o f the remote contro l. The receiver is lo­
cated ins ide the vehicle. The max imum effec ­
tive range depends on several th ings . Remem­
ber, if the battery is weak, the effective range
decreases.
The remote-control key contains a fo ld-out
key that you can use to manually lock or un­
lock the vehicle and to start the engine.
If you need to replace the remote control, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your authorized Aud i dealer. Only then can
you use the key again.

- The remote contro l key is automatically
deactivated when the ignition is switch­
ed on.

36 Opening and closing
-The operation of the remote control key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer­
ence from transmitters in the vicinity of
the vehicle working in the same frequen­
cy range (e.g. a cell phone, radio equip­
ment) .
- In order to make sure the locking func­
tion is working, you should always keep
your eye on the vehicle to make sure it is
properly locked .
- Do not use the remote control if you are
inside the car, otherwise you may unin­
tentionally lock the vehicle, and then you
would set off the anti-theft alarm when
you try to start the engine or open a
door. In case this happens anyhow, push
the unlock button
CD .
- Use the panic function only if you are in
an emergency situation.
Resetting the remote control
The remote control must be reset if the vehi­
cle does not unlock .

control.
.,,. Manually unlock the driver's door lock with
the mechanical key within 30 seconds.

Operating locks with the key

Locking and unlocking the vehicle from
inside
The vehicle can be locked or unlocked from
the inside using the power locking switch .

If you lock the vehicle using the power locking
switch , please note the following:
- You cannot open the doors or the rear lid
from the
outside (increased security, for ex ­
ample when you are stopped at a red light).
- You can unlock and open the doors from the
inside by pulling on the door handle .
-If the driver's door is opened (after you have
locked the vehicle from the inside using the
power locking switch), the door will remain
unlocked to prevent you from locking your­
self out of your vehicle. After you close the
door, you have to lock the driver 's door
again.
- If you have a crash and the airbag is activat-
ed, the doors automatically unlock. ..,.

The anti-theft alarm system triggers an audi­
b le alarm and turns on the emergency flasher
if an unauthor ized interference with the vehi­
cle is sensed by the system.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched on?
T he anti -theft a larm system is switched on
when you lock the driver's door manually us­
ing the fold-out key, or when you use the re­
mote control. The system is activated approxi­
mately 30 seconds after the veh icle is locked .
The indicator light ~
fig. 36 starts flashing
rapidly for 30 seconds and then blinks slowly.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched off?
The anti-theft a larm system is switched off
on ly when you use the remote contro l to un­
lock your veh icle. If you do not open a door
within 30 seconds after you have un locked
with the remote cont ro l, the vehicle will lock
itself again automatically.
If you lock just the dr iver's doo r using your
key, the front passenger's door and the rear
lid remain locked.
When will the anti theft alarm system be
triggered?
When the vehicle is locked , the alarm system
monitors and protects the following pa rts of
the vehicle:
- engine compa rtment
- luggage compartment
- doors
- ignition
When the system is activated, the alarm will be triggered if one of the doors, the engine
hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the igni­
tion is turned on.
The anti-theft a larm system will also go off
when the battery is disconnected.
You can also trigge r the alarm by pressing the
PANIC button on your remote-control key.

gency. Press the PANIC button again to turn
off the alarm .
How is the anti-theft alarm switched off
when trigge red?
The alarm system is switched off when you
unlock the vehicle using the remote -control
key or when the ignition is switched on . T he
alarm will also switch itself off when it comes
to the end of its cycle .
Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher will blink briefly when
the doors, engine hood and rear lid a re prop­
erly closed.
If the emergency flashers do not blink, check
the doors, engine hood and rear lid to make
sure they are properly closed. If you close a
door, the hood or the rear lid with the anti ­
theft alarm sw itched on, the emergency flash­
ers will blink only after you have closed the
door or lid .
(!) Tips
For the anti-theft alarm system to func­
tion properly, make sure all veh icle doors
and windows are closed before leaving the
vehicle.

A WARNING
- Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, especially with access to vehicle
keys. Unsupervised use of the keys can
result in starting of the engine and use
of vehicle systems such as power win­
dows, etc. which could resu lt in serious
injury.
- Remember -you can still open or close
the power w indows for about ten mi­
nutes after the ignition is sw itched off.
Only when e ithe r of the front doors a re
opened are the power windows switched
off.
- Be careful when closing the windows .
Check to see that no one is in the way, or
serious injury could result!
- Always remove the ignition key whenever you leave your vehicle .
- If you lock your vehicle from the ou tside,
no one, especia lly children, sho uld re­
main in the vehicle.
- Do not stick anything on the windows o r
the windshield that may interfere with
the driver's fie ld of vision.
(D Tips
- When the doors are opened, the win­
dows are automatically lowered 10 mm .
- The windows can still be opened and
closed for about ten minutes after the
ignition has been turned off. The power
w indows are not shut off unt il one of the
front doors is opened.
Convenience close/open feature
You can close or open the windows from out­
side when you lock or unlock your car with the
key.

switched on. While start ing the engine or
when switching off the ignition, the head- lights
will go off and only the side ma rker

Daytime running lights (DRL) (USA
models)
T he daytime running lights can be turned on
or off using this function. If the function is ac­
tive, the daytime ru nning lights are turned on
automatica lly when the ign it ion is switched
on.
T he daytime running lights are activated

when the light switch is at the AUTO* or DRL *
position.
Daytime running lights (Canada models
only)
The daytime running lights are activated only
when the light switch ¢ fig. 39 is either at the
0 or the :;oo: pos ition.
T he daytime r unning lights funct ion cannot be
turned off.
Automatic headlight control*
In the switch position AUTO the automatic
headlight control
is turned on. The low
beams are turned on automatically through a
light sensor as soon as amb ient b rightness
(e .g. when driving into a tunnel) falls below a
value preset at the factory. When ambient
brightness increases aga in, the low beams are
turned off again automatically ¢.&..
In the
AUTO position the low beams are
switched off automatically when the ignition
is turned off .
Light Sensor Malfunction*
In the event of a light sensor malfunction, the
driver is notified in the instrument cluster dis­
play:

on permanently with the switch in
AUTO* .
However , you can conti nue to turn the lights

The headlight washer system cleans the
headlights.
., Operate the windshield wiper/washer sys ­
tem

ger than one second.
The washe r jets extend forward o ut of the
front bumper driven by water pressure to
spray the front headlights with water.
You shou ld inspect the headlights regularly
(for example when refue ling) and clean
off
any solid dirt or insects from the lenses .
To ensure the system wo rks properly in winter,
keep the washer jets free o f snow and remove
any ice using a de- ic ing spray.
Service position
It is only possible to change wiper blades if
you move the wiper arms to the service posi ­
tion .
In o rder to use the windsh ie ld w ipers, the
front lid must be comp letely closed .

A WARNING
Improper use of the cigarette lighter can
cause ser ious injury or start a fire .
- Be careful when using the cigarette light­
er. If you do not pay attention to what
you are do ing when you are using the cig ­
arette lighter you can burn yourself .

-To avoid damaging the socket, only use
plugs that fit properly.
- Only use the cigarette lighter socket as a
power source for e lectr ica l accessories
for short durations . Use the sockets in
the vehicle when a power source is need­
ed for longer durations .

-When the engine is off and accessories

cle battery can still be d rained .
- The ve hicle battery must not be charged
w ith a standard small charger that pl ugs

Outlet

General
A WARNING
-Always remove objec ts from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
cou ld slide around inside the vehicle
wh ile driving or when acce lerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner.
- When you are drivi ng make sure tha t
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage lo cations
cannot fa ll out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, depress th e clutch or acceler­
ate.
-Any articles of cloth ing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's v iew. The coat hooks are desig ned
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with ha rd, po inted or heavy
objects in the pocke ts on the coat hooks.
Dur ing sudden braking or in an acciden t -
especially if the airbag is deployed -
-
these objects co uld injure any passen­
gers inside the vehicle.
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked.

The air conditioning automatically maintains the selected temperature in the vehicle interior
throughout each season .

We recommend the following sett ing :
> Rotate the knob ¢ fig. 68 @to the right to
switch on the air conditioning .
> Set the temperature to 72 °F (22 °() .

Using the previously recommended setting is
the quickest way to achieve a comfortable cli ­
mate in the vehicle . This setting should there­
fore only be changed when persona l comfort
l eve ls or ce rtain circumstances requi re it .
The climate controls are a combination of au ­
tomatic heating and ventilation systems and a
coo ling system which dehumidifies and coo ls
the air ins ide the veh icle.
The climate controls automatically maintain a temperature once it has been set . The tem­
perat ure of the air from the vents, fan speed
(air vol ume) and ai r d ist ribution are also auto­
mat ical ly adjusted . The system also takes into
account strong s unshine so that manua l ad­
justment is not necessary. So in almost all cases,
a ut om at ic mode offers the best cond i­
tions for the comfort of the occupants at all
times of the year ¢

Please not e:
In cooling mode , relative humidity in the inte­
rior is reduced . This prevents the w indows
from fogg ing up.
When relative hum idity and temperatures
outside are high ,
conden sati on can drip from
the a ir condition ing evaporator and form a
pool of water under the vehicle. This is normal
and not an ind ication of a leak!
When outs ide temperatures are low, the fan
does not switch to a higher speed until the
coolant has reached an adequate tempera ­
tu re, with the exception of the defrost set­
t ing.
When accelerating at wide-open throttle, the air conditioning compressor is temporarily
switched off to ma intain full engine power .
In order to ensure engine cooling under ex­
treme engine loads, the compressor is switch­ ed off if coolant temperatures climb too high.
Funct ions are set by turning the rotary knob
or switched on and off by tapp ing the buttons.

air inside the vehicle . Air temperature, vol­
ume , and distribution are controlled automat­
ically to reach or maintain the desired interior
temperature as quickly as possib le. Fluctua­
tions in exterior temperature and the effects
of temperature from the posi tion o f the sun
are compensated for automat ically.
Manual air recirculation mode~
The recirculation mode prevent s polluted out­
side air from entering the vehicle interior .

T he air is not coo led and humidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off.

If the LED in the switch stays on after A/C
ope ration has been switched off(= switch­
i ng the A/C off), there is a fault in an air
cond itioning component. Please consult
an authorized Audi dealer when there is an
operat ing problem.

Economical use of the clima te controls helps
to save fuel .
