Driver information
system
Introduction
The Driver information display inside the in ­
strument cluster provides you, the driver ,
with important information.

With the igni tion on, the display in the Dr iver
I nformation System shows the fo llow ing in­
formation :
- CD* inserted or Radio* station set
- Outs ide temperature* : At temperatures be-
low 41 °F (+ 5 °C), a snowflake symbol ap­
pears in front of the tempe rature d isplay

- Wa rning: front lid , door or eng ine compart­
ment lid open: The disp lay appea rs if the
door, the eng ine compartmen t lid or front
li d is no t closed.

Some f unctions and vehicle components are
scanned for the ir operating status when you
s witch the ign ition on and whi le you are driv­
ing . Malfunctions or required service proce­
dures are s ignaled audibly and ind icated by
red and yellow illuminated symbols and re­
minders in t he d isplay.

- Neve r rely ex clusively o n the o utside
tempera ture display to de termine if a
road surface is icy or not. Keep in m ind
that road surfaces, espec ially br idges
and overpasses, co uld be ice covered and
slippery even at an outside temperature

-Always remember, even if the "snow­
f lake" symbo l (ice warning) does not ap­
pear in the d isplay, black ice co uld be on
the road .

- If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are
dr iving at a very low speed , the tempera­
t u re shown in the d isplay might be
slightly h igher than the actua l o utside
tempe rature. Thi s is caused by the heat
be ing rad iated from t he engine.
- On ve hicles with Audi Nav igation sys­
tem*, the disp lays may differ from their
normal appe aran ce during navig ation.

Master key with remote control
The remote control allows you to lock or un­
lock the vehicle electronically .
The transmitter and battery are located in the
head of the remote control. The receiver is lo­
cated inside the vehicle. The maximum effec ­
tive range depends on several things . Remem­
ber, if the battery is wea k, the effective range
decreases.
If you need to replace the remote control, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your author ized Audi dealer. Only then can
you use the key again.
(D Tips
- If the ignition is sw itched on, the remote
control system is deactivated .
- The remote control system can be affect­ ed by other systems operating in the
same frequency range close to the vehi­
cle, such as mobi le telephones, televi­
sion broadcasting stations, etc.

Master key battery replacement
Each master key contains a battery housed
under the cover .

The replacement battery must be the
same specification as the origina l.
Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer helps to prevent unauthor­
ized use of your vehicle.
A computer chip ins ide your key automatica lly
deactivates the electron ic immobilizer when
you insert the key in the ign ition lock. When
you remove the key from the ignition lock, the
electronic immobilizer is automatically acti­
vated once again.
A WARNING
---
Always take the key with you when you leave the vehicle. The key can disarm the
electronic engine immobilizer and permit
an unauthorized person to start the engine
and enable operation of the vehicle sys ­
tems such as power w indow leading to se­
rious pe rsonal injury.
(D Tips
- T he ve hicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used. The vehicle may not
start if another radio device s uch as a key
for another vehicle or a transponder is
located on the key ring .

-The operation of the remote control key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer­
ence from transmitters in the vicinity of
the vehicle working in the same frequen­
cy range (e.g. a cell phone, radio equip­
ment) .
- In order to make sure the locking func­
tion is working, you should always keep
your eye on the vehicle to make sure it is
properly locked .
- Do not use the remote control if you are
inside the car, otherwise you may unin­
tentionally lock the vehicle, and then you
would set off the anti-theft alarm when
you try to start the engine or open a
door. In case this happens anyhow, push
the unlock button
CD .
- Use the panic function only if you are in
an emergency situation.
Resetting the remote control
The remote control must be reset if the vehi­
cle does not unlock .
.,,. Press the unlock button CD on the remote
control.
.,,. Manually unlock the driver's door lock with
the mechanical key within 30 seconds.
.,,. Press either the lock-
lD or the unlock CD but­

Operating locks with the key
To lock and unlock the vehicle from the out­
side , turn the key in the lock of the driver's
door .

Locking and unlocking the vehicle from
inside
The vehicle can be locked or unlocked from
the inside using the power locking switch .

If you lock the vehicle using the power locking
switch , please note the following:
- You cannot open the doors or the rear lid
from the
outside (increased security, for ex ­
ample when you are stopped at a red light).
- You can unlock and open the doors from the
inside by pulling on the door handle .
-If the driver's door is opened (after you have
locked the vehicle from the inside using the
power locking switch), the door will remain
unlocked to prevent you from locking your­
self out of your vehicle. After you close the
door, you have to lock the driver 's door
again.
- If you have a crash and the airbag is activat-
ed, the doors automatically unlock. ..,.

tion of this button may vary by manufac­
turer).
12. Press and release the learn button on the
garage door opener motor .

step.
13. On the Homelink ® keypad inside the vehi­
cle , fi rm ly press and hold the Homel ink ®
bu tton prev ious ly programmed in phases
1 and 2 for two seconds and release. Re­
peat this sequence
twice.
.,. Some vehicles may require the press/hold/
release sequence up to three times to com­
plete the trai ning process .
.,. Homelink ® should now activate your rolling
code equipped device .
If the 5 minute time limit is exceeded , the
emergency flash ers will flash one time to in ­
dicate that the process has been term inated .
In this case, repeat steps 4 through 9.
If the emergency flashers do not flash
three
t imes (after about 15 -60 seconds) , program­
ming was not successful. In this case, repeat
steps 4 through 9 .
Remote contro l units for garage door openers
in Canada are set to stop transmitting radio
frequency sig nals afte r two seconds. This t ime ..,.

may not be sufficient for the Homelink® sys­
tem to learn the radio frequency signal. Per­ form all other steps as described above .
Operating the Homelink® transmitter
The HomeLink ® transmitter works in the
same manner as the original hand held re­
mote control that came with the system.

Reprogramming a single button
A HomeLink ® button can be reprogrammed
individually without affecting the other but­ t on allocations.

Erasing the programming of the
Homelink ® transmitter
When you erase the programming, the pro ·
gramming on all three of the transmitter channels with be lost!

~ page 88, Phase 1: programming the over­
head k eypad .
When completed, t he Homelink ® system will
be in the prog ramm ing mode and is then
r eady to learn the codes fo r remote controlled
devices.

- Programmed buttons can not be erased

- For security reasons you are advis ed to
erase the programming of the Home­
Lin k® system before you se ll yo ur vehicl e.

122 Airbag system
Repair, care and disposal of the airbags
Parts of the airbag system are installed at
many different places on your Audi. Installing,
removing, servicing or repairing a part in an
area of the vehicle can damage a part of an
airbag system and prevent that system from
working properly in a collision.
There are some important things you have to know to make sure that the effectiveness of
the system will not be impaired and that dis­
carded components do not cause injury or pol­ lute the environment.
A WARNING
Improper care, servicing and repair proce­
dures can increase the risk of personal in­
jury and death by preventing an airbag from deploying when needed or deploying
an airbag unexpectedly:
- Never cover, obstruct, or change the
steering wheel horn pad or airbag cover
or the instrument panel or modify them
in any way.
- Never attach any objects such as cup
holders or telephone mountings to the
surfaces covering the airbag units.
- For cleaning the horn pad or instrument
panel, use only a soft, dry cloth or one
moistened with plain water. Solvents or
cleaners could damage the airbag cover
or change the stiffness or strength of the material so that the airbag cannot de­
ploy and protect properly.
- Never repair, adjust, or change any parts
of the airbag system.
- All work on the steering wheel, instru­
ment panel, front seats or electrical sys­
tem (including the installation of audio
equipment, cellular telephones and CB
radios, etc .) must be performed by a
qualified technician who has the training
and special equipment necessary.
- For any work on the airbag system, we
strongly recommend that you see your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop. -
Never modify the front bumper or parts
of the vehicle body.
- Always make sure that the side airbag
can inflate without interference:
- Never install seat covers or replace­
ment upholstery over the front seat­
backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use additional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags inflate.
- Damage to the original seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air­
bag module must always be repaired
immediately by an authorized Audi
dealer.
- The airbag system can be activated only
once. After an airbag has inflated, it
must be replaced by an authorized Audi
dealer or qualified technician who has
the technical information, training and
special equipment necessary.
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once. After an airbag has been deployed,
it must be replaced with new replace­
ment parts designed and approved espe­
cially for your Audi model version. Re­
placement of complete airbag systems
or airbag components must be per­
formed by qualified workshops only.
Make sure that any airbag service action
is entered in your Audi Warranty & Main­
tenance booklet under
AIRBAG REPLACE­
MENT RECORD.
- For safety reasons in severe accidents,
the alternator and starter are separated
from the vehicle battery with a pyrotech­ nic circuit interrupter.
- Work on the pyrotechnic circuit inter­
rupter must only be performed by a
qualified dealer -risk of an accident!
- If the vehicle or the circuit interrupter
is scrapped, all applicable safety pre­
cautions must be followed.

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining
starting capability.
The battery is severely taxed in short-distance
driving, in city traffic and during the co ld time
of year. Abundant e lectrica l energy is re­
quired, but only a litt le is generated. It is also
cr itical if the engine is not run ning and electri­
cal components are turned on. In th is in­
stance energy is being consumed but non e is
be ing gene rated.
It is in precisely these situations that you w ill
notice energy management actively regulat ­
in g the distribution of energy .
Vehicle stands for an extended period
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period
of several days or weeks, electrical compo­
nents are gradually cut back or switched off.
This reduces energy consumption and mai n­
tains sta rting capab ility over a longer per iod.
Take into consideration that when you un lock
your ve hicle, some co nvenience functions,
such as the remote key or power seat adjust ­
ment, may not be available . The convenience
f u nctions w ill be ava ilable again whe n you
turn on the igni tion and star t the eng ine.
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with
the eng ine turned off, the battery is being dis­
charged .

If starting capability is jeo pardi zed d ue to en ­
ergy consumption, a message appears in the
drive r information d isplay .
You have to start t he engine to charge the
batte ry .
With the engine running
Although e lectrical energy is generated when
the ve hicl e is being driven, t he battery can be­
c ome disc harged. This happe ns mostly when
li ttle energy is being generated and a g reat
deal consumed and t he battery's sta te of
c h arge is not optimal.
T o b ring the energy b alance b ack into equili ­
br ium, consumers which requ ire espe cially
la rge amounts of energy a re temporari ly cut
back or switched off . Heating systems in pa r­
ticu lar require a great deal of energy. If yo u
notice, for example, that the heated seats* or
the heated rear window are not heating, they
have been temporarily cut back or sw itched
off . These systems w ill be available again as
soon as the ene rgy balance has been restored.
You w ill also notice that engine id le speed has
been increased slightly . T hi s is normal and not
a cause for conce rn . By i ncreas ing eng ine id le
speed the additional energy r equired is gene r­
ated and the battery is charged.
Driver notification in the instrument
cluster display
If battery power drops into the range where it
can limit the ability of the engine to start, this
is shown in the instrument cluster display
with the following driver message:
(•) Low battery charge: battery will be
charged while driving
T his no tificat ion reminds yo u that the star ting
capability of the engine may be lim ited . As
soon as you sta rt dr iving again, the battery
will be recharged and the not ificat ion w ill go
out. •

the rims longer than specified on the label. If
not rinsed off promptly, the acid contained in
some cleaners can attack the threads on the
wheel bolts.
Never use abrasive or metal polishing clean­
ing agents. If the protective coating has been
chipped, e.g. by kicked up road dirt, touch it
up as soon as possible.

Test the brakes carefully
each time you wash the vehicle.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS and other information

Body cavity sealing
The body cavity sealing does not need to be
checked.
-
All body cavities which could be affected by
corrosion have been given thorough protec­
tion at the factory.
This sealing does not require any inspection or
additional treatment. If any wax should seep
out of the cav ity when the ambient tempera­
ture is high, it can be removed with a plastic
scraper and a suitable solvent.
A WARNING
, -
Solvents can be dangerous.
- Benzine is flammable and toxic. If you use benzine for removing the wax, keep
sparks, flame and lighted cigarettes
away. Never dump benzine on the
ground, into open streams or down sew­
age drains.
- Be sure to observe all safety and environ­
mental regulations. Follow all instruc­
tions on the container.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS and
the information
¢page 164.
Chassis
Have the undercoating checked for damage
from time to time.
The lower body shell of your Audi is also thor­
oughly protected against corrosion.
Any damage to the undercoating caused by
road hazards should be repaired promptly.
A WARNING
-Too much undercoating in the wrong pla-
ces can cause a fire.
- Do not apply additional undercoating or
rustproofing on or near the exhaust
manifold, exhaust pipes, catalytic con­
verter or heat shields. While driving, the
substance used for undercoating could
overheat and cause a fire.
-Always read and heed all WARNINGS and

page 164.
Exhaust tail pipes
Road salt and other corrosive materials will
damage the material in the exhaust tail pipes
if they are not cleaned regularly. Do not clean
the tail pipes with wheel cleaner, paint polish, chrome polish or other abrasive cleaners.
Clean the tail pipes with car care products
t h at are suitable for stainle ss steel.
Your authorized Audi dealer can provide clean­ ing products that have been tested and ap­
proved for your vehicle.
Care of interior
Radio-/Navigation* display
.. Clean the display with a soft clean cloth and
an LCD cleaner.
The display can be cleaned with a professio­
nally available "LCD cleaner ". The cloth should
be slightly dampened with the cleaning fluid
to clean the display. .,.

When charging at low voltages (e.g . w ith a
tri ckle charger ), the battery cables do not
have to be d isconnected first. Be fore charging
at
high voltages, i.e. " fast charging ", you
must disconnect both cables. In e ither case,
follow the instruct ions from the ma nufacturer
of the charger .

- Fast charg ing a battery is dangerous and
shou ld on ly be attempted by a compe­
tent technician w ith the proper eq uip­
me nt.
- Battery acid that may spill d uring charg­
ing should be washed
off wit h a so lution
of warm water and baki ng soda to neu ­
t raliz e the aci d.

Neve r use a fast charger as a booster to
start the eng ine. Th is w ill seriously dam­
age sensit ive e lectronic components, such
as cont ro l units, re lays, radio, etc. , as well
as the battery charge r.

The vehicle batte ry must not be charged
with a standard small charger that plugs in to the c igarette lighter or outlet.

Clean wa ter should be used when filling up. If

-Never mount used tires on yo ur vehicle if
yo u are not sure of their "previous histo­
ry." Old used tires may have been dam­
aged even though the damage cannot be
seen that can lead to sudden tire failure
and loss of vehicle control.
- If you notice unusual vibration or if the
vehicle pulls to one side when d riving, al­
ways stop as soon as it is safe to do so
and check the wheels and tires for dam­
age .

Accessory weight
means the comb ined weight (in excess of
those sta ndard items which may be rep laced)
of au toma tic transmission, power steer ing ,
power brakes, power windows, power seats,
radio, and heater, to the extent that these
items are availab le as factory-installed equip­
ment (whether installed or not) .
Aspect ratio
means the rat io o f the height to the w idth of
the tire in percent . Numbers of 55 or lower in ­
dicate a low sidewall for improved steering re­
sponse and better overa ll handling on dry
pavement .
Bead
means the part of the t ire t hat is made o f
steel wires, wrapped or reinforced by ply cords
and that is shaped to fit the r im.
Bead separation
means a b reakdown of the bond between
components in the bead .
Cord
means the strands forming the plies in the
tire.

which affects tract ion and brak ing ability.
If summer t ires are used i n very co ld tem ­

that can cause loud driving noise and un­
