Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
cool down. Always exercise extreme cau
t ion when working under the hood

Overview
Some ind icator lights tu rn on briefly to che ck
the func tion of that system when yo u switch
the ignition on. These systems are marked
with a./ in the following tables. If one of
these ind icator lights does not turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system.

BRAKE/ ((D) Brake system
This warning/indicator Light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is a malfunction in the ABS, or when the park
ing brake is set.
If the - (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) symbo l flashes in the display with the
parking brake released, there is a malfunction
in the brake system . In addition to the sym
bol, one of two messages appears in the dis
play:
Stop veh icle and chec k bra ke fl uid le vel
Stab ilization pr ogram and AB S fau lt! See

"' Pull off the road and stop the veh icle .
"' Obta in profess ional assistance.
USA models: if there is a malfunct ion in the
ABS system, the

If the brak e warni ng lig ht does not li ght up
when the en gin e is c ranking or the p arking
bra ke i s applied, ther e m ay be a malfunct ion
in the elec trical system. In thi s cas e, cont act
y ou r Audi dealer.
If the ABS fails, the ABS warning/ind icator
light

When the light comes on, an audib le warning
signal is also given .
Parking brak e set
The parking brake wa rning light _ /_
(Canada models) illuminates when the park
ing brake is set. In addition, a wa rning tone
will sound after you have driven for longer
than 3 seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/
h) .
Par king brak e set
The ~ warning/ind icator light i lluminates
when the parking brake is set¢,& .

-Always observe the warnings in
¢ page 174, Engine compartment, be
fore opening the engine hood and check
ing the brake fluid.
- Driv ing with low brake fluid is a safety
ha zard! Stop the car and get professional
assistance.
- USA models: If both, the~ warning
light and the
l;S warning light come
on at the same t ime, the rear wheels
could lock up first under hard braking.
Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes can
cause loss of vehicle cont rol and an acci
dent . Have yo ur vehicle repaired immed i- ately by your a
uthorized Audi dealer or a
qualif ied workshop. Drive s low ly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application .
-Canada models: If both, the brake warn
ing light . and the ABS warn ing light
liJ come on at the same time, the rear
wheels could lock up f irst under hard
brak ing . Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss of veh icle control and an
accident. Have your vehicle repai red im
mediately by your author ized Audi dealer
or a qualified wo rkshop . Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application.
- If the b rake wa rning/ind icator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is re leased, or lights up
while you are dr iving, the flu id leve l in
the brake flu id reservo ir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immed iate ly at low speed to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or qualified work
shop and have the brake system inspect
ed.
- Always keep in mind that after several
brake applications, you will need greater
p ressu re on the b rake pedal to stop you r
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping powe r
in critical situations . You must allow for
increased braking distances . The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could lead to an accident .
t!i1 !.!r Safety systems
The I (USA models)/ . (Canada models) in
dicator light mon itors the safety systems e .g .
(airbags , pretens ioners) and illuminates fo r a
few seconds each time you switch the ign it ion
on.
If the
I (USA models) /. (Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi
nates while you are driving, or if it starts to
blink , then there is a malfunction somewhe re
in the system. If the ligh t does not i llum inate
when you switch on the ignition, this also
means there is a malfunc tion .

sistance if necessary.
If the engine coolant level is co rrect, then the
radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc
tion.
If the generator wa rning/ind icator light
should also illuminate
r:!:> page 16, then the
fan belt may be damaged.
A WARNING
- If your vehicle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights

-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escap ing from the en
gine compartment - you risk being scald
ed . Wait until you can no longe r see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any ve hicle
is a da ngerous a rea. Before you perfo rm
any wor k in the engine compartment,
turn off the engi ne and a llow i t to cool.

eng ine cooling system -you co ul d damage
your eng ine.
@ Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator lig ht illuminates w hile you are
driving, there is a malfunction in the electro
mechanical steering. If the ind icator light is
show ing ,£"~ . there may be a reduction in pow
er steering assist. If the ind icator light is
show ing . , there may be a total loss of pow
e r steering assist. The stee ring m ust be in
spected immediately by a qua lified wor kshop
¢ ,&. .With the engine no t running (e.g. when
the car is being towed), there is a lso no power
assist avai lab le .
A WARNING
-
If there is a ma lf u nction, the indicator
light for the electro-mechanical power as
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis
tance.
~ Clutch pedal
App lies to vehicles: wit h manual transmiss ion
T he ind icator light [~l ill uminates if you do
not press the clu tch pedal when s ta rting the
engine. For safety reasons, the eng ine will on
ly start when the clutch peda l is pressed.
;;,I C; Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the hJ indicator lamp blinks while dr iv ing,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regu lation) is active
ly regulating .
If the
G! indicator lamp illuminates, the sys
tem has switched the ESC off. In th is case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func
t ion ing complete ly when the ind icator lamp
swi tches off.
If the
I) indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off w ith the
[ru button .
Stabilization program and AB S fault! See
owner 's manual
If the G! indicator lamp and the [I] ABS indi
cator lamp illum inate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electron ic different ia l lock
is malfunct io ning . This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes still function with their nor
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authori zed A udi dealer immedi
ate ly to have the malfunction corrected .

{i§l) Anti-lock brake system
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light & (USA mod
els)
;tlJ (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on .
The l ight will go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illumi
nate when you switch the ign ition on .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds .
- The warning/indicator light illuminates wh ile driving.
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes
sage
Stabilization program and ABS: fault!
See owner's manual
also appears in the in
strument cluster display and a warning tone
sounds .
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 14 and the
ABS warning illuminate
together there may be
a malfunction in the ABS, and there may also
be a ma lfunction in the brake system itself
¢ ,&.. The ABS will not work and you will no
tice a change in braking response and per
formance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake
system

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together with the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the
EDL system

See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible.
A WARNING

- If the E (USA mode ls)l ii] (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on whi le driving, the ABS
system is not work ing properly . The vehi
cle can then be stopped only with the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protection ABS provides.
Contact your Audi dea ler as soon as pos
sible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning ligh t,
the
J;.J warning light and the & warn
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels could lock up first under hard
brak ing. Rear wheel lock-up can cause
loss of vehicle control and an accident.
Have your vehicle repaired immediately
by your authorized Audi dealer or a quali
fied workshop. Dr ive slow ly and avoid
sudden, hard brake applications.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light ., the
DJ warning light and the
ABS warning light
[( Gi a come on together,
the rear wheels could lock up first under
hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle contro l and an acci
dent . Have your vehicle repaired immedi
ately by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop. Drive s lowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake applications.

contact your authori zed Audi dealer or quali
fied workshop to have all brake pads inspect
ed . On USA models the warn ing light

comes on together with the warning light
1111. Both sets of brake pads on an ax le
must always be replaced at the same time.

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control.
The ~ warn ing/ indicator light (Electron ic
Power Control) illuminates when you switch
on the ignition as a function check .

If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are dr iving, then there is a mal
function in the engine elect ron ics. Have
t he malfunction co rrected as soon as pos
sible by you r autho rized Aud i dea ler o r
qualif ied workshop .
~ Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The symbol
l\l lights up when the ignition is
turned on and will turn off after the engine
h as started and has settled at constant idle
speed . Th is ind icates that the MIL is working
properly .
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunct ion i n the engine electronic system.
Contact your author ized Audi dealer and have
the ma lfunction corrected.

The Ill symbol illum inates when there is an
engine contro l ma lf u nction . The indicator
li ght ~ in the instrume nt cl uster a lso illumi
na tes. The engi ne speed is l imited to the
speed displayed in the driver in format ion sys
tem. Keep in mind that the engine speed wi ll
not exceed the val ue disp layed in the driver in
format ion system, for example when down
shifting.
P lease go to an au thorized A udi dealer or oth
er qualified wo rkshop to have the malfunctio n
repaired.

ability.
If this message turns off afte r a little while,
the battery charged enough while d rivi ng .
If the message does not turn off, have yo ur
authorized Aud i dea ler or qualified workshop
correct the malfunction .

Bi) Fuel supply too low
When the (g symbol illuminates, this means
there are about 1.9 gallons (7 liters) of fuel
left in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

If the symbol lights up, even when there is
ample fuel in the tank, and the text
Tank sys
tem malfunction! Please contact workshop
appears in the display, there is a fault in the
system. Contact a qualified workshop to have
the fault rectified.

Windshield washer fluid level too
low
If the Ill symbol illuminates, add w indshield
washer f luid to the washer system

® Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you
when a vehicle light bulb has become defec
tive.
If a defect ive bulb has been detected by the
system or a light bu lb burns out, the
fsl sym
bol with a message appears in the disp lay to
tell you wh ich bu lb is burnt out and where it is
l ocated. For example:
Rear left turn signal
After 5 seconds, the message disappears. If
you want to recall the message into the dis
p lay, press the CH ECK button

There are three reasons why the defective
bulb message would appear in the display:
- The light bulb has burnt out

- The fuse is "blown" Q page 228, Replacing
fuses.
- The wire connection to the light bu lb is de-
fective.
H ave the bu lb rep laced or the connection re
pa ired by your a uthorized Audi Service depart
ment.
A WARNING
- Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex
plode wh ile they are being changed caus
ing serious pe rsonal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
h igh-voltage sect ion of gas discharge
(xenon) lamps. Fa iling to do so could re
sult in death or serious injury!
BRAKE LIGHT t<® > Brake light defective
In case of a ma lfunction or component fail-
ure, the symbo l (USA models)/

repaired or replaced, as necessary:
- Brake light bulbs
- All wir ing connections
- Brake light switch
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler for assis
tance if necessary.

Why is your seat adjustment so
important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjust ing the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
-your body is prope rly supported thus reduc
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and airbag system can offer
maximum protection

In the following sec tions, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust you r seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for insta lling a child safety seat on the front
passenger's seat. Always heed the informa
tion rega rd ing child safety provided in
~ page 130, Child Safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal in jury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the w indow or on top of the seat cush
ion! This applies espec ially to the passen
gers .
If your seating position is incorrect
yo u increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an acc ident.
If the
airbag infla tes and the seating position
is incorrect this could result in personal
injury or even death.
- It is import ant for bo th the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between them
selves and the steering wheel and/or in
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the a irbag system can
not protect you properly . In addition to
this, the front seats and head restra ints
must be adjusted to your body height so
that they can give you max imum protec
tion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the s teer
ing wheel or instrument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's o r fron t pa s
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpected ly, caus
ing sudden loss of vehicle contro l and
personal injury . If you ad just yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, you are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the driver's
seat in the fo llowing manner:
.,. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so
t ha t you can easily p ush the peda ls to the
floor wh ile keeping your knee slightly bent

.,. Adjust the seatback so that when you sit
w ith your back against the seatback, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.

Never place any objects in the dr iver's foot-
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal function. In
