Parking brak e set
The parking brake wa rning light _ /_
(Canada models) illuminates when the park­
ing brake is set. In addition, a wa rning tone
will sound after you have driven for longer
than 3 seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/
h) .
Par king brak e set
The ~ warning/ind icator light i lluminates
when the parking brake is set¢,& .

-Always observe the warnings in
¢ page 174, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the engine hood and check­
ing the brake fluid.
- Driv ing with low brake fluid is a safety
ha zard! Stop the car and get professional
assistance.
- USA models: If both, the~ warning
light and the
l;S warning light come
on at the same t ime, the rear wheels
could lock up first under hard braking.
Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes can
cause loss of vehicle cont rol and an acci­
dent . Have yo ur vehicle repaired immed i- ately by your a
uthorized Audi dealer or a
qualif ied workshop. Drive s low ly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application .
-Canada models: If both, the brake warn­
ing light . and the ABS warn ing light
liJ come on at the same time, the rear
wheels could lock up f irst under hard
brak ing . Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss of veh icle control and an
accident. Have your vehicle repai red im­
mediately by your author ized Audi dealer
or a qualified wo rkshop . Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application.
- If the b rake wa rning/ind icator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is re leased, or lights up
while you are dr iving, the flu id leve l in
the brake flu id reservo ir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immed iate ly at low speed to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop and have the brake system inspect­
ed.
- Always keep in mind that after several
brake applications, you will need greater
p ressu re on the b rake pedal to stop you r
veh icle. Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with max imum stopping powe r
in critical situations . You must allow for
increased braking distances . The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could lead to an accident .
t!i1 !.!r Safety systems
The I (USA models)/ . (Canada models) in­
dicator light mon itors the safety systems e .g .
(airbags , pretens ioners) and illuminates fo r a
few seconds each time you switch the ign it ion
on.
If the
I (USA models) /. (Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi­
nates while you are driving, or if it starts to
blink , then there is a malfunction somewhe re
in the system. If the ligh t does not i llum inate
when you switch on the ignition, this also
means there is a malfunc tion .

If the engine coolant level is co rrect, then the
radiator fan may be the cause of the malfunc­
tion.
If the generator wa rning/ind icator light
should also illuminate

A WARNING
- If your vehicle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard
warning lights

-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escap ing from the en­
gine compartment - you risk being scald­
ed . Wait until you can no longe r see or
hear steam or coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any ve hicle
is a da ngerous a rea. Before you perfo rm
any wor k in the engine compartment,
turn off the engi ne and a llow i t to cool.

@ Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator lig ht illuminates w hile you are
driving, there is a malfunction in the electro­
mechanical steering. If the ind icator light is
show ing ,£"~ . there may be a reduction in pow­
er steering assist. If the ind icator light is
show ing . , there may be a total loss of pow­
e r steering assist. The stee ring m ust be in­
spected immediately by a qua lified wor kshop
¢ ,&. .With the engine no t running (e.g. when
the car is being towed), there is a lso no power
assist avai lab le .
A WARNING
-
If there is a ma lf u nction, the indicator
light for the electro-mechanical power as­
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis­
tance.
~ Clutch pedal
App lies to vehicles: wit h manual transmiss ion
T he ind icator light [~l ill uminates if you do
not press the clu tch pedal when s ta rting the
engine. For safety reasons, the eng ine will on ­
ly start when the clutch peda l is pressed.
;;,I C; Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the hJ indicator lamp blinks while dr iv ing,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regu lation) is active ­
ly regulating .
If the
G! indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC off. In th is case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func­
t ion ing complete ly when the ind icator lamp
swi tches off.
If the
I) indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched off w ith the
[ru button .
Stabilization program and AB S fault! See
owner 's manual
If the G! indicator lamp and the [I] ABS indi­
cator lamp illum inate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electron ic different ia l lock
is malfunct io ning . This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes still function with their nor ­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authori zed A udi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the malfunction corrected .

{i§l) Anti-lock brake system
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light & (USA mod­
els)
;tlJ (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on .
The l ight will go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illumi­
nate when you switch the ign ition on .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds .
- The warning/indicator light illuminates wh ile driving.
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes­
sage
Stabilization program and ABS: fault!
See owner's manual
also appears in the in­
strument cluster display and a warning tone
sounds .
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 14 and the
ABS warning illuminate
together there may be
a malfunction in the ABS, and there may also
be a ma lfunction in the brake system itself
¢ ,&.. The ABS will not work and you will no­
tice a change in braking response and per­
formance.

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together with the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the
EDL system

See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible.

- If the E (USA mode ls)l ii] (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on whi le driving, the ABS
system is not work ing properly . The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only with the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protection ABS provides.
Contact your Audi dea ler as soon as pos­
sible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning ligh t,
the
J;.J warning light and the & warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels could lock up first under hard
brak ing. Rear wheel lock-up can cause

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.

turned on and will turn off after the engine
h as started and has settled at constant idle
speed . Th is ind icates that the MIL is working
properly .
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunct ion i n the engine electronic system.

Storage
General
A WARNING
-Always remove objec ts from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
cou ld slide around inside the vehicle
wh ile driving or when acce lerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner.
- When you are drivi ng make sure tha t
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage lo cations
cannot fa ll out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, depress th e clutch or acceler­
ate.
-Any articles of cloth ing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's v iew. The coat hooks are desig ned
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with ha rd, po inted or heavy
objects in the pocke ts on the coat hooks.
Dur ing sudden braking or in an acciden t -
especially if the airbag is deployed -
-
these objects co uld injure any passen­
gers inside the vehicle.
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked.

To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to
reduce exhaust emissions, do not let your
veh icle stand and warm up. Be ready to
drive off immediately after starting your
veh icle. Maintain moderate speed until the
eng ine is completely warm . Remember,
the engine performs best at operating
temperature .
Stopping the engine
~ Turn the ign ition key to position @
~page 71, fig. 71.
_& WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop. The
full function of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and serious injur ies.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned
off the engine and removed the
ignition key . The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
CD Note
Do not stop the engine immed iate ly after
hard or extended driving. Keep the engine
running for approximately two minutes to
prevent excessive heat build-up.

The parking brake warning comes on only af­
ter you have driven for longer than 3 seconds
and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h) .

(USA)/ . (CON) illuminates when the park­
ing brake is set and you switch on the ignition .
A WARNING
Always re lease the park ing brake com -
pletely. A partially engaged brake will
overheat the rear brakes, reduce their ef­
fectiveness and cause excessive wear. This
could lead to brake failure and an accident. .,.

other vehicles.
- For safety reasons, the cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traff ic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, grave l, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -risk of acc ident .
- Turn off the cruise control temporari ly
when entering turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construction zones .
- Please note that inadvertent ly "rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because t he cr uise con trol is overridden
by the driver's acce lerat ion.
(D Tips
- Vehicles with manual t ransmission: You
can attain the set speed only if the cur­
r ently e ngaged gear a llows i t and the en­
gine i s not stressed. Shift ing to a h igher
or lower gear p romp tly will allow t he en­
gine to run smoothly.
- The cruise cont ro l cannot main tain a
constant speed when driving downhill.
The vehicle will accelerate unde r its own
weig ht. Downsh ift to a lower gear or use
the brakes to slow down.
Changing speed
"' Press lever in the 0 or 0 direction
i=> page 76, fig . 75 to increase or decrease
you r speed .
"' Re lease the lever to save that speed.
You can a lso press the accelerator pedal down
to inc rease your speed, e.g . if yo u want to
pass someone . The speed you saved ea rlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler­
ator peda l.
If , however, you exceed your saved speed by
5 mph ( 10 km/h) for longe r than 5 minutes,
the cruise cont ro l w ill tu rn off tempora rily .
The symbol will go o ut but the saved speed
will be retained .

You can preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.

Switching the ignit ion off erases the saved

A WARNING
You shou ld only return to the saved speed
if it is not too fast for the current traffic
conditions -ris k of an accident!

sloping road, yo u should first app ly the park­
ing b rake firm ly and then place the selector
l ever in
P. This way, yo u do not overload the
pawl mechanism and it is eas ier to move the
selector lever out of
P .
A WARNING
- Never leave you r vehicle with the eng ine
running wh ile in gear . If you must leave
yo ur vehicle with the engine running, set
the parking bra ke and engage the pa rk
lock.
- Whe n the engine is running and the
t ransmission is in gear (D,
5 or R) or in
"tiptronic" mode, it is essentia l that you
stop the vehicle with the footbrake .
When idling, the t ransmission of power
does not stop completely- the vehicle
"creeps" .
- Do not accelerate when you change the
selector lever position with the vehicle
stationary and the engine r unning -risk
of an accident!
- Never place the selector lever in the R or
N position while the vehicle is moving -
risk of a n accide nt!
- If you have to bring your vehicle to a stop
wh ile on an incl ine, keep the foot brake
depressed all the way down so tha t the
vehicle does not start to roll backward .
You should never hold the vehicle using
the clu tch if you are going to be stopped

on an incl ine. If you do, the cl utch w ill
start to slip when it ove rheats ca used by
the constant overload. This is dangerous because if the vehicle starts to roll back­
ward, you co uld cause an acc iden t. If the
clutch should start to s lip, you w ill feel
the vehicle "jerk" and the se le ctor lever
disp lay w ill st art bl ink ing .
- Before driving down a steep slope, re­
duce your speed and shift i nto a lowe r
gea r with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the bra kes o r apply the bra ke
pe dal too often or too long. Const ant
brak ing c auses the brakes to overheat
and substantially reduces b raking per ­
formance, increases braking d istance or
causes complete fa il ur e of the brake sys ­
tem.
Hill Descent Assist
App lies to vehicles : wit h S t ronic
Hill Descent Assist helps the driver when driv­
ing down inclines .
Hill Descent Assis t is activ ate d by pressing the
brake while descending when the se lec tor lev ­
er is in D/S. The
5 tronic transmission auto­
matically shifts down to a gea r su itable for
the incline. H ill Descent Ass ist attempts to
maintai n the current veh icle speed w hen the
braking occurs, as far as physical and techn i­
ca l limits allow. It may be necessary to adjust
the speed using the brakes .
Hill Descent Assist sw itches off when the in­
cli ne leve ls out o r when the gas peda l is p ress ­
ed.
On vehicles with cruise control *

Hill Descent Assist is also act ivated when the
speed is set .
A WARNING
Hill Descent Ass ist cannot overcome physi­
cal limitations, so it may not be poss ible to
maint ain a constant vehicle speed under
all ci rcumst ances. A lways be re ady to ap­
p ly the brakes.

when you need less traction, you can switch
off ESC by pressing the button
lru . Be sure to
switch ESC on again when you no longer need
less traction.
Anti -loc k brak ing s ystem (ABS )
ABS prevents the wheels from locking up
when braking . The vehicle can still be steered
even during hard braking. Apply steady pres­
sure to the brake pedal. Do not pump the ped­
al. A puls ing in the brake pedal indicates that
the system is helping you to brake the vehicle.
B rake ass is t system
The brake assist system can decrease braking
d istance. It increases braking power when the
driver presses the brake pedal quickly in emer­
gency situations. You must press and hold the
brake pedal until the situation is over .
Anti-slip regulati on (ASR )
ASR reduces engine power when the drive
wheels begin to spin and adapts the force to
the road condit ions. This makes it easier to
start, accelerate and drive up hills.
Elect ronic diff erential lock (EDL )
The EDL brakes wheels that are spinning and
transfers the drive power to the other drive
wheel or whee ls if the vehicle is equipped with
all-wheel drive*. This function is available up
to about 60 mph (100 km/h).
In extreme cases, EDL automat ica lly switches
off to help keep the brake on the braked wheel
from overheating. EDL w ill switch on again au­
tomatically when conditions have returned to normal.
..&, WARNING
- ESC, ABS, ASR and EDL cannot ove rcome
t he laws of physics. This is espec ia lly im ­
portant on slippery or wet roads.
If the
systems begin act ing to stab ilize your ve­
hicle, you should immediately change
yo ur speed to match the road and traffic
condit ions. Do not let the increased safe­
ty provided by these systems tempt you

to take risks. Doing so will increase the
risk of a loss of vehicle control, co llision
and serious personal injuries.
- Always adapt your speed to road, traffic
and weather conditions. The risk of los­
ing control of the vehicle increases when
driving too fast, espec ially through
curves and on slippery or wet roads, and
when driving too close to vehicles up ahead. ESC, ABS, the brake assist sys­
tem, EDL and ASR cannot preven t coll i­
sions.
- Always ac celera te with spe cial care on
even, smooth s urfaces su ch as those th at
are wet or covered with ice and snow.
The drive wheels can spin even with these assistance systems that cannot al ­
ways he lp to reduce the risk of loss of ve­
hicle control.
@ Tips
- ABS and ASR only work correct ly when
all four whee ls are equipped with identi­
cal tires. D ifferent tire sizes can lead to a

-Automatic deployment: At a speed of about
75 mph (120 km/h), the rear spoiler deploys
automatically.
-Automat ic retraction: When speed drops be ­
low about SO mph (80 km/h), the rear spo il­
er retracts automatically .
Manu al mode
- Manual deployment: Tapping briefly on the
switch
