Let the engine run at idle for a few minutes to
cool off, until the indicator light turns off.

-Never open the hood if you can see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment. This increases the risk of
burns. Wait until you no longer see or hear
steam or coolant escaping.
- The
engine compartment in any vehicle can
be a
dangerous area. Stop the engine and
allow it to cool before working in the engine
compartment. Always follow the informa­
tion found in ¢page 236, Working in the

once .
• If you press a button longer (convenience open­
ing/ closing), the LED blinks several times.
•If the LED does not blink, the remote control
key battery is dead . The Ill indicator light and

battery appear. Replace the battery.
Replacing the remote control key battery
• Press the release buttons@ ¢ fig. 16 and re­
move the mechanical key.
.. Press the release buttons© ¢ fig. 17 on the
battery holder and, at the same time, pull the
battery holder out of the remote contro l key in
the direction of the arrow .
.. Insert the new battery with the"+ " facing
down .
.. Push the battery holder carefully into the mas­
ter key.

Opening and closing

Dead batteries must be disposed of using
methods that will not harm the environment.
Do not dispose of them in household trash.

mine if the entire vehicle or only the driver's door
is un locked when un locking the vehicle

arms are folded away

keep your foot on the brake in all selector
lever positions (except
P) when the engine is

this increases the risk
of an accident.

peda l when
the veh icle is stopped if a gear is
engaged. Otherwise the vehicle will start to
move immediately, even if the par king brake
is set. This coul d result in a crash.

the selector lever position while

running.
- Never leave
your vehicle with t he engine

ile in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when

-If there is a powe r failure, the sel ector lever
will not move out of the P position. The

Selector lever lock
The selector lever lock prevents you from select­
ing
o gear occidentally, causing the vehicle to
roll.

To release the selector lever lock:
... Switch on the ignition.
... Press the brake pedal while pressing the inter­
lock button.
Automatic shift lock (ASL)
The selector lever is locked in the P and N posi ­
tions when
the ignition is switched on. You must
press the brake pedal to select another position.
You must also press the interlock button if you
are moving
from the P position. The following
message appears in
the display when the selector
lever
is i n the P or N position to rem ind the driv­
er:

The automatic shift lock only functions when the
vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 1 mph
(2
km/h). At higher speeds, th e lock is automati­
cally deactivated in
the N pos ition.
The selector lever
is not locked when shifting
quickly through N, for example from R to D. This
makes
it possible to free the veh icle when it is
stuck by "rocking" it . The selector lever lock en­
gages
if the leve r stays in the N posit ion longer
than approx imately 2 seconds when t
he brake
peda l
is not pressed.

.. With the driving gear selected, press the accel­
erator pedal carefully. The parking brake will
re l
ease automatically if your safety belt is fas­
tened.
Under certain circumstances, such as driving in
the mountains, it may be useful to switch tempo­
rarily
to the manual shift program in order to
manually adjust the gears to the driving condi­
tions¢ page 68.
When parking on a level surface, simply place the
selector lever in the P position. On inclines, acti­
vate the parking brake first and then move the
selector lever to the P position ¢ page 61. This
prevents the loc kin g mechanism from being
loaded too heavily and will make it easier to
move the selector lever out of the P position.
A WARNING
-The vehicle can roll even when the engine is
switched off.
-Unintended vehicle movement can lead to
serious injuri es.
- Never leave
your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running , set
the parking brake and move the selector lev­
er to the P position.
- Power is still
transferred to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To pre­
vent the ve hicle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake when the en­
gine is running and the selector lever is in
the D, Sor R position or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
-Do not inadvertently press the accelerator
pedal when the vehicle is stationary. Other­
wise the vehicle will start to move immedi­
ately, even if the parking brake is set. T his
could resu
lt in a crash.
-
Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position while
the vehicle is stationary and the engine is
running .
Automatic transmission
-Never engage the R or P selector level posi­
tions while driving. It could cause a crash .
- Before driving
down a steep slope, reduce
your speed and shift into a lower gear with
"ti ptronic".
-Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing
distance or causes complete failure of
the brake system.
-If you must stop on an incline, always hold
the vehicle in place with the foot brake or
parking brake to prevent it from rolling
back.
- N
ever hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The
clutch opens automati­
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. The mJ indicator light turns on
and a message appears¢ page 70 when
the clutch is overloaded.
-If the engine must run while you are work­
ing
in the engine compartment with the
hood open, make sure a gear is not engag­
ed. The selector lever must be firmly in the
P position and loc ked in place and the park­
ing brake must be set¢ page 236. Other­
wise, the vehicle could begin moving when
increasing the engine speed, even with the
parking brake set.
@Note
-When stopping on an incline, do not try to
hold the veh icle in place by pressing the ac­
celerator pedal while a driving gear is se­
lected. This can cause the automatic trans­
mission to overheat and can damage it. Ac­
tivate the parking brake or press the brake
pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Allowing
the vehicle to roll when the engine
is stopped and the selector lever is in the N
position will
damage the automatic trans­
mission because it is not lubricated under
those circumstances.

@ For the sake of the environment
Even when the Emission Control System is op­
erating properly, the exhaust gas can have a
sulfur-like
exhaust gas smell under some op­
erating states. This depends on the sulfur
content of the fuel being used. Using a differ­
ent brand of fuel may help, or filling the tank
with lead-free super grade gasoline.
Engine compartment
Working in the engine compartment
Special care is required if you are working in the
engine compartment
For work in the engine compartment such as
checking and filling fluids, there is a risk of in­
jury, scald ing , accidents, and burns. For this
reason, follow all the following listed warnings
and general safety precautions. The engine
compartment is a dangerous area. ~ & .

A WARNING
-Turn the engine off.
-switch the ignition off.
-
Set the parking brake.
-
Place the selector lever in the P position.
- Let
the engine cool down.
- Never
open the hood when you see that
steam or coolant drips from the engine
compartment-there is a danger of burns!
Wait unti l no steam or coolant flows out.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment.
- Never spill fluids on a hot engine. These flu­
ids (such
as the freeze protection contained
in the coolant) can catch fire.
- Avoid
short circuits in the electrical system,
especially the battery.
-When working in the engine compartment,
remember that the radiator fan can switch
on even
if the ignition is switched off, which
increases
the risk of personal injury.

- Never open the cap on the coolant expan­
sion
tank when the engine is warm. The
cooling
system is under pressure.
-To protect your face, hands, and arms from
hot steam or coolant, cover the cap with a
large cloth when opening.
-Do not remove the engine cover under any
circumstances. This increases the risk of
burns.
-
If tests need to be performed with the en­
gine running, there is additional danger due
to moving components (such as the ribbed
belt, alternator and radiator fan) and from
the high voltage ignition system.
-Do not under any circumstances give gas in­
advertently (for example, by hand from the
engine compartment) if the vehicle is sta­
tionary but the engine is running and a gear
is engaged. Otherwise the veh icle will start
to move immediately and could result in a
crash.
-
Pay attention to the following warnings list­
ed when work on the fuel system or on the
electrical equipment is required.
- Always
disconnect the vehicle battery
from the vehicle electrical system.
-Do not smoke.
-Never work near open flames.
-Always have a working fire extinguisher
nearby
- To reduce
the risk of electric shock and in­
jury, never
touch the follow ing components
when t he engine is running or is being start­
ed:
- Ignition cable
-
Other components in the electronic high
voltage ignition system
-If you must check or perform work on the
engine while it is running:
-
Set the parking brake and place the selec­
tor lever in the P (park) position first.
- Always
proceed with extreme caution so
that clothing, jewelry or long hair do not
become caught in the radiator fan, fan
belt or other moving components or do
not come into contact with hot compo-
nents. Tie back long hair before beginning .,..

-Limit your exposure to exhaust and chemi­
cals to as short a time as possible c::> &..

Opening the hood
The hood is released from the interior.

Make sure the wiper arms are not raised up from
the windsh ield. Otherwise the paint could be
damaged.
... With the driver's door open, pull the lever be­
low the instrument panel in the direction of the
arrowc::>fig.182 .
... Raise the hood slightly c::> ,&.
... Press the lever c::>fig. 183 in the direction of the
arrow. This releases the hooks.
.. Open the hood.
.&. WARNING
Never open the hood when you see that steam
or coolant drips from the engine compart­
ment-there is a danger of burns! Wait until
no steam or coolant flows out.
Closing the hood
.. Push the hood down until you overcome the
force of the struts .
... Let the hood fall lightly into the latch. Do not

If the hood is not latched completely , it could
fly up while you are driving and obstruct your
vision.
- For safety reasons,
the hood must always be
closed securely while driving. Because of

Battery charging connections are located in the
engine comportment.

• Read the warnings ~,&.in Working on the bat­
tery on page 246 and ~ ,&..
•Switch off the ignition and all electrical equip­
ment.
• Open the hood ~page 23 7.
• Open the red cover on the positive terminal
~fig. 189.
•Clamp the charger terminal clamps to the jump
start pins according to the instructions. (pin
under the red cover= "positive", pin with hex­
agonal head= "negative").
•
Now insert the power cable for the charging de­
vice into the socket and switch the device on.
•At the end of the charging process, switch the
charger off and pull the power cable out of the
socket.
•Now remove the charging device terminal
clamps.
• Close the red cover on the positive terminal.
•Close the hood ~page 23 7.
A drained
battery can freeze at temperatures
around 32 QF (0 QC). A frozen or thawed out bat­
tery must no longer be used. The battery housing
could be cracked by
the formation of ice, which
could cause
battery acid to leak out¢& .
Battery charging (Maximum charging rate of
30 amps I 14.8 Volt)
When charging at low voltages (e.g. with a trick­
le charger ), the battery cables do not have to be
disconnected first. The battery caps should not
be opened when charging a battery.
Checking and Filling
It is not necessary to remove the battery from
the luggage compartment, and it is also not nec­
essary to disconnect the cables.
Fast charg ing the battery ( charging rate
above
14. 8 Volts)
For technical reasons do not use a battery charg­
er that uses voltage greater than 14.8 Volts to
charge your vehicle's battery.

Charging a battery can be dangerous.
-Always follow the operating instructions
provided by
the battery charger manufactur­
er when charging your battery.
-Never charge a froze n battery. It may ex­
plode because of gas trapped in the ice. Al­
low a frozen battery to thaw out first.
-
Do not reuse batteries which were frozen.
The
battery housing may have cracked and
weakened
when the battery froze.
-
Charge the battery in a well ventilated area.
Keep away
from open flame or electrical
spark.
Do not smoke. Hydrogen gas generat­
ed by the battery is explosive.
-
To reduce the danger of explosion, never
connect or disconnect charger cables while
the charger is operating.
-Fast charging a battery is dangerous and
should only be attempted by a competent
technician with the proper equipment.
-Batte ry ac id that may spill during charging
should be washed
off with a so lution of
warm water and baking soda to neutralize
t
he acid.
CD Note
Never use a fast charger as a booster to start
the engine. This will seriously damage sensi­
tive electronic components, such as control
units, relays, radio,
etc., as well as the battery
charger.
Tips
Only charge the battery through the connec­
tions in the engine compartment.
