A WARNING
Spilled hot liquid can increase the risk of acci­
dents and injuries.
- Never drive with containers that conta in hot
liquid such as coffee o r tea. The hot liquid
cou ld spill and ca use bu rns d uring a co lli­
sion, sudden braking or other vehicle move ­
ment. Spilled hot liquid can a lso in crease
the risk of accidents and injur ies .
- Only use soft contai ne rs in the cup ho lders.
Hard cups and g lasses can increase the risk
of injury during a collision .
- Never use the cup holder or the adapter as
an ashtray -this is a fire hazard .
Seats and storag e
(D Note
Beverage containers in the cup holders should
a lways have a lid . If not, beverages could spill
and cause damage to veh icle equipment, such
electron ics or seat covers.
Additional storage compartments
You w ill find a range of storage compartments
and holders at d ifferent locat ions in the vehicle.
- Compartments in the doors
- Storage area in the glove compartment . The
glove compartment can be locked using the
mechanical key¢
page 26.
-Storage compartment under the center arm­
rest*
- Storage compartment on the rear side of the
front seat*. The compartment can hold a maxi­
mum weight of 2.2 lbs (1 kg).
- Coat hooks
A WARNING
- No heavy or hard objects may be p laced on
the storage compartment behind the rear
seat backrest. There is a risk of inju ring the
veh icle passengers when braking sudde nly .
- Always leave the lid on the glove compa rt­
ment cover closed whil e driv ing to red uce
the r isk of inju ry.
- O nly use the storage compartments in the
door trim panels to store sma ll objects tha t
will not stick out of the compartment a nd
impair the ra nge of the side airbags.
- Make sure that the v iew to the rear is not
obs truc ted by hanging ga rments.
- H ang o nly lightweight clothing and be sure
that the re are no heavy or sharp-edged ob­
jects in the po ckets.
- Do not use coat hange rs to hang the cloth­
ing be ca use this could impair the effec tive­
ness of the side air bags*.

Roof rack
The roof rack must only be secured in the posi­
tioning bolt area.

If luggage or cargo is to be carried on the roof,
you must observe the following:
- Yo ur vehicle has ae rodynami c rain channels
molded in to the roof . T h is is why convent ional
roo f luggage racks ca nnot be used . We recom ­
mend using roof rails from the Aud i Genu ine
Accessories program.
- These roof rai ls are the bas is for a complete
roof rack system . For safety reasons, some ad­
ditional attachments are necessary to transport luggage, bicycles, surf boards, skis and small
boats safely . All these components are availa­
ble at yo ur authorized Aud i dealer .
- The permitted roof load for your veh icle is 165
lbs (75 kg) . The roof load is a combination of
the weight of the carrier system and the cargo .
- When using roof rack systems with a lower load
capacity, you cannot use the maximum permis­
s ible roof load . In this case, the roof rack can
o nly be loaded to the weight lim it given in the
i nstallation guide.
Inst allation
When installing the support feet, make sure they
are only placed in the positioning bolt area be­
tween the side wa ll frame and the roof frame
trim ¢

- The cargo must be secure ly attached on the
roof rack; otherw ise you increase the r isk of
an accident .
- You must u nder no circ umstances exceed
the permissible roof load, the permissible
axle loads o r the pe rm issib le overa ll we ight
of yo ur vehicle be cause this increases the
ris k of an a cc iden t.
- Please note that there is a h igher r is k of an
accident when transporting heavy objec ts or
objec ts wi th a l arge sur face on the roof r ack,
since the handling characterist ics change
due to a shift in the center of gravity or the
greater surface area exposed to the wind . So
adapt your driving and speed to the actual
conditions.

If yo u use ot her roof l uggage rack systems or
do not install the racks as intended, any dam­
age to the vehicle is not covered by the war­ ranty . Carefu lly follow the assembly and in­
stallation instructions included with the roof
rack carrier system.
® For the sake of the environment
A roof rack is often left mounted out of con­
venience even if it is no longer used. Your ve­ hicle w ill use more fue l due to the inc reased
wind res istance. So remove t he roof rack after
u sing it.

mats will prevent them from sliding into posi­
tions that could interfere with the pedals or im­ pa ir safe operation of your vehicle in other ways.
.&_ WARNING
Pedals that cannot move freely can result in a
loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of
serious personal injury .
- Always make sure that floor mats are prop­
erly secured.
- Never place or install floor mats or other floor coverings in the veh icle that cannot be
properly secured in place to prevent them
from slipp ing and interfering with the ped­
als or the ability to contro l the vehicle.
- Never place o r install floor mats or other
floor coverings on top of already installed
floo r mats. Add it ional floor mats and othe r
coverings w ill reduce the size of the peda l
area and interfere with the pedals.
- Always properly reinstall and secure floor
mats that have bee n taken o ut for cleaning.
- Always make sure that objects cannot fall
in to the dr iver footwell while the veh icle is
moving. Objects can be come trapped under
the brake peda l and accelerator pedal caus ­
ing a loss of vehicle control.
Stowing luggage

All luggage and other objects must be properly
stowed and secured in the luggage compart­
ment.

Loose items in the luggage compartment can
shift suddenly, changing vehicle handling charac­
teristics . Loose items can also increase the risk of
serious personal injury in a sudden veh icle ma­
neuver or in a collision .

partment.

the luggage compartment as far forward as possible

Imp roper ly stored luggage or other i tems can
f ly through the vehicle causing serious per­
sonal injury in the event of hard braking or an
accident. To help reduce the risk of serio us
personal injury:
- Always put objects, for example, luggage or
other heavy items in the luggage compart­
ment.
-Always secure objects in the luggage com­
partment using the tie-down hooks and
suitable straps .
.&_ WARNING

Heavy loads will influence the way your vehi­
cle handles . To help reduce the risk of a loss
of cont rol lead ing to serious personal injury:
-Always keep in m ind when transpo rting
heavy objects, that a change in the center of
gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling :
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
poss ible.
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the
luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Ax le Weight Rating
or the G ross Vehicle Weight Rating specif ied
on the safety compliance sticker on the left
door jamb. Exceeding permissible we ight
standards can cause the vehicle to slide and handle differently.

A WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed whi le driving.
- Never transport objects larger than those
fitting completely into the luggage area be­ cause the rear lid cannot be fully closed .
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid
open, observe the following notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close al l w indows,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument pan-
el,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed.
A WARNING
Always make sure that the doors, all windows
and the rear lid are securely closed and locked
t o reduce the ris k of injury when the vehicle is
not be ing used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make su re
that it is properly closed and locked.
- Never leave yo ur vehicle unattended espe­
cially with the rear lid left open. A chi ld
could crawl into the vehicle through the lug­
gage compartment and close the rear lid be­
coming trapped and unable to get out. Be­
ing trapped in a vehicle can lead to serious
persona l injury.
- Never let children play in or around the ve hi­
cle .
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage
compartment. Veh icle occupants must al­
ways be properly restrained in one of the ve­
hicle's seating positions.
@ Tips
- Air circulation helps to reduce window fog­
ging. Stale air escapes to the outside
through vents in the trim panel, on the left
side of the luggage compartment. Be sure
to keep these slots free and open.

- Th e tire pressure must correspond to the
load. The tire pressure is shown on the tire
pressure label. The tire pressure label is lo­
cated on the driver's side B-pillar. The tire
pressure label lists the recommended cold
tire inf lation pressures for the vehicle at its
maximum capac ity we ight and the tires that
were on your vehicle at the time it was man­
ufactured. For recomme nded t ire pressures
for normal load condi tions, please see chap­
ter
c> page 266.
Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with four
tie -downs to secure luggage and other items.

In a co llision , the laws of physics mean that even
smaller items that are loose in the vehicle will
become heavy missiles that can cause serious in­
jury . Items in the vehicle possess energy which
vary with vehicle speed and the weight of the i tem . Vehicle speed is the most significant factor.
For example, in a frontal collision at a speed of
30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a 10 lbs
(4 .5 kg) object are about
20 times the normal
weight of the item. This means that the weight
of the item would sudden ly be about
200 lbs (90 kg) . You can imag ine the injuries that
a
200 lbs (90 kg) item flying freely through the
passenger compartment could cause in a colli­
sion like th is .

Safe ty belts
The warning light . in the instrument cluster
lights up when the ignit ion is switched on as a re­
minder to fasten the safety belts. In addition, a
warning tone w ill sound for a certain period of
time.

- Safety belts are the s ingle most effective
means ava ilable to reduce the risk of ser ious
i njury and death in automobile acc idents .
For yo ur protect ion and that of your passen­
gers, always co rrectly wea r safety be lts
when the vehicle is moving .
- Failure to pay attention to t he war ning light
that comes on could lead to persona l injury.
Why safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for peo ­
ple riding in vehicles.

The physical princ iples are simple . Both the vehi ­
cle and the passengers possess energy which var­
i es with vehicle speed and body weight. Engi­
neers call this energy "kinetic energy."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the greater the vehicle 's we ight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash .
Vehicle speed is the most sign ifican t factor. If
the speed doub les from 15 to 30 mph (25 to 50
km/h), the energy increases 4 times!

The same principles apply to people s itting in a
vehicle that is invo lved in a frontal collision. Even
at city speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to 50 km/h),
the forces acting on the body can reach one ton (2,000 lbs , or 1,000 kg) or more. At h igher
speeds, these forces are even greater.
People who do not use safety belts are a lso not
attached to their vehicle. In a frontal coll is ion
they will also keep mov ing forward at the speed
their vehicle was travelling just before the crash .
Of course, the laws of physics don 't just apply to
frontal collisions, they determine what happens i n a ll kinds of accide nts and co llisions .

infant or a child in a rearward-facing seat .
The Advanced Airbag System in your veh icle has
been certified to comply with the Requirements
of United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standard 208 as applicab le at the time your vehi­
cle was manufactured.
The Standard req uires the front airbag on the
passenger side to be turned
off ("suppressed") if
a child up to about one year of age restrained in
one of the rear-facing or forward-facing infant re­
stra ints listed in Federa l Motor Vehicle Safety
Standard 208 with which the Advanced Airbag
System in your vehicle was certified has been in­
stalled on the front passenger seat. For a listing
of the ch ild restraints that were used to ce rtify
comp liance with the US Safety Standard
c>page 223.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light in the
h eadliner tells you when the front Advanced A ir­
bag on the passenger side has been turned
off by
the elect ronic control unit.
E ach t ime you tur n on the ignit ion, the
PA SSEN­
GER AIR BAG OFF ~; ON @ light will come on
for a few seconds and:
- PAS SENGER AIR BAG OFF~; will come on if
the front passenger seat is not occupied,
- PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; will come on if
the electr ical capacitance measured by the ca­
pacit ive passenger detection system for the
front passenge r seat equa ls the comb ined ca­
pacitan ce of an infant up to abou t one ye ar of
age and one of the rea rwa rd-facing or forward­
f acing child restraints listed in Federa l Moto r
Vehicle Safety Standard 208 with which the Ad ­
vanced Airbag System in your vehicle was certi­
fied. For a listing of the child restraints that
were used to cert ify your vehicle's compliance
with the U.S. Safety Standard
c> page 223.
-PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; will come on if
there is a small child or child restraint on the
front passenger seat,
- PASSENGER AIR BAG ON @will go off if the
front passenger seat is occupied by an adult as
reg istered by the capacitive passenger detec-

T he PAS SENGER AIR BAG OFF~; ligh t comes on
whe n electrica l capacitan ce regis tered on the
front passenge r seat is equal to or less than the
combined capacitance of a typical 1 year -old in­
fant and one of the rearward -facing or forward ­
facing child restraints listed in Federal Motor Ve­ hicle Safety Standard 208 w ith which the Ad­
vanced Airbag System in your vehicle was ce rti­
fied.
If the total e lectr ica l capacitance reg istered on
the front passenger seat is more than that of a
typ ical 1 year-old child but less than the weight
of a small adult, the front airbag on the passen­
ger side can deploy (the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF ~;
light does not come on).
If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light does
not come on, the fro nt airbag on the passenger
s ide has not been t urned
off by the electro nic
c ontro l unit and can deploy if the contro l uni t
senses an impac t that meets t he conditions stor­
ed in its memory.
For example , the airbag may deplo y if:
- a small ch ild that is heav ier than a typical 1
year-o ld child is on the front passenger seat
(regardless of whethe r the child is in one of the
child safety seats listed
c> page 223), o r
- a child who has outgrown c hild restraints is on
the front passenge r seat.
If the front passenger airbag is turned off, the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light comes on i n
the headliner and stays on.
If the front passenger airbag deploys, the Feder­
al Standard requires the airbag to meet the "low
risk" deployment criteria to reduce the risk of i n­
jury through interact ion w ith the airbag. "Low
risk" deployment occurs in t hose crashes that
ta ke place at lowe r decele rations as defined in
t h e e lectronic co ntrol un it
c> page 209, PASS EN­
GER A IR BAG OFF~; ON@ light.
Always remembe r, a ch ild seat or infant ca rr ier
insta lled on the front seat may be st ruck and
k nocked out of pos it io n by the rap idly inflat ing
passenge r's airbag in a fron tal coll is ion. The ..,_

passenger side and very small adults on the driv­
er side. The low risk deployment criteria are in­
tended to help reduce the risk of injury through interaction with the front airbag that can occur,
for example, by being too close to the steer ing
wheel and instrument panel when the a irbag in­
flates .
In addition, the system has been certified to
comply w ith the "suppression" requirements of
the Safety Standard, to turn off the front a irbag
for infants 12 months old and younger who are
restrained on the front passenger seat in child re­
stra ints that a re listed in the Standa rd
q page 223, Child restraints and Advanced front
airbag system .
"Suppression" requ ires the front a irbag on the
passenger side to be turned off if:
- a ch ild up to about one year of age is restra ined
on the front passenger seat i n one of the rear­
facing or forward-fac ing infant restra ints listed
in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208
with wh ic h t he Advanced Airbag System in your
vehicle was certified . For a listing of the ch ild
restraints that were used to certify your vehi ­
cle's comp liance with the US Safety Standard
q page 223,
-When a person is detected on the front passen ­
ger seat that has an electrical capacitance that
is more than the tota l electrical capac itance of
a ch ild that is about 1 year old restra ined in one
of the rear-facing or forward-facing infant re­
straints (listed in Federal Motor Veh icle Safety
Sta ndard 208 w ith wh ich the Advanced A irbag
System i n your ve hicle was certified), the front
airbag o n the passenge r side may o r may not
deploy.
The
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light comes on
when the e lectron ic cont rol u nit detects a total
e lectrical capacitan ce on the front passenger seat
that requ ires the fron t ai rbag to be turned off. If
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light does not
come on, the front ai rbag on the passenger side
has not been turned off by the control unit and
~ can dep loy if the control unit senses an impact
;:::: that meets the conditions stored in its memory.

Always remember: Even tho ugh yo ur vehicle is
equipped with Advanced Airbags, the safest place
for children is properly restrained on the back
seat. Please be sure to read the important infor­
mation in the sections that follow and be sure to
heed all of the WARNINGS .
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of injury when an airbag in­
f lates, always wea r safety be lts prope rly.
- If you are u nrestra ined, leaning forward, si t­
ting sideways or ou t of position in any way,
your r is k of injury is much highe r.
- You will a lso receive ser ious injuries and
could even be killed if yo u are up agains t the
a ir bag or too close to i t whe n it in flates -

The PASS ENGER AI R BAG OFF ~ ; light should
NO T come on when the ignition is on and an
adult is sitting in a proper seating position on the
front passenger seat . If the
P ASS ENGER AIR
BAG OFF ~;
light comes on and stays on while
driving, under these circumstances, make sure
that :
- the adult on the front passenger seat is proper­
ly seated on the center of the seat cushion with
his or he r back up aga inst the backrest and the
back rest is not reclined,
- the adult is not tak ing weight off the seat by
ho lding on to the passenger assist handle
above t he front passenger door or supporting
their weight on the a.rm rest,
- the safety belt is be ing properly worn and that
there is not a lot of slack in the safety belt web­
bing,
- there are no aftermarket seat covers or cush ­
ions or other things (such as blankets) on the
front passenger seat that migh t ca use the ca­
pacitive passenger detection system to miscal­
cu late electrical capacitance .
Important safety instructions on
monitoring the Advanced Airbag System
A WARNING
-If the status of the Adv a need A irbag System
has changed while the vehicle is moving, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF,;; ON @ light
blinks for about 5 seconds to catch the driv­
er's attention .
If this happens, always stop
as soon as it is safe to do so and check the
steps described above .
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF,;; light
does not go off when an adult who is not
very small is s itting on the front passenger

seat after taking the steps described above,
make sure the adu lt is properly seated and
restrained at one of the rear seating posi­
tions . Have the a irbag system inspected by
your author ized Audi dealer before trans­
port ing anyone on the front passenger seat.

comes when the veh icle is being used, have
the system inspected immedia tely by your
authorized Audi dealer . It is possib le that
the airbag will inflate when it is not sup­
posed to, or will not inflate when it should.
A WARNING
If the front airbag inflates, a ch ild without a
chi ld restraint, or in a rearward-facing child
safety seat, or in a forward-fac ing child re­
stra int that has not been properly insta lled
will be seriously injured and can be killed.
- Even though your vehicle is equipped with
an Advanced A irbag System, make certain
that all children , espec ially 12 years and
younge r, always ride on the back seat p rop­
erly rest rained for the ir age and s ize .
- Always install fo rwa rd or rear-facing child
seats on the rea r seat- even w ith an Ad­
vanced Ai rbag System .
- I f you must install a rea rwa rd-facing child
seat on the front passenge r seat because of
except ional circumstances a nd the
PASSEN­
GER AIR BAG OFF,;,
light does not appea r
and stay on, immediate ly install the rear ­
facing chi ld seat in a rear seating position
and have the airbag system inspected by
your Aud i dea ler.
- If, in exceptional circumstances, you must
install a forward-facing child restraint on
the front passenger seat, always move the seat into its rearmost position in the seat's
fore and aft ad justment range, as far away
from the a irbag as poss ible . The back rest
m ust be adjusted to an upr ight position .

by being pushed into you as the airbag in­
flates.
- Never p lace or attach accessories or other
objects (such as cup holders, telephone brackets, or even large, bulky objects) on
the doors, over or near the area marked
"AIRBAG" on the seat backrests.
- Such objects and accessories can become
dangerous projectiles and cause in ju ry
when the supplemental side airbag de­ ploys.
- Never carry any objects or pets in the de­ ployment space between them and the
airbags or allow children or other passen­
gers to travel in this position.
- Always use the built-in coat hooks only for
lightweight clothing. Never leave any heavy
or sharp-edged objects in the pockets that
may interfere w it h side airbag deployment
and can cause personal i njury in an accident.
- Always prevent the side airbags from being
damaged by heavy objects knocking against
or hitting the sides of the seatbacks.
- The airbag system can only be triggered
once. If the airbag has been triggered, the
system must be replaced by an author ized
Audi dealership.
- Damage (cracks, deep scratches etc.) to the
orig inal seat covers or to the seam in the
area of the side a irbag mod ule m ust always
be repa ired immed iate ly by an authorized
Audi dealer .
- If children are sea ted improperly, their r is k
of injury increases in the ca se of an ac ciden t

-Never attempt to modify any components of
the a irbag sys tem in any way.
- In a side collision, s ide a irbags w il l not fu nc­
t ion properly if sensors cannot correct ly
measure increasi ng a ir pressure ins ide the
doo rs when air escapes through larger, un­
closed openings in the door panel.
- Never drive w ith inter io r door tr im panels
removed .
- Never drive when parts have been re­
moved from the inside doo r panel and the
open ings they leave have not been proper­
ly closed.

- Never drive when loudspeakers in the
doors have been removed unless the
speaker holes have been properly closed.
- Always make certain that openings are
covered or filled if additional speakers or
other equipment is installed i n the inside
door panels.
- Always have work on the doors done by an
authorized Aud i dealer or q ualified work­
shop.
Side curtain airbags
Description of side curtain airbags
The side curtain airbag system can provide sup­
plemental protection to properly restrained oc­
cupants.

The side curtain airbags are located on both sides
of the inter ior above the fro nt and rear side win­
dows~
fig. 168. T hey are identified by the word
"AIRBAG" on the windshie ld frame and the cen­
ter roof p illar .
The side curtain airbags contain features that provide ejection mitigation to help prevent veh i­
cle occupants or parts of their bodies from being
completely or part ially ejected from the vehicle
interior in certain side impacts and vehicle roll­
overs .
The side c urtain airbag system supplements the
safety belts and can help to reduce the risk of in­
jury for occupants' heads and upper torso. The
side curtain airbag inflates in side impacts and
only when the ve hicle acceleration registered by
the control unit is high enough .
