The automatic dimming function is activated every time the ignition
is turned on. The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto dimming
is active .
When dimming is activated, the inside mirror will darken
automati ­
cally
in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as
headlights from rearward approaching vehicles). Even in dimming
mode, the mirror surface turns bright when :
• the interior light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .

With the help of the sensors in the mirror, when the light switch is
in the
AUTO posi tion, the low beams are switched on and off auto ­
matically depending on the ambient light conditions=>
page 70.

light sensors, as this would interfere with both the automatic oper­
ation of the headlights and the automatic dimming of the inside

t he steering is locked.
To
lo ck the steering after you have removed the ignition key, turn
the steering whee l in either direction until you hear it lock into
place . You should always lock the steering whenever you leave your
vehic le. This makes a vehicle theft even more difficult =>& .
Ignition on 0
If it is difficult to turn the key after you have inserted it into the igni ­
tion lock, turn the steering wheel back and forth. This will take the
load off the steering lock mechanism and you wil l be able to turn the
key freely and start the engine.
Starting the engine ®
In this position the engine starts . Whi le the engine is starting, the
power supply to the headlights and other electrical consumers is
temporari ly interrupted to conserve battery power . After the engine
has started, release the key and it will return to position
G) .
Before the starter can be operated again the key must be turned
back to posi tion
G) . The non -repeat lock prevents you from
damaging the starter when the engine is running.
& WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ignition lo ck while the veh icle is
moving. The steering wheel will lo ck causing lo ss of control .
• If you have to leave your vehicle -even for just a minute -always
remove the ign ition key and take it with you . This i s especially
i mportant if you are going to l eave children behind in the vehi cle .
The children could start the eng ine or u se other vehi cle control s.

Ignition key safety lock
The ig nition ke y can only be rem oved when the selec tor
le ver i s in the "P" (Par k) p osition.
After switching off the ignition, the ignition key can only be
r emoved from the igni tio n lock w hen the se lector leve r is in the "P"
(Park) position . After you have removed the key, the selector lever is
l ocked and cannot be moved. •

The clutch pedal must be depressed all the way before
you can start the engine .
The manual transmission in your Audi is equipped with a n
interlock-feature.
-Depress the clutch pedal all the way.

Always depress the clutch pedal fully when changing gears. Do not
hold the vehicle on a hi ll with the c lutch pedal partially depressed .
This may cause premature clutch wear or damage .

cause premature wear in the transmission .

Move the shift lever all the way to t he left, press it dow n,

Especially after driving forward, stop the vehic le completely, shift

Power is transferred between the engine and the transmission by

- Make sure that all lights and signals are operating
correctly.
- Make sure that the tire pressure is correct.

- Adjust front seat, head restraint and mirrors correctly for
your height.

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condition of the
vehicle, the driver as well as the driver's ability to concen­
trate on the road without being distracted.
The driver is responsible for the safety of the vehicle and all
of its occupants. If your ability to drive is impaired, safety risks for everybody in the vehicle increase and you also

fore:
- Do not let yourself be distracted by passengers or by
using a cellular telephone.
- NEVER drive when your driving ability is impaired (by
medications, alcohol, drugs, etc .).
- Observe all traffic laws, rules of the road and speed limits
and plain common sense.
- ALWAYS adjust your speed to road, traffic and weather
conditions.
- Take frequent breaks on long trips. Do not drive for more
than two hours at a stretch.
- Do NOT drive when you are tired, under pressure or when
you are stressed.

- Make sure that your passengers also b uckle up and prop­
erly wea r th eir sa fety belts.
Protect children wit h a child restraint system appropriate
for the size and age.
The warning light i in the instrument cluster lights up when the
ignition is switched on as a reminder to fasten the safety belts. In
addition , you will hear a warning tone.
After the ignition is switched on, the warning light in the instrument cluster will a lways come on for about 6 seconds and if the driver has
not fastened the safety belt, a warning tone will also sound for
about 6 seconds . As soon as the driver has fastened the safety belt,
the warning tone will stop and the warning light will go out .
If the driver or front seat passenger have not buckled -up within
about 10 seconds after the warning tone has stopped and the
vehicle is moving faster than about 15 mph, the warning tone will
sound again for about 6 seconds and then stop for 24 seconds and
then repeat this reminder sequence for a maximum of 2 minutes. At
speeds be low 5 mph, the warning tone will not sound.

The physical principles are simple. Both the vehicle and the passen­
gers possess energy which varies with vehicle speed and body
we ight . Engineers cal l this energy "kinetic energy ."
T he higher the speed of the vehicle and the greater the vehic le's
we ight, the more energy that has to be "absorbed" in the crash .
Vehicle speed is the most significan t factor. If the speed doubles
from 15 to 30 mph (25 to 50 km/h), the energy increases 4 times! .,

one half. Never drive faster than the posted speed limit and weather
conditi ons permit. •
Reducing unnecessary Idling
Even when your car is just idling it burns up fuel.
- Shut the eng ine off when you are not driving the vehicle .
- Do not warm up the vehicle by letting the eng ine run at
idle.
I t makes sense to shut off the engine in traffic jams, when waiting
for trains to pass at railroad crossings, or at traffic lights that have long waits on red. Turning the engine off for just 30 -40 seconds
saves more fue l than is burned s tarting the engine again .
It takes a long time for the engine to warm up fully when it is
running at idle . However, wear and noxious emissions a re especial ly
high when the engine is warming up . So you should drive away as
soon as you start the engine and avoid running at high RPMs whi le
the engine is stil l warming up .

Do not leave engine idling unattended after starting . If warning
lights should come on to indicate improper operation, they would
go unheeded. Extended idl ing also produces heat, wh ich cou ld
result in overheating or other damage to the vehicle or other
property .•

By having your vehicle regularly serviced by an Audi dea ler helps to
ensure that i t runs properly and economically . The conditio n of your
vehic le not only affects its safety and abi lity to hold its va lue, it also
affects
fuel consumption .
Check your oil each time you fill your tank.
The amount of oil used is related to engine load and speed .
I t is normal for the oi l consumption of a new eng ine to reach its
lowest va lue after a certain mi leage has been driven.
You must drive your vehicle about 3,000 miles (5,000 kilometres) be fore you can proper ly assess o il consumpt ion.
This also applies to fuel consumption and engine output .

vehicle wi ll impair the function of the emission control system and

• Never try to remove dirt, mud or dust if the surface of the vehicle
is dry . Never use a dry cloth or sponge, s ince this cou ld scratch your
vehic le's paint or w indows .

• When you wash your car in the winter : if you rinse your vehicle
with a hose, be careful not to aim the stream of water directly at
locks, or at door or ha tch openings - they can freeze shut.
• Never use sponges designed to remove insects, or any kitchen
scouring sponges or simila r products. They can damage your paint
finish .
• Never use a dry cloth or sponge to c lean the head lights. Only use
wet cloths or sponges to prevent scratches . It is best to use soapy
water.

Washing your vehicle with a power washer
Cleaning the exterior of your car with a high-pressure
power washer is safe as long as you observe a few simple rules .

Always follow the operating instructions for the power
washer.
Make sure that the jet o n th e sp ray hose produces a "fan
shaped sp ray".
Do
not hold the spray n ozzle too close to soft ma terials .
Never u se a power washer to clean the power top itself .
When cleaning the vehicle with a power washer
always follow the
operating instructions. This applies particula rly to the
operating
pre ssure
and the spraying di stanc e. Maintain a sufficient distance
to soft materia ls such as rubber hoses and sound/vibration dead­
ening materia ls (particularly on the underside of the engine hood).
Do not use a jet which sprays water in a
di re ct stre am or one that
has a
rotating jet.
Water temperature shou ld not exceed 140 °F (60 °Cl.

Never wash tires with a jet that sp rays water in a dire ct stream .

• Never use a power washer to clean the powe r top itself .
• To avoid damaging your vehicle, always make sure that there is
sufficien t distance between the spray head and soft materials like
rubber hoses, plastic parts and sound -deadening materials. Never
aim the spray head at the same point for a long time. This also
applies to cleaning headlights and painted bumpers. Remember:
the closer the nozzle is to the surface of the material, the greater the stress on the material. •
Folding top care
The folding top requires special care.
Keeping your top looking great and making certain that it lasts a
long time depend to a great extent on proper use and care. Remove
bird droppings as soon as possible, since the corrosive chemicals in
them will cause the rubber impregnation in your top to swell and
possibly allow the fabric to leak .
W ith normal soiling, all you need to do is clear the top with a soft
brush and clear water . Always brush in the direction of the fabric
from front to rear.
If the top is very dirty and has spotted areas clean it with a brush
using a convertible top cleaner. Always brush in the direction of the
fabric from front to rear . Rinse with plenty of clear water, and allow
the top to air-dry.
Chamois are not suitable for drying the top.
Never use gasoline, spot remover, benzene, paint thinner or
solvents to remove spots. We recommend that you only use
cleaners especially formulated for use on convertible tops, and that
you follow the produce use directions carefully . Authori zed Audi
deals can provide detailed information.

Wind deflector
Clear the wind deflector with water or, if it is heavily soiled, a chem­
ically neutral cleaning solution.

Waxing
Wax protects the vehicle's paint.
-Use a manually applied car wax occasionally to protect
the paint.
A good wax coating protects the vehicle paint to a large extent
against the environmental factors listed under ~ page 200,
"Washing" and even against slight scratches.
You can use a liquid car wax to protect your paint as soon as one
week after your vehicle has been delivered.
Even if you regularly use a waxing process in automatic car washes ,
we recommend that you manually apply a coat of wax to give the .,_

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle de pen ds on an ade quate
amount of oil to lubric ate and co ol all of its moving parts.
In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of interna l
engine components, al l internal co mbustion engines consume a
certain amount of oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine
and may change sign ificant ly over the life of the engine . Typ ical ly,
engines with a specified break -in period (see=>
page 192) consume
more oil duri ng the brea k-in period than they consume afte r oil
consumption has stabi liz ed.
Unde r no rmal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on
the quality and viscosity of t he oil, the RPM ( revo lutions per m inute)
at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature and road
co nd itions. Further factors are the amount of oi l dilut io n from water
condensation or fue l residue and the oxidation leve l of the oil. As
any e ng ine is subject to wear as mil eage builds up, the o il consump ­
tion may increase over time until replacement of worn components
may become necessary .
With all these var iables com ing into p lay, no standard rate of oil
consu mption can be es tab lished or speci fied. There is no a lternative
t o regular and frequent checking of the oi l leve l, see Note.
If the yellow engine oi l level warning symbol in the instrumen t
cluster _ lights up, y ou should check the oil level as soon as
possible
with the oil dipstick=> page 224. Top off the oil at your

• The oil pressure warning display 't!:r. is not an indicator of the oil
level. Do not rely on it. Instead , check the oil level in your engine at
regular intervals , preferab ly ea ch time you refuel , and alw ays before
going on a long trip.
• I f you have the impression your engine consumes excessive
a m oun ts o f oi l, we recommend tha t you consu lt your Audi dealer to
have the cause of your concern properly diagnosed . Keep in mind
that the acc urate measure ment o f oil co nsum ptio n requires grea t
care and may take some time . Your Audi dea ler has instructions
about how to measu re oil consump tion accurately. •

mend that you have the brake f luid changed by your authorized Audi

Battery
General information
Your vehicle is equipped with a specia l battery, an AGM battery. This
battery is located in the luggage compartment and must be
replaced with an origina l equipment battery. Under normal oper ­
ating conditions, the battery is
maintenan ce-free .
Have the battery checked when you take your vehicle in for service.
You a re we ll advised to replace a battery that is olde r th an 5 years .
Disc onn ectin g th e batt ery t erm inal s
Some vehic le functions (power window regulators, for e xample) are
lost if the battery terminals are disconnected. These functions have
to be relearned after the batte ry term inals are connected again. To
prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehicle electrical system when abso lutely necessary for repairs.
V ehi cle s not dri ven for long period s
If you are going to le t your vehicle stand for a long t ime a nd not
drive it, you should remember there are electrica l components
which are still functioning and they will draw energy from the
battery and drain it, for examp le, the engine immob ilizer. To prevent
this, you can either charge the battery occasionally to keep it in
good working condition or you can d isconnect the negative cab le
on the battery.
W inter op era ti on
During the winter months, battery capacity tends to decrease as
temperatures drop. This is because more power is a lso consumed
while starting, and the headlights, rear window defogger, etc., are
used more often .
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, particularly in city traffic or
when trave ling on ly shor t distances . Let your au thorized Audi dea ler
check the capacity of the vehicle battery before winter sets in
=>
page 235 . A well charged battery will not on ly prevent start ing
p rob lems when the weather is cold , but wi ll a lso last longer .
Replacing battery
The new battery must h ave the same capacity, voltage (12 volts},
amperage, construction and p lug sea ling, as the origina l battery.
Specifications are l isted on the battery hous ing. Batteries specially
developed by Audi fulfill the ma intenance, output, and safety
requirements.
When installing the battery, make sure the ignition and all electrical consumers are switched off=>
