When a door is open, the interior l igh ts are
turned off afte r abo ut 10 m inu tes to p reven t
battery draining.
The brightness of the lights is controlled au­
t om atically by a dimmer when they are
sw itched on and off.
Instrument panel illumination
The illumination of the instruments, displays
and the cen ter console can be adjusted .

With the l igh ts sw itched on, the brightness of
i nstr ument cluster (i.e. needles, gauges and
d isp lays) and center console i llumination can
be ad justed .

The instrument cluster and cente r console
illumination (ga uges and needles) comes
on when you switch on the ignition and the
vehicle headlights are off. Be aware of t he
following difference between mode ls built
to US or Ca nadian specifications:
- USA models: illumination of the instru­
ment cluster (gauge s and needles),
dash and cente r console around the

gearshift lever is controlled by a light
sensor located in the in strument panel.
The in strument panel illumination will
automatically become dimmer as the
daylight fades away and eventuall y will
go out completely when outside light is
very low . This i s to remind you, the driv­
er, to switch on the headlights before it
get s too dark.
- Canada models: in strument pan el illu­
min ation w ill stay bright r egardless of
the intensit y of ambient light . Alwa ys
be aware of changes in out side light
conditions while you are dri ving. Re·
s pond in time to fading daylight by
turning the light switch to position

luggage compartment light
The light is located on the right side of the
luggage compartment.
These lights come on automatically when t he
rear lid is opened . The lights turn off automat­
ical ly if the lid is left open for more then 10
minutes .

The vanity mirrors in the sun visors are equip­
ped with lids. Push lid in direct ion of arrow to

Automatic dimming function
The a utomatic dimming function is activated
every time the ignition is turned on. The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto dimming
is active .
When dimming is activated, the inside mirror
will darken
automa tically in response to the
amount of light str ik ing the m irror (such as
headlights from rearwa rd approaching veh i­
cles) . Even in dimming mode, the mirror su r­
face turns bright when: -
the interior lig ht is switched on
- reve rse ge ar is engaged.

Broken g lass o f aut oma tic dimm ing mir ror
ca n cause electrolyte f luid lea kage . Elec­
trolyte f luid can irritate skin, eyes , and res­
pirato ry system.
- Repeated or prolonged ex posu re to e lec ­
trolyte can cause irritation to the respira ­
tory system , especially among people
wit h asthma or other resp iratory condi­
tions . Get fresh air immediately by leav ­
i n g the veh icle o r, if that is no t possib le,
op en w indows and doo rs all the way.

them thorough ly with large amounts of
clean water fo r at least 15 minu tes;
m edical attenti on is recom mend ed.
- I f electrolyte contac ts skin, fl ush affect­

instr ucted to do so by medica l professio­
na l. Get medical attention immediately.

Liq uid electrolyte leaked from a broke n
mir ro r glass w ill damage any plastic s urfa ­
ces it comes in contact with. Clean up sp il­
l ed e lectrolyte immed iate ly w ith clear wa­
ter and a sponge .

-If you switch off the automatic dim­
ming funct ion on the inside mirror ,

automatic dimming of the o uts ide m ir­
r or s will likewise be di sabled .
-Check to make sure there are no objects
preventing light from reaching the inside
mirror.
- Do not attach any sticke rs to the wind ­
shield in front of the two light sensors,
as this would interfere with both the au­
tomatic operation of the headlights and
the automatic dimming of the inside mir ror(s).
Outside mirrors
The outside mirrors ore electrically adjusted.

just the outside mirror on the passenger
side.
• Press the knob in the appropriate direction
to move the mirror surface so that you have
a good view to the rear.
Heated mirro rs
• Turn the knob to posit ion @.
Depending on the outside temperature, the
mirror surfaces are heated until the ignition is
switched off -even if the knob is no longer in
position @. You are well-advised to fold the
outs ide mirrors in when maneuvering in tight
spaces or when leaving the car parked close to
other veh icles.

- Curved ( i.e. convex) mirror s urfaces in­
crease yo ur field of view. Remember that
vehicles or other objects will appear
smaller and farther away than when
seen in a flat m irror . If you use this mir­
ror to estimate distances of following ve­
hicles when chang ing lanes, you could
es timate incorrectly and cause an ac ci­
dent.
- If the mirror housing is moved uninten­
tionally (for examp le, w hile pa rking your
vehicle), then yo u must first fold the m ir­
ror elect rically . Do not rea djust the mir ­
ror housing man ually . You cou ld damage
the motor which controls the mirror .
(D Tips
If there sho uld be a ma lf u nction in the
e lectrica l system, yo u can sti ll adjust the
outside m irrors by pressing the edge of
the m irror.
Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
Applies to vehicles: wit h automatic dimm ing for outside
mirro rs
The outs ide mirrors are dimmed together with
the automatic dimming of the inside mirror .
When the ignition is sw itched on, the mirrors
darken automatically depending on the light
striking them (e .g. headlights from the rear) .
When the interior lighting is switched on and
when reverse gear is engaged, the mirrors are
switched back to the ir original br ightness (not
dimmed) .
A WARNING
Broken glass of automat ic dimming mirror
can cause electrolyte flu id leakage. El ec­

p ira to ry system.

the rear window is retracted, o r the light

Wiper and washer
system
Windshield wiper
The windshield wiper lever controls both the
windshield wipers and the washer system.

Automatic wiper /wa sher
.,. Pull the lever to position ® (toward the
steering whee l) and hold .
.,. Release the lever. The washer stops and the
w ipers keep go ing for about four seconds.
Turning off the wipers
.,. Move the lever back to position @ .
The w indshield wipers and washer only wo rk
whe n the ign ition is turned on.

er sti ll in the interva l wipe position and then

tem, a lways loosen blades which are fro­
z en to the windsh ie ld before operat ing
wipers.
- To he lp prevent damage to w iper blades,
do not use gasoline , kerosene, pa int
thinner, or other solvents on or near t he
wiper blades .
- To he lp prevent damage to the wiper
arms or other comp onents, do not at­
tempt to move the wipers by hand .

-Commercial hot waxes applied by auto­
matic car washes affect the cleanability
of the glass surface .
- The front wipe r blades are different
l engths; the blade on the driver's s ide is
l onger .
Digital compass
Activating or deactivating the compass
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
The direction is displayed on the interior rear
view mirror.

To avoid inacc urate dir ections, do not a l­

tems , or metal parts close to the mirror.
Setting the magnetic deflection zone
Appl ies to vehicles: with digita l compass
The correct magnetic deflection zone must be
set in order to display the directions correctly.

Calibrating the compass

~ Drive in a circle at a speed of about 5 mph
(10 km/h) until a direction is shown on the
interior rear view mirror.
A WARNING
The d igital compass is to be used as a di­
rectional a id only. Even though you may
want to look at it wh ile you are driv ing, you
must sti ll pay attention to t raffic, road and
weather condit ions as we ll as other possi­
ble hazards.

safety of your passengers and others . We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, a irbags, ch ild restra ints as
well as child safety. Your safety is for us

safety as well as for that of your passengers.
The information in this se ction app lies to all
model ve rsions of your veh icle . Some of the
feat ures desc ribed in this sec tions may be
standa rd equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others . If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Aud i dealer.

- Make certain that you follow the instruc­
t ions and heed the WARNINGS in this
Manual. It is in your interest and in the
interest of your passengers .

Safety equipment
The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
reduce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.
Your safety and the safety of your passenge rs
should not be left to chance. Advances in
technology have made a varie ty o f fea tures
avai la bl e to he lp re duce the risk of injury in an accident
. The following is a lis ting o f just a
few of the safety features in your Audi:

Plastic and vinyl
Plastics needs special care.
Use a clean, damp clo th or sponge to remove
d ust and light surface dirt . For other soil , use
a lukewarm a ll-purpose clean ing solution or a
mild saddle soap for viny l trim. Remove water
spo ts and soap traces with a clean, damp
clot h or sponge. Use a clean, soft clot h to rub
d ry .
Grease, tar or oil stains can be removed with a
clean cloth or sponge soaked w ith all-purpose
cleaner or with a solvent designed especially
to clean vinyl.
Occasionally apply a colorless vi nyl or leather
preservat ive to reta in the material's l uster
and p liability.

Aluminum trim
Use only neutral-pH products to remove spots
and depos its from alum in um s urfa ces.
C hrome care produ cts and alkaline cleaners
will attac k alumin um s urfaces and can dam ­
age them over time.

Touch-up paint
Minor paint damages should be touched up
immediat ely.
,,. Use e ithe r a to uc h-up p aint s tick or spray
paint to cove r minor scratches and nic ks. Your A
udi dealer has touch -up paint for minor
scratches and sto ne chips. Scratches should
be touched up soon after they occur to pre­
vent corrosion.

Windows
Clear vision to all sides.
Clean all w indows regular ly to remove road
film and carwash wax buildup .
,,. Remove snow from w indows using a b rush.
,,. Use a pla stic ice s craper to remove ice from
w indows and mi rrors.
,,. Remove othe r residue on the windows w ith
a spray-on g lass cleaner.
,,. Wipe the w indows dry with a clean piece of
cloth or kitc hen paper towel.
The best way to remove snow from windows and mirrors is to use a brush . Use a non-abra­
s ive
plastic ice scraper -better still, a spray
deicer -to remove
ice from w indows and mir­
rors.
T he w indows must not be cleaned with insect
remover or wax since these can inter fere w ith
the function of the windshie ld w iper blades
(chatte r) .
Oil, grease or s ilicone resid ue can be removed
with
glass cleaner or silicone remo ver . How­
ever, wax res idue requires the use of a spec ial­
ly formulated solve nt. Please contact your Au­
di dealer for adv ice on safe products for wax
r emova l.
Windows sh ould also be cleaned on the inside
at regu lar intervals . .,.

Never dry windows with the same chamois
that you use to dry painted surfaces . Wax resi­
due on the chamois can impair vision through
the windows.
_& WARNING
- The windshield must not be treated with
water-repellent materials. They can in­
crease glare under poor visibility condi­
tions such as wetness, darkness, or when
the sun is low on the horizon. In addi­
tion, they can cause the windshield wip­
ers to chatter.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS and
other information <=;>
page 162.
([) Note
-Never use warm or hot water to remove
snow and ice from windows and mirrors.
This could cause the glass to crack.
- To prevent damage to the wires of the
rear defogger, do not place any adhesive
stickers on the inside of the rear window
over the wires.
- To help prevent dirt from scratching the
window, always scrape in a forward di­
rection -pushing the scraper away from
you -never back and forth.
Weatherstrips
Complete car care includes the weatherstrips
as well.
.,. Apply a suitable rubber conditioner to the
weatherstrips from time to time.
To be able seal properly, the weatherstrips
around the hood, doors, rear lid, etc. must re­ main pliable . Spray the weatherstrips with sil­
icone or coat them with talcum powder or
glycerine to retain the flexibility of the rubber
and to protect them against freezing in the
winter .

Steel wheels

The wheels also have to be cleaned.
.,. Always include the hub caps and wheel rims
when washing your vehicle to remove road
dirt, salt sprays and brake dust.
If necessary, use a commercial wheel cleaner
to remove accumulated brake dust.
The wheel rims are easier to keep clean if they
are regularly coated with liquid wax.
Paint scratches should be touched up as soon
as possible to prevent corrosion
