cy release is provided .

Never operate the emergency release for
the trunk lid while the vehicle is moving .
Anti-theft alarm
system
The anti-theft alarm triggers an alarm if any­
one attempts to break into the vehicle .

The anti-theft alarm system triggers an audi­
ble a larm and turns on the emergency flasher
if an unauthorized interference with the vehi­
cle is sensed by the system.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched on?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched on
when you lock the driver's door manua lly us­
ing the fold-out key, or when you use the re­
mote control. The system is activated approx i­
mately 30 seconds after the vehicle is locked .
The indicator light
¢fig. 39 starts flashing
rapidly for 30 seconds and then blinks slowly.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched off?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched off
only when you use the remote control to un­
lock your vehicle.
If you do not open a door
within 30 seconds after you have unlocked
with the remote control, the veh icle wi ll lock
itse lf again a utomatically.
If you lock just the driver's door using your
key, the front passenger's door and the rear
lid remain locked.
When will the anti theft alarm system be
triggered?
When the vehicle is locked, the alarm system
monitors and protects the following parts of
the vehicle:

The conve rtible top is completely open when
the ind icator light in the instrument clus­
ter goes o ut. The doo r windows are automati­
cally lowered about 20 mm while the top is
opening.

.. Turn on the ignition .
.. Remove any objects from the storage com­
partment to prevent damage to the conver­
t ible top and the rear window.
.,. Pull and hold onto the switch throughout
the opening procedure .
Automatically Closing the Convertible Top
.. Turn on the ignition .
.. Remove any objects from the storage com­
partment to prevent damage to the conver­
t ible top and the rear window .
.. Press and hold the switch down thro ughout
the closing procedure.
The convertible top is completely open or closed when the indicator light in the in-
strument cluster goes out. The door windows
are automatically lowered about 20 mm w hile
the top is opening .

- Opening and closing the automatic con­
vertible top is possible below posted
speed lim its in c ity driving . At speeds
above 4 mph (6 km/h), you can use the
"convenience opening" funct ion . The
convertible top is completely opened by
br iefly pulling on the switch .
- The indicator light for the convertible
top goes out as soon as it is cor rectly
latched .
- In orde r not to discharge the battery un­
necessar ily, the top should not be low­
ered or raised several times in succession
w ith the engine not running.
-If the ind icator light for the convertible
top flashes when the switch is actuated,
th ere is a malfunct ion.
Convenience opening and closing of
power top
Applies to vehicles: with power convertible top
The power top con alternatively be opened
and closed by turning the key in the driver's
door lock.

Please note that convenience ope ning re­

General recommen­
dations
Why is your seat adjustment so
important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjust ing the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
-your body is prope rly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and airbag system can offe r
maximum protection

In the following sec tions, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust you r seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for insta lling a child safety seat on the front
passenger's seat. Always heed the informa­
tion rega rd ing child safety provided in
¢ page 136, Child Safety .
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal injury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion! This applies espec ially to the passen­
gers .
If your seating position is incorrect
you increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an acc ident.
If the
airbag infla tes and the seating position
is incorrect this could result in personal
injury or even death.
- It is import ant for bo th the driver and
front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the a irbag system can­
not protect you properly . In addition to
this, the front seats and head restra ints
must be adjusted to your body height so
that they can give you max imum protec­
tion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the s teer­
ing wheel or instrument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's o r fron t pa s­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpected ly, caus ­
ing sudden loss of vehicle contro l and
personal injury . If you ad just yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, you are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the driver's
seat in the fo llowing manner:
.,. Adjust the seat in fo re and aft direction so
t ha t you can easily p ush the peda ls to the
floor wh ile keeping your knee slightly bent

.,. Adjust the seatback so that when you sit
w ith your back against the seatback, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.,. Posit io n the head restraint according to the
occupant 's height

mum protection, t he top of the head re­
s t raint shou ld be a t least at eye level, pref ­
erab ly higher and idea lly level with the top
of the head

A WARNING "--
Never place any objects in the dr iver's foot-
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal function. In
case of sudden braking or an acc ident, you
wo uld not be able to brake or accelerate!

Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is de­
p loying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following manner:
.,. Move the front passenger seat into the rear ­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment

.,. Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright
position.
Do not ride with the seat reclined .

Moving the front seats forward or
backward

the seat to the desired position.

further until you feel and hear it engage.
Adjusting the seat height

seat.
... Push the lever down and pump it to lower
the seat.
Adjusting the seatback angle
.,. Lean forward to take your weight off the
seatback.

want the seatback to tilt.
A WARNING

- Never adjust the driver's or front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
If you do th is while the vehicle is moving,
you will be out of position. Always adjust
the driver's or front passenger's seat
when the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
height. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or serious injury could result!
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never rid e in a moving ve­
hicle with the seatback reclined . Safety

Head restraints
Adjusting head restraints, front seats
The head restraints must be adjusted proper­
ly to provide protection .

The head restraints on the front seats can be
adjusted to prov ide safe support to head and
neck at the optimum he ight. When optimally
adjusted, the top of the restra int should be
leve l with the top of the head

Using the pass-through and the removable
ski bag, you can transport long objects (e.g.
skis) neatly and without damaging the interi­

A WARNING
Spilled hot liquid can cause an accident
and personal injury.
- Never carry any beverage containers with
hot liquids, such as hot coffee or hot tea,
in the vehicle while it is moving. In case
of an acc ident, sudden braking or other
veh icle movement , hot liquid could spill,
causing scalding burns. Spilled hot liquid
can also cause an accident and personal
injury .
- Use only soft cups in the cupholder. Hard
cups and glasses can cause injury in an
accident.
- Never use the cupholder or adapter as an
ashtray -risk of fire .
(D Note
Only drink containers with lids should be
carried in the cupholder. Liquid could spill
out and damage you r vehicles electronic
equipment or stain the upholstery, etc.

A WARNING
The outlet plus any appliances plugged in­
to it remain functional even if the ignition
is switched off or the ignition key is re­
moved. Never leave children inside the ve­
hicle without supervision.

plugs that fit properly.

When the engine is off and accessories are still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­
tery can still be dra ined.
Storage
General
A WARNING
- Always remove objects from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
cou ld slide around inside the vehicle
wh ile driving or when accelerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­ ing around a corner.

- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage locations cannot fall out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake or accelerate.
