You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remote control. To fold the key out and back
in place, press the re lease button

@ Valet ke y
The valet key on ly fits the lock in the driver's
door and the ignition lock. If you have to leave
the key with somebody e lse, you are well-ad­
vised to turn over the valet key only.
Be aware that the rear lid and glove compart­
ment can be opened from inside the vehicle
using the release buttons .

The eme rgency key is only for temporary use if
the vehicle key should be lost or misplaced

You can check to find out how many keys have

vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­

jury.

- If you open the driver's door with the key
left in the ignit ion lock, a chime will
sound . Th is is your rem inder to remove
the key and lock the door.
- For security reasons, rep lacement keys
are only ava ilable from Audi dealers .

Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors simultaneously.
The power lock ing system in your ve hicle in­
corporates the fo llow ing funct ions:
- Central locking function
- Remote con tro l feature q page 33 .
- Anti -Theft Alarm Sys tem q page 38.
A ll the doors and the rear lid are locked by the
centra l locking system when you lock the vehi­
cle.
The unlocking a nd lock ing mode * can be
changed in t he d river i nfo rmation system
qpage24.
Unlocking the vehicle
You can un lock the vehicle from outs ide e ither
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in t he driver's door lock.
When you
unlock your veh icle:
- The anti-theft alarm system is deactivated br iefly.
- The veh icle inter ior lights ill uminate for ap­
proximate ly 30 seconds.
- All turn signa l lights will f lash twice w hen
the car is unlocked.
- After unlock ing the vehicle, yo u have 30 sec­
onds to open a door or the rear lid. After 30
seconds, the vehicle automatically locks and
the ant i-theft a larm system activates again.
The rear lid can be locked or un locked either
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in the driver's door lock.
Unlock ing the ve hicle w ith the remote co ntrol
c::::5 will only unlock the rear lid, to open it, the
lid handle needs to be p ressed .
Locking the vehicle
You can lock the vehicle from o utside e ither by
using the remote control
or by insert ing and
turning the key in the drivers's door lock.
When you
lo ck the vehicle:
- All doors and the rear lid are locked. -
All turn signal lights wi ll flash once when
the car is loc ked .
- The ant i-theft a larm system is ac tiva ted.
The ho rn of the anti -theft alarm system wi ll
sound and t he anti-theft a la rm system read­
iness light, located in the center of the in­
strument panel be low the w indshield on the
r ight side of the air vent, will start to blink.
- The vehicle interior lights turn off.
Automat ic lock ing*
T he au tom atic locking fea ture locks a ll the ve­
hicle doors an d the rear lid when you drive
faster than 9 m ph (15 km/h).
You can unlock t he vehi cle from the i nside by:
- remov ing the key from the igni tion swi tc h
(the vehi cle w ill automatically u nlock itself)
or
- pressi ng the un loc k pa rt of the power lock
sw itch

pull ing the door ha ndle (to open the doo r).
If you wish, yo u can have an a utho rized Aud i
dealer convert your power doo r lock system to
automat ic locking.

_& WARNING
- When you loc k yo ur vehicle from o utside,
nobody- espec ia lly children -shou ld re­
main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when yo u lock the vehicle from the out­
side th e wi ndows cannot be o pened from
the inside.
- Wh en you leav e th e ve hicle, always re ­
move the ign ition key and take it w ith
you. This will preven t passe ngers (chil­
d ren, f or example) from acci denta lly be­
i n g loc ke d in the vehicle s hould they

accidentally press the power locking
switch.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.
@ Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag de­
ployment a ll locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to g ive access to the
vehicle occupants from the outside.
- If the power locking system should mal­
function, you can lock each door individ­
ually using the vehicle key .
- If the power locking system should fail,
you can still open the fue l tank flap in an
emergency
c> page 164.
- You are well advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe!

PANIC Button

The remote controls allows you to:
- lock or unlock the vehicle
- select ively unlock the rear lid.
The turn signals will flash briefly whenever
you lock or unlock the vehicle. Also, the interi­
or light will come on or go off whenever you
open or close the driver's door .
The transm itter and battery are located in the
head o f the remote contro l. The receiver is lo­
cated ins ide the vehicle. The max imum effec ­
tive range depends on several th ings . Remem­
ber, if the battery is weak, the effective range
decreases.
The remote-control key contains a fo ld-out
key that you can use to manually lock or un­
lock the vehicle and to start the engine.
If you need to replace the remote control, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your authorized Aud i dealer. Only then can
you use the key again.

- The remote contro l key is automatically
deactivated when the ignition is switch­
ed on.

-If you use the power locking switch with
the doors closed , remember that all the
vehicle doors will lock.
- Locked doors make it more difficult for
emergency workers to get into the vehi­
cle, which puts lives at risk. Do not leave
anyone behind in the vehicle, especially
children.
Emergency locking
If the power locking system fails (pow er fail­
ure), you will need to lock the passenger door
separately.

For this purpose, a mechan ica l locking device
i s provided on the end panel of the passenger
door (only visible when the door is open) .
• Remove the cap

• Insert the key into the inner slot and turn it
to the right as far as it can go .
After you close the door you w ill no longer be
able to open it from the outside . You can open
it from the inside, however, by pulling on the
door latch tw ice.

A WARNING
-After closing the rear lid, always pull up
on it to make sure that it is p roperly
closed. Otherwise it could open suddenly
when the vehicle is moving .
- To help prevent poisono us exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle, al­
ways keep the rear lid closed whi le driv­
ing. Never transport objects larger than
those which fit complete ly into the lug­
gage area, because then the rear lid can­ not be fully closed.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
pecially with the rear lid left open . A
child cou ld craw l into the car through the
luggage compartment and pull the lid
shut, be coming trapped and unable to
get o ut. To reduce the risk of personal in­
jury, never let c hildren play in or around
your veh icle. Always keep the rear lid as

When will the anti theft ala rm system be
triggered?
When the vehicle is locked , the alarm system
monitors and protects the following parts of
the vehicle:
- engine compartment
- luggage compartment
- doo rs
- ignition
When the system is activated, the alarm will
be triggered if one of the doors, the engine
hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the ign i­
tion is turned on.
The anti-theft alarm system will also go off
when the battery is disconnected.
You can a lso trigger the alarm by pressing the
PANIC button on your remote-control key.
This will alert other people in case of emer­
gency. Press the
PANIC button again to turn
off the alarm .
How is the anti-theft alarm switched off
when triggered?
The alarm system is switched off when you
unlock the vehicle using the remote-control key or when the ignition is sw itched on . The
a larm will also switch itse lf off when it comes
to the end of its cycle.
Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher will blink briefly when
the doors, engine hood and rear lid are prop­
erly closed.
If the emergency flashers do not blink, check
the doors, engine hood and rear lid to make
sure they are properly closed. If you close a
door, the hood or the rear lid with the ant i­
theft alarm switched on, the emergency flash­
ers will blink only after you have closed the
door or lid.

For the anti-theft alarm system to func­
tion properly, make sure all vehicle doors
and windows are closed before leaving the
vehicle.

-Remember -you can still open or close
the power windows for about ten mi­
nutes after the ignition is switched off.
Only when either of the front doors are
opened are the power windows sw itched
off.
- Be careful when closing the windows.
Check to see that no one is in the way, or
serious injury could result!
- Always remove the ignition key whenever
you leave your vehicle .
- If you lock your vehicle from the outside,
no one, especially children, should re­
ma in in the vehicle.
- Do not stick anything on the w indows or
the windsh ield that may interfere with
the driver's field of vision.
(D Tips
-When the doors are opened, the w in­
dows are automat ically lowered 10 mm .
- The windows can still be opened and
closed for about ten m inutes after the
ignition has been turned off. The power
windows are not shut off until one of the
fron t doors is opened.
Convenience close/open feature
You can close or open the windows from out­
side when you lock or unlock your car with the
key.

Reactivating the system after battery
disconnection
Reactivating the convenience close/open fea­
ture
If the vehicle battery is disconnected and then
reconnected, the automatic closing and open­
ing function will not work until it is reactivat­
ed. To reactivate this feature, perform the fol­
lowing steps:
Reactivating close/open feature
• Pull and hold the power window switch until
the window is completely closed.
• Release the sw itch.
• Pull the sw itch again for one second . The au­
tomatic clos ing/opening is now reactivated .

A WARNING
The outlet p lus any appliances plugged in­
to it rema in functional even if the ignition
is switched off or the ignition key is re­
moved. N ever leave children inside the ve­
hicle withou t supe rvision.

plugs that fit properly .

When the engine is off and accessor ies are
still plugged in and are on, the vehicle bat­
tery can still be dra ined .
Storage
General
A WARNING
- Always remove objects from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away
cou ld slide around inside the vehicle
wh ile driving or when accelerating or
when applying the brakes or when driv­ ing around a corner.
- When you are drivi ng make sure tha t
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage locations cannot fa ll out into the footwells. In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake or accelerate.

Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and
can be locked .

Ignition key saf ety lock
Afte r swi tching off the ignition, t he ig nit ion
key can on ly be removed from the ig nition
lock when the se lector lever is in the "P"
(Park) position . After you have removed the
key, the selector lever is locked and cannot be
moved.
Ignition on @
If it is diffic ult to tu rn the key after you have
inserted it into the ignition lock, turn the
steering wheel back and forth. This will take
the load
off the steering lock mechanism and
you will be able to turn the key freely and
start the engine.
Starting the engine @
In this position the engine starts . While the
engine is starting , the power supply to the
headlights and other e lectrica l consumers is
temporari ly interrupted to conserve battery
power. After the engine has started, release
the key and it will return to posit ion
(D .
Before the starter can be operated again the
key must be turned back to position @. The
non -repeat loc k prevents you from damaging
the starter when the engine is runn ing .
A WARNING
-Never remove the key from the ign it ion
lock whi le the vehicle is moving. The
steeri ng wheel will lock causing loss of
c ontrol.
- If you have to leave your vehicle - even
for just a m inute -always remove t he ig­
nition key and take it with you. This is es­
pecially important if you a re going to
leave chi ldren behind in the vehicle. The
children co uld start the engine or use
other vehicle controls. Unsupervised use
of vehicle controls (for examp le, power
windows) can cause serious personal in­
jur ies .
(D Tips
If the vehicle battery has been disconnect­
ed and then reconnected, then you must
l eave the key in position

seconds before you can start the engine.

The engine can only be started with an origi­
nal Audi key.

starts .
A cold engine may at first be loud after it has
been started. This is due to the hydraulic
valves bu ild ing up the oil pressure . Th is nor­
mal and no need for concern .
If the engine does not start immediate ly, stop
trying after 10 seconds and then try to restart
the engine about 30 seconds later .
A WARNING
-Never start or let the engine run in a con-
f ined or enclosed area. Exhaust fumes
from the engine conta in carbon monoxide,
a colorless and odorless gas. Carbon mon­
oxide can be fatal if inhaled .
- Never leave the engi ne idling unattend­
ed. An unat tended veh icle w ith a runn ing
engine poses a danger of personal injury
or theft .
(D Note
-Avo id h igh engine speeds, fast accelera­
tion or heavy engine loads while the en­
gine is still cold. This could damage the
engine.
- T he engine cannot be started by pushing
or towing the vehicle . ..,.

A WARNING
This is how you can reduce the risk of in­
jury when leaving your veh icle.
- Never park the vehicle where it can come
in contact with dry grass, spilled fuel or
any other flammable mater ials.
- Never allow anyone -especia lly small
children -to remain in the vehicle when
it is locked. Locked doors make it more
difficult for rescuers to access the pas­
senger compartment in the event of an
eme rgency. Danger to life!
- Never leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle . Children could re lease the park­
ing brake o r move the gea rshift lever out
of gear. The vehicle could start to roll
away and ca use an accident.
- N o matter wha t the season is, the tem­
perature in a par ked vehicle can rea ch
dangero us levels .
Starting on hills
Applies to vehicles: wit h hill h old ass ist
H ill hold assist ma kes it easie r to sta rt on
h ill s.
The system is act ivated when the brake pedal
i s depressed
for a few s econds .
After releasing the brake pedal, the brake
power is held for a brief moment to prevent
the vehicle from rolling back when start ing . At
th is time, you can easi ly beg in to move your
vehicle.
A WARNING
-- If you did not begin moving immed iate ly
after releasing the brake pedal, under
c e rtain ci rcumstances, the vehicle would
begin to ro ll backwa rd. Depr ess the
b rake ped al immedi ately o r engage the
hand brake .
- Should t he e ngine sta ll, dep ress the
b ra ke ped al immediate ly or eng age the
hand b rake .
- I n or der to prevent the vehicle from roll­
ing back unintentionally when s tarti ng in
s top -and-go traffic, keep the brake pedal
depressed for a few seconds before driv­
ing off.

Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warn ing system warns the driver if
he exceeds a previous ly stored max imum
speed . A warning tone will sound as soon as
the ve hicle speed exceeds the set speed by
about 3 mph (3 km/h). At the same time, a
warning symbo l appea rs in the display.
The speed warn ing system has
two warning
thr esho lds
that f unction independently of
each other and that have somewhat different
purposes:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maxi­ mum speed while you are driving . This setting
will remain in effect unti l yo u tur n off the ..,.

• Always keep both feet in the footwell so
that you are in control of the vehicle at all
times.

A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it deploys. To help
reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between your breast­
bone and the steering wheel.
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the knees and
the lower part of the instrument panel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the
outside of the steering wheel rim with
your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions to help reduce the risk of per­
sonal injury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the
12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Hold­
ing the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands,
arms and head if the driver's airbag in­
flates
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your
face decreases the ability of the supple­
mental driver's airbag to protect you in a
collision.
- Always sit in an upright position and nev­
er lean against or place any part of your
body too close to the area where the air­
bags are located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front
seats and head restraints properly and
make sure that all passengers are prop­
erly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle
is moving. Your seat may move unexpect- edly and you could lose control of the ve­
hicle.
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests
are tilted back, the greater the risk of in­
jury due to incorrect positioning of the safety belt and improper seating posi­
tion .
- Children must always ride in child seats

Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position
is important for safe, relaxed driving .
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the seat for the front
passenger to the following position :
• Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upright position and your back comes in full contact with it whenever the vehicle is
moving.
• Adjust the head restraint so that the upper
edge is as even with the top of your head as
possible but not lower than eye level and so
that it is as close to the back of your head as
possible

• Keep both feet flat on the floor in front of
the front passenger seat.
• Fasten and wear safety belts correctly
