Transmission
S tronic transmission
Introduction
App lies to vehicles : wit h S tro nic
Your veh icle is equipped with a S tronic trans­
miss ion, a lso called a double-clutch system/
tra nsmission.
Power is transfe rred between the engine and
the transm ission by means of two i ndepend­
ent cl utches. They replace the to rque conve rt­
e r of conventional a utomat ic transm iss io ns
and a llow the vehicle to acce le rate w it h out a
noticeab le break in the power flow .

The transm iss ion is in neut ral i n this pos ition.
D -No rmal position fo r driving forward
In this position, the forward gears are auto­
matically shifted up and down, depending on
engine load and vehicle speed.

depressed at s peeds below 5 km/h or when
the ve hicle is stationary ¢& .

S -Sport setting
T he S setting sho uld be se lec ted for sporty
driving. The power reserves of the engine can
be fully explo ited through later upshifts.
T o engage S from N, t he brake peda l m ust be
depressed at speeds below 5 km/h o r when
t h e vehi cle is stationary ¢& .
A. WARNING
- Never p lace the se lector lever i n the R or
P posit ion while the veh icle is moving -
risk of an accident!
- W ith the engine r unning, it is necessary
to hold the vehicle with the foot brake in
all se lector lever positions (except P and
N), because even at idle speed the trans­
fe r of power is never completely inter­
r u pted - t he vehicle "creeps". If t he vehi-
cle is stat io nary and the t rans missio n is
~

engaged, the engine should never be
speeded up unintentionally (e.g. manual­ ly from under the hood). Otherwise the
vehicle will immediately start to move -
sometimes even if the parking brake is
firmly applied - risk of an accident!
- Before you or other persons open the
hood and work on a running engine, the
selector lever must be moved to P and
the parking brake applied firmly - risk of
an accident! Follow the warning stickers.
@ Tips
If you have inadvertently sh ifted into N
while the veh icle is moving, you should re­
move your foo t from the accelerator and
wait until the engi ne speed has dropped to
id le before shifting back to Dor S.
Selector lever lock
Applies to vehicles: with S tro nic
The selector lever lock prevents a gear from
being engaged occidentally and unintention­
ally setting the vehicle in motion .

The selector lever lock is released as follows:
.,. Switch the ignition on.
.,. Step on the brake pedal
and simultaneously
hold down the re lease button.
Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
sitions when the ignition is on. To move the
l ever from these positions the driver must de­
press the brake pedal. As a reminder to the
driver, the following warning appears in the
Transmission 83
instrument cluster display when the se lector
is in P and N:
To start engine or select gear apply foot
brake when stationary
The selector lever lock is effective only when
the vehi cle is stationary and a t speeds below
S km/h . At higher speeds, the lock in the N
pos ition is automat ically switched off.
The selector lever is not locked when rapid
shifts are made through the N position (e.g.
from R to D) . This allows you to "rock " the ve­
hicle if it becomes stuck. If the lever is in the
N position for more than 1 second with the
brake pedal not depressed, the selector lock
engages automatically .
Release button
The release butto n in the selector lever han­
dle prevents accidental shifts into certain se­
lector lever positions . When you press the re­
lease button , the selector lever lock is cancel­
led. In the illustration, the positions in which
the release button has to be pressed are high­
lighted in color

Ignition key removal lock
The ignition key can only be removed after the
ignition is switched off if the selector lever is
in P. As long as the ignition key is removed,
the selector lever is locked in P.
(y Tips
If the se lector lever does not engage,
there is a malfunction . The engine is disa­
bled to prevent th e vehicle from driving off
unintentionally. To allow the selector lever
to engage again, proceed as follows: Press
and release the brake pedal.

Starting the engin e
• The selector lever must be in the P or the N

while it is in gear .
Starting on a hill
• Apply the hand brake firmly .
• With the engine in gear, gradually acceler-
ate and release the hand brake.

° F /-10 °C), it is only possi­
ble to start the engine with the selector lever
in P.
When parking o n level ground, it is s ufficient
to place the selector lever in P . On a steeply
s loping road, you shou ld first apply the park­
ing brake f irmly and then place the selector
lever in P. Th is way, you do not overload the
pawl mechanism and it is easier to move the
selector lever out of P .
A WARNING
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear . If you must leave
your veh icle w ith the engine r unning, set
the park ing brake and engage the park
lock .
- When the engine is running and the transmiss ion is in gear (D, Sor R) or in
"t iptronic" mode, it is essential that you
stop the vehicle with the footbrake.
When idling, the transmission of power does not stop comp letely -the vehicle
"creeps".
- Do not accelerate when you change the
selector lever position w it h the vehicle
stationary and the engine runn ing -risk
of an acc ident!
- Never p lace the selector lever in the R or
N pos ition wh ile the vehicle is mov ing -
risk of an acc ident!
- If you have to bring your vehicle to a stop
while on an incline, keep the foot brake depressed all the way down so that the
veh icle does not start to rol l backward.
You shou ld never ho ld the vehicle using
the clutch if you are going to be s topped
on an incline. If you do, the cl utch w ill
start to slip when it overheats ca used by
the constant overload. This is dangerous
~

because if the vehicle starts to roll
backward, you could cause an accident. If
the clutch should start to slip, you will
feel the vehicle "jerk" and the selector lever display will start blink ing.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re­
duce your speed and shift into a lower gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or apply the brake
pedal too often or too long . Constant
braking causes the brakes to overheat
and substantially reduces braking per­
formance, increases braking distance or
causes complete failure of the brake sys­
tem.
Hill Descent Assist
Applies to vehicles: with S tro nic
Hill Descent Assist helps the driver when driv ­
ing down inclines .
Hill Descent Ass ist is activated by pressing the
b rake wh ile descending when the selector lev­
er is in D/S. The S tronic transmission auto­
mat ically shifts down to a gear suitab le for
the incline. Hill Descent Assist attempts to
maintain the current vehicle speed when the
brak ing occurs, as far as phys ical and techni ­
cal limits allow. It may be necessary to adjust
the speed using the brakes.
Hill Descent Assist switches off when the in­
cline levels out or when the gas pedal is press­
ed.
On vehicles w ith cruise control*~
page 78,
Hill Descent Assist is also activated when the
speed is set.
_&. WARNING
Hill Descent Assist cannot overcome phys i­
cal limitations, so it may not be possible to
ma intain a constant vehicle speed under
all circumstances . Always be ready to ap­
ply the brakes .

Tiptronic allows the driver to shift gears man­
ually.

Switching to manual
"' Move the selector lever to the right out of
the D position . Th e display changes once the
transmission has switched to manual mode.
For examp le,
M4 indicates that 4th gear is
engaged.
Upshifting
"' Tap the selector lever forward (in the tip­
tronic setting)

Switching to manual can be carried out with
the vehicle stationary as well as moving .
When accelerating, the transmission shifts in­
to the next gear in gears 1, 2, 3, 4 and S
shortly before the maximum permissible en- gine speed is reached . ..,.

If you have selected a lower gear than the cur­
rent one, the transmission w ill only shift down
when the engine cannot be overspeeded.
I f kick-down is actuated, the transmiss ion
shifts into a lower gear independently of
speed and engine rpm .
Steering wheel with Tiptronic controls
Applies to vehicles: with S tro nic
The selector paddles allow the driver to keep
both hands on the steering wheel when shift­
ing gears.

Shifting up

The selector paddles on the steering wheel
are activated when the selector lever on the
center console is in D, 5 or in the manual posi­
tion ( Tiptronic mode).
You can also shift gears in the Tiptronic mode
using the selector lever on the center console.
(D Tips
With the gear selector lever in either Dor
5 the transmission will switch back to the
automatic mode if you do not use the pad­
dles within approx . 30 seconds.
Kick-down feature
Applies to vehicles: w it h S tronic
The kick-down feature allows maximum ac­
celeration.
If you depress the accelerator pedal fully be­
yond the full-throttle position, the transmis·
sion automatically downshifts one gear, de·
pending on vehicle speed and eng ine rpm. The
upshift into the next higher gear takes place
as soon as the maximum specified engine
speed is reached.
.&_ WARNING i-==
Please note that the drive wheels can spin
if the kick-down is used on a smooth slip·
pery road -risk of skidding!
Launch Control Program
Applies to veh icles: w it h S t ronic
The Launch Control Program permits maxi­
mum acceleration.
In order to use Launch Control, the ASR (Anti­
S lip Regulation) must be disabled . When ASR
is disabled , the ESC warning/indicator light
fl
in the instrument cluster illuminates. So that
Launch Control can be used, the engine must
be at operating temperature and the steering
wheel must not be turned.
.,. With the engine running, briefly press the
ESC button . The message "Stabilization pro­
gram off" or "Sport control Warning! Re­
stricted stability" in the driver information
system display .
.,. Shift the gear lever to "5" or the tiptronic
position .
.,. Step on the brake pedal with your left foot
and keep the brake pedal fully depressed for
at least one second.
.,. With yo ur right foot, step on the accelerator
to the wide-open throttle position or Kick·
down. The eng ine speed settles at about
3,200 rpm .
.,. Take your left foot off the brake. ..,.

_& WARNING
-Always adapt your driving to the traffic
flow.
- Only use Launch Control when road and
traffic conditions allow it and other driv­
ers will not be endangered or annoyed by
your driving and the acceleration of the
vehicle .
- Make sure that ESC remains enabled .
With the ESC disabled, the veh icle could
brake away, particularly on a slick and
slippery road -risk of skidding!
- Once acce lerat ion is finished, switch ASR
on again by briefly pushing the ESC but­
ton.
@ Tips
- The transm ission temperature may in­
crease significantly after using the
Launch Control Program. If that hap­
pens, the program may not be available
for a few minutes. I t will be availab le
again after a coo l-down period.
- When accelerating using the Launch
Control program, all vehicle parts are
subject to heavy loads . This can result in
increased wear.
Back-up program
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic
In the event of a system malfunction, there is
a back-up program.
I n the event of system mal func tion, the auto­
matic transmission switches to the fail-safe
mode. A ll of the selector lever position dis­
plays for the automatic transmission are high­
lighted with a light background in the instru­
ment cluster display . In some cases you can­
not use reverse gear any more .
If the transmission switches to fail-safe mode, you should take the vehicle to an au­
thorized Audi dealership as soon as possible
to have the condition corrected.

Clutch is overheating
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic
• Clutch is overheating! Please stop vehi­
cle!
If the symbols are illuminated, the clutch is
overheating and could be damaged if you con­
tinue to drive. Stop the vehicle and a llow the
transmission to cool with the se lector lever in
the P posit ion while the engine runs at idle.
If
the warning does not turn off, do not continue
driving. See your authorized A udi dealer or
qualified repair facility for assistance. Other­
wise serious transmission damage could re­
sult. Once the indicator light has turned off,
drive to your authorized Audi dealer or quali ­
fied repa ir facility immed iately to have the
malfunction corrected.
Selector lever emergency release
Applies to vehicles: wi th S tronic
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selec ­
tor lever can be released in an emergency.

your author ized Audi dealer for assistance, if
necessary.
Removing the selector lever boot
.,. Activate the parking brake .
.,. Carefully pry the selector lever boot out o f
t h e trim ® using a sma ll screwdriver .
.,. Pull both sides of the se lector lever boot up-
ward in the direction of the arrow @ .
.,. Fold the selector lever boot upward.

If the vehicle must be pushed or towed due to
a power failure (for example, the battery is
discharged), the selector lever must first be
moved to the N pos ition using the emergency
r e lease mechanism.

Only move the selector lever out of the P
position when the parking brake is activat­
ed. Otherwise, the vehicle could start to
move unintentiona lly when the selector
lever is moved out of the P position.

Never push the vehicle or apply force to
the rear spoiler -it could be damaged.
@ Tips
Clean the spoiler compartment every 2 to
3 months . The spoiler compartment must
always be free of ice, snow, leaves or other
debris.
Braking
General information
What affects braking efficiency?
Oper ating condit ions and d riving hab it s
T he brakes on today's automobi les are st ill
s ubject to wear, depending largely on opera t­
ing conditions and dr iv ing habi ts
c> & . On
vehicles that are e ither driven mostly in stop ­
and-go city traffic or are d riven hard , the
b rake pads should be checked by you r author­
i zed Audi dealer more often than specified i n
the
Warr ant y & Maint enan ce booklet . Failure
to have your brake pads inspected can res ult
in red uced brake performance.
On steep slopes, you shou ld use the brak ing
effect of the eng ine. This way, you p revent un­
necessa ry wear on the brake system . If you
must use yo ur brakes, do not hold the brakes
down continuously. Pump th e brakes at inter­
vals.
Noises may occur when braking d epending on
the speed, braki ng force and outside condi­
tions such as temperature and humidity.
Moistu re or road salt
Unde r certain conditions, for example, w hen
driving through water or ve ry heavy rain, or
even after washing your vehicle, the braking
effect can be reduced d ue to moisture (or in
fre ezing conditions ice) on the brake pads . A
few ca utious brake applicat ions should dry off
the b rake pads or remove any ice coatings.
The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced
when th e vehicle is driven on a salt-covered

road and the b rakes are no t used. Likewise ,
you clean off accumulated salt coating from brake d iscs and pads with a few cautious ap ­
plications of the brake

Cor ro sion
T here may be a tendency for dir t to build up
on the brake pads and corrosion to form on
the discs if the car is not driven regu larly or
on ly fo r short trips with litt le use of the
brakes.
If the brakes are not used frequently, or if cor­
rosion has formed on the discs, it is advisable
to clean off the pads and discs by braking
firmly a few times from a moderately high
speed

Faults in the brak e syst em
If you shou ld notice a sudden increase in
brake pedal trave l, then one of the two brake
c ircuits may have fai led

Low brake fluid lev el
Malfunctions can occur in the brake system if
the b rake fluid level is too low. The brake fluid
level is monitored electronica lly.
Brake booster
T he brake booster inc reases the pressure that
you generate with the brake peda l. It works
o nl y when the engine is running

Brake lining wear status
Brake lining wear may be checked by visual in­
spection of the condition of the brake pads
through the open ings in the wheel. If neces­
sary, the wheel may be removed for t his in­
spection

A WARNING

-You should perform braking maneuvers
for the purpose of cleaning the brake
system only if road conditions permit.
Other road users must not be put at risk -
you may cause an accident!
