BRAKE/ ((D) Brake system
This warning/indicator light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is a malfunction in the ABS, or when the park­
ing brake is set.
If the. (USA models) . (Canada models)
symbol flashes in the display with the parking
brake released , there is a malfunction in the
brake system. In addition to the symbol, one
of two messages appears in the display:
Stop vehicle and check brake fluid level
Stabilization program and ABS fault! See

The light . (USA)/ . (Canada) illuminates
when the ignition is turned on. It goes o ut af­
ter the engine has been started and the park­ ing brake is fully released . This indicates that
the brake warn ing light is funct ion ing proper­
ly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is cranking or the parking
brake is applied, there may be a malfunction
in the electrical system. In this case, contact
your Audi dealer.
If the ABS fa ils, the ABS warn ing/ indicator
light

Parking brak e set
The parking brake warning light./. (Cana­
da models) illuminates whe n the park ing
b rake is set. In addit ion, a warning tone will
sound after you have driven for longer than 3
seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/h).

- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard! Stop the car an d get professiona l
assistance.
- USA models: If both, the. warning
light and the
Ill warning light come on
at the same time, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard brak ing . Lock-up
of the rear whee l brakes can cause loss of
vehicle control and an accident. Have
yo ur vehicle repaired immed iately by
you r autho rized Aud i dealer o r a quali­
fied workshop . D rive slowly and avo id
s u dden, hard brake application .
-Canada models: If both, the brake warn ­
ing light . and the ABS warning light
[iJ come on at the same t ime, the rear
wheels co uld lock up first unde r hard
braking . Lock -up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss o f vehicle control and an
acc ident. Have your vehicle repaired im­
med iate ly by your authorized Aud i dealer or a qualified workshop
. Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application .
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is released, or lights up
while you are dr iving, the f lu id leve l in
the brake flu id reservo ir is too low . If you
be lieve that it is safe to do so, proceed
immed iate ly at low speed to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop and have the brake sys tem inspect­
ed .
- Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressu re on the brake pedal to stop you r
vehicle . Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with maximum stopping power
in critical s ituations. You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could lead to an accident.

The . (USA models) /. (Canada models)
indicato r light monitors the safety systems
e.g. (a irbags, pre tensioners) and ill uminates
f or a few se conds eac h time you swi tch the ig­
nition on.
If the . (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
i ndicato r ligh t does no t go o ut, o r if it illum i­
na tes while yo u are driving, or if it starts to
blink, then there is a mal function somewhe re
in the system. If the light does not i lluminate
when you switch on the ignition , th is also
means there is a malfunct ion.
_& WARNING
If yo u have a ma lfunction in the safety sys­
tems, co ntact your authorized Aud i dea ler
immediately. Otherwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acc i­
dent.

@ For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emissions, do not let your
veh icle stand and warm up. Be ready to
drive off immediately after start ing your
veh icle. Maintain moderate speed until the
engine is comp letely warm. Remember,
the engine performs best at operating
temperature.
Stopping the engine
• Turn the ign ition key to position@

&_ WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop. The
full function of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and serious injuries.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the
ignition key . The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
(D Note
Do not stop the engine immediate ly after
hard or extended driving. Keep the engine
running for approximately two minutes to
prevent excessive heat build-up.

When the parking brake is set, it prevents the
vehicle from rolling away unintentionally.

• Pull the pa rking brake lever all the way up.

If you should drive off with the parking brake
still set, a warning tone will sound and the
fol low ing will appear in the instrument clus­
ter to remind you to release the parking
brake:

set and you switch on the ignition.

Always release the park ing brake com-
pletely. A partially engaged brake will
overheat the rear brakes, reduce their ef­
fectiveness and cause excessive wear. This
could lead to brake failure and an accident. .,..

On ly after the vehi cle has come to com­
plete stop, should you f irm ly set the park­
ing brake and either move the selector lev­
er into "P".

A WARNING
This is how you can reduce the risk of in­
jury when leaving your veh icle.
- Never park the vehicle where it can come
in contact with dry grass, spilled f uel or
any other flammable mater ials.
- Never allow anyone -especially small
children -to remain in the vehicle when
it is locked . Locked doors make it more
difficult for rescuers to access the pas­
senger compartment in the event of an
eme rgency. Danger to life!
- Never leave ch ild ren unsupervised in the
vehicle . Children co uld re lease the park­
ing brake. The vehicle co uld start to roll
away and cause an accident.
- No matter what the season is, the tem­
perature in a par ked vehicle can reach
dange ro us levels.

A WARNING
- If you did not begin moving immed iate ly
after releasing the brake pedal, under
certain ci rc u mstances, the vehicle would
beg in to rol l backwa rd. Dep ress the
bra ke peda l immedi ate ly o r engage the
hand brake .
- Should the e ngine sta ll, dep ress the
brake peda l immedi ate ly or engage the
hand brake .
- I n order to prevent the vehicle from roll­
i n g back unintentionally when s tarting in
stop -and -go traffic, keep the brake pedal
depressed for a few seconds before driv­
ing off.

Speed warning system
Overv iew
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns the driver if
he exceeds a previous ly stored max imum
speed . A warning tone will sound as soon as
the ve hicle speed exceeds the set speed by
about 3 mph (3 km/h). At the same time, a
warning symbo l appea rs in the disp lay.
The speed warning system has two warning
thre sholds that function independently of
each other and that have somewhat different
purposes:

You can use speed warning 1 to set the maxi­ mum speed while you are driving . This setting
will remai n in effect until yo u tur n
off the .,..

engag ed, the engine shou ld neve r be

vehicle will immediately start to move -
sometimes even if the parking brake is

hood and work on a running eng ine, the
selector lever must be move d to P and

Selector lever lock
The selec tor Lever Lo ck prevents a gear from
being engaged occidentally and unintention­
ally setting the vehicle in motion .

The selector lever lock is released as follows:

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po­
sitions when the ignition is on. To move the
leve r from t hese positions the d river m ust de­
press the brake pedal. As a reminder to the
driver, the fo llowing warning appears in the
inst rument cluster d isp lay when the selector
is in P and N :
To start engine or select gear apply foot
brake when stationar y
The selec tor leve r lock is effec tive on ly w hen
t h e veh icle is stationary and a t speeds below
3 m ph (5 km/h). At higher speeds, the lock in
t h e N position is automatica lly switched off .
T he selec tor leve r is not locked whe n rap id
shifts are made through the N posi tion (e.g.
from R to D). This a llows you to "rock" the ve­
hicle if it becomes stuck. If the lever is in the
N position for more than 1 second with the
brake pedal not depre ssed, the selector lock
engages au tomatically.
Release button
T he re lease bu tton in the selector lever han ­
dle prevents accidenta l shifts into certain se­
lector leve r positions. When you press the re ­
lease button, the selector lever lock is cancel­
led. In the illustration, the posit ions i n which
the re lease button has to be p res sed are high ­
lighted in color ~
fig. 90 .
Ignition key remo val lock
The ign it ion key can only be removed after the
ignition is sw itched off if the selector lever is
in P . As long as the igni tion key is removed ,
the selector lever is locked in P.
(D Tips
If the se lector lever does not engage,
the re is a malfunction. The engine is disa­
bled to prevent t he veh icle from drivi ng off
unintentionally . To allow the selector lever
to engage aga in, p roceed as follows: Press
an d release the bra ke peda l.

Driving Notes

Starting on a hill

°F /-10 °C), it is only possi­
ble to start the engine with the selector lever
in P.
When parking on level ground, it is sufficient
to place the selector lever in P. On a steeply
sloping road, you should first apply the park­
ing brake firmly and then place the selector
lever in P. This way, you do not overload the
pawl mechanism and it is easier to move the
selector lever out of P .
A WARNING
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear . If you must leave
your veh icle with the engine running, set
the parking brake and engage the park
lock .
- When the engine is running and the
transmission is in gear (D, Sor R) or in
"t iptroni c" mode, it is essential that you
stop the vehicle with the footbrake .
When idling, the transmission of power
does not stop completely - the vehicle
"creeps".
- Do not accelerate when you change the selector lever position with the vehicle
stationary and the engine running - risk
of an accident!
- Never place the selector lever in the R or
N position while the vehicle is moving -
risk of an accident!
- If you have to bring your vehicle to a stop
while on an incline, keep the foot brake depressed all the way down so that the
vehicle does not start to roll backward .
You should never hold the vehicle using
the clutch if you are going to be stopped
on an incline. If you do, the clutch w ill
start to slip when it overheats caused by
the constant overload. This is dangerous .,.

Homelink
Universal remote
control
General information
The Homelink universal remote control can
be programmed with hand-held transmitters
from existing equipment .
You must first program the Homelink trans­
mitter before you can use the system
~ page 88 , Programming the Homelink
transmitter.
In order to program the Homelink transmit­
ter for devices utilizing rolling code, a second
person on a ladder who can safely reach the
garage door opener motor is recommended.
It is also necessary to locate the "learn" but­
ton on your garag e door open er motor . Refer
to the ope rating instructions for the opener ,
as the location and color of this bu tton may
vary by manufacturer .
You can still use the original remote control
for the device at any time.
A WARNING
-
- Never use the Homelink transmitter
with any garage door opener that does
have not the safety stop and reverse fea­
ture as required by federal safety stand­
ards. This includes any garage door open­
er model manufactured before April 1,
1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot de­
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current feder­
al safety standards. Using a garage door
opener without these features increases
risk of serious injury or death.
- For safety reasons never release the
parking brake or start the engine while
anyone is standing in front of the vehicle.
- A garage door or an estate gate may
sometimes be set in motion when the
Homelink remote control is being pro­
grammed. If the device is repeatedly ac- tivated, this can overstrain motor and
damage its electrical components - an
overheated motor
is a fire hazard!
- To avoid possible injuries or property
damage, please always make absolutely
certain that no persons or objects are lo­
cated in the range of motion of any
equipment being operated.

cl e, firmly press and hold t he Home link
bu tton prev iously progr ammed in phases
1 and 2 fo r two seconds and release . R e­
peat this seque nce
twice.

re lease sequence up to three t imes to com­
plete t he trai ning process .
.,. Homelink should now activate your rolling
code equipped device .
If the S minute time limit is exceeded , the
emergency flashers will flash one time to in ­
dicate that the p rocess has been te rm ina ted .
In this case, repeat steps 4 t hrough 9.
If the emergency flashers do not flash
three
times (afte r about lS -60 seconds) , program­
ming was not successful. In this case, repeat
steps 4 through 9 .
Remote contro l units for garage door openers
in Canada are set to stop transmitting radio
fr eque ncy signa ls afte r two seconds . This t ime

- Before descending a steep grade, reduce
speed and shift transm iss ion into a lowe r

the brakes or hold the pedal down too
long or too often . This cou ld cause the
brakes to get hot and diminish braking
efficiency.
- Do not "ride the b rakes" by resting your
foot on the pedal when yo u do not intend
to brake . Th is may cause the brakes to
overheat, premature wear and increased
stopp ing distance.
- Under certain climat ic and operating
condit ions such as passing throug h wa­
ter, driving in heavy rai n or after wash ing
the vehicle, the effect iveness of the
brakes can be reduced. In winter, ice can
accumulate on the brake pads, lini ngs,
discs and d rums. Carefully apply brakes
f or a test . B rakes wi ll dry and ice coat­
ings wi ll be cleaned
off after a few ca re ­
ful brake applications.
- Driv ing for an ex tended pe riod of time on
salt -covered roa ds without using your
brakes can also affect braking efficiency.
Clean
off accumulated salt coating from
brake discs and pads with a few cautious
brake applicat ions.
- If you damage the front spoiler, or if you install a different spoiler, be sure the air
flow to the front brakes is not obstruct­
ed . Otherwise the brake system could
overheat reducing the eff ectiveness of
the ent ire brake system.
- Failure of one bra ke c ircuit will impair
the brak ing capability resulting in an in­
cr eased stopp ing distan ce. Avoid dr iv ing
the ve hicle and have it towed to the near­
est Aud i dea le r or q ualified workshop .
- Never le t the vehicle ro ll to a stop w ith
the engine shu t off.

-If the brake booster is not working, the
brake peda l must be pressed considera­
bly harder to make up for the lack of
booster assistance.
Electro-mechanical
power assist
The ele ctro-mechanical power assist helps
the driver when steering .
The degree of power assist is electronically
matched to veh icle speed.
The powe r steering system assists the driver
so that he can steer the vehicle with reduced
physical effort.
Power steer ing will not work if the engine is
off . As a result, the steering wheel will be hard
to turn .
A WARNING
If the system develops a problem, you
must seek qualified professiona l assis­
tance.

If there is an electronic malfunction, ser­
votronic
will still function like a conven­
tiona l powe r steering system, providing a
constant steering support force tha t is no
l onger proportionate to the vehicle speed.
This is most noticeable when t urning the
steering wheel at low speeds (for example
when parking), - more effort w ill be re­
quired than usual.
- Be aware of the different than usual
steering response and adjust your steer­
ing force accordingly.
- Have the problem checked and set right
by an authori zed Aud i dea ler as soon as
possible.
