CD only functions when the ignition is
sw itched on. To prevent engine damage, p lease
observe the following notes about the tempera­
ture ranges.
Cold range
If on ly the LEDs in the left area of the gauge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­ perature yet. Avoid high engine speeds, full ac­
celerating and heavy engine loads .
Normal range
The engine has reached its operating tempera­
ture once the LEDs up to the center of the gauge
turn on. If
the . indicator light in the Infotain­
ment system display turns on, the coolant tem­
perature is too high

(I;} Note
-Aux iliary head lights and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheating during
high outside temperatures and heavy en ­
gine load.
- The front spoiler also helps to distribute
cooling air correctly while driving. If the
spoiler is damaged, the cooling effect will
be impaired and the risk of the engine over­
heating w ill increase. See an authorized
Audi dealer or author ized Audi Service Fa ­
cility for assistance .
Fuel level
The indicator@ only func tions when the ignition
i s sw itched on. If the fuel level drops below 1.9
gal (7
L), a red LED will light up and the rD indi­
cator light will turn on

blinks red when the fuel level is very low.

@ Note
Never drive until the tank is completely emp­
ty. The irregular supply of fuel that results
from that can cause engine misfires. Uncom­
busted fuel will then enter the exhaust sys­
tem. Th is can cause overheating and damage
to the catalytic converter.
Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
functions.
With some indicator lights, messages may ap ­
pear and warning signals may sound. The indica ­
tor lights and messages in the display can be cov­
ered by other displays. To show them again, se­
lect the tab for indicator lights and messages us­
ing the multifunction steering wheel
¢ page 17. If there are several malfunct ions,
you can display them one at a time us ing the
thumbw heel.
Some ind icator lights in the d isplay can display in
several colors .
Overview
Some indicator lights turn on briefly as a function
check when you switch the ign ition on. These sys­
tems are marked with a
./ in the following tables.
I f one of these indicator lights does not turn on,
there is a ma lfunction in that system.

Applies to: vehicles with engine speed limitation
(II Maximum engine speed : XXXX rpm
The engine speed is automatically lim ited to the
speed d isplayed in the driver information system .
This protects the engine from overheating .
The engine speed limitation deactivates once the
engine is no longer in the critical temperature range and you have released the accelerator ped­
a l once.
If the engine speed limitation was activated by
an engine control malfunction, the
rl indicator
light also turns on. Make sure the engine speed
does not go
above the speed d isplayed, for exam­
ple when downsh ift ing. Drive to an autho rized
Aud i dealer o r authorized Aud i Service Facility im ­
mediately to have the malfunction corrected.

Avoid full acceler ation
You sho uld rare ly t rave l a t t he maxim um vehicle
speed . High speeds cause a disproportionately
h igh increase in fuel consumption, emissions and
traffic noise . Slower driving saves fuel.
Reduce idling time
It pays off to stop the eng ine, for example when
at ra ilroad crossings or traffi c lights w ith longer
red lights . Stopping the engine for 30 -40 sec­
onds already saves more fuel than the amount of
extra fuel needed to restart the engine.
I t takes a very long time in idle to wa rm the en­
gine up to operating tempera ture . Wea r and
emissions are especially high in the warm -up
p hase . Therefore, you should begin driving im ­
mediately after starting the engine. Avoid high
RPMs while do ing th is.
Hav e ma intenanc e performed r egularly
By having maintenance performed regu lar ly on
your vehicle, you can he lp to reduce fuel con ­
sumption before yo u even start to drive. The
maintenance condition of your vehicle not only
affects traffic safety and long-term va lue but al­
so impacts
fu el con sumpt ion .
A poorly maintained engine can lead to fuel con ­
sumpt ion that is 10% higher than norma l.
A lso check the
o il l evel when refueling . The oil
consumpt ion
depends large ly on the engine load
and speed. It is normal for the oil consumption
of a new eng ine to reach its lowest point only af­
ter a certain amount of use. Therefore, the oil
consumption can only be properly judged after
approx imately 3,000 m i (S,000 km) have been
driven.
Avoid short trips
The engine and exhaust clean ing system must
reach their opt imal
op erating temp eratur e to ef­
fective ly reduce consumpt ion and emiss ions.
A co ld engine uses a disproportionately h igh
amount of fuel. The eng ine reaches operating
temperature and consumpt ion normalizes only
afte r approx imately
2.5 miles (4 km) .
Driving
@ Note
Do not leave engine idling unattended after
start ing. If warning lights sho uld come on to
i ndicate improper operation, they would go
unheeded. Extended idling also produces
heat, which could resu lt in overheating or
other damage to the veh icle o r other proper­
ty.

vehicle's Emission Contro l System and other
impo rtant ve hicle components.

The ESC is designed to function in levels . Depend­
ing on the level selected, the ESC stabilization funct
ion is limited or switched off. The amount of
stab ilizat ion control will differ depending on the
level.
T he following examples are unusua l situations
where it may make sense to switch sport mode
o n in order to allow the wheels to spin:
- Rocking the vehicle to free it when it is stuck
- Dr iving in deep snow or on loose ground

Brakes
New brake pads
New brake pads do not achieve their full braking
effect d uring the first 250 mi (400 km) . They
must be "broken in" first . Howeve r, you can com­
pensate fo r th e slig htly reduced b raking force by
pressing fi rm ly on t he b rake ped al. Avo id heavy
bra king d uring the brea k-i n pe riod .

-The efficiency of the brakes can also be im­
paired by driving for long stretches on roads
covered with salt without using the brakes .
You can remove salt deposits from the
brake rotors and pads by carefully applying
the brakes severa l t imes .
- If the front spoiler is damaged or you install
another spoiler, make sure the front wheel
brakes are vent ilated proper ly . Otherwise,
the b rake system could overheat, w hich re­
duces the ir effectiveness.
- Failure of a brake c ircuit impa irs b raking
perfo rman ce , which increases brak ing dis ­
tan ce. Avoid d riving the vehicle and have it
towed it to the nearest authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility .
- Never let the vehicle roll while t he engine is
stopped because this increases the risk of an
accident.
- If the brake booster is not working, you will
have to press much harder on the brake
peda l to compensate for the lack of the
booster.
@ Note
- Never let the brakes "rub" by pressing the
pedal light ly when braking is not actually
necessary. This causes the brakes to over­
heat and increases braking d istance and
causes wear.
- Before driving downhi ll a long distance on a
steep h ill, decrease your speed and select a
lower gear. This makes use of the engine
braking effect and relieves the brakes . If
you need to brake additionally, brake in in­
tervals and not conti nuous ly .
0) Tips
- If the brake booster is not working, you
must press the brake pedal with much more
fo rce t han normal.
- If you retrofit your vehicle with a front spoil­
er, whee l covers o r similar items, make sure
t h at the a ir flow to the front whee ls is not
i nte rru pted. Ot herw ise the brake system
ca n become too ho t.

Electromechanical
steering
The electromechanical steering supports the
driver 's steering movements .
Power steering adap ts elec troni cally based on
the vehicle speed .
Indicator li ghts and me ssages
• Stee ring: m alfun ction! Ple ase stop vehicle
If this indica to r li ght tur ns on and stays on and
this message appears, the powe r steering may
have failed.
Stop the veh icle in a safe location as soon as pos­
s ible. Do
n o t cont inue d riving. See an autho rized
Audi dealer or authorized A udi Service Facility for
assistance .

dri vin g
If the indicator l ight turns on, the steering wheel
may be more d ifficult to move or more sensit ive
t h an usual. The steer ing whee l may also be at an
angle when d riving stra ight.
Drive slowly to an authorized Aud i dealer or au­
thorized Aud i Serv ice Facility to have the mal­
funct ion corrected.
(D Tips
If the . or (;r,ij ind icator light only stays on
fo r a short t ime, yo u may continue d riving.
All wheel drive (quattro)
In all wheel drive, all four wheels are powered.
Gener al informat ion
In all wheel dr ive, the dr iving power is divided be­
tween all four wheels . This happens automatical ­
ly depending on your dr iv ing behavior as well as
t h e cur rent road condit ions. A lso
see ~ page 86,
Electronic stabilization control (ESC).
The all wheel dr ive concept is des igned for high
engine power . You r vehicle is except ionally pow­
erfu l and has excellent driv ing cha racter istics
bot h unde r normal d riving conditions and o n

snow and ice. Always read and follow safety pre­
cautions

Winter tires
By using all wheel drive, your vehicle has good
forward motion with standard tires in winter con­
ditions. However, in winter we recommend using
winter or all season tires on
all four wheels, be­
cause this will improve the
broking effect.
Snow chains
If there are snow chain laws, snow chains must
also be used on vehicles with all wheel drive
c::> page 259, Snow chains.
Replacing tires
For vehicles with all wheel drive, only wheels with
the same rolling circumference should be used .
Avoid using tires with different tread depths
c::> page 251, New tires or wheels.
Offroad vehicle?
Your Aud i is not an offroad vehicle - there is not
enough ground clearance. For this reason, avoid
difficult terrain.
,& WARNING
- Also, in vehicles with all wheel drive, adapt
your driv ing style to the current road and
t ra ffic conditions. Do not let the increased
safety provided tempt you into taking risks,
because this increases the r isk of an acci­
dent.
- The braking ability of your vehicle is limited
to the traction of the wheels. In this way, it
is not different from a two wheel drive vehi­
cle. Do not be tempted to accelerate to a
high speed when the road is slippery, be­
cause this increases the risk of an accident.
- Note that on wet streets, the front wheels
can "hydroplane" if driving at speeds that
are too high. Unlike front whee l drive
vehicles, the engine does not rev higher sud­
denly when the vehicle begins hydroplaning.
For this reason, adapt your speed to the
road conditions to reduce the risk of an acci­
dent.

Rear spoiler
Applies to: vehicles with retractable rear spoile r
The extendoble rear spoiler increases driving sta­
bility.

The rear spoiler retracts and extends. It can be
activated in various operat ing modes (manua l
mode or automatic mode).
Automatic mode (normal operation)
- Automatic extension: the rear spoiler w ill auto­
matically extend when speeds exceed approxi­
mately 75 mph (120 km/h)
- Automatic retraction: the rear spoiler w ill auto­
matically retract when speeds decrease to un­
der approximately 50 mph (80 km/h).
Manual mode
- Extend ing manually : briefly tap the
c::> fig. 95
button to fully extend the rear spoiler .
- Retracting manually: when driving at speeds
below approximately 10 mph (20 km/h), press
and hold the b utton to retract the rear spoiler.
When at speeds between 10 mph (20 km/h)
and 75 mph (120 km/h), the rear spoiler will
completely retract when you tap the button.

The rear spoiler may not have extended due to a
malfunction . This could change the vehicle's driv­
ing characteristics at high speeds . Do not drive
faster than 85 mph (140 km/h) . Drive to an au-
thorized Audi dea ler or authorized Audi Service

Facility immediately to have the malfunction cor­
rected. The color of the indicator light depends
on the vehicle speed.
A WARNING
-
Driving at higher speeds without the rear
spoiler deployed can impair handling charac­
teristics, making the vehicle harder to con­
trol.
- Always make sure that the spoiler is de­
ployed when driving at speeds over 85 mph
(140 km/h) . If the rear spoiler warning/ind i­
cator lig ht in the instrument cluste r comes
on, the rear spoiler may not have deployed.
- Never drive at speeds higher than 85 mph
(140 km/h) if the spoile r is not deployed.
Have the spo iler inspected as soon as possi ­
ble by an author ized Audi dealer or qua lified
works hop .
- Always obey speed l imits and othe r traffic
laws .
A WARNING
Improper operation of t he rear spoiler can
cause crushing injuries.
- Always make sure that nobody, especia lly
children, is in the way when the rear spoi ler
is deployed or retracted .

-Never push on the vehicle on the rear spo il­
er. This cou ld cause damage.
- To p reve nt damage to the rear spoiler do
not lean o r place anyt hing on it.

- Only ope rate the rear spoiler manually when
the luggage compartment lid is close and
the rear spoiler mov ing parts are not
blocked. Otherwise, damage could occur .
(j) Tips
Clean the rear spoiler compartment eve ry 2 to
3 months . To function co rrectly, the rear
spoiler must be free of ice, snow and leaves .

Energy management
Your vehicle is equipped with an intelligent ener­
gy management system for distributing electrici ­
ty. This significantly improves the starting ability
and increases the vehicle battery life.
(D Tips
- If you drive short distances frequent ly, the
vehicle battery may not charge enough
wh ile driving. As a result, convenience func­
tions for electr ical equipment may be tem­
pera rily unavailable .
- The vehicle battery w ill gradually drain if
the vehicle is not driven for long per iods of
t ime, or if electr ical equ ipment is used
when the engine is not runn ing. To ensure
that the veh icle can still be started, the
elect rical eq uipment w ill be red uced or
sw itched
off.
Information about data
recorded by vehicle
control modules
Your vehicle is not equipped with a crash data re­
corder . This dev ice is installed by some veh icle
manufacturers to record data about crashes so
t h at it can be ana lyzed later. Crash data reco rd ­
ers are also called " Event Data Recorders (EDR)".
In some legal jurisdictions, it is not permitted to
access or down load data recorded by pre-instal­
led crash data recorders in orde r to evaluate a
crash without clear consent of the vehicle owner.
Your vehicle is not equ ipped w ith a crash data re­
corder . However it does contain a variety of e lec­
tronic control modules for various vehicle sys­
tems such as engine function, exha ust treatment
or airbags and safety belts.
T hese electronic contro l modu les record veh icle
data du ring normal driv ing fo r diagnosis and re­
pair purposes. The record ing capability of the
electronic control modules is limited to data only
-no sound is recorded . If the contro l module de ­
tects a system ma lfunction or other change in
status, a very limited amount of data is recorded
for an extremely small period of time. Data that
