226 DRIVING AND OPERATING
Fuel
Use the recommended fuel for proper
vehicle maintenance.
For the 2.0L L4 turbo engine (LTG),
use unleaded petrol with a posted
octane rating of 95 RON or higher.
Unleaded petrol rated at 91 RON can
be used, but acceleration and fuel
economy will be reduced, and an
audible knocking noise may be heard.
If this occurs, use petrol rated at 95
RON as soon as possible, otherwise
the engine could be damaged. If heavy
knocking is heard when using
unleaded petrol rated at 95 RON, the
engine needs service.
For the 2.5L L4 engine (LCV) and the
3.6L V6 engine (LGX), use unleaded
petrol with a posted octane rating of
91 RON or higher, otherwise an
audible knocking noise may be heard.
If heavy knocking is heard when using
gasoline rated at 91 RON or higher,
the engine needs service.
For the 3.6L V6 twin turbo engine
(LF4), use unleaded petrol with a
posted octane rating of 95 RON or
higher. If the octane is less than 95RON, the engine could be damaged
and repairs would not be covered by
the vehicle warranty. If heavy
knocking is heard when using petrol
rated at 95 RON octane, the engine
needs service.
Caution
Do not use fuels with any of the
following conditions; doing so may
damage the vehicle and void its
warranty:
. Fuel with any amount of
methanol, methylal, and
aniline. These fuels can
corrode metal fuel system
parts or damage plastic and
rubber parts.
. Fuel containing metals such
as methylcyclopentadienyl
manganese tricarbonyl
(MMT), which can damage
the emissions control system
and spark plugs.
(Continued)
Caution (Continued)
.Fuel with a posted octane
rating of less than the
recommended fuel. Using this
fuel will lower fuel economy
and performance, and may
decrease the life of the
emissions catalyst.
Fuel Additives
Gasoline should contain detergent
additives that help prevent engine and
fuel system deposits from forming.
Clean fuel injectors and intake valves
will allow the emission control system
to work properly. Some gasoline does
not contain sufficient quantities of
additives to keep fuel injectors and
intake valves clean. To make up for
this lack of detergency, consult your
dealer for the GM approved additive
treatment. Add this additive to the
fuel tank at every engine oil change or
every 15 000 km (9,000 mi), whichever
occurs first.

VEHICLE CARE 243
meeting the dexos1 specification are
marked with the dexos1
approved logo.
Caution
Failure to use the recommended
engine oil or equivalent can result
in engine damage not covered by
the vehicle warranty.
Viscosity Grade
Use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade engine
oil for the 2.0L L4 turbo engine (LTG),
3.6 V6 Engine (LGX), and the 3.6L V6
twin turbo engine (LF4).
Use SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade engine
oil for the 2.5L L4 engine (LCV). SAE
0W-20 may be used as an alternative.
Cold Temperature Operation: In an
area of extreme cold, where the
temperature falls below −29 °C(−20 °F), an SAE 0W-30 oil may be
used for the 2.0L L4 turbo engine and
the 3.6L V6 engines. An oil of this
viscosity grade will provide easier cold
starting for the engine at extremely
low temperatures. When selecting an
oil of the appropriate viscosity grade,
it is recommended to select an oil of
the correct specification. See
“Specification
”earlier in this section.
Engine Oil Additives/Engine Oil
Flushes
Do not add anything to the oil. The
recommended oils meeting the dexos1
specification are all that is needed for
good performance and engine
protection.
Engine oil system flushes are not
recommended and could cause engine
damage not covered by the vehicle
warranty.
What to Do with Used Oil
Used engine oil contains certain
elements that can be unhealthy for
your skin and could even cause
cancer. Do not let used oil stay on
your skin for very long. Clean your
skin and nails with soap and water, or a good hand cleaner. Wash or
properly dispose of clothing or rags
containing used engine oil. See the
manufacturer's warnings about the
use and disposal of oil products.
Used oil can be a threat to the
environment. If you change your own
oil, be sure to drain all the oil from
the filter before disposal. Never
dispose of oil by putting it in the trash
or pouring it on the ground, into
sewers, or into streams or bodies of
water. Recycle it by taking it to a place
that collects used oil.
Engine Oil Life System
When to Change Engine Oil
This vehicle has a computer system
that indicates when to change the
engine oil and filter. This is based on a
combination of factors which include
engine revolutions, engine
temperature, and miles driven. Based
on driving conditions, the mileage at
which an oil change is indicated can
vary considerably. For the oil life
system to work properly, the system
must be reset every time the oil is
changed.

.Gives boiling protection up to
129 °C (265 °F), engine
temperature.
. Protects against rust and
corrosion.
. Will not damage aluminum parts.
. Helps keep the proper engine
temperature.
Caution
If improper coolant mixture,
inhibitors, or additives are used in
the vehicle cooling system, the
engine could overheat and be
damaged. Too much water in the
mixture can freeze and crack engine
cooling parts. The repairs would not
be covered by the vehicle warranty.
Use only the proper mixture of
engine coolant for the cooling
system. See Recommended Fluids
and Lubricants 0314.
Never dispose of engine coolant by
putting it in the trash, pouring it on
the ground, or into sewers, streams,
or bodies of water. Have the coolant changed by an authorized service
center, familiar with legal
requirements regarding used coolant
disposal. This will help protect the
environment and your health.
Checking Coolant
The vehicle must be on a level surface
when checking the coolant level.
It is normal to see coolant moving in
the upper coolant hose return line
when the engine is running. It is also
normal to see bubbles entering the
surge tank through the small hose.
Check to see if coolant is visible in the
coolant surge tank. If the coolant
inside the coolant surge tank is
boiling, do not do anything else until
it cools down.
If coolant is visible but the coolant
level is not at or above the COLD FILL
line, add a 50/50 mixture of clean
drinkable water and DEX-COOL
coolant.
Be sure the cooling system is cool
before this is done.
It is normal for the coolant level in
the bottom chamber to rise and fall
with operating temperature and
ambient conditions. Coolant will
evaporate from the bottom chamber
in normal operation. This will happen
faster when the vehicle is driven for
long periods in hot, dry conditions.
If no coolant is visible in the coolant
surge tank, add coolant as follows:
How to Add Coolant to the
Coolant Surge Tank
Caution
This vehicle has a specific coolant
fill procedure. Failure to follow this
procedure could cause the engine to
overheat and be severely damaged.
If no problem is found, check to see if
coolant is visible in the coolant surge
tank. If coolant is visible but the
coolant level is not at the bottom of
the fill neck, add a 50/50 mixture of
clean, drinkable water and DEX-COOL
coolant at the coolant surge tank, but
