Change Engine Oil
This message indicates that the life of the engine oil
has expired and it should be changed and that
your vehicle is due for service. See your GM dealer.
SeeEngine Oil on page 5-16andScheduled
Maintenance on page 6-4for more information.
When you reset the Change Engine Oil message by
clearing it from the display, you still must reset the
engine oil life system separately. For more information
on resetting the engine oil life system, seeEngine
Oil Life System on page 5-20. If you clear this message
from the display, it will not re-appear.
Change Trans (Transmission) Fluid
(Automatic Transmission)
This message indicates that the life of the transmission
uid has expired and it should be changed. See
Scheduled Maintenance on page 6-4and
Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 6-13for
the proper uid and change intervals.
When you reset the Change Trans Fluid message by
clearing it from the display, you still must reset the
transmission uid life monitor separately. For more
information on resetting the transmission uid life
monitor, seeAutomatic Transmission Fluid on
page 5-23.
Check Brake Fluid
This message will display if the ignition is in ON to
inform the driver that the brake uid level is low.
Have the brake system serviced by your GM dealer as
soon as possible. SeeBrake System Warning Light
on page 3-38andBrakes on page 5-38for more
information.
Check Coolant Level
Notice:If your engine catches re because you
keep driving with no coolant, your vehicle can
be badly damaged. The costly repairs would not be
covered by your warranty. SeeOverheated Engine
Protection Operating Mode on page 5-30for
information on driving to a safe place in an
emergency.
This message will appear when there is a low level of
engine coolant. Have the cooling system serviced
by your GM dealer as soon as possible. SeeEngine
Coolant on page 5-26for more information.
Check Gas Cap
When this message appears on the display, the gas cap
has not been fully tightened. You should recheck the
gas cap to ensure that it is on and tightened properly.
See “If the Light Is On Steady” underMalfunction
Indicator Lamp on page 3-41for more information.

Check Tire Pressure
If your vehicle has a Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM)
system, this message indicates that one or more of the
vehicle’s tires are low. SeeStatus of Vehicle Systems
on page 3-54for information on checking your vehicle’s
tire pressures. Also, seeTire Pressure Monitor
System on page 5-68andInation - Tire Pressure on
page 5-65for more information.
Check Washer Fluid
When this message appears on the display, it means
that your vehicle is low on windshield washer uid. You
should rell the windshield washer uid reservoir as
soon as possible. SeeWindshield Washer Fluid
on page 5-37for more information.
Competitive Driving (CTS-V)
When competitive driving mode is turned on with the
TC (traction control) button, this message will be
displayed on the DIC. The TC light will be on when the
competitive driving mode is on. The traction control
system will not operate while in competitive driving
mode. You should adjust your driving accordingly. See
the CTS-V portion ofTraction Control System (TCS)
(CTS) on page 4-9orTraction Control System (TCS)
(CTS-V) on page 4-10for more information.
Driver Door Ajar
When this message appears on the display, it means
that the driver’s door was not closed completely.
You should make sure that the driver’s door is
closed completely.
Engine Coolant Hot – AC
(Air Conditioning) Off
This message displays when the engine coolant
becomes hotter than the normal operating temperature.
To avoid added strain on a hot engine, the air
conditioning compressor is automatically turned off.
When the coolant temperature returns to normal, the air
conditioning compressor will turn back on. You can
continue to drive your vehicle.
If this message continues to appear, have the system
repaired by your GM dealer as soon as possible to avoid
damage to the engine or transmission.

Starting Disabled – Remove Key
This message will appear when the vehicle
theft-deterrent system detects that an improper ignition
key is being used to try to start the vehicle. Check
the ignition key for damage. If it is damaged, it may need
to be replaced. If it is not damaged, remove the key
and try to start the vehicle again. If it still does not start,
try another ignition key or have your vehicle serviced
by your GM dealer.
Starting Disabled – Throttle Problem
This message appears when your vehicle’s throttle
system is not functioning properly. Have your vehicle
serviced by your GM dealer.
Theft Attempted
This message is displayed if the content theft-deterrent
system has detected a break-in attempt while you
were away from your vehicle.
Top Speed – Fuel Cut Off
This message will appear when the Engine Control
Module (ECM) detects that the maximum speed for your
vehicle has been reached. Your vehicle’s top speed is
based on the top speed rating of the tires. This ensures
that your vehicle stays in a safe operating range for
the tires.
Traction Engaged
This message will appear when the traction control
system is actively limiting wheel spin. Slippery road
conditions may exist if this message is displayed, so
adjust your driving accordingly. The message will stay on
for a few seconds after the traction control system stops
limiting wheel spin. SeeTraction Control System (TCS)

Trans (Transmission) Hot – Idle Engine
This message indicates that the transmission uid in
your vehicle is too hot. Stop the vehicle and allow it to
idle until the transmission cools down or until this
message is removed. See alsoTransmission Fluid Hot
Message on page 3-50for more information.
Trunk Open
When this message appears on the display, it means
that the trunk lid of your vehicle was not closed
completely. You should make sure that the trunk lid is
closed completely.
Turn Signal On
If you drive your vehicle for more than about 1 mile
(1.6 km) with a turn signal on, this message will appear
as a reminder to turn off the turn signal. A multiple
chime will sound when this message is displayed.

Automatic Transmission Fluid
It is not necessary to check the transmission uid level.
A transmission uid leak is the only reason for uid
loss. If a leak occurs, take your vehicle to your
GM dealer service department and have it repaired as
soon as possible.
Change the uid and lter at the intervals listed in
Additional Required Services on page 6-6, and be sure
to use the transmission uid listed inRecommended
Fluids and Lubricants on page 6-13.
Notice:Use of the incorrect automatic transmission
uid may damage your vehicle, and the damages
may not be covered by your warranty. Always
use the automatic transmission uid listed in
Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 6-13.
How to Reset the Change Transmission
Fluid Message and the Transmission
Fluid Indicator
After the transmission uid has been changed, the
Change Trans Fluid message and the transmission
uid life indicator must be reset. To reset the message
and indicator, use one of the following procedures:
Base Audio System
Press the CLR (Clear) button located to the right of
the DIC display to acknowledge the CHANGE TRANS
FLUID message. This will clear the message from
the display and reset it.
To reset the transmission uid life indicator, use the
following steps:
1. Press the up or down arrow on the INFO button
located to the right of the DIC display to access
the DIC menu.
2. Once the XXX% TRANS FLUID LIFE menu item
is highlighted, press and hold the CLR button.
The percentage will return to 100, and the
transmission uid life indicator will be reset.
3. Repeat the steps if the percentage does not
return to 100.
Navigation System
If your vehicle has a navigation system, see your
navigation system supplement for instructions on how
to acknowledge the Change Trans Fluid message
and reset the transmission uid life indicator.

Manual Transmission Fluid
When to Check Manual
Transmission Fluid
It is not necessary to check the manual transmission
uid level. A transmission uid leak is the only reason
for uid loss. If a leak occurs, take the vehicle to
your GM dealer service department and have it
repaired as soon as possible.
How to Check Manual
Transmission Fluid
Because this operation can be difficult, you may choose
to have this done at your GM dealer service department.
If you do it yourself, be sure to follow all the instructions
here, or you could get a false reading.
Notice:Too much or too little uid can damage
your transmission. Too much can mean that some
of the uid could come out and fall on hot engine
parts or exhaust system parts, starting a re.
Too little uid could cause the transmission to
overheat. Be sure to get an accurate reading
if you check your transmission uid.Check the uid level only when your engine is off, the
vehicle is parked on a level place and the transmission
is cool enough for you to rest your ngers on the
transmission case.
To check the uid level, do the following:
1. Remove the ller plug.
2. Check that the lubricant level is up to the bottom of
the ller plug hole.
3. If the uid level is good and your vehicle is a CTS,
replace the gasket and reinstall the ller plug. If the
uid level is good and your vehicle is a CTS-V,
apply LOCTITE
®#516 or equivalent sealant to the
threads and then reinstall the ller plug.
With either vehicle, be sure the plug is fully seated.
If the uid level is low, add more uid as described
in the next steps.

How to Add Manual Transmission Fluid
Here is how to add uid. SeeRecommended Fluids
and Lubricants on page 6-13to determine which type of
uid to use.
1. Remove the ller plug.
2. Add uid at the ller plug hole. Add only enough
uid to bring the uid level up to the bottom of the
ller plug hole.
3. If your vehicle is a CTS, replace the gasket and
reinstall the ller plug. If your vehicle is a CTS-V,
apply LOCTITE
®#516 or equivalent sealant to
the threads and then reinstall the ller plug.
Again, with either vehicle, be sure the plug is
fully seated.
Hydraulic Clutch
It is not necessary to regularly check clutch uid
unless you suspect there is a leak in the system.
Adding uid will not correct a leak.
A uid loss in this system could indicate a problem.
Have the system inspected and repaired.
When to Check and What to Use

Refer to the Maintenance Schedule to determine how
often you should check the uid level in your clutch
master cylinder reservoir and for the proper uid to use.

How to Check and Add Fluid
Make sure the uid level is at the MIN (Minimum)
line on the side of the reservoir. If it is not, remove
the cap and add the proper uid until the level reaches
the MIN line.

(h)Change automatic transmission uid and lter if the
vehicle is mainly driven under one or more of these
conditions:
In heavy city traffic where the outside temperature
regularly reaches 90°F (32°C) or higher.
In hilly or mountainous terrain.
When doing frequent trailer towing.
Uses such as high performance operation.
If you do not use your vehicle under any of these
conditions, the uid and lter do not require changing.
(i)Drain, ush, and rell cooling system. This service
can be complex; you should have your dealer perform
this service. See Engine Coolant on page 5-26 for
what to use. Inspect hoses. Clean radiator, condenser,
pressure cap, and ller neck. Pressure test the
cooling system and pressure cap.
(k)A uid loss in any vehicle system could indicate
a problem. Have the system inspected and repaired and
the uid level checked. Add uid if needed.
(l)Change uid if the vehicle is used for high
performance operation.(m)Change uid whenever the vehicle has been
driven for 3,000 miles (5 000 km) with the transmission
temperature at 290°F (143°C) or higher without using
an auxiliary uid cooler. See Message Center (CTS-V)
on page 3-47andTransmission Fluid Hot Message
on page 3-50.
(n)If you drive regularly under dusty conditions, inspect
the lter at each engine oil change.
(p)Visually inspect belt for fraying, excessive cracks,
or obvious damage. Replace belt if necessary.

dependability, and emission control performance of

Be sure any necessary repairs are completed at once.
Whenever any uids or lubricants are added to your
