Light”
in the Index.)
In many states and Canadian provinces,
the law says to wear safety belts.
Here’s why:
They work.
You never know if you’ll be in a crash. If you do have a crash, you don’t
know
if it will be a bad one.
A few crashes are mild, and some crashes can be so serious that even
buckled up a person wouldn’t survive. But
most crashes are in between. In
many
of them, people who buckle up can survive and sometimes walk away.
Without belts they could have been badly hurt or killed.
After more than
25 years of safety belts in vehicles, the facts are clear. In
most crashes buckling up does matter
... a lot!

When the key is turned to “RUN” or “START,” a light will come on for
about eight seconds
to remind people to fasten their safety belts. Unless the
driver’s safety belt is already buckled, a chime will
also sound.
How To Wear Safety Belts Properly
Adults
This part is only for people of adult size.
Be aware that there are special things to know about safety belts and
children. And there are different rules for smaller children and babies. If a
child will be riding in your vehicle, see the section after this one, called
“Children.” Follow those rules for everyone’s protection.
First,
you’ll want to know which restraint systems your vehicle has.
We’ll start with the driver position.

If your vehicle has a
endgate-mounted spare tire carrier, you
must move the carrier
arm out of the way to
open the glass.
You must move the
carrier arm out
of the
way
to open the
endgate glass. Here's
how
to move the arm:
1. Squeeze the release handle to free the carrier arm.
2. Swing the carrier arm away from the endgate. You may need to give it
a slight tug.
3. To latch the carrier arm, swing it toward the endgate. The latch has two
catches, so push on the carrier arm to make sure it has locked into the
second one. It shouldn't move.

Vehicle theft is big business, especially in some cities. Although your
vehicle has a number of theft deterrent features, we know that nothing we
put on
it can make it impossible to steal. However, there are ways you can
help.
Key in the Ignition
If you walk away from your vehicle with the keys inside, it’s an easy target
for joy riders or professional thieves
- so don’t do it.
When you park your vehicle and open the driver’s door, you’ll hear a tone
reminding you to remove your key from the ignition and take
it with you.
Always
do this. Your steering wheel will be locked, and so will your
ignition. If you have an automatic transmission, taking your key out
also
locks your transmission. And remember to lock the doors.
Parking at Night
Park in a lighted spot, close all windows and lock your vehicle. Remember
to keep your valuables out of sight. Put them
in a storage area, or take them
with you.
Parking Lots
If you park in a lot where someone will be watching your vehicle, it’s best
to lock
it up and take your keys. But what if you have to leave your ignition
key? What
if you have to leave something valuable in your vehicle?
0 Put your valuables in a storage area, like your glove box.
Lock the glove box.
Lock all the doors except the driver’s.
Then take the door key with you.

To Stop - Let up on the accelerator pedal and press the brake pedal.
Just before the vehicle stops, press
the clutch pedal and the brake pedal,
and shift to
“N” (Neutral).
N (Neutral) - Use this position when you start or idle your engine.
R (Reverse) - To back up, press down the clutch pedal, wait about 6
seconds, then shift into “R” (Reverse). Then let up on the clutch pedal
slowly while pressing the accelerator pedal.
NOTICE:
Shift to “R” (Reverse) only after your vehicle is stopped.
Shifting to
“R” (Reverse) while your vehicle is moving could
damage your transmission.
Also, use “R’ (Reverse), along with the parking brake, for parking your
vehicle.
Shift Light
If you have a manual
transmission,
you
have a SHIFT light.
This light will show
you when to shift to
the next higher gear
for best fuel economy.
When this light comes
on, you can shift to the next higher gear if weather,
road and traffic conditions
let you. For the best fuel economy, accelerate
slowly and shift when the light comes on.
While
you accelerate, it is normal for the light to go on and off if you
quickly change the position
of the accelerator. Ignore the SHIFT light when
you downshift.
Four-wheel Drive Vehicles Only: If your vehicle has four-wheel drive
and
is equipped with a manual transmission, disregard the shift light when
the transfer case is in
4 LOW.

If you have this feature, your rear axle can give you additional traction on
snow, mud, ice, sand or gravel. It works like a standard axle most of the
time, but when one of the rear wheels has no traction and the other does, the
locking feature will allow the wheel with traction
to move the vehicle.
Parking Brake
-
To Set the Parking Brake:
To Release the Parking Brake:
Hold the regular brake
pedal down
with your
right foot. Push down
the parking brake
pedal with your left
foot. If the ignition is
on, the brake system
warning light will
come
on.
Hold the regular brake
pedal down. Pull the
brake release lever.
I NOTICE: I
Driving with the parking brake on can cause your rear brakes to
overheat.
You may have to replace them, and you could also
damage other parts
of your vehicle.
