.Before starting the vehicle,unplug the cord, reattachthe cover to the plug, andsecurely fasten the cord.Keep the cord away fromany moving parts.
4. Before starting the engine, besure to unplug and store thecord as it was before to keep it
away from moving engineparts. If you do not, it could bedamaged.
The length of time the heater shouldremain plugged in depends onseveral factors. Ask a dealer in thearea where you will be parking thevehicle for the best advice on this.
Retained Accessory
Power (RAP)
The following vehicle accessoriescan be used for up to 10 minutesafter the engine is turned off:
.Audio System
.Power Windows
.OnStar System (if equipped)
These features work when the keyis in ON/RUN or ACC/ACCESSORY. Once the key isturned from ON/RUN to LOCK/OFF,the windows continue to work up to10 minutes or until any door isopened. The radio continues towork for up to 10 minutes or until thedriver door is opened.
Accessory Power Outlets (APOs)
The vehicle may have AccessoryPower Outlets (APOs) in severallocations. SeePower Outlets0107.
The APOs in the console or centerseat position are powered byRetained Accessory Power (RAP).They will continue to work for up to10 minutes after the key is turnedfrom ON/RUN to LOCK/OFF, or untilthe driver door is opened.
The APOs on the center stack comefrom the factory powered directlyfrom the vehicle battery, and supplyaccessory power at all times,regardless of ignition key position.
If electronic items are left pluggedinto these APOs for long periods oftime with the vehicle off, the vehiclebattery could be drained. Thevehicle may not start if the battery isallowed to drain for an extendedperiod of time.

electric brakes, start thecombination moving and then applythe trailer brake controller by handto be sure the brakes work.
During the trip, check occasionallyto be sure that the load is secureand the lamps and any trailerbrakes still work.
Following Distance
Stay at least twice as far behind thevehicle ahead as you would whendriving the vehicle without a trailer.This can help to avoid heavybraking and sudden turns.
Passing
More passing distance is neededwhen towing a trailer. Thecombination will not accelerate asquickly and is longer so it isnecessary to go much fartherbeyond the passed vehicle beforereturning to the lane.
Backing Up
Hold the bottom of the steeringwheel with one hand. To move thetrailer to the left, move that hand tothe left. To move the trailer to the
right, move your hand to the right.Always back up slowly and,if possible, have someoneguide you.
Making Turns
Caution
Making very sharp turns while
trailering could cause the trailer to
come in contact with the vehicle.
The vehicle could be damaged.
Avoid making very sharp turns
while trailering.
When turning with a trailer, makewider turns than normal. Do this sothe trailer will not strike softshoulders, curbs, road signs, trees,or other objects. Avoid jerky orsudden maneuvers. Signal well inadvance.
If the trailer turn signal bulbs burnout, the arrows on the instrumentcluster will still flash for turns. It isimportant to check occasionally tobe sure the trailer bulbs are stillworking.
Driving on Grades
Reduce speed and shift to a lowergearbeforestarting down a long orsteep downgrade. If thetransmission is not shifted down, thebrakes might get hot and no longerwork well.
Vehicles can tow in D (Drive). Shiftthe transmission to a lower gear ifthe transmission shifts too oftenunder heavy loads and/or hillyconditions.
The Tow/Haul Mode may be used ifthe transmission shifts too often.SeeTo w / H a u l M o d e0245.
When towing at high altitude onsteep uphill grades, consider thefollowing: Engine coolant will boil atalowertemperaturethanatnormalaltitudes. If the engine is turned offimmediately after towing at highaltitude on steep uphill grades, thevehicle may show signs similar toengine overheating. To avoid this,let the engine run while parked,preferably on level ground, with thetransmission in P (Park) for a few

manufacturer or by the trailermanufacturer. Always leave justenough slack so the combinationcan turn. Never allow safety chainsto drag on the ground.
Trailer Brakes
Aloadedtrailerthatweighsmorethan 900 kg (2,000 lb) needs to haveits own brake system that isadequate for the weight of thetrailer. Be sure to read and followthe instructions for the trailer brakesso they are installed, adjusted, andmaintained properly.
Trailer Wiring Harness
For vehicles not equipped withheavy-duty trailering, a harness issecured underneath the left side ofthe vehicle, next to the spare tire.The harness requires the installationof a trailer connector, which isavailable through your dealer. Theseven-wire harness contains thefollowing trailer circuits:
.Ye l l o w : L e f t s t o p / t u r n s i g n a l
.Green: Right stop/turn signal
.Brown: Taillamps/parking lamps
.Black: Ground
.Gray: Back-up lamps
.Orange: Battery feed
.Blue: Trailer brake
To h e l p c h a r g e a r e m o t e(non-vehicle) battery, press the Tow/Haul Mode button on the centerstack. If the trailer is too light forTo w / H a u l M o d e , t u r n o n t h eheadlamps to help charge thebattery.
Trailer Brake Control Wiring
Harness
Afour-wireharness,withoutconnector, is secured behind the leftside kick panel. The harnesscontains the following circuits:
.Red/Green: Battery feed
.Black: Ground
.White/Blue: Brake signal tocontroller
.Blue: Trailer Brake power totrailer connector
To r e m o v e t h e l e f t s i d e k i c k p a n e l ,start at the front of the panel pullingtoward the rear of the vehicle and liftupward to disengage the integralclips.

3. Fill the coolant surge tank withthe proper mixture to the markpointed to on the front of thecoolant surge tank.
4. With the coolant surge tankcap off, start the engine and letit run until the upper radiatorhose starts getting hot. Watchout for the engine cooling fan.By this time, the coolant levelinside the coolant surge tankmay be lower. If the level islower, add more of the propermixture to the coolant surgetank until the level reaches themark pointed to on the front ofthe coolant surge tank.
5. Replace the cap tightly.
Caution
If the pressure cap is not tightly
installed, coolant loss and
possible engine damage may
occur. Be sure the cap is properly
and tightly secured.
Engine Overheating
The vehicle has an engine coolanttemperature gauge on theinstrument cluster to warn of engineoverheating. SeeEngine CoolantTe m p e r a t u r e G a u g e011 5.
Caution
Running the engine without
coolant may cause damage or a
fire. Vehicle damage would not be
covered by the vehicle warranty.
If the decision is made not to lift thehood when this warning appears,get service help right away. SeeRoadside AssistanceProgram0387.
If the decision is made to lift thehood, make sure the vehicle isparked on a level surface.
Then check to see if the enginecooling fan is running. If the engineis overheating, the fan should berunning. If it is not, do not continueto run the engine and have thevehicle serviced.
If Steam Is Coming from the
Engine Compartment
{Warning
Steam from an overheated engine
can burn you badly, even if you
just open the hood. Stay away
from the engine if you see or hear
steam coming from it. Just turn it
off and get everyone away from
the vehicle until it cools down.

the device if it is contacting the
vehicle, and do not spin the
vehicle's wheels.
If you do find traction devices that
will fit, install them on the rear
tires.
Caution
If the vehicle has a tire size other
than 255/65R17 AT, 265/60R18,
265/65R17 or 265/70R16, use tire
chains only where legal and only
when you must. Use chains that
are the proper size for the tires.
Install them on the tires of the
rear axle. Do not use chains on
the tires of the front axle. Tighten
them as tightly as possible with
the ends securely fastened. Drive
slowly and follow the chain
manufacturer's instructions. If you
can hear the chains contacting

the vehicle, stop and retighten
them. If the contact continues,
slow down until it stops. Driving
too fast or spinning the wheels
with chains on will damage the
vehicle.
If a Tire Goes Flat
It is unusual for a tire to blowoutwhile driving, especially if the tiresare maintained properly. If air goesout of a tire, it is much more likely toleak out slowly. But if there ever is ablowout, here are a few tips aboutwhat to expect and what to do:
If a front tire fails, the flat tirecreates a drag that pulls the vehicletoward that side. Take your foot offthe accelerator pedal and grip thesteering wheel firmly. Steer tomaintain lane position, and thengently brake to a stop, well off theroad, if possible.
Arearblowout,particularlyonacurve, acts much like a skid andmay require the same correction asused in a skid. Stop pressing theaccelerator pedal and steer tostraighten the vehicle. It may bevery bumpy and noisy. Gently braketo a stop, well off the road,if possible.

Driving on a flat tire will cause
permanent damage to the tire.
Re-inflating a tire after it has been
driven on while severely
underinflated or flat may cause a
blowout and a serious crash.
Never attempt to re-inflate a tire
that has been driven on while
severely underinflated or flat.
Have your dealer or an authorized
tire service center repair or
replace the flat tire as soon as
possible.

3. Use the wheel wrench and turnit counterclockwise to loosenthe wheel nuts. Do not removethe wheel nuts yet.
Front Position
4. Position the jack under thevehicle, as shown. If the flattire is on the front of thevehicle, position the jack on thedepression in the vehicle'sframe, behind the flat tire.
Rear Position
5. If the flat tire is on the rear,position the jack under the rearaxle about 5 cm (2 in) inboardof the shock absorber bracket.
Make sure that the jack head ispositioned so that the rear axleis resting securely between thegrooves that are on thejack head.

2. Pull the cable and springthrough the center of thewheel. Tilt the wheel retainerplate down and through thecenter of the wheel.
Make sure the retainer is fullyseated across the underside ofthe wheel.
3. Attach the wheel wrench (7)and extensions (6) together, asshown.
4. Insert the hoist end (10)through the hole (9) in the rearbumper and onto the hoistshaft.
Do not use the chiseled end ofthe wheel wrench.
5. Raise the tire part way upward.Make sure the retainer isseated in the wheel opening.
6. Raise the tire fully against theunderside of the vehicle byturning the wheel wrenchclockwise until you hear twoclicks or feel it skip twice. Youcannot overtighten the cable.
7. Make sure the tire is storedsecurely and flush in theradius (2) of the spare tiresupport bracket (1). Push, pull,

and then try to turn the tire.If the tire moves, use the wheelwrench to tighten the cable.
8. Reinstall the spare tire lock,if the vehicle has one.

For extended cab models, be sureto replace the wheel wrench (1),jack handle (2), and two jack handleextensions (3) in the bag, as shown,so it can be properly stored in thestorage compartment.
Be sure to fully tighten the wingnut (4) so the tool bag cover can beproperly and securely closed.
Compact Spare Tire
{Warning
Driving with more than one
compact spare tire at a time could
result in loss of braking and
handling. This could lead to a
crash and you or others could be
injured. Use only one compact
spare tire at a time.
If this vehicle has a compact sparetire, it was fully inflated when new;however, it can lose air over time.Check the inflation pressureregularly. It should be 420 kPa(60 psi).
Stop as soon as possible and checkthat the spare tire is correctlyinflated after being installed on thevehicle. The compact spare tire isdesigned for temporary use only.The vehicle will perform differentlywith the spare tire installed and it is
recommended that the vehiclespeed be limited to 80 km/h(50 mph). To conserve the tread ofthe spare tire, have the standard tirerepaired or replaced as soon asconvenient and return the spare tireto the storage area.
When using a compact spare tire,the AWD (if equipped), ABS, andTraction Control systems mayengage until the spare tire isrecognized by the vehicle,especially on slippery roads. Adjustdriving to reduce possiblewheel slip.
Caution
When the compact spare is
installed, do not take the vehicle
through an automatic car wash
with guide rails. The compact
spare can get caught on the rails
which can damage the tire, wheel,
and other parts of the vehicle.
Do not use the compact spare onother vehicles.

Jumper Cable Removal
Reverse the sequence exactly whenremoving the jumper cables.
After starting the disabled vehicleand removing the jumper cables,allow it to idle for several minutes.
Towing the Vehicle
Caution
Incorrectly towing a disabled
vehicle may cause damage. The
damage would not be covered by
the vehicle warranty.
Do not lash or hook to
suspension components. Use the
proper straps around the tires to
secure the vehicle.
Use only a flatbed tow truck fortowing a disabled vehicle. Neveruse a sling type lift or damage willoccur. Use ramps to help reduceapproach angles if necessary.Atowedvehicleshouldhaveitsdrive wheels off the ground.
Consult a professional towingservice if the disabled vehicle mustbe towed.
Recreational Vehicle
Towing
Recreational vehicle towing meanstowing the vehicle behind anothervehicle, such as a motor home. Thetwo most common types ofrecreational vehicle towing aredinghy and dolly towing. Dinghytowing is towing the vehicle with allfour wheels on the ground. Dollytowing is towing the vehicle with twowheels on the ground and twowheels on a dolly.
Follow the tow vehiclemanufacturer’sinstructions.Seeyour dealer or trailering professionalfor additional advice and equipmentrecommendations.
