Manual Transmission
The shift lever should be in Neutraland the parking brake engaged.Hold the clutch pedal down to thefloor and start the engine. Thevehicle will not start if the clutchpedal is not all the way down.
Starting Procedure
1. With your foot off theaccelerator pedal, turn theignition key to START. Whenthe engine starts, let go of thekey. The idle speed will godown as the engine gets warm.Do not race the engineimmediately after starting it.Operate the engine andtransmission gently to allow theoil to warm up and lubricate allmoving parts.

the cranking motor, and drain the
battery. Wait at least 15 seconds
between each try, to let the
cranking motor cool down.
2. If the engine does not startafter five to 10 seconds,especially in very cold weather(below✓18 °C or 0 °F), it couldbe flooded with too muchgasoline. Try pushing theaccelerator pedal all the way tothe floor and holding it therewhile holding the key in STARTfor up to 15 seconds. Wait atleast 15 seconds between eachtry, to allow the cranking motorto cool down. When the enginestarts, let go of the key andaccelerator. If the vehicle startsbriefly but then stops again, dothe same thing. This clears theextra gasoline from the engine.Do not race the engineimmediately after starting it.Operate the engine and
transmission gently until the oilwarms up and lubricates allmoving parts.
Engine Heater
If the vehicle has a diesel engine,see the Duramax dieselsupplement.

area away from buildings or

If equipped, the engine heater canprovide easier starting and betterfuel economy during enginewarm-up in cold weather conditionsat or below✓18 °C (0 °F). Vehicleswith an engine heater should beplugged in at least four hours beforestarting. An internal thermostat inthe plug-end of the cord may exist,

Torque Lock
If you are parking on a hill and youdo not shift the transmission intoP(Park) properly, the weight of thevehicle may put too much force onthe parking pawl in thetransmission. You may find it difficultto pull the shift lever out of P (Park).This is called torque lock. Toprevent torque lock, set the parkingbrake and then shift into P (Park)properly before you leave the driverseat. To find out how, seeShiftingInto Park0238.
When you are ready to drive, movethe shift lever out of P (Park) beforeyou release the parking brake.
If torque lock does occur, you mayneed to have another vehicle pushyours a little uphill to take some ofthe pressure from the parking pawlin the transmission. You will then beable to pull the shift lever out ofP(Park).
Shifting out of Park
This vehicle is equipped with anelectronic shift lock release system.The shift lock release isdesigned to:
.Prevent ignition key removalunless the shift lever is inP(Park).
.Prevent movement of the shiftlever out of P (Park), unless theignition is in ON/RUN and theregular brake pedal is applied.
To s h i f t o u t o f P ( P a r k ) :
1. Apply the brake pedal.
2. Press the button on the shiftlever.
3. Move the shift lever to thedesired position.
If you still are unable to shift out ofP(Park):
1. Ease the pressure on the shiftlever.
2. While holding down the brakepedal and pressing the shiftlever button, move the shiftlever all the way into P (Park).
3. While holding the shift leverbutton, move the shift lever tothe desired position.
If you are still having a problemshifting, then have the vehicleserviced soon.
This vehicle may have the SafetyBelt Assurance System, which mayprevent the vehicle from shifting outof P (Park). SeeSafety BeltMessages0136.
Parking
If the vehicle has a manualtransmission, before you get out ofthe vehicle, move the shift lever intoR(Reverse), and firmly apply theparking brake. Once the shift leverhas been placed into R (Reverse)with the clutch pedal pressed in,turn the ignition key to LOCK/OFF,remove the key and release theclutch.

To o p e r a t e t h e m a n u a l t r a n s m i s s i o n :
1(First) :Press the clutch pedalfully to the pedal stop and shift into1(First). Then, slowly let up on theclutch pedal as you slowly pressdown on the accelerator pedal.
Yo u c a n s h i f t i n t o 1 ( F i r s t ) w h e n y o uare going less than 30 km/h(20 mph). If you have come to acomplete stop and it is hard to shiftinto 1 (First), put the shift lever inNeutral and let up on the clutch.Then press the clutch pedal backdown and shift into 1 (First).
2(Second) :Press the clutch pedalfully to the pedal stop while lettingup on the accelerator pedal and
shift into 2 (Second). Then, slowlylet up on the clutch pedal as youpress the accelerator pedal.
3(Third), 4(Fourth), 5(Fifth) and6(Sixth) :Shift into 3 (Third),4(Fourth), 5(Fifth) and 6(Sixth) thesame way you do for 2 (Second).Slowly let up on the clutch pedal asyou press the accelerator pedal.
To s t o p , l e t u p o n t h e a c c e l e r a t o rpedal and press the brake pedal.Just before the vehicle stops, pressthe clutch pedal and the brakepedal, and shift to Neutral.
Neutral :Use this position whenyou start or idle the engine.
R(Reverse) :To b a c k u p , w i t h t h evehicle at a complete stop, pressthe clutch pedal. Press down onshift lever in the 3–4Neutralposition, then shift into R (Reverse).If it is hard to shift, let the shift leverreturn to the 3–4Neutralpositionand release the clutch pedal. Thenfollow the steps again to shift intoR(Reverse). Slowly let up on theclutch pedal as you press theaccelerator pedal.

Cruise Control
With cruise control a speed of about40 km/h (25 mph) or more can bemaintained without keeping yourfoot on the accelerator. Cruisecontrol does not work at speedsbelow about 40 km/h (25 mph).

Cruise control can be dangerous
where you cannot drive safely at
asteadyspeed.Donotuse
cruise control on winding roads or
in heavy traffic.
Cruise control can be dangerous
on slippery roads. On such roads,
fast changes in tire traction can
cause excessive wheel slip, and
you could lose control. Do not use
cruise control on slippery roads.
If equipped with a manualtransmission, the cruise control willremain active when the gears areshifted. The cruise is deactivated ifthe clutch is pressed for severalseconds. If the cruise control is
being used and the Traction Control(TCS) system or StabiliTrak beginsto limit wheel spin, the cruise controlwill automatically disengage. SeeTr a c t i o n C o n t r o l / E l e c t r o n i c S t a b i l i t yControl0256.Ifacollisionalertoccurs when cruise control isactivated, cruise control isdisengaged. SeeForward CollisionAlert (FCA) System0263.Whenroad conditions allow you to safelyuse it again, cruise control can beturned back on.
If the brakes are applied, the cruisecontrol disengages.
5:Press to turn the system on oroff. A white indicator comes on inthe instrument cluster when cruisecontrol is turned on.
+RES :If there is a set speed inmemory, press briefly to resume tothat speed or press and hold toaccelerate. If cruise control isalready active, use to increasevehicle speed.
SET✓:Press briefly to set thespeed and activate cruise control.If cruise control is already active,use to decrease vehicle speed.
*:Press to disengage cruisecontrol without erasing the setspeed from memory.
Setting Cruise Control
If5is on when not in use, SET✓or
+RES could get pressed and go into
cruise when not desired. Keep5
off when cruise is not being used.
1. Press5to turn the cruise
system on.
2. Get up to the desired speed.
3. Press and release SET✓.

bumper, or under the vehicle.

drive or park the vehicle using
only these camera(s). Always
check behind and around the
vehicle before driving. Failure to
use proper care may result in
injury, death, or vehicle damage.
If equipped, the RVC system isdesigned to help the driver whenbacking up by displaying a view ofthe area behind the vehicle. Whenthe key is in ON/RUN and the driver
shifts the vehicle into R (Reverse),the video image automaticallyappears on the infotainment screen.The infotainment screen goes to theprevious screen after approximatelyfour seconds once the vehicle isshifted out of R (Reverse).
To s e e t h e p r e v i o u s s c r e e n s o o n e r,do one of the following:
.Press a hard key on theinfotainment system.
.Shift into P (Park).
The RVC will not work properly ifthe tailgate is down. If the tailgate isdown, do not use this system.
Guidelines
The RVC system may have aguideline overlay that can help thedriver align the vehicle whenbacking into a parking spot.

How to Check Automatic
Transmission Fluid
It is not necessary to check thetransmission fluid level.Atransmissionfluidleakistheonlyreason for fluid loss. If a leakoccurs, take the vehicle to yourdealer and have it repaired as soonas possible.
There is a special procedure forchecking and changing thetransmission fluid. Because thisprocedure is difficult, this should bedone at your dealer. Contact yourdealer for additional information orthe procedure can be found in theservice manual. To purchase aservice manual, seeServicePublications OrderingInformation0392.
Change the fluid and filter at theintervals listed inMaintenanceSchedule0366,andbesuretousethe fluid listed inRecommendedFluids and Lubricants0375.

How to Check Manual
Transmission Fluid

Hydraulic Clutch
For vehicles with a manualtransmission, it is not necessary toregularly check brake/clutch fluidunless there is a leak suspected.Adding fluid will not correct a leak.Afluidlossinthissystemcouldindicate a problem. Have thesystem inspected and repaired.
When to Check and What
to Use
The brake/hydraulic clutch fluidreservoir cap has this symbol on it.The common brake/clutch fluidreservoir is filled with DOT 3 brakefluid as indicated on the reservoircap. SeeEngine CompartmentOverview0283for reservoirlocation.
How to Check and Add Fluid
Visually check the brake/clutch fluidreservoir to make sure the fluid levelis at the MIN (minimum) line on thefront of the reservoir. The brake/hydraulic clutch fluid system shouldbe closed and sealed.

Wait until there is no sign of
steam or coolant before you open
the hood.
If you keep driving when the
engine is overheated, the liquids
in it can catch fire. You or others
could be badly burned. Stop the
engine if it overheats, and get out
of the vehicle until the engine
is cool.
If No Steam Is Coming from
the Engine Compartment
If an engine overheat warning isdisplayed but no steam can be seenor heard, the problem may not betoo serious. Sometimes the enginecan get a little too hot when thevehicle:
.Climbs a long hill on a hot day.
.Stops after high-speed driving.
.Idles for long periods in traffic.
If the overheat warning is displayedwith no sign of steam:
1. Turn the air conditioning off.
2. Turn the heater on to thehighest temperature and to thehighest fan speed. Open thewindows as necessary.
3. When it is safe to do so, pull offthe road, shift to P (Park) orN(Neutral),andlettheengine idle.
If the engine coolant temperaturegauge is no longer in the overheatzone, the vehicle can be driven.Continue to drive the vehicle slowlyfor about 10 minutes. Keep a safedistance from the vehicle in front.If the warning does not come backon, continue to drive normally andhave the cooling system checkedfor proper fill and function.
If the warning continues, pull over,stop, and park the vehicleright away.
If there is no sign of steam, idle theengine for three minutes whileparked. If the warning is stilldisplayed, turn off the engine until itcools down.
Engine Fan
If the vehicle has a clutched enginecooling fan, when the clutch isengaged, the fan spins faster toprovide more air to cool the engine.In most everyday driving conditions,the fan is spinning slower and theclutch is not fully engaged. Thisimproves fuel economy and reducesfan noise. Under heavy vehicleloading, trailer towing, and/or highoutside temperatures, the fan speedincreases as the clutch more fullyengages, so an increase in fannoise may be heard. This is normaland should not be mistaken as thetransmission slipping or makingextra shifts. It is merely the coolingsystem functioning properly. The fanwill slow down when additionalcooling is not required and theclutch disengages.
This fan noise may also be heardwhen starting the engine. It will goaway as the fan clutch partiallydisengages.
If the vehicle has electric coolingfan(s), the fans may be heardspinning at low speed during most
