To Check Engine Oil:
Pull out the dipstick and clean it with a
paper towel or a cloth, then push it back
in all the way. Remove it again, Beeping

add some oil.. But you
must use the right kind. This section

canes on and stays on if your oil. is '/z to
1% quarts low (see t-he Index tilid&
Low Oil Ljght). Do not wait until this
light comes on to check your oil level.
This light is an added reminder
only-you should check your oil level
regularly.

What Kind of Oil To Use
'Lo& fcrr Three Things:
GM4718M
Your Corvette engine requires a
special. oil me,et&g GM Standard
GM4718M. Oils meeting this
Standard may be identified as
synthetic,
and should also. be
identified as API Service SG.
However, not all SynthetkAPI
Service SG oils will meet this GM
Standard. You should lo& for and
use only an .oil that meets GM
Stand;ird GM4718M.

A good time to check your automatic
transmission fluid level is when the
engine oil is changed. Refer to the
Mairitenance Schedule-to determine.

To Check Trafisinission Fluid Cold:.
A cold check is made after the-vehicle
has been sitting for eight hours-or miore
with. the engine offand is used only as :a
feference. Let the,engine run at idle for
five minutes if &utside temper&n%:_s are
50QF (10%) or-mare. If it's colder than
5QoF [lUaC), you may have-to idle the

To Check the Fluid Hot or Cold
Park your vehicle- on: a- level place.

fluiil to use. See the Index under Fluids.
G Lubricants.
If the fluid level is low, add only enough
of the proper fluid to bring. the level up
to the COLD area.for a cold-check or
the-HQT
area for a-.hot ‘check. It
doesn’t take much fluid, generally legs
than a pint. Don’t overfill. We
recommend
you use only fluid IabeIed
DEXRON@-JIE, because fluids with that
label are made especially
for your
automatic transmission.. Damage caused
by fluid other than DEXXO-Nq-IIE is not
covtir,ed by your-new vehicle warranty.
After adding fluid, recheck the fluid
level as described under How to Check.
When the correct fluid level is obtained,
push
the dipstick back in all the way.
Manual Transmission Fluid
When to Check
A good time to have it checked is when
the
engine oil is changed. Howevw, tbe
fluid in your-manual transmission
doesn’t require-changing.
How to Check:
Becguse this operation can be a iittie
difficult,
you may choose to-have this
done at a Chevrolet dealership Service
Department.
If you do it y.Ourself, be sure to follow
all the instrvctiuns here, or you could
get a false reading.

Check the fluid level only when your
engine is
off, the vehicle is parked on a
level place and the transmission is cool
enough for you to rest your fingers on
the transmission case.
Then, Follow These Steps:
1. Remove the filler plug.
2. Check that the lubricant level is up to
the bottom .df the filler plug hale.
3. If the fluid level is good, install the
plug and be sure it is fully seated. If I
the fluid level is low, add more fluid
as described in the next step.

How to Add Fluid:
When you need to add fluid, put in
enough to, bring the level up to -the
bottom of the filler plug hole in the
transmission case. Refer to the
Maintenance Schedule to determine
what
kind of fluid. to use. See the Index
under Fluids G Lubricants.

The clutch linkage in your vehicle is
self-adjusting.
When to Check and What to Use:
Refer to the Maintenance Scheduleb bo
determine how often you should check
the fluid level in your clutch master
cylinder reservoir
and what to add. See
the Index under Owner Checks G.

HOW to Check and Add Fluid
The clutch master cylinder is under
the Engine Control Module (ECM) in
the left rear area of the engine
compartment.
To check the fluid, look at the area
between the
ECM and the battery.

Loosen the two nuts-on the ECM unit.
With the
LT1 engine, there is one nut
on the outboard side
o€ the ECM unit
-and
one nut on the inboard side. With
the
LT5 engine, both nuts are on the
inboard side
of the ECM unit.
Move the unit to either side. Do not
disconnect
any wires.
Fluid should be added if the fluid level
iS at
or below the ADD mark on the
reservoir. There are additional.
instructions on the
reservoir cap.
When returning the
ECM to its proper
pasition, make
sure the bolts are
aligned with the: slotsin
the bracket.
Then gently push
down on the unit.
When.replacing
the unit, be careful not
to overtighten the nuts.
Rear Axle
When to Check Lubricant:
Refm to the Maintenance Schedule to
determine how often to check the
lubricant. See the
Index under Periodic
Maintenance Inspections.
How to Check Lubricant:
If the-levelis below the bottom 0.f the
filler
plug hole, you'll need to add some
lubricant, Add enough lubricant to raise
the level to the bottom of the filler plug-
hole.

Adding Coolant-LTI Engine
Tb Check Coolant:
Wh& your engine is cold, :che.ck the
dipstick on the cap of the coolant-
recovery .tank. The. coolant level should
be at C.OLD, orst little higher. When
your engine-is wm, the level on the
dips’tiik should be up to HOT, or a
little higher. If your engine is
overheating, see the Index under
Engine Overheating.

the coolant high fill resekvoir will be
lower.
Add more of the proper mix
through the filler neck until the level
reaches the
base of the filler .neck.
8. Replace the pressure cap. When it's
tight, the arrows on the cap should
line up
with the overflow tube on the
reservoir filler neck. Shut the engine
Off.
9. Then fill the coolant .recovery t,mk to
the proper level.

contact your Chevrolet dealer
or the
procedure
may be found in a Chevrolet
Corvette Service Manual. To purchase a

Adding GooCant-LT5 hgine
To Check Coolant:
When your engine is cold, check the-
dipstick on the cap of the coolant
recovery
tanfr. The coolant level should
be at COLD or a little higher. When
your engine is warm, the level on the
dipstick
should be up to HDT, or a
little higher. If your engine is
overheating, see the
Index under
Evlgirze Overheating.
Your Corvette also has a coolant high
fill reservoir located at the right rear of
the engine'compartrnent.
To Add Coolant:
For more .information on ,adding coolant
to the LT5 engine, see the Index u.nder
Engine Overheating.
If you need more coolant, add the
proper mix at the coolant recovery
tank, but ,only when your engine is cool.
If the tank isvery low or empty, also
add coolant to the coolant high fill
reservoir.
Add coolant to the base of the filler
neck, if needed.
