Securing a Child Restraint in the
Passenger Seat Position
Your vehicle has a passenger air bag. There's an air
bag off switch in the glove box you can use to turn
off the passenger's air bag when you want to secure a
rear-facing child restraint at the passenger's position.

Unless the passenger's air bag has been turned off,neverput a rear-facing child restraint in this vehicle.
Here's why:
{CAUTION:
A child in a rear-facing child restraint can be
seriously injured or killed if the passenger's air
bag in¯ates. This is because the back of the
rear-facing child restraint would be very close
to the in¯ating air bag. Do not use a
rear-facing child restraint in this vehicle unless
the passenger's air bag has been turned off.
If a forward-facing child restraint is suitable for
your child, always move the passenger seat as
far back as it will go.
{CAUTION:
If the air bag readiness light ever comes on
when you have turned off the air bag, it means
that something may be wrong with the air bag
system. The passenger's air bag could in¯ate
even though the switch is off. If this ever
happens, don't let anyone whom the national
government has identi®ed as a member of a
passenger air bag risk group sit in the
passenger's position (for example, don't
secure a rear-facing child restraint in your
vehicle) until you have your vehicle serviced.

You'll be using the lap-shoulder belt. SeeTop Strap on
page 1-30if the child restraint has one. Be sure to
follow the instructions that came with the child restraint.
Secure the child in the child restraint when and as
the instructions say.
1. Your vehicle has a passenger's air bag. If you are
using a rear-facing child restraint in this seat, make
sure the air bag is turned off. See
Air Bag Off
Switch on page 1-44. If your child restraint is
forward-facing, always move the seat as far back
as it will go before securing it in this seat. See
Manual Seats on page 1-2orPower Seats
on page 1-2.
2. Put the restraint on the seat.
3. Pick up the latch plate, and run the lap and shoulder
portions of the vehicle's safety belt through or
around the restraint. The child restraint instructions
will show you how.
4. Buckle the belt. Make sure the release button is
positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the
safety belt quickly if you ever had to.

5. Pull the rest of the lap belt all the way out of the
retractor to set the lock.6. To tighten the belt, feed the lap belt back into the
retractor while you push down on the child restraint.
You may ®nd it helpful to use your knee to push
down on the child restraint as you tighten the belt.
7. Push and pull the child restraint in different
directions to be sure it is secure.

{CAUTION:
Anyone who is up against, or very close to,
any air bag when it in¯ates can be seriously
injured or killed. Air bags plus lap-shoulder
belts offer the best protection for adults, but
not for young children and infants. Neither the
vehicle's safety belt system nor its air bag
system is designed for them. Young children
and infants need the protection that a child
restraint system can provide. Always secure
children properly in your vehicle. To read how,

There is a air bag
readiness light on the
instrument panel, which
shows the air bag symbol.The system checks the air bag electrical system for
malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical
problem. See
Air Bag Readiness Light on page 3-32for more information.
Where Are the Air Bags?
The driver's air bag is in the middle of the
steering wheel.

If your vehicle is equipped with a convertible top/hardtop
and you have lost battery power, use the manual
release cable to open the trunk lid. To access the cable,
remove the center storage compartment lid located in
the rear of the trunk area. See
Rear Storage Area
on page 2-41for more information.
Pull the cable straight down to release the trunk lid.
If your vehicle is equipped with a convertible top
and trunk release handle and you have lost battery
power, use the trunk release handle to open the trunk.
Emergency Trunk Release Handle
(Convertible Only)
Notice:The emergency trunk release handle is not
designed to be used to tie down the trunk lid or
as an anchor point when securing items in the trunk.
Improper use of the emergency trunk release
handle could damage it.
There is a glow-in-the-dark emergency trunk release
handle located on the rear wall of the trunk below
the latch. This handle will glow following exposure to
light. Pull the release handle down to open the
trunk from the inside.

Theft-Deterrent Systems
Vehicle theft is big business, expecially in some cities.
Although your vehicle has a number of theft-deterrent
features, we know that nothing we put on it can make it
impossible to steal. However, there are ways you
can help.
Theft-Deterrent System
Your vehicle is equipped with a theft-deterrent alarm
system.
With this system, the
SECURITY light will ¯ash
as you open the door
if your ignition is off. This
light reminds you to
arm the theft-deterent
system.
Arming the System
Use one of the two following items listed here to arm
the system:
·Press the lock button on the remote keyless entry
transmitter.
·Open the door. The SECURITY light should ¯ash.
Lock the door with the power door lock switch.
The SECURITY light will stop ¯ashing and stay on.
Close the door. The security light should go off.
Now, if a door or the hatch/trunk lid is opened without
the key or the remote keyless entry transmitter, the
alarm will go off. Your horn will sound for two minutes,
then it will go off to save battery power. And, your
vehicle won't start.
The theft-deterrent system won't arm if you lock the
driver's door with a key, the manual door lock, or if you
use the power door lock after the doors are closed.
If your passenger stays in the vehicle when you leave
with the keys, have the passenger lock the vehicle after
the doors are closed. This way the alarm won't arm,
and your passenger won't set it off.

Testing the Alarm
To test the system, do the following:
1. Make sure the hatch/trunk lid is latched.
2. Lower the window on the driver's door.
3. Manually arm the system.
4. Close the doors and wait 15 seconds.
5. Reach through the open window and manually
unlock the driver's door.
6. Open the door. The alarm should sound.
7. Turn off the alarm.
If the alarm is inoperative, check to see if the horn
works. If not, check the horn fuse. See
Fuses and Circuit
Breakers on page 5-86. If the horn works, but the
alarm doesn't go off, see your dealer.
Disarming the System
Always use your key or the remote keyless entry
transmitter to unlock a door. Unlocking a door any other
way will set off the alarm. If your alarm sounds, listed
below are the ways you can disarm it.
·Unlock the driver's door with your key.
·Put the key in the ignition.
·Press the unlock button on the remote keyless
entry transmitter.
PASS-Keyž
Your vehicle is equipped
with the
PASS-Key
ž(Personalized
Automotive Security
System) theft-deterrent
system. PASS-Key
žis a
passive theft-deterrent
system. It works when you
insert or remove the key
from the ignition.
PASS-Key
žuses a resistor pellet in the ignition key that
matches a decoder in your vehicle.
When the PASS-Key
žsystem senses that someone is
using the wrong key, it shuts down the vehicle's
starter and fuel systems. For about three minutes, the
starter won't work and fuel won't go to the engine.
If someone tries to start your vehicle again or uses
another key during this time, the shutdown period will
start over again. This discourages someone from
randomly trying different keys with different resistor
pellets in an attempt to make a match.

The key must be clean and dry before it's inserted in
the ignition or the engine may not start. If the SECURITY
light comes on, the key may be dirty or wet.
If this happens and the starter won't work, turn the
ignition off. Clean and dry the key, wait three minutes
and try again. If the starter still won't work, wait
three minutes and try the other ignition key. At this time,
you may also want to check the fuses. See
Fuses
and Circuit Breakers on page 5-86. If the starter won't
work with the other key, your vehicle needs service.
If your vehicle does start, the ®rst ignition key may be
faulty. See your dealer or a locksmith who can
service the PASS-Key
ž.If you accidentally use a key that has a damaged or
missing resistor pellet, you will see no SECURITY light.
You don't have to wait three minutes before trying
the proper key.
If the resistor pellet is damaged or missing, the starter
won't work. Use the other ignition key, and see your
dealer or a locksmith who can service the PASS-Key
žto
have a new key made.
If the SECURITY light comes on while driving, have
your vehicle serviced as soon as possible.
If you lose or damage a PASS-Key
žignition key, see
your dealer or a locksmith who can service PASS-Keyž.

Rear Storage Area
There are three rear storage compartments in the ¯oor
of the rear hatch/trunk area.If you have a coupe or convertible model, your vehicle
will be equipped with three storage compartment
lids. If you have a Z06, your vehicle's three storage
compartments will not have lids.
To access a storage compartment, pull up on the
latch to release the lid. Remove the storage
compartment lid.
When replacing a storage compartment lid, make sure
the latch is in the correct location so the latch locks
